If you go to the EVH Gear youtube channel and watch the demo by Chris Cannella on this amp you will see how great this amp cleans up at about 3 minutes into the video. Turned up to 50 watts without the guitar vol rolled back and it just sparkles. Nothing against you guys but that demo really shows how this amp sounds in a much better way. Had I gone by this review I might not have gone down and played one myself. Saw the other review and sounded so much better that I did go play one. Absolutely great sounding amp and I have decided I am going to buy one. Very versatile from clean to as much gain as my Lee Jackson XLS 1000, with the ability to play at bedroom and neighbor friendly volumes without losing the tone.
To tell you the truth, I find the white ivory design elements the most attractive thing about this amp! Ha! Looks very, very cool.
Captain. Thanks for bringing Rob on there and for playing original riffs. It nice not to hear all the EVH signature riffs. Great Work Guys.
Greetings from Nashvegas TN, USA
I agree with you guys 100% I own this amp since last year if you want to use the lead channel use some sort of a Noise Reduction, I use iSP "DECIMATOR II" awesome modern tone amp, Clean Ch with a Strat blows lol use a Fender Super Reverb
best sound yet I always listen through beats by dre studio headphones and usually my laptop is full volume and I feel myself wanting more sound well now I have it about 50% and it blowing my ear drums out. good job guys always switching gear as to not get stale
Love the clarity/presence!!
Orange must have told chapters to be less than normal on this demo....
I had the 5150 III head with a Hayden handmade V30 cab. This setup - even at low volumes - didn't sound nowhere near as trebly and thin as this combo, instead it was so thick that it was really mind blowing. The one thing I couldn't get used to about this amp was it being so direct and piercing that I ended up with a JVM410H after it and loved it much more.
I love this amp, specifically on the head version.
Coming from a Boogie owner, this thing is just GNARLY.
I love the honesty of these guys! Great musicians! Great advice!
The Charvel-aficionado in me was pleased with this video. This amp needs no further introduction, it's just lovely! If money and practicality were no issues than I'd have a wall of these...
Of course, I've listened to that song so many times don't know how I didn't notice. Cheers!
It is a pretty good academic exercise to listen to the tones of guitarist as they age, they lose their hearing and their guitar tones get brighter and harsher as they cant hear those highs anymore and compensate with brighter, harsher amps and guitars.
The clean Chanel deserves better credit than they are giving this amp.
yea, you can get blues, jazz, country and classic rock on the green if you play with the gain, and even more rock and blues on the blue with the gain rolled down. and yes it does metal ...lol
@@rhythmaker64 the clean channel is fucking amazing actually. But the second you hit those dirty channels your balls start tingling with power
Loving the tone in the room presentation. Much more real. Brilliant. I'll be back.
Love the new room, and reviewing format! Can't wait for the next review!
For those of you complaining about the recording quality: to be honest, the amp sounds a bit like that. It's actually the speakers; the G12H30 can ruin practically any amplifier. Through the Greenback equipped 4x12, or a V30 cab, this thing sounds phenomenal. Through a pair of G12H30s, it sounds like clipped fizzy garbage.
HAHA Hey .. EVH 5150III Combo (the one in this vid) has two Celestion G12M 8-ohm speakers, thats(G12M Greenback 25W). The 50 watt head and 212 cab have the G12H30s in it. With new G12M Greenbacks or G12H30s you know you have to break them in to get rid of that fizzy garbage. The 212 cab sounds better with the G12H30s i think you know that ..
To my ears... Let's say that clean tone is "undesirable". But the dirt is a whole different adventure!
YOU KNOW WHO PERIPHERY IS!!! youre a bloody legend. love from Australia
Chappers.
Today, I had an awesome day. I succeeded at something that I had worked for possibly years towards. I thought I had failed. I waited and waited for the result. I succeeded.
Then this video came out.
I've been fighting the black dog recently, but hot damn, with these two things, I'm feeling a Whole Lotta Love (for myself.)
Whilst I don't agree with some of the comments saying that the amp sounds like shit, I can confirm that the way it sounds on my computer (through some mid price computer speakers) is how the amp sounded in the room. Like all valve amps the tone gets better the louder you go, but even at 25% volume (which is about what we were at) it was still probably rehearsal volume (so not quiet!). There really isn't anything "wrong" with the way its been recorded....
I think the sounds in this video are representative of how the amp sounded in the room (I should know - I was there!). Obviously the type of speakers you're listening on will affect it, but in a nut shell, at the volume we had it (ie about 25%) it had a weak/tinny clean sound, a decent crunch tone & a really good high gain metal tone. The louder we turned it up, the better the clean sound became, but we really had to get the speakers moving before we got any bass end out of the clean sound.
the cap and chap have done it again :O
This amp sounds so much better in person!
The Power level should go over 9000
Ya know, I have to agree with Nigel. This from a guy (me) who frankly enjoys Cap'n and Chappers vid's as much as any form of entertainment on earth. I'll never stop enjoying you guys, and never miss one demo of you as a duo especially, but Nigel's right with the harsh, ice picky sound. I'll add the term thin-bitter-ish.
