I know its not your primary hustle, but its actually criminal how little viewership there is on your channel. The skills and advice is top notch.
He's so good, it's scary.
great vid. as a new painter videos like this are a huge help. there's a ton of "how" videos, a "why" video like this dealing with color, composition, and motivation behind your color choice are a great change of pace.
also killer logo
I'll second that!
These are the best of these guys running around the mini painting Internet. Simple and bold.
Love the idea of starting with a core color first rather than a “scheme” of colors.
I love your color/art theory videos. It's not always the easiest style of video to find here on RUclips and they're rarely described this well.
Thanks! I'll be sure to make more :)
Not use to seeing something that is traditionally painted grungy, painted so brightly. Well played sir, well played.
Really like the addition of the clan rats. Makes it like a little diorama. Cool scheme thanks for the very condensed colour theory and composition video
What’s funny to me, is that your color theory videos have led me down a rabbit hole of painting in different mediums than just miniatures. Landscapes, studies, faces, forms, the world is a canvas.
Amen!
Using the three points of yellow on the shield and two cloaks helped me see the harmony in the sculpt that most other paint jobs don't highlight
That Grey Seer is spectacular! Such a beautiful model done justice with an excellent scheme
Love how the yellow worked on the Skaven, normally they are so dark!
I Love that yellow - but even more i Love the two extra rats on the Base, giving It that little Story and adding more space for that beautiful contrast!
Great model - great Video!
Love the addition of the other two skaven! Makes me want an army full of multiple skaven per base to really sell the horde vibes.
interesting to see such a bright yellow, despite looking dingy at the same time. very cool.
That Grey Seer is amazing, and congrats to the winner of the paint set!!!
I love how much of the colours on the model all blend and focus around your key colour. I have used focus colours before but never across the whole model to bring in more cohesion and smoother transitions
Love the yellow! It's fun to see the murky rat mans in a more radiant light like this. Great job as always!
Adding the pair of clanrats just frames the model so nicely, even before adding colour. Great shout!
Appreciate your style and the way you adapt it from something full of skulls to a yellow rat. It still reads as distinctly you while at the same time being different.
Knowing how to guide the viewers eye is so important, thanks for sharing your knowledge 😊
Glad it was helpful!
The way you are able to add bright colours and still evoke that grim dark feeling always amazes me. Super inspired to start painting my rats now (I just need to assemble them first 😂)
Listen, this is the clearest simple breakdown of color framing with minis, and I hate that for the YT mini-painting ecosphere but I love that for Sam L.
Skaven are one of those armies that you can really go crazy with in terms of color combinations due to their disorganized nature.
Making a bright color look cold is something I really need to try out one day.
I love painting minis in saturated and bright colors, even if the grimdark aesthetic might be generally seen as more suitable, I just really like it when an army stands out on the tabletop. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I love the almost pastel sea-green on the greyseer, it really helps the yellow pop!
Maybe it's the edible but I found myself giggling. I think there's a playfulness to Sam's approach to content that always makes me happy.
From playing Skaven in Bloodbowl I’ve come to love giving them a yellow army/team colour. I love the contrast of the grey/green robes on the Greyseer with the yellow, it looks amazing
Never heard a miniatures colors scheme described like that. You've got a new fan.
Man, that greyseer looks amazing. This is one of the best schemes for Skaven I've seen. Bravo sir!
Love your crown of paints in the background! It’s always good to hear your thought process when it comes to colour theory. It’s something I don’t often think about and you explain it so well. As always thank you sir.
Always a big fan of the bell imagery in the Skaven faction and the bell in this looks ridiculously real, so shiny 😩
I like the fact that you present theory and not just step by step instructions like many other paint videos do.
Awesome Sam.
Thanks for the video and the chance to get our hands on that set
I love the composition of this piece. The poses of the figures and how you’ve chosen the lighting sell the concept of movement very well. Woe unto those who stand in the way of the Skaven Tide!
