  • Oak is an often overlooked option when it comes to drum sets. Let's see if any of these 3 high-end Oak kits change that. For this comparison we're using Clear Emperors on the toms and Clear P3s on the bass drums.

AND DANG!!!!! That Yamaha kick drum THUMPS!!!! Can I just have that bass, the toms from the DW and the Ludwig snare????

    • @kevinb8527

Man I thought exactly the same thing!! The DW rack Tom’s had a ton of resonance and sustain, while the Yamaha and Ludwig’s had a little less. The floor Tom’s all sounded similar and great to me, but the Yamaha kick was insane.

I endorsed Yamaha drums for years and owned the very first Yamaha Live Custom Oak (predecessors to Yamaha Hybrids) and loved mine. Tho this day, it was the best sounding kick I’ve here heard.

Ludwig all the way! I used to have a Keystone X and wish I wouldn’t hadn’t gotten rid of it!😩😩😩
But the Ludwig embodies everything that oak drums should be. Deep and dark with a quick decay. For the most part, the toms sounded the same on all 3 kits. But when it came to the floor tom and bass drum, you could really hear the presence of the oak!

Oak, in my opinion has the most distinctive tone from all the other woods used for drums. I love it sooooooo much.

  • @Lumerdrums

In my ears the toms on dw sounded best. they have that "pre Eq'd" sound as if you put an dip at 300-500 Hz at them, which I like. Plus they were the most resonant of the 3 kits (maybe it's the tuning tho). I really liked the bassdrum of ludwig, just the toms sounded a bit more choked in a way. The yamaha is great too, but not type when it comes to looks. The dw finish is beautiful. I can see why it's that expensive. great video again :)

For me, Yamaha caught my ear the most - then the Ludwig (Loogvig) and then the DW came in third. But, all were pretty much in the same neighborhood overall. Nice sets!! (and, I agree on the 18 Evolution crash - those are hard to beat!!). Thanks, as always, for a great video!!

As someone who plays DW, Remo heads, and Sabian cymbals, I can tell you that you can't go wrong with that combo. All of these kits sound great. I think the Ludwig bass drum sounds the way you guys described because it's a 22x16 as compared to the other two which were 22x18. It had more punch. The shell depth really matters for bass drums and floor toms. If the DW kit had a 22x16 kick, it would be perfect. Great video!

      It's called dark sound
      DW - most darker
      Yamaha - most brighter
      Ludvig - medium
In solo plaing darker sound are alwais better. And for calm music, like jazz. But in metal, dark sound will be eaten by guitars.
      Then
      DW are perfect for jazz
      Yamaha perfect for metal
      Ludvig are more versitile

DW for the win if this were to be a competition, but, Yamaha Kick, ufffff....was kind of expecting more from the Ludwig drums but was quite disappointed, although the Ludwig snare was quite appealing. I'm the proud owner of a DW Collectors Series in Pure Cherry and these drums are off the charts.
Btw DCP, I know not a lot of companies produce Cherry drums but, it would be great if U can do a comparison as well and let the world know about this woods sonic properties.
