- Another video that I absolutely had to re-do since the old one was kind of crappy. Ahh.. what can I say? Fat Lever is just all over the court of the Chicago Stadium. He had found a real good balance between being a gambler who over-plays passing lanes and a legit good defender as he both punishes lackadaisical passing by the Bulls with steals and does an admirable job guarding Jordan. Besides the 6 steals he had, Lever also is a part of being the first to loose balls that were initially stolen by team-mates, deflecting passes that he nearly keeps in play and putting pressure on opponents who in result lose the ball to another Denver Nugget. Fat's jumper from 16 is money and he seemingly was the first to every long rebound (I tried not to overfill the video with these). Lever truly did everything he could to keep up with Jordan and the Bulls and seemingly the most important possession of the game should have ended with him or Alex English forcing overtime but this time around he was "only" capable of grabbing two offensive rebounds in a row, while the Bulls basket was left untouched. Lever was from 1986 to 1990 one of the best players in the league, really consistent in both sides of the court and virtually averaging triple double. His Nuggets were really fun to watch and often quite hard to defeat. Had they have a very good player in the front court they could have gone pretty far. Thanks for posting.

lever is underrated defensively. those nuggets teams played really high pace so they allowed a lot of points but they were actually a top 7 def team 4 out of 5 years in the late 80s. and lever was their main playmaker on D - rebounds, steals etc

Not to take away from Lever because he had an insane game, but it really feels like the Bulls were clumsy as hell with the ball this game. At 6:12 Oakley tries to chuck it to MJ for who knows what reason. I've watched that play about 10 times and I can't figure out why he felt like that was a good idea.
His first quarter highlights I thought were the full game highlights for 3:24 😅

I've counted three times (four of you count one play where he steals the ball underneath the Bulls' basket) where Lever seemingly skies over Schayes to grab the board. Is it just me, or does it look like Schayes really wasn't boxing out at all in this game?
Haha, I can't say that he really was. Then again I have to wonder whether the majority of average bigs don't have this bad habit.
Schayes himself actually states that such manner and tendency of Lever was truly irritating for a teammate big man - as they were evaluated by their rpg stats when the contract talks begin, as well as in the media. But Lever's tenacity was more than Schayes' numbers, so he prevailed with his warrior spirit.
Watching this now is super weird visually. There is no spacing out there, the pace is much slower so congested in the paint. Its still basketball so its still fun to watch. But the game definitely needed to evolve. Plus the skill level is lower. Aside from the stars, (alex English, fat lever, jordan) everyone out there is just good enough to be on the floor. Now the 14th man on an nba roster is just as skilled as most super stars, the difference now is just experience and confidence.
@@handlebucket6285 sure but they did it at a much slower pace. As Players in todays era cognitively have to be alot more reactive. Skill level has advanced so has athleticism significantly. Back in these eras it was maybe 3-5 guys who were supreme athletes on a team and maybe 2 who were all around super skilled in terms on ball handling and shot creation. Nowadays you can't even get on a g league team if you don't have that better yet an nba roster. Its a different game but it has evolved for the better. Players are better 1-15 every man can carry an offense not like back then. That's the difference.
@@intendedexpression6609 The pace in the 80s was high it didn't become slower until the mid 90s. Skill level hasn't advanced this Era just values certain skills over others. Athleticism is better but it's insignificant as we see with many players today. And athleticism is more than just jumping. Name 1 team that has a roster 1-8 that can carry a offense?
@@sideshowbobsaget8876 The consensus among almost all nba pros and analysts both former and current is that the skill in terms of versatility is definitely more evolved, this is very evident from just the eye test as well. Also yes athleticism in all forms relative to basketball is better from roster man 1-15. If we can't agree on that i don't think there can be a back a forth dialog on the current game of basketball.
@@intendedexpression6609 Who are these pros and analysts? And what do you or they define as skills? Is skills offense and defense? I said athleticism is better overall but it's insignificant as we see with many players in today's game. Because outside of players being fancier ball handler and shooting more 3s I don't see how players are more skilled. Many players from the 80s-90s have played through the 00s-10s and were still contributing. Oakley was the 3rd leading scorer on the 01-Raptors that made the ECF and went 7 games with the Sixers who faced Kobe and Shaq Lakers in the Finals. 05 & 07-Spurs are filled with 90s players. These guys were playing against CP3, Dwight, LeBron etc, guys who are still impactful in today's game.
Look at someone like Sellers a 7footer who was a sf who played a finesse game. He would be treated differently and brought up differently in today's game, his value would be different in today's game.

Crazy I never heard of this guy and his funny ass nickname. But he was pretty good only heard of him because Luka just passed him for triple doubles. My Mavs were pretty horrible when I started watching in the early 90’s that’s why I don’t remember him plus I was young and he wasn’t as good when he got here. He should’ve stayed in Denver he had the role there. I didn’t know he was on team I just knew Ro and Harp.
