The room mic is great for figuring out this will sound in a small pub with a crappy PA. It's easy to make any drum sound good with a full complement of mics and a powerful PA, but filling a room acoustically is where the real challenge is.

Yamaha stage custom birch in natural finish high gloss. 10, 12 toms and a 14 floor tom. 20" kick drum. I bought them brand new and put remo coated ambassador on the tom tops, and stock heads on bottom. They resonate beautifully. I do want another set with bigger sizes some day. Greetings all from The Great Southern Land of Australia. This is by far the best big drum comparison video I've ever seen. I've watched this video many times and each kit is in the zone but for my ears, the PDP wins it hands down considering it's a fraction of the price of the others. I've owned and played well over 30 kits and consider myself a drum snob but this PDP has really changed my perception of what affordable drums can do and I'm now looking at buying one. You guys in The States are blessed with great drum stores and the Drum Center of Portsmouth is one of the best. Best wishes to you all.

    @gibsondrummer 4 года назад +15

The “original” “big” would be 60 years earlier than Bonzo’s 26” bass drum
Gene Krupa was one of many drummers using 26” bass drums in the late thirties some opting for 28”
He also famously used his giant 20x20 “jungle” tom next to his standard 16x16 floor tom
The George Way drums are nice looking

For my budget, the PDP is awesome!
Wonder how durable the hardware and wood hoops are; I mean, I don't rimshot the tom hoops, so I guess it's not a big concern to me, still, I'd like to know.

I thought for sure you would have the Pearl Studio Session Select Birch/Mahogany with the 24x14 13 16 18 huge drums

I was digging all of them but I'd have to go with the Ludwig. That color was amazing as well. What I would have liked to have seen/ heard would have been the Sonor SQ1 in 24, 13, 16, 18 and maybe a Pro-Lite in that same configuration.

My favorite kit of all time was made for Carmine Appice It included a 15x26 bass drum a 13 and 16. They were made by ddrum in the classic style like the vintage Ludwig or Slingerland with the renforcement hoops. All I can say is playing that bass drum was a religous experience with a bibical sound!

All these kits are fantastic! However, I’m so glad y’all feel the same way about the pdp kit. I also never cared for the brand, but they’ve been making some more worthy moves recently (like this wood hoop kit). I still can’t believe I got the kit for $500...haters will say I’m lying, but I amazingly scored at a store that had it on clearance. A literal steal. Also, I’m so happy that y’all featured the aluminum wood hoop snare!! I just got one last week and yet again I’m impressed with PDP for putting out such a drum with such features at that price range. I bought it to go with this kit. It goes perfect.

I have a 1928 set of slingerland that looks just similar to that except it's a 28 inch bass drum. They all sound pretty good to me

I liked the George Way Aristocrat, then the CC, then the Gretsch. The first kit was nice, I would just change the heads for a warmer attack. PDP kit was very impressive too. I was pleasantly surprised. Thanks for the vid.

I am a Ludwig guy... but wow the George Way sounded killer. That 24 had such a great punch to it

My 14x8 black beauty would love them all. Love the Ludwigs, not my colour though, but those PDPs with a 26” would really work.

I thought every set was killer! I’ve been a Ludwig guy for 48 years. When I first saw the pdp’s in that color with maple hoops I had to have them. I own that kit and I love it. It didn’t break the bank and looked great. First night I played out with it, I actually had people from the audience come up and ask me about it and tell it was the “most beautiful drum set they had ever seen”. I was shocked at the reaction! All the years I’m playing my 72’ Ludwig’s in silver sparkle and 68’s in WMP, nobody had ever mentioned them. Do the pdp’s sound as good as my Ludwig’s? Not really, do they sound good? Yes, different but very good and they’re just a fun set to play. I’ve since added the 26” bass drum and a 14” floor Tom as well. At such a great price point it’s very affordable to add the extras. I love big drums! Great video guys, keep up the good work.

Great, fun video, just not quite enough Barret action! Good job with the cymbals ,picking those dullsounding zildjians so we can hear the drums more than if real, rocking 2002 line was used!

BTW I would love to hear a big Bonham size Noble and Cooley but that's way out of my price range.
Tama SLP also with Bubbinga but don't think they make em now.

I had a Mapex Saturn Subsonic with a 24" bass drum. Quite a rare kit and sounded like you were trying to summon Thor himself. What made it more interesting is that it was converted to a nesting kit.
