      @@GuylainPrince He was right indeed. Lyrics in Epica are about 50% of the songs by Mark Jansen and 50% by Simone Simons. They assumingly have both their own way to write lyrics when it comes to the use of words. Anyway I'm looking forward to the analysis later on this week.

    Simone simons was born in 1985. She joined Epica somewhere between late 2002 - early 2003. She was actually only 17 years old (!!!) when she became lead singer of Epica. And she was 18 (not 19) years old when this album came out (2003). How about that for young! And she is not the only one who started so very young. Floor Jansen became lead singer of After Forever when she was just 16 years old!!! So these two Dutch queens were already fronting their bands at the incredibly young ages of 16 and 17!!!

    Thank you Guylain for sharing your journey with us.
    I discovered Symphonic Metal and Epica few years ago. Since then, I explored Epica’s catalog and totally got hooked. By now I can say their work is incredible. I listened to many metal bands since I was a teenager (now 40) but never ever saw a band with 50 great songs including more than 10 top-notch masterpieces like Epica has. The creativity, compositions, musicianship, lyrics and consist quality are in a different level. Saw them live last year in a small venue and it was amazing. Real pros and nice people.
    I strongly recommend to watch the Retrospect 10th anniversary concert (including full orchestra and choir) - one of the most ambitious and epic concerts in Metal history.
    Enjoy your ride!

    Finally somebody to pay attention to the great lyrics of the band. Now i have no idea when you are going to do The phantom agony but if have not recorded it yet then take at the recording from a Dutch TV called "the 2 meter session". They usually invited well known artist and arranged a studio, and then gave the artists the freedom to records their songs in a way that a normal commercial recordstudio would not allow them to. Even though the songs are recorded in a studio for the best result it is totally live and unedited, wich was a trademark of the show. The only exception they ever made to them inviting renowned artists was for Epica. The presenter received their debut album from the record company which is not unusual in the business. When he listend to it he was so impressed that he went over to the producer and said "you have to listen to this". This resulted in 1 hour special (released on dvd/cd) and this was one of the clips. They were all very young is indeed (Simone had just finished her vocal lessons). One of the people singing in the choir was one of her vocal coaches (the blond woman called Amanda Somerville). If you watch the whole hour you see that she is very proud of her pupil and gives her some encouraging signals. The string sections in the studio were all conservatory musicians who had no prior knowledge of the music they were going to play except for the papers in front of them. The dvd has been sold out as you can imagine. I bought my copy second hand for 50 euro's but it worth every penny. Here is the link to the clip and closing section with the string section is just define. ruclips.net/video/UAlRf9qf9d0/видео.html

    The Phantom Agony, Epica's debut album, is very much a continuation of the first two After Forever albums (Prison of Desire and Decipher) and shares very similar instrumental style and tone. Mark Jansen is the main songwriter of the first two AF records as well as the vast majority of Epica's material. He is very much the parallel of what Tuomas Holopainen is to Nightwish.
    Also if you didn't notice: That is an 18 year old Floor Jansen singing on the first AF record, Prison of Desire when you did your The Embrace that Smothers recap.

      You like symphonic metal? You will love them. They are in the same family of music as Nightwish, but they have a distinct personality, both in terms of music and wording. Tell me if you like them as we journey with them. A record of them is expected in the next year. So, it will fun to witness the new opus together.

    • @wmlye1

      @@GuylainPrince for some reason, even though I listen to a lot of symphonic and gothic metal acts, I've never spent the time to attack the Epica catalog. I've listened to a handful of tracks and some of them are in my phone's downloads for listening in the car, but I've not gone back to the beginning. Same thing with After Forever, ironically.
      On a completely tangent note, have you ever heard of VNV Nation? VNV is essentially a solo act from Ronan Harris (an Irishman living in Germany) and the music is in a different genre. Ronan refers to it as Futurepop, and it's a pop/electronic/dance/dark mashup with symphonic elements thrown in. The music itself isn't as complex as Nightwish or Epica (but is always well-recorded, mixed, and engineered) but I think you may find Ronan's lyrics interesting.

    • @wmlye1

      @@GuylainPrince probably the best introduction to VNV nation is the third album, Empires. Burning Empires, an EP with some alternate versions of those songs and some new ones is also well worth the listen. Newer albums are cleaner and more pop, while the first two albums are a bit rawer and industrial, but if you like Empires and Burning Empires you will probably find a lot to enjoy in all of them.

