Mark Eaton (16pts/13rebs/10blks) vs. Bulls (1986)

  • What a game by Mark Eaton! The two-time defensive player of the year protects the rim numerous times in a Utah Jazz victory after not even being expected to play due to a hamstring injury. Eaton still gave it a go after a visit to a chiropractor earlier that day in Chicago and absolutely surprised Hot Rod Hundley with his readiness to contribute.
The several blocks notwithstanding, Mark Eaton deterred a whole of Bulls buckets and most notably stopped Michael Jordan in his tracks more than a couple of times. All of the fine defensive play throughout the game culminated with a clutch block and steal during the last minute which helped Utah pull off the road win.
The basketball-reference boxscore credits Eaton with 9 block shots but for completely selfish reasons I chose to agree with the Utah Jazz broadcast crew which claimed that Eaton rejected 10 shots and recorded a triple double. And, to be fair, I do think there are 10 plays on which credit is due for a blocked shot (the MJ air-ball at 1:50 is probably the one which could be counted and could not be as well). December 20, 1986.

Yeah been a jazz fan my entire life and had the privilege of going to a few stockton/malone games when I was little kid lol I saw them probably 4 or 5 times at the delta center but I was only like 6-8 years old in the seasons they went to the finals. I think I went to 2 game in the 97-98 season then a few more a after that. It was good times. I remember watching that game where stockton hit the shot over charles barkley that sent the jazz to their first finals it was so exciting.... always a lot of "what ifs" but they just could never finish the job... but they were still elite and played extraordinarily well

Really, he would've just needed a youth career in basketball instead of water polo. He started in his 20s in jr. college ball, and that was ez for him. Then he got to UCLA at like 23 and was like 'oh, *this* is what it's like playing against good players.' Then fucking Wilt Chamberlain just told him to not sweat the fact that he sucked, he's 7'4" and built like a truck driver, he doesn't need the athleticism, skill, or experience his teammates had, just sit under the basket and Lord have mercy on anyone that tries to challenge you. So that's what he did, he was too old to be taught great offense, but he's the only person I've seen that looked like a giant on an NBA court.

He has the career blocked shots per game record, the most 10 block games, the most blocks in a season. He was not mobile but he was very cagy and could get blocks without picking up fouls. Hakeem is the most spectacular blocker (again after WIlt) but Eaton was the best in the modern era and doesn't get credit for it.

Because Mark was slow due to his size he usually roamed around the 3 point line so that he could get back on defense in time. One of the problems with the early John & Karl teams were that Eaton was often completely a non-factor on the offensive end and the other center could sag back and help guard other players. Karl Malone was constantly double teamed. It really was more of a 4 on 5 situation most times on offense.

Mark was a great defender but what never shows up in stats are the shot disruptions, teams had to alter their offense around his ability to keep players from driving to the basket, creating deflections or fear he was going to block your shot.

The Jordan Bulls should be scared of ANY team with a dominant shot-blocker. The 1988 Jazz (almost beat the champ Lakers), the 1986 Rockets (ran into the great 1986 Celtics), never won championships, but they could own any Jordan team, because they had dominant shot blockers, to say nothing of many other championship teams that had them.

@@NameCallingIsWeak you do make great point. The Early Jordan Bulls were a driving to the lane type of team..Pistons destroyed them like that too. .He later adjusted when he started scoring more points with the turn around fade away jumper. He adjusted. That's why...6 Championships
