The "problem" is people who tell you not to eat meat.
Meat has never caused me stomach upset/acid....but fruits and veggies sure do!
I was plant based for 3 decades (🙈I know!) and suffered constant acid reflux. Fast forward… came across Lierre Keith’s ‘The Vegetarian Myth’ have now been carnivore for over 5 years. All digestive issues gone. Best wake up ever!!!
Meat is not acidic, period. Before becoming carnivore on May 15 last year, I regularly had acid reflux and often a yucky feeling in my mouth. It all "miraculously" vanished when I began eating only red meat. I feel great - healthy, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed!
I’m having the opposite reaction. I had gastritis until control that I was able to eat without any problems, since starting canivore, I experienced a flare up so scary that I ran to the emergency room. My stomach is not happy with all the red meat and fat. I’m doing Keto and I feel better.
Yeah but acid reflux isn't attributed to meat being acidic. If anything meat would tend to heal that thanks to zinc and B12. It has more to do with potential osteoporosis which takes time to settle in if ever it does.
Same!
@SachelleCambria you could be eating too much meat or too often. I eat 1X daily and just enough beef only until I'm comfortably full. Not stuffed. I fast 16-20 hours prior to my 1X beef meal.
@@monicahoff6650 I only eat it once a day and only eat twice a day. Prior to carnivore, I avoided red because of fear that it was bad for me. My stomach is just not used to it.
Been here since October 2023. I have so many patient stories from you and others. I am a provider myself. Educating my family.
That's fantastic! Very glad to have you here helping to educate your patients and family!

Thank you Dr Chaffe for eye opening benefits of carnivore. My mother, brother and myself have started this in January. It has significantly improved my mother's health they are lowering her metformim prednisone her inflammation fibromyalga has gone down. She is 69 and tells me she feels like she's in her 40s so excited that she is feeling this way. If I can only get my pops jump on but the bread tortilla addiction is strong. I understand that 100%, I still need to ween off coffee and heavy cream Stevia but for the everything else is meat and butter, so delicious all my aches in joints do not appear anymore. I was hook an this Jan 18 a month before turning 50. I was trying to find things I can do to avoid cancer and ran into your video with Dr Sefried and your video on the corruption. Of the food industry.. people are shock when I tell them this. It's hard to sway minds but I continue to push and send your videos. THANK YOU!!
I still drink my black coffee. Nobody’s perfect and if we have cut basically everything else… seed oils, carbs/sugars, processed chemical foods, externally applied chemical filled lotions and such… we are light years ahead of the SAD diet from before😊
That's so good to hear about you and your mother's improved health! And yes it is shocking to hear how badly the system is corrupted, and how much we've been fooled throughout the past century, but it's just a matter of record at this point so I think the truth will continue to get out there, it will just take a bit of time. Thank you very much for taking part in this and trying to help people get better!
@anthonychaffeemd 100% this is a serious matter and it sickens me. I will eventually get to a representative on both sides of the ailse now how they take that info will who knows, but it will take a brave representative or senator to push and make an effort. It's not right they turn an eye knowing big companies are getting us sick so big Pharm can come up with a drug to keep us alive in misery. Thank You Again!

Bart Kay reacted to that meat=acidity video... Basically, Professor Bart Kay said, "It was a dumb concept and that the other guy didn't really know what he was talking about," (im paraphrasing.
For leena who asked the question about fasting: I also put on 18kg of fat on carnivore. It might be related to your hormones...thiroid... menopause fat. Check these things
Meat and Sprinting heals
I used to use a tablespoon of peanut butter to get to sleep. Now I use butter. Real easy on the blood sugar.
Also when I'm starving and making a meat or egg I'll take a chomp out of a stick of butter cause it softens the spike of blood sugar.
Meat and eggs won't spike your blood sugar....the Fat and protein causes a gradual ,moderate increase that isn't a rapid spike .It will also gradually normalise afterwards ,without a crash .
Carnivore for 6 weeks. Had severe acid reflux for years. It’s gone now. I never have the 2:30pm crash like I use to when I ate carbs. I have energy all day. I’m awake & alert all day. Down 20lbs & never hungry. No sugar cravings. Carnivore is an absolute game changer!!!
