@@drumcenternh That Sonor might of sounded even better with a real wood inner ply.. That was soooo good. For my ear I loved them all. But when pushed my preference from first to last is Sonor, Ludwig and Gretsch. To be fair Sonor and Ludwig were pretty close but what tipped me was that EVERY drum in the Sonor kit was spot on and distinct. Especially the kick which was never drowned out by the others. Wow, hard to go wrong with any of these kits! The Ludwigs had a softer attack, the Sonors had that clarity, and the Gretsches were somewhere in the middle, but none of them lacked in the low end! 😮💨 Barret's face said it all though, and I'd have to agree! Thanks for the video guys.
exact , et les 3 caisses claires sont magnifiques avec de belles harmoniques , j ai trouvé l attaque de la grosse caisse sonor , un peu trop sèche et aigue ours cette dimension
Thank you once again dudes, another great presentation! All the kits sound great, however that Sonor though…. Wow! Phenomenal sound and looks…. Next level!! SQ2 for the win.
Holy hell that sonor (pronounced sow-nah in Boston) sounded incredible. 9k is steep for sure but that’s a dream kit 100%. Best snare is that Supra though. Sheesh.
Man was this a fun watch! All 3 kits sounded great and would add plenty of vibe to a band sound. That SQ2 though…I haven’t heard big drums sound that hi-fi and immediate. It’s like a big truck that handles like a hot hatch
Another excellent video from you guys, first of all - all three kits sounds very nice, they all have their own individual personality. For me if I had to choose it would be the Ludwig. You cannot ignore that classic Ludwig tone and the warmth from the mahogany.
Purple, green & red monsters... all fantastic kits, and I love all of them, but I'm sure my neighbours would hate me! That Sonor kick really held its own, not over- powered by the toms. Difficult to choose one, but I'd probably rate Sonor as the best on the day. As for snares, Gretsch just a hairs width over Ludwig. Great playing Barrett, well done with the Bonham triplets on the Ludwig. Another wonderful video from DCP - thanks, guys!
@@ethanm1261 I hope you are not heading off to that drum heaven in the sky any time soon, but when you do, you have chosen a great recepticle to go in. Cheers.
The Sonors by far with Gretsch second. I loved all three snares. The cymbals were outstanding. Would never have considered that brand until now. Always enjoy watching Barrett play. He did a great job. Thanks for another great video.
Hello Adam, I'm Adam, and I have just finished watching your video on large drum kits. I had a great time, the video was informative and entertaining, and Barrett is a great player. I own a kit with sizes similar to the Ludwig with a ported reso head and this video has shown me the light of a wide open no-hole reso bass drum. Thanks much for the video, I hope you have a great day!
*The 26” Base Drum is king 👑!* Barrett got it right 👏🏻. 26” x 14” is classic and does NOT project enough, and the 26” x 16” is to overpowering, so the Sonor SQ2 Heavy split the difference at 26” x 15” 🦄 depth! = 🤘🏻
I could feel the air move when that Sonor bassdrum was played, haha! Like the monitor of my computer was deflating with every kick. And really laughing out loud at all the attempts to correctly pronounce the name Sonor (yes, I know, we're supposed to shut up about it). The sound of the name was good this time, but the emphasis was wrong. In German, both parts of the name have equal emphasis. Soh-Nohhhr. The first part rimes with Homer Simpson's "D'oh!" Try it! :) It literally means "sonorous", a full melodious sound.
I loved all these kits. Like you said, each one is a totally different beast from the other. For my money, I would have to go with the Sonor. I know it's pretty penny, but Sonor know how to make wood sound REAL good. Legitmately made me vocally go "phwaor" when I heard those toms.
That was awesome! Really enjoyed getting to hear all of them. I can't have one favorite. so, I'll take the rack tom from the Gretsch, the floor tom from the Ludwig, and the kick from the Sonor. Lol! that was super fun! can't wait until the day I get to play a 26 for the first time. Lol!