I really like the look and sounds the guitar is giving in this video, thinking about possibly buying one after all the very positive press about Charvel guitars recently.
Don't get me wrong, I love you, Chappers. You're a killer player and seem to be an all around great guy. And again, a KILLER player! But you guys have got to do something about your recording quality. You are always overdriving the mic so bad that it basically makes every amp demo you do sound like crap relative to what they sound like live. I've played first hand, many of the amplifiers you've demo'd here and almost without exception they sound better than your videos portray and I'm not 1/10th the player you are. Please have Alderton give you a better mic, midi interface, mixer or whatever for these demos - PLEASE!! If these demos where all I had to go on I would have passed on playing several really killer amps. The one you are demoing here is another perfect example. Sounds 10x's tighter, more responsive and warmer in person than this muddy, overdriving recording portrays. IMHO Rock on Chappers. I love your playing.
So true...his recordings (not at Anderton's) seem much better sound wise...almost every other review out there sounds so much beter
Ola Englund does a GREAT demo with one of these amps
the peavey ultra was a three channel high gain.they are 250dol used.the ultra channel was pretty brutal.good clean and crunch for classic rock
just got it last week love it
Very good point Danny.
That sounds really bright...
We're in the old room!! It just now has acoustic tiles & no sofas!!
couldnt agree more man
I listened, as always, through headphones and I thought it was a good representation of what this sort of amp sounds like. Remember - in a band situation a warm nice sound won't cut it through the mix !
I have got to get one of these!!
I love the clean channel actually
Damn that puppy is bright. Sounds fucking cool though.
The Faraday cage may be what you're thinking of when looking at the back panel.
Holy crap I love that air guitar.
Other bands using the 5150 III are Whitechapel (live), and Gojira (recorded).
Are you planning to ever do any bass reviews? I think that would be pretty cool.
I'm with a couple of the other guys who said this was too trebly and fizzy. I find this with a lot of the videos. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love your demos and won't stop watching them, I just think that in quite a lot of your vids, the sound is fizzy. Hope my feedback's taken on board.
As long as the elves don't come back.. It can be anywhere they want ;)
oh cool... acoustic tiles for the win!
Good review on this amp. EL Capitain and The Chapster.
Great amplifier, great video
Rob you should use this gear the next time Dorje tour, it sounded fucking awesome !
Love your playing Captain!
Ooh ooh ooh Capn'
Have you had a look at any of the Laboga stuff? I'm just curious, because they have some smaller amps similar to the Boogie Mini Rectifier, and also the big dirty fat Mr Hector, as well as the cool Bluesy amps too like the Alligators...
Just doing of a wonders
I'm listening through a pair of high quality headphones and I too found the tone to be very harsh and brittle in this particular video. I thought it was just me, but after reading the comments I can see I'm not crazy (or we all are, one or the other). I don't mean to complain; I find most of Anderton's videos to sound much better and just wanted to provide useful feedback.
I thought the tone was alright, but the real trick is dual mic and use a SM57 and 421 together ... Seriously killer combo
Everybody, we have found The Captain's RUclips channel! Lets subscribe and show him some love!
I was wondering if you would do a demo video of the EVH 5150 3 stealth head?Love your videos btw keep up the good work!
Capt, could you all do a demo sometime for instruments, effects, or amps featuring country style music setups, instead of the usualy blues and rock n roll template...thanks! Dig the videos...
God, i love that Charvel
My 50 Watt EVH III head stays clean right about a gain setting of 11 o'clock with EMG pickups and breaks up afterwards. You do loose a bit of low end that way, but that's what the eq and resonance knobs are for.
This is one of the best combo amps I have ever played. This video really doesnt capture the quality of the tones this amp produces
I usually go on axis and waaaaay off center for listening purposes (not so much for recording). i find its the closest i get from a player point of view.. that means combo on the floor, and your ears 6' up :)
Ugh celestions. I honestly loved the blue marvels.
You do get a different sound from the power amp, it's small but they are voiced different, also there's a video on Misha's channel of him plugging straight into a 5150 III.
I've tried this amp and the thing that stopped me buying it was the clean channel. Very thin and weak with no bottom end whatsoever. The crunch channel however is very nice and the best I've heard. The the lead channel is just insane, even with the gain on about number three. Great amp if you never use a clean channel but for me, I'll be keeping my Blackstar HT Stage 60 (for now)
You guys should do some more acoustic reviews.
Yep thorbear I see were not the only ones that found it too trebly.
Bring back the old video room. More chilled
Awesome playing Rob!
Just feedback i would of love to have seen what captain was doing with the controls while rob was playing
Even Amon Amarth uses the old school 5150's. If I wanted an affordable giging combo I'd be looking at one of these....