Big thanks Anthony, these Q&A sessions are a great spontaneous forum that usually addresses my immediate questions. As a 64yo Male with autoimmunity issues in remission, the lion diet (since Feb) has been instrumental in getting back to high intensity training. 😂 I definitely have high T levels like others have reported. Outstanding and commendable service!
Sense starting the meat diet, no more acid reflux, arthritis, osteoporosis or eye floaters. My skin is tightening up an age spots are disappearing.
I have had severe leaky gut, SIBO, gluten intolerance, allergies & have needed to deacidify my guts with acid blockers for nearly 40 years.
Since eating carnivore I have no more acid reflux or heartburn unless I over consume salt.
I do take a little sodium bicarbonate before sleeping & it definitely helps alot with my life long symptoms of excessive acidity causing constipation, bloating, gut & joint pains.
Hopefully my leaky guts will fully heal from the nearly 70 years of gut damage from the SAD diet.
Well wishes.
That’s awesome !
I have SIBO too. I am trying healing it with ruminant meat broth, OMAD, lion diet and no salt. Any further advice?
I had reflux it took a few weeks on carnivore before it disappeared
@@vanessaeriksson1212
In my opinion the Lion diet is great & I also suggest you up the animal fat intake by eating the highest fat beef or steak.
The microbes in the intestines can't thrive in the fat & will attach to the fat & be eliminated thru the stool.
It takes a while so don't be discouraged.
Well wishes.
@@EarmuffHugger Yes 👍🏻 I agree! I take tallow fat whenever I crave it, and my blood pressure is low. I have boiled water in a mug with a pinch of Himalayan salt as electrolytes.
I also consume beef liver. I made duck stock yesterday, which helped my SIBO and IBS. I love lamb, too. I will make lamb stock this evening. Thank you for the excellent advice!
The more tallow I consume, the more weight I lose.
Thank you as always Dr Chaffee for this response. It's always so great to listen to your information and reasoning. I am on day 81 as of today. Feeling on top of the world !
The information you provide is so helpful.
Simply soo good to hear you Dr. Chaffee
Your blood will be ph regulated by the body. Preferentially for that matter that it will go to the bones if it had to to maintain that. So the best way to prove or disprove that theory would be to look at the bone density and quality of carnivores. My guess they are very sound.
its one of the things the archeologists look at to determine diet of the ancients. there are graves in the Balkan region which have a mix of the Proto-Europeans, who were primarily carnivore, and the original European inhabitants that were primarily plant based. they can tell who is who because the P-E were typically larger and had better bone density. (their graves were similar to those on the Russian steppe).
I see even women in their 60s and 70s reversing osteoporosis on a carnivore diet, within a year typically.
@@anthonychaffeemdThis is my hope, among many other benefits! 🙂
The unhealthy “acidity” derives from industrial processed carbohydrates
But yes, meat are acidic to, BUT this acidity helps your stomach process the meat, so you’ll absorb all the nutrients
Way to many people have very low stomach acid, which leads to a whole lot of other conditions in your whole body, incl. leaky gut syndrome, which again leads to autoimmune health issues.
deboraazharra4934, pH of beef is approx 5.65. Fruits and veggies are way more acidic, apples being 3.65. I don't know of a food that humans eat off hand that are either neutral (7.0) or alkaline. I agree, humans need to eat slightly acidic foods to help in the digestive process in the stomach. Ingesting sodium bi-carb would just mess up the natural pH of our stomach of 1.5 to 3.
Bart Kay did a few response videos to that one of Dr James, they were quite interesting but also quite technical :)
Meat is perfect for health. ❤🥩❤
Recently bought a 36cm wrought iron pan to help with the diet from Solidteknics. I can almost throw out the rest of my kitchen. 3 full rump steaks at a time! No I have no affiliation with the company. Just makes life so much easier.
Excellent talk Anthony!👍! The pH of 2 in our stomach is THAT low for a reason, & to try to dilute it is wrong!