    One just can't deny a song like this... sweet and harsh co-exist everywhere in EPICA's creation - as in life. And that the song gives voice to a strong message (hopefully to be heard by one fan or another...), makes the whole endeavor better. The entire EPICA back catalogue is made up of pretty deep music. The only problem? - Like with any great band, one could go 40 or 50 songs deep and still find gold nuggets. You witnessed that by going over fan suggestions. :))

    Originally released on their debut album in 2003, "Cry for the Moon" is one of the songs also included in Epica's third live album released in 2013 to celebrate their 10th anniversary as a band. Since then they have released only two studio albums, although a new album will be released later this year, so I'm looking forward to see how many of the other Epica songs that you'll react to are also included on the 2013 "Retrospect" live anniversary album. Hopefully at least "Sancta Terra" since you have already reacted to "Stabat Mater Dolorosa", which also featured Floor Jansen on stage with Simone Simons.

    Hi, Brother Guylain. I am interested to say the least. :) It will be fun to watch how you attempt to trace the story of the band's development over time. I am OK as well that you went with the studio version for the first one - although for some songs, live versions transmit more energy and / or emotion. That is especially true for the acoustic "Feint", and for almost any songs included in the "Retrospect" show.
    Do you consider publishing the titles of the 10 songs that got the most "votes", so that we can plan for the ones that excite us, or would you rather keep the surprise? :)) Let's get on this ride!

    • @GuylainPrince
      @GuylainPrince  4 года назад

      Oh, that's is a good idea. Publishing the list of the 11 (because I settled for eleven)? Yup, that will be done very soon. As for the history of the band, I will work more on "the history of their writings/compositions"; how did they evolve in the subjects and in their approach to the subjects? You will see, it is fascinating. Another point : I am aware of the question of the live versions. I promised you one thing. I will work on the version with lyrics (whether studio or live), but I will always watch the version that was recommended to me. All your suggestions have been noted, and will be listened to in proper time. At least, I might react to "what the live version adds to the song". That should be fun!

    • @bigg2988
      @bigg2988 4 года назад

      @@GuylainPrince I quite like the idea regarding "doubling" of select song reactions to cover live versions. It would not consume as much time as the initial thoughtful reaction, but would add to the fun! I understand that starting with a lyric video is ideal from the perspective of paying attention to what it says. (And yes, some visuals CAN be distracting.) Just resign to the fact that you will hardly find more informative and better lyric videos that the latest ones from NIGHTWISH! But hey, those were a kind of "non plus ultra" for the medium. :)

    • @GuylainPrince
      @GuylainPrince  4 года назад +1

      I know that so well! I have never seen anything like those of Nightwish. From what I can see, most of lyrics videos are made by third parties. That is ok as long as due money goes the artists. I just did what I just said to you. I recorded my reaction to "The Phantom Agony", and I kept the recording on while I listened to two live versions. Fascinating!

      I will CERTAINLY do that one day. Somebody brought to my attention the Ayreon project almost three months ago. It sounded fabulous, but there was 7-8 singers in the song. I realized that it was some kind of rock opera, with characters. I stopped immediately. I will come back when I will have time to give my full attention. BTW, - spoiler alert! - I loved Epica's "The Cry For the Moon".

    "And then maybe think a little bit about the meaning of life"
    You are doing it, creating those video`s, as we are made in the images of the Creator, we must be here to create as well, in a lesser degree of course, I would also argue that it give you meaning in life, when you create, think most would agree, unless your full of anger/hate/envy/greed and like to destroy instead, always easier to destroy then create and I guess, is the opposite polarity.
    The Principle of Polarity:
    This Principle embodies the truth that "everything is dual"; "everything has two poles"; "everything has its pair of opposites," all of which were old Hermetic axioms. It explains the old paradoxes, that have perplexed so many, which have been stated as follows: "Thesis and antithesis are identical in nature, but different in degree"
    The Principle of Correspondence
    :
    This Principle embodies the truth that there is always a Correspondence between the laws and phenomena of the various planes of Being and Life. The old Hermetic axiom ran in these words: "As above, so below; as below, so above." And the grasping of this Principle gives one the means of solving many a dark paradox, and hidden secret of Nature. There are planes beyond our knowing, but when we apply the Principle of Correspondence to them we are able to understand much that would otherwise be unknowable to us. This Principle is of universal application and manifestation, on the various planes of the material, mental, and spiritual universe--it is an Universal Law. The ancient Hermetists considered this Principle as one of the most important mental instruments by which man was able to pry aside the obstacles which hid from view the Unknown. Its use even tore aside the Veil of Isis to the extent that a glimpse of the face of the goddess might be caught. Just as a knowledge of the Principles of Geometry enables man to measure distant suns and their movements, while seated in his observatory, so a knowledge of the Principle of Correspondence enables Man to reason intelligently from the Known to the Unknown. Studying the monad, he understands the archangel.
