that's true, but a lot of the defensive schemes you can use today, weren't legal back then. So it was a lot easier to throw the ball in to a guy on the low post, and have him face single coverage.
Eddie Simba there was also no defensive 3 seconds back then look how congested the lanes were. But these kids love talking bout the illegal defense rule and zone defenses that are played today as if masked versions of that were not played back then too.
One of the best scorers ever. He lost a full season with a bad knee injury in 85-86 I believe, and was out a season before the 93 season until his knees couldn't hold up. Even with the injury and missed time he's top 20 scoring all time.
I use to love Sunday afternoon’s watching the NBA in the early and mid 80s. Players were men, and the teams were built around the big man. NBA is straight garbage nowadays. Havnt watched a game since Magic and Bird retired.
@@bryanbaker5942 So true. I hate to sound nostalgic but you are right. The NBA during the 1980s was truly special - whether Bernard King and Patrick Ewing/X Man/Oakley/Starks or their rivals on the Pacers, Celtics, Nets, and Lakers. Such a great NBA era.
Wow....bernard king and michael ray richardson on the same floor....what history! I loved watching both of these all time greats while growing up. 'Sugar' scored 36 in this epic battle. No 3 pointers....just back to the basket, work creation from king! I love watching him and kevin durant in the small forward category.
It's curious. Such a small thing that no one notices but it makes all the difference. No one realizes how difficult that turn around jump shot is and unlike most people that have a turn around jumper the range of motion on Bernard's jumper is so minimal. The only guy that I know of that had the same turn around was Elvin Hayes. One pivot in which he doesn't need a great deal of space and he was never more than fifteen feet away from the basket which means almost none of the times King got the ball were clear outs. In another words, unlike Carmelo, King didn't catch the ball, clear out the entire strong side and held the ball long enough for his teammates to clear insuring a shot late in the shot clock, the defense having enough time to send a double team and putting the ball on the floor which means... no assist. The touch it takes to shot that shot is unreal. By my count, the Knicks as a team got ten assists on ten of his field goals by King but it's not like he was catching and shooting open uncontested jumpers like a Reggie Miller, Glen Rice or Rip Hamilton... all of them were post ups and all of them were defended. CAN I GET A WITNESS!?!? I usually don't look for co-signers when I post but for the sake of fundamental and efficient basketball, someone tell me they see and appreciate that!
damm he was efficient with the dribble. just like most superstars in his day, like Gervin, even MJ and Hakeem always made a move on the catch, unlike players today who hog the ball for like 10 seconds trying to "read" his matchup. Kobe, AI, Melo have low FG% because of that
alot of kids today dont realize how good these current coaches/gm were when they played. guys like ainge, bird, mchale, kerr, hornacek, baylor, jerry west, doc rivers, jason kidd, fisher and a bunch of others im missing