In terms of acid indigestion and reflux, my tummy is always fine after eating red meat and fat. I used to live on Tums, but it was wheat and grains and some dairy that gave me acid indigestion. Just my personal experience.
Great info doc....Carnivore changed my life ...i am 65 feeling 25 ...game changing effect is a carnivore diet
It's not meat per se that's acidic it's presumably the downstream metabolites.
Bart Kay responded thoroughly to that Dr. DiNicolantonio video.
Bart Kay already answered this. He put Dr Dinicolantonio in his place.
thank you
It’s low stomach ph that causes the valve on the top of the stomach to stay open, causing gastritis/ heart burn.
The normal/optimal stomach pH for humans is 1.5 to 3. What level of pH, to your understanding, is low enough to cause the valve on the top of the stomach to stay open?
@@gracejohnson52 low acidity. Lack of acidity etc. my mistake for your misinterpretation
It is my understanding that coffee or caffeinated. Beverages relaxes the sphincter.
Not only below, so to speak, but above. Causing stomach contents To reflux.
It's neither low or high stomach acid that's the cause of heart burn. I had heartburn even when I ate betaine hcl. The cause of GERD is carbohydrates fermenting in intestines. Fermentaion produces gas. It can either go up or down. If it goes up it creates a bubble from the acid stomach and that gas bubble pushes up to the esophagus. There are 2 tactics people use to avoid that:
1) they decrease stomach acid by taking antacids => there are no more bubbles of acid, just gas but the problem is still there and absorption of nutrients is impeded
2) they increase stomach acid by taking betaine hcl => increase of stomach acid causes esophageal sphinster to close because it "thinks" it's meal time. The result of this is that the rising pressure from the intestines has to go somewhere and hopefully it will result in a fart
Another name for bacterial fermentation is SIBO.
The real solution is stopping carbohydrates, fermentation stops within a couple of weeks.
@@Michal_Sobczyk thank you!!!!!
The whole alkaline movement is going through a resurgence right now and there are a lot of Dr sebi people out there too, promoting it.
There’s always a fresh supply of believers.
Only time I gain any weight on carnivore is if I’m eating lots of cheese or heavy cream and spiking my blood sugar all day without proper eating window.
How does your blood sugar spike on cream & cheese ? It shouldn’t .. but that said yeah it’s easy to over eat those things
Same. The week I added raw milk cheddar cheese to my burgers and used chalffles made with the same cheese I saw my weight start to creep up. Not doing that again 😂
Meat has a lower ph than most plants, but that is indeed a GOOD thing. We need the acidity in our stomach to properly digest protein. We as a species have in fact one of the lowest ph levels in our stomach acid, especially as mammals.
😂😂😂 I love my salt and use my high meat consumption as an antacid. No plants or carbs and all reflux went away. ❤
I agree about blood acidity. It never change. But I though that when we were talking about body acidity it referred to body fluids, like saliva or urine. On a very high process food diet, my urine ph was around 6.7, which is not surprising.
I am not trying to be rude but the urine ph is a silly metric to ever be concerned about. Urine IS, in part, one of the bodies redundant systems that regulates ph. Urine is LEAVING the body, not part of the bodies ph.
The urine tells a lot about what's going on in the body. You get readings of billirubin, urobillinogen, glucose, nitrate, leucocytes etc.
And also ph.
When I was on a plantbased diet I had a good ph of 6.5 to 7.
Since carnivore my ph is 5!!
In the context of PH it is silly.
All you are saying is that your waste ph is 5, not your bodies ph...if that was the case you would be deceased.
14:15 Hey, Doc. Just want to start with saying that you saved my life and my pancreas. Carnivore is healing. However:
Hard dissagree on fasting not having health benefits! I had peripheral neuropathy in my foot after Glucose and insulin infusion after Ketoacidosis.
Fasting for 7 days fixed it! As a neurologist, I immagine you can see the implications of that.
Also, there have been stories of people healing and regenerating myocard. That is understood as imposible!
Anyway. Love you, doc.
I think he's concerned with slowing down your metabolism, which is totally legit, but I agree some people need to heal other things first and fasting can help. I personally do a 2-3 day dry fast once in a while but I'm pretty healthy now, after being on carnivore 4 years.
dry fast?
