my supraphnic is from 82. its older than me (im 38 now) and i have been using it since middle school. it can crack or it can thump, whatever i need it to do.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the DW true hoop 3mm vs 2.3mm? I think that's part of why their snares sound more focused or contained - especially next to the Ludwig, which is rather vibrant and open sounding.
I guess the DW Collector's thin aluminum is meant to go against the Acrolite and not the LM402 since the Acrolite is slightly thinner than the LM402. Shockingly, the Acro and DW are the same price point, 549ish. It used to be that the Acro was closer to 350 bucks before people started over-hyping them, so it's hard to say who's at fault here for the price hike. The LM402 is about 50 bucks more than the DW. Crucially, Acrolites are no longer made with 8 lugs, they're all 10 lug. All things considered, with the LM402, you're paying 50 bucks extra for a chromed ludalloy shell that is .1MM thicker than the new Acrolite. They're basically the same otherwise and use the same strainer and both have 10 lugs, only with a brushed aluminum finish on the Acrolite which is the same kind of finish found on the DW.
I'm seeing new Supra's now listed at $700, so the DW is defiantly the less expensive snare. I'm going to mess with different head and snare combinations and hopefully bring it up a notch or two.
There is no comparison. The supraphonic is a far better sounding snare. That being said, if the DW snare was worked on to fine tune it we may have a different story. The DW tuned as is, does not sound good at all. IMO
Lol "DW" hands down thee greatest marketing company in the existence of the human race. I will admit their drums finally started to sound decent around 2018 or so. On those exotic wood finishes from dw they do *look* good, and I am sincerely glad they finally came around and made their own shell. Ludwig has won the "battle" since 1909. Just my unwanted opinion, peace

Mine is a 1964 ..I’ve been playing it for 55 years ! 💕
Supraphonic wins
Not even close, Ludwig for sure!!
I prefer the DW, surprisingly. That lower fundamental came through nicely.
Ludwig ❤
Thank you for the comparison video, it was very informative
Really liked the DW to my surprise.
I hear ya. I don't think you would like it as much in person, but the mic defiantly loves it.

The DW is deeper, with a shorter sustain. The Ludwig is punchy, cuts through and has a great ring to it. Ludwig wins.
Ludwig too snarry.
Supraphonic shell is spun and seamless which way stronger and will hold it roundness and tuning. There is no equal to supraphonic!
Supraphonic
dw is a sanredrum. The Ludwig is alive! It´s got soul! 👍 no sence in reinventing the wheel...
Distortion all over the place.