Lamar. I love your description of this upload. I am a life long BK fan. And yes you do not have to tell me about this game. And I adore you said that. Any Basketball fan Should know about Bernard. And I am Glad You Do!!!!
LØRD MCD , Dr. J and Bernard King at full speed end to end were faster than Jordan and taller than Jordan and harder to stop. When Bernard King was healthy that is.
I was unaware of the Indiana game you were talking about. It took me a couple times watching this game to notice that Albert King did not play. Of course, within a year or so of this game Richardson would be banished from the league and Bernard King would wreck his knee and lose two years of his prime and the chance to play with Patrick Ewing.
And people gettin' hyped up over Lebron's 61-point game against the Bobcats just recently, lol. At least the Nets were actually TRYING to stop King from going off on them in this game. I mean their coach was basically throwing everything but the kitchen sink at him, but it was so futile. King was the most unstoppable offensive force at this time until Jordan finally established himself in the league. Damn tragedy he blew his knee out right near the end of that season because he was playing at a truly elite level for the Knicks. Bianchi should've held onto him after they lucked out with Ewing in the following draft. Even at slightly above half-speed, both him and Ewing together would've been looking at a serious title run or two...
...so ur saying the Bobcats werent trying to stop him?sounds like another way to take credit away from LeBron.when Carmelo dropped 60 on them,I'm guessing a top 10 ranked defense in the league wasn't trying to stop him either right?
***** I saw that game with my own eyes.Their defensive scheme couldn't have been made any more clear: shut down everyone BUT Lebron. Not impressed:::yawn:::
Right. because a guy has to be triple teamed for them to have a sense of urgency to stop him. the only reason Bernard King got all that attention from defenders in this game is because the Knicks were ass and they figured he wouldn't pass the damn ball. why double team Lebron when he thinks pass first?u cant stop a great player
***** knicks had won 8 straight and 9 of 12 heading into this matchup... not a great team, but they were far worse without him: 19-36 (.345) = 84/85 knicks with king 5-22 (.185) = 84/85 knicks without king
puja21 ur making my point, bro.he was the only one who could create his own shot on that team.every team need a guy like that because if they don't have one, they will just be role players.a team of role players can make it to the playoffs, but nothing more.he was their star,my dude.without them, they were mediocre at best
I stood at the edge of the tunnel when the Knicks were coming out of the locker room to the court once. I was about 14, 15 at the time (but I was 6 foot then, fully grown). King held up his hand to just high five people nonchalantly as he shuffled by. My memory - again, I was pretty much the size of a man - is that his fingers were about 4 inches longer than mine.
Good Lord, the defensive rotations in this era were so slow at time. If the Knicks put 3 of their players on the perimeter,he would have had 100 lmao. They wouldn’t be able to pre rotate at that point, but even when they were in the area here, they were extreme ineffective
I was at this game and Bernard was giving them the business. The Nets slowed him down when they put the 7 ft shot blocker George Johnson on him in the 4th quarter.
I just noticed something. Bernard went for sixty in this game. Micheal Ray Richardson went for his career high thirty six. Everyone knew of that. Bernard's little Brother Albert didn't play in this game.
***** Bernard King did have a Hall of Fame type NBA career, but most of it were covered with what ifs when it came to what could've been had Bernard King not missed '85-'86 to a Torn ACL as well as missing the entire '91-'92 to a knee cartilage removal operation. And nobody (not even yourself or myself) remembers Bernard King playing one season for the Utah Jazz in '79-'80 playing in only 19 games, and not playing up to his All-Star super scoring machine skills, only averaging a shade of 9 points. Why didn't Bernard King top the 10+ PPG threshold for Utah and his short 32-game stint with the New Jersey Nets in '92-'93?
Poor Jeff Turner what chance did he have King absolutely torched Bird’s Celtics in the playoffs sometimes doubled and triple teamed Celtics won series but king was all that
I was hoping (sugar) michael ray richardson could've just put up like 35 in this epic battle of 2 guys i enjoyed watching as a youth. King looks more like 6 - 5 then 6 - 7.

I always enjoyed the Bernard vs Bird matchups. I wish he could have avoided injuries to see him play at the level he was capable of. He had a very smooth shot. Similar to Clyde Drexler.
No excess dribbling, moving with out the ball, one move and go not this 2 or 3 dribble moves BS that plagues the NBA today its a shame that the NBA will never be that good or at least not for a long time

Shaquille O'Neal was the last great, no one could stop him inside the paint. Sorry for my lack of english skills.
This is obviously before Bernard King broke his leg during the 1985 season. Bernard King to me was a better version of Dominique Wilkins, someone who was a great all around scorer, but with more of an all around game.
Such a smooth jump shot. And he puts the ball above his head before the release, really hard to block that!
The man had 60 without taking 1 3 pointer. Crazy!!
that's true, but a lot of the defensive schemes you can use today, weren't legal back then. So it was a lot easier to throw the ball in to a guy on the low post, and have him face single coverage.