@@itsgio5573 no water, it speeds up autophagy.
That Dr needs to stop selling his supplements. Meat is made of fat and protein. Fat is the opposite of acidic. Protein is neutral at best but usually basic if anything. How silly can one person be?
Check out steak and butter gal 'marketing system'...! It is all about click bait and NEW viewers, nothing else. Hey, people have to eat, right, and if they do nothing that actually is of value, they have to scam. But then, commercial marketing brought us this info or we'd not know it. We built a broken system on purpose so it can be 'leveraged'. It ain't gonna get fixed, and this is as good as it gets. Has Dr C helped you? Like elections, you get to chose the lesser of evils. To good health! Be well :O)
Protein is made of amino “acid “
@@ango586don't be silly.
Same type of guy to say to supplement sugar cravings with Diet Coke
Bart Kay clearly illustrated why this person was wrong about meat acidity.
In one of your videos pertaining to psoriasis, you touched base on how ketones can help the brain with traumatic brain injury. Could you make a video on that? Very interesting
😂 Addicts cook up their fix with citric acid 💉You can literally bang acid straight in your vein and you are completely fine (well, they're probably mighty high indeed but they're not dead)
True, but keep in mind that 0.5 ml of a slightly acidic liquid (say it's water, heroin and citric acid) injected in 5 liters of blood is not going to have a huge effect on blood pH. I guess that a hard workout tend to decrease blood pH much more.
@@Noegzitwho knows. I'm thinking it's still an entire percent change in a system that only usually deals with minute fluctuations. Just goes to show though, we are so ridiculously robust if we just get out of our own way. It also displays just how bad the *ahem* "food" most people eat to mash themselves up so badly isn't it
Fasting can be very beneficial, for many aspects of a healthy lifestyle. Many of us come from critical periods of health. Kelly Hogan also intermittent fasts. This subject is the one I do disagree with Dr Chaffee.
Regarding Leena's question, I am unable to "just listen to my body" and lose weight. If I just obey my hunger and eat as much just beef as I want I will gain weight, especially if I eat multiple times a day. Perhaps she is similar. I have had to resort to actual fasting (36-47 hour fasts) and not just time-restricted eating (OMAD) to get results that I want. If I can find it in myself, I plan on doing 72 hour fasts twice a month. However from the research I have done, 72 hrs should be the maximum for fasts as longer fasts can actually slow down your metabolism as Dr. Chaffee stated. I don't believe Dr. Chaffee has ever actually been fat, so with all due respect, I believe he lacks experience and perspective in this regard.
You don’t have to be fat to make observations about results from fat people. Such a silly thing to say.
Regarding your weight gain and hunger signaling, I wonder if you are doing your body a disservice by depriving it of nutrients it needs over time. Some allege having eaten large amounts of meat for some months until suddenly their hunger was more moderate.
@@TehKarmalizer At least I was respectful with my criticism. A courtesy you failed to afford me.
@@XaqNautilus what did I say that was disrespectful?
Carbs increase stomach acid production?!? ...Yeah that checks out from my experience!
I always thought this weird concept of food acidity or alkalinity was the weirdest diet craze ever thought up. All food is acidic. Vegetables and fruit have higher acidity than most animal products.
Lemons are acidic but aren’t acid-producing in the body-by the time they hit the kidneys, they’ll contribute to lowering the pH of your urine. This is why baking soda and lemon juice are often used in homeopathic/natural medicine to help kill pathogenic levels of bacteria (UTI) in the kidneys. Works in about 30-45 minutes to eliminate the pain from a UTI.
Dr. Chaffee is just wrong on this, sorry. Meat isn’t bad, but it’s just unquestionable that some foods are acid producing in the body, and some work to lower acid. Not in the blood, bc your body controls that pH very tightly.
You can develop Alkalosis or Acidosis depending on your diet if you body cannot balance properly.
He is technically accurate, but it's only applicable if we ONLY eat protein. Thankfully, we eat meat, which is much much more than just protein.
Do you have a link to the document that explains this?
Say what? Meat is fat, protein and water.