Currently looking at the EVH-III 1x12 and the Engl Screamer 50 equiv. Both similarly voiced and priced. The Engl probably cleans-up better and is also more handsome and robust in design (Germany always makes great stuff). Also contains a Vintage 30 (favorite :) ...but the EVH has a headphone jack (might tip the scales). Very cool feature for apartment dwelling combo owners.
Nice guitar selection. If I didn't already have a hot rodded strat, I'd be running down to purchase the 2H slime green maple neck version. The perfect non signature rock machine (imho).
I'm pretty sure Periphery only used these as power amps for their ax FXs in the studio.
I think that the Sennheiser is too bassy. I think you guys got it right with the SM57 and some room mic. The 421 really drives the bass in my speakers too hard and makes it sound muddy.
morning coffee with chappers and lee a goodthing :)
Chappers. I was in Andertons the other day with my friend and I played your sig Chapman guitar through the head version of this (Can't remember if it was the 50w or the 100w) and it sounds savage! Made me come close to adding it to my checkout with my new Line6 shortboard MKII haha.
So JB and STK-S6 are too aggressive or and loud. So warm and open pickups work best with this amp.
CLEAN
Always preferred the sound of an 421 over a sm57. Like the new room! But mis the couches :)
I really fancy having a play with one of these!
Surprised you guys didn't mention Gojira in the video. They've used EHV heads/cabs for ages now and have produced some of the smoothest modern high gain tones I've ever heard. (As you'd expect their live tone is also phenomenal)
Viewers need to remember, the EQ controls aren't in our hands on these vids, and different tones sound good to different people. Any hard rock/modern metal tone is easily doable for this amp, and with basic tweaking there's no graininess or fizz to be found whatsoever.
I'm affraid you didn't put the mike on the right spot. It sounds a bit to trebly to me. This amp deserves a better review.
***** You're absolutely right! I'm very sorry to bother you with my opinion! It wil never happen again! The only reason you use such strong words is because you are sitting there behind your "save" computerscreen. In real live you would'nt use this kind of language because your ass would be kicked lot of times ;). Come on stupid, lighten up, it's just my 2 cents!
*****
not helping buddy
high gain stills sound amazing despite this
Jackson blo Yep, that's right, but they made a review with the head version and that sounded much better, clean and high gain. Look it up on there channel and have a listen.
+Troy Greyham quit fucking crying
Get an ISP Decimator II or the Decimator G-String II for the noise gate
Im so glad I bought the head & cab set and not this! The cleans are much better and its a lot easier to carry than this :)
Please, could you do a video demoing the eletromatic gretschs? Thankya
It's probably the mic too close to cone and too close to the speaker. If you back it up and move it to the outside, it'd be a lot less saturated. Plus G12t75s are harsh speakers, if you put V30s it'd clear it up more too.
What is the sound difference between this combo and the 50W head with the 2x12 cabinets? what about a short comparison video when you have both available in the store?
That is a tight sounding amp. Rob was right on when he said it has a modern gain tone. The San Dimas is so badass. Great choice. Although I love all the ML series guitars, I am glad you guys don't just use those all the time in an attempt to sell them by cramming them down our collective throat.
the captain looks at rob thinking 'please dont play that cheesy shite'
awesome Amps, great value
Oh damn, 2 of these amps will equal my weight.
You need to eat
2 of those would weigh more then me XD
And it weights as much as some ppl in poor countries...
thanks for a great video. i would probably drop the gain a bit even for a modern hi gain tone. just cleans it up a bit. anyway, thanks. great job.
This amp is great, these guys annoy me in this video because the same amp just 50 watt head version they act like its amazing but this they act like it pretty much sucks, so contradictory, not enough notional margin in the combo? can't do AC/DC on this amp? really? Did you not play with it before this video? I can do T. rex to ACDC to lamb of God on this amp. Owning this amp in the first month was amazing how there is almost no tone it can't do. Satchel steel panther maybe kinda comical but watch his live solo collage he plays tunes from GNR to Judas Priest and it sounds better than ever and he uses the 5150 iii
I personally just found it was trebly for this recording. Majority of the time its okay :) In fact I'd prefer it over the "home" vids cause well ... Andertons recording has less ... background boom :P
Sometimes when an amp sounds harsh in a video it actually sounds great in real and fits great in the mix. Good sounding during demo amp might sound not as good when you hear it live.
Sounds awesome, loads of tubes and good design, not my style but I like it anyway
pretty standard. lower gain sounds are more power section reliant, where modern high gain stuff is much more preamp reliant. The thing you guys said about the lower gain pickups is on the money. If you haven't seen the Seymour Duncan pickup series by premier guitar you should look it up. Everything pickups makes more sense after watching it
I love it too ! New video day is a good day !:P
The clean channels were OK, a little brittle. But the high gain stuff was awesome!,just what you want in an amp like this
Hey captain you guys should review the peavey 6505 plus 112 combo. I think thatd would be one of the best metal combos to gig and its pretty cheap to
6:10 Dat Sound!