I really appreciate the vivid approach to warhammer minis. It looks so good.
Looks great, as always! Gotta love the triangle of yellow drawing your eye to the face of the Grey Seer!
I'm new to painting minis. Given this videos clarity, I need to take a look at your back catalog
Thankyou as always for the words of encouragement Chromatic King 🤜
I recently got into painting after lurking your twitch streams some years back. I love that now I can catch the pearls of wisdom at my convenience here on the ol Y'Toob. Keep up the good work Sam!
This was good timing with me starting my painting journey and looking into color theory more
This skaven piece is so painterly in the lighting.
I love the color theory that you bring to your videos - to me, a fresh take that doesn't exist in as easily a digestable format on yt
Would love to see the whole box set painted this way. What a great scheme!
It's always good to learn the 'why' as well as the 'how'. Keep doing what you do man. It's appreciated
I really like how well that yellow pops against the darker colors and congrats on getting such a nice yellow as well that is a tricky color to get right and this is right :)
This is super helpful. I also love how different your skaven color scheme feels compared to what seems to be a more general desaturated pallette
Always great to hear the artists reasoning for their colour choices in such an in depth way! I hear from alot of people in the hobby that yellow is the most daunting colour for most. Hopefully when this I shared it will inspire them to paint bravely :)
Skaven and yellow work so well together 👌. I painted my Skaven blood bowl team with a yellow scheme as an homage to my friend's old fantasy army. You've done a great job here, this looks radical 🤘
Very beautifully painted, the yellow just kept drawing my eye. I always struggle with making a colour pop without it looking out of place. Just within your yellow itself, the colour variationfrom highlights to shadows are so smooth and seems to all fit together.
Always in awe of your work Sam but the spatial and chromatic composition of this piece makes this my favourite Seer paintjob, period 😍
Love the base, love the seafoam.... Not a colour I would have associated with the yellow in a million years!
Such a unique take on the grey seer, and it works so well.
I know the yellow was something you wanted to go with but man the grey greeny blue really grabs my attention and gives me Frazetta vibes! Great work!
Great reminder of the importance of colour theory and how it can impact our pieces! I’ve had a couple of situations recently where this has come into play!
This was an awsome paintjob and the two "lackeys" on the base are a cool tuch.
These rats blow me away. I don’t even play, but I want to pick them up for dnd. They’re just artistically so compelling.
It's always rad seeing you, on your channel or with Uncle Atom. Your work is top notch and so is your attitude about life.
I love the colour choice! Most of what I’ve been seeing is dark and grungy. They yellow is super refreshing
You breaking down color theory could make a great video, even applied to things other than mini painting. Very much looking forward to seeing more
Hearing you describe the thought processes that go into leading the eye around a piece for maximum effect really demonstrates the artistry of miniature painting which can be missing from so many other speedpaint/slapchop type videos. I understand both have their place but find real satisfaction in seeing someone so talented in their craft.
The yellow pops really nicely, I especially like the black/green shadows! Normally something you want to avoid when painting vibrant yellows but it fits very well with the skaven :)
Love this piece. Wouldn't have chosen these colors and I absolutely love them. The sea foam green together with the yellow just works so nicely.
Hell yes! Sam you hit it dead on the head with this vid. Color Theory is fundamental for us painters. Loving the way you break it down and explain it. keep these freaking coming! (I miss the leather Jacket man..)
I love the more technical videos like this. Tons of videos out there of people showing painting techniques but color theory is so much more useful in my opinion. Keep it up and congratulations to whoever the winner ends up being!
Thanks for all your content Sam. You explain things in a way I find easy to digest and your calm demeanor gives me some serious Bob Ross vibes. Love it, keep it up!
Color theory is fun! It even lets you get away with colors you wouldn't see on certain factions while still being visually appealing!
Painting different things is a great advice. Doing that improved my skills greatly.
I love hearing really well thought out explanations like this for painting and color theory is something all mini painters should get at least a little knowledge on it helps exponentially!