Bart Kay put out a take-no-prisoners response to DiNic’s video. So far he has a two part video up on pH regulation.
@nancychandler768 No, meat is not just those things. It also comes with all that supplies those things, such as vitamins, minerals, and more.
@@coffeemachtspass yes, I've watched it.
Hey @anthonychaffee, just wondering why you’ve dropped salt?
Carb burning produces at least 66% more ROS and acidity than burning fat because it is inherently more dirty burning as a fuel. And that's the best case where it cleans up properly after itself, which it often does not. This is part of the reason a high carb diet is so catabolic. Bicarbonate supplementation can take some pressure off your kidneys but it is not absolutely necessary on any diet, and much less necessary on a diet low in carbs!
What do you mean by saying hc diet is catabolic?..
@@markaguilera493 That's the reason an acidic diet is bad, and burning carbohydrates acidify the body greatly. Especially bad for the kidney. One of the main reasons vegans are pencilnecks.
Do you still get the vitamins from well done meat?
I did read in medical books that some foods are acid forming and some are alkaline forming. I do know some people bodies adapt to food sources overtime depending on where they live. Some People live long healthy lives over 100 years eating rice and veggies on Okinawa, Japan or eating pasta and veggies in Sardinia, Italy. Their bodies adapted to their diet overtime. My body is not adapted to eating rice or pasta and they may not be adapted to eating my diet.
If you look at the actual diets of people in Okinawa and Sardinia, is far more meat-based than they portrayed in the Blue Zones propaganda face. Also, a lot of those people were not actually as old as they said they were, as they had lied about their age to qualify for pensions earlier or to continue receiving the pensions of dead relatives who had died years earlier but weren't reported to the government. So pension fraud was a major contributor, but also regular fraud where they lied about how much meat they ate
Okinawans eat way less rice than the rest of Japan and they eat a lot of pork and sea food not just rice and veggies... The so called claim that they eat mostly plant based came from a 'study' done on them not that long after world war two when they were still essentially starving on sweet potatoes because their normal food had been decimated...
Same with Sardinia the majority of the centarians there were shepherds who lived off of mostly lamb, milk, cheese, and pork but some propaganda piece claimed they ate mostly grains and beans and veggies and became popular enough that now people think it's true

Those that discuss meat being acidic for the body refer to the interstitial fluid between the cells and the cells themselves as being effected. Not the blood. Dr.Robert Young is one who promotes this and he Claims to not eating meat for 40 years and is in his 70's and looks great. If carnivore diet works for you do it. I know I am checking it out, and have been recommending it to my patients.
Do you have a link to something explaining this information? My wife sent me a video of a Dr. saying meat was acidic, at this point its he said he said, It would help me if i had a document to show her.
Google acidity of meat and then google acidity of fruits and vegetables. You'll see that meat is slightly acidic, pH less than 7.0. Fruits and vegetables are much mote acidic. I know of no human food off hand that is either neutral (pH 7.0) or alkaline (pH greater than 7.0)

No, the main benefit of fasting is not that you do not consume poison like oxalates.
And no, fasting does not cause any jojo effect; eating a caloric deficit does, fasting per se does not. In cases of severe overweight, people have fasted 300+ days without any signs of a reduced metabolism whatsoever. As long as you keep your electrolytes in check and have sufficient body fat, you can theoretically water fast indefinitely.
Dry fasting is even more potent, however dry fasting should for safety reasons not be done in high heat or for periods longer than 5-7 days (3 days max for beginners).
Firstly, eating carnivore is a form of ketogenic diet; it puts your metabolism into ketosis, so burning fat.
Fasting on the other hand is a repair state. The body shuts down energy for digestion and increases autophagy & growth hormone output significantly, even compared to ketosis. 1-2 times per year a 5-7 day fast is recommended, as the deep autophagy reduces chances for alzheimer, parkinsons & cancer. It's good for the immune system as well and the growth hormone makes it easier to put on muscles too.
Secondly, it's neither a new invention nor unnatural. Just as our ancestors lived by hunting, the fasted between hunts when there was no prey available. Even for the mongols, it was normal to go 2-3 days without any food between meals!