The sonor s BD is absolutely insane! In my ears, if I could mixed up, I ll take the toms of the Broadkaster and the kick and the snare of the Ludwig. Your videos are the so useful and well made, guys, I have to thank you so much for such a good and pertinent job, in the name of all the batterista afficionados looking after the perfect kit ;)
Here's a tip. When looking for a big open bass drum sound. Powerstroke 3 batter and front, double sided tape and a large towel. Not for active damping, just to get rid of harsh overtones. Dampen the batter side from the outside. Squeese something between the pedal tower and the batter head. Just one of the rods.
Gretsch for me nothing new there though they just have the liveliest sound if that makes any sense to anyone. My second faves here are the Sonor and the Lud’s last and I love both in person but the classic maple Ludwig’s are my fave for Ludwig. Gretach USA customs for me are the greatest sounding drums ever made and the other two kits that floored me in person were actually these brands the SQ2’s and the CM’s!
My giddy aunt, how good do ALL these drums sound!? A mix of awesome drums, top mics and an engineer who knows how to mix a kit!! So impressive. Personally, the "SO-NOR" has the edge on the rest.
Furthermore, I would love for the Sonor kit to be available as multi samples. I bought the Yurt Rock Bonhamology sample/loop pack. But the samples are pre mixed and only 3 layers deep. Have you guys thought about making multi velocity, multi channel, round robin samples? I can appreciate the apprehension, I sampled my Tama Starclassic kit for the Pearl Mimic pro and it took me 2 days for raw sampling only. I would happily do it again, just would need that right kit and a decent studio with a good engineer that didn't cost me a small fortune to hire.
1. Sonor. That low thumping bass is unreal and the overall sound of the kit is phenomenal. 2. Ludwig. Still one of my faves I guess because I had two 24's at one time. 3. Gretsch. I'm still learning about Gretsch and I purchased the Ridgeland snare a while back. It's one of my favorite snares that I own. I'll take a 3XL Sonor shirt :P
Love this demo. I'm experimenting with different heads on large drums. What heads are on the Sonor kit? Are those coated Remo Ambassadors? What's on the batter kick side? Is that a Remo Powerstroke 3?
I literally drooled the entire video...dude the marine pearl inlays on the Gretsch just kill! But, if I was in a make a wish type situation I would be all over that Sonor Kit lol.
I have had 3 26” bass drums and 24” too, I currently use a dw Collectors 26x18 and it’s the very best I have ever had. I have tried a 26” Broadcaster too, and they are very special, the Ludwig mahogany wasn’t for me , I put Sonor 1 and Gretsch a close 2, but if I was to order such a kit it would be an SQ2 heavy beech kit

I think I liked the Sonor best, but when you went to the room mic, I could hear Bonham in those ludwigs. Since I don't know how to play doesn't matter much. Not like I could afford them.
Ian Paice did nt fail, using 26" base drums. The diameter makes the depth. Can you tell us if the big Ludwig is lighter in weight then a 22 by 18" Base Drum.
Let's be honest -- all the kits sound fantastic, and any one of em would work great for some straight ahead rock -- There is something special about the Sonor kit -- the kick has all the lowend of the Ludwig but projects the mid and topend (click) better. I really love that raw brass Supraphonic snare -- fuq man. Barrett just knows how to hit man -- makes anything sound good -- great groove too. I get major JP Gaster vibes.

I would choose the Ludwig, but I didn't find these drum kits to sound any better than the medium and small ones. The medium and small ones sound very good in the overall sound, they have excellent articulation, this is important at medium and high speed playing. Large drums are suitable for slow play where you need good fill, and are not very convenient for small groups and active travel, so this is a very specific narrow profile setup
SQ2 sounds phenomenal! As a German I can tell that we pronounce it "Sonor". Hope that clarifies it.
Oh that totally clears it up, thank you!!
"SONOR" is pronounced ZO'-nor in Europe. It's German (and English, as in "sonorous") for "Tone"