The bell is quite large, but I imagine can still fulfill the purpose of a cowbell. For there is never enough of that.
Sam of the chrome has spoken!! may torso face smile on our painting endeavors
Well done on the Skaven. It isn't often that you see "grimy" models painted in yellow.
Like they say... an amateur makes something easy look hard; a pro makes something hard look easy. You're a true pro. Thx again for another lesson. Great job man.
Every one of your videos is a treat - your tutorials impart so much helpful knowledge and your delivery is a delight! I look forward to every new video you put out.
I hadn't heard that take on using colour accents before, but it does sound extremely logical that the colour least used creates a focal point.
Another tool to use. 😁
Love how approachable you make all your video topics seem, really gets me in the mood to throw down some paint on models and improve!
Appreciate the company and knowledge shared while I paint my Brineblood Marauders.
Love Skaven! Really love the dagger of the Grey Seer and the shield of the Clan Rat.
I love the lightness to a normally dingy faction.
Grayseer being surrounded by Skaven looks way cooler than he should
That Gray Seer is brilliant.
Very helpful - thank you! That fade into green at the bottom of the shield is lovely.
Your blends are so smooth and you are so knowledgeable on color theory. Thanks for another chill video
Hi Sam, I've been watching, learning and being inspired by you for quite some time now! I really love the use of yellow with the Skaven here, it's great to see a warm colour with these chaps! Thanks for all the inspiration.
Came for the paint set give away, ended up watching several videos in a row and almost forgot to come back for the give away. Very inspiring stuff man!
That yellow is raaaaaaadd. Also, I hope to see some of these dope new stormcast models from this box painted. You don't HAVE to I guess, but I bet they would end up dope AF. Shoutout to The Army Painter as well, for upping their game like crazy this year.
Thanks for sharing all this knowledge on your videos. The seafoam robe with this yellow is so beautiful !
Thanks for this video! Colour composition is always one of the more interesting parts of painting miniatures. A big way of making a mini, or an army even, your own even when using the same old main colours.
Seeing these bright look skaven in the video was cool, excellent work on making them pop out of the screen!
It is nice to step away from what is expected out of a paint job, i.e color schemes, and go with what you want. Thank you for the video.
I really enjoy seeing the colors you used on this piece, and mostly why and how you use them to make the whole thing coherent. Can’t get any more inspired than that to continue painting on my own rats !
Amazeballs! Love the scheme and the addition of the nasty little henchmen. Good stuff.
This video appeared exactly when I needed it. I’m currently working on a multi miniature diorama, the first I’ve done in the style I’m doing, and was wanting to use a dark red to add some contrast to a snowy background/terrain. However this video made me realize red cloaks on multiple figures would distract from the scene and mood I’m trying to convey.
Love the colour scheme and how your painting style is so different from other painting channel RUclipsrs. Keep at it.
I appreciate that you made the color theory and presentation of ideas digestible to people who aren't as skilled or far into their painting journey. I feel like I actually grasped the info more than I usually do with this- especially the bit about accenting the "motion" of your piece which I hadn't thought about. Thanks for the vid! Good luck on the giveaway everyone!
Really digging these rats, Sam. The yellow is really striking. Looking forward to seeing more of the similar.
First time I've heard "color communication" but it makes a ton of sense! Exceptional video and paintjob as always!
Been struggling to figure out how I want to paint my Skaven so this video is a nice reminder of a way to approach the process.
Love the shield. The fade to grey is slick.
Man i love how you can seemingly switch styles on a dime, truly talented man! Ive seen Bisley in your art, touches of Corben and now i see Johan Egerkrans.... I will be studying this video again and again as i just can't seem to grasp the monochromatic style for whatever reason, i always mess it up.
I always appreciate your approach to painting minis.. your color schemes always seem to work well together.. it's something I struggle with, so hearing your thoughts on this certainly does help!
Introducing the yellow into the highlights of the black cloth is awesome. I am just now experimenting with that concept.......killer video as usual.