It is therefore of no surprise that any religion whatsoever has some way to teach about fasting. For medicinal reasons, once or twice a year fasting 5-7 days is enough.
why dont you use salt??? whattt 😭😭😭
My stomach doesn’t like all the red meat and fat. I had gastritis under control until I started the canivore diet. Even though I take HCA before every meal, it doesn’t help. I’m doing Keto and feel much better. It sucks because I started canivore due to food allergies.
Apple Cider vinegar
Do what's best for you.
@@paulhailey2537 Apple cider vinegar nearly destroyed my life. I don’t care what anyone says, it’s not a good idea for gastritis.
Μaybe try moderate fats higher protein. Many people dont do well on high fat
@@ChrisEmm87 I will. Thanks.
I've been carnivore for about 1 1/2 years, and I can say I don't like the taste of liver either so I chop mine up and add it to my hamburger and I can barely taste it. I have maintained my weight, and my eyesight has gotten better. Don't see myself stopping carnivore.
If it doesn't taste good don't eat it trust your body to know what it needs. When I first went carnivore 4 years ago I was eating it a lot and it tasted great. now it tastes terrible to me, so I know my body doesn't want/need it anymore.
Can a carnivore diet help LUPUS ….???
, As a nurse in the US having taken anatomy and physiology I and II,
chemistry. Microbiology, Nutrition etc...
I was always led to believe and was taught that protein is made up of acids as well, as well as fat being made up of acids, yet you say there is no acid in meat.
Are you referring to the ph? Different thing.
Fasting creates autophagy which is very healing.
MARIJUANA can mess up your hunger signals. I know. ✌️ It not only can make you overeat, you can get to a point where you can't finish a meal if you're not stoned.
As a daily toker, I was eating a lot of small meals all throughout the day. I didn't fix this until I spent a week on a T break (slang for quitting THC). When I smoked another joint one night, the next morning I couldn't finish my normal breakfast. Daggum plants!! 😖
Yep
One does what one MAKES themselves do. Some are weak.

You don't eat salt? Don't you salt your meat? You would be the first carnivore diet influencer I've heard of that doesn't eat salt. What do you do for electrolytes?
Maybe he's talking about urine ph? Oxalate dumping?
I agree. With the potential of creating uric acid kidney stone when they say more acid produced to digest meat. I wonder how much truth to that, if so, how to combat it besides increase water consumption with lemon.
Marinating the meat in a bunch of seed oils could potentially make it acidic
NO!
I would advise people who are no longer progressing on the carnivore diet to do research on this subject, acid-base balance. I was a carnivore for more than 6 months, before rather the ketogenic diet. and it’s true that I never heard of that when I was only in the carnivorous sphere. The answer to Dr. Chaffee's very specific question here is correct. Doubts expressed about acidity in the body arise from the fact that particularly animal proteins, metabolized by human cells, leave an acidic residue. proteins are therefore part of the elements which contribute to the increase in acidity, and there are elements on the contrary which contribute to the alkalinity of the human body. the body will always do the job of keeping the right ph, different depending on the part of the body but health comes from the balance between the sum of alkalizing and acidifying elements. those who need it, who have not experienced the miracle of the carnivore diet, look at this track, otherwise don't change anything.
And you're a doctor of?
So what is your recommendation to get more alkaline buffers in?
I just checked the ph of various fruits based on another comment, and it's much lower than meat. E.g. apple is 3.5, and lemon is 2.0 to 3.0. So I don't think this topic is that big of a deal. Just watch out, google sometimes gives the ph a fruit or vege is best farmed in, not the ph of the grown fruit/vege.
Liver tastes nasty!! 👶🏼😂🤢
Yes I've heard that many time on my health journey trying to figure out what is the best diet... And I've heard many times that eating lemon make our body less acid... Never understood how and why... 🙃
2 million years ago? The age of the earth is only 6 to 8000 years old according g to Biblical time line. Oh that's right we're monkeys I forgot
I like cake !
Google essential amino acids.... then fatty acids..."Doc" please be more clear or people regurgitating what you say will sound totally ignorant
Meat is not acidic
