    These figures are SO FRICKIN COOL!!! I'm a 1/35 scale military modeler who builds dioramas and has to populate them with a few figures. I'm always on the lookout for some new tips and tricks to paint them, which is how I found channels like this. Watching talented figure painters like this makes me want to give some of these fantasy figures a whirl! I never really paid attention to just how many types of miniatures were available but since I have...WOW! What an AWESOME hobby! I can definitely see the attraction to this!!

      @@vividius7951 What are your favorite types of figures and are you just an observer, or do you actually build and paint them? I make WW2 dioramas, with mostly German and US soldiers, but I have great appreciation for ANY well painted figure. I especially like "Black Watch" figures (I think that's what they're called), y'know the Scottish Highlanders wearing kilts with plaid patterns. I never painted one but that looks challenging!

    • @vividius7951
      @vividius7951 16 дней назад +1

      @@MikeS-um1nm no I don't make dioramas, I'm afraid I haven't got the technical skill although I like looking at them when they're well done. I like Napoleonic's and medieval best but I've been daring myself to get into WW2 stuff. Most of the models are perry's for the 28mm or sometimes Revell or Airfix for the smaller scale stuff 1/72. Diorama's are mostly 1/35 scale right?

    • @MikeS-um1nm
      @MikeS-um1nm 15 дней назад

      @@vividius7951 Yeah mostly for armor because SO many tank models and AFV's come in that scale. You must have good eyes (or good glasses) to work in those small scales! Keep on modeling man! It's the best hobby in the World!

    Really good video, I've also seen people stipple on the mixed tone and glazing the darker tone over that.
    It's a bit of an adjustment, but I find for lighter colours it works best to start from the highlight/ high midtone and glaze in the shadows - a lot of light colours can be a bit chalky and leave unwanted texture when glazing.

    Pretty good vid. The only thing I would say is that when you are mixing and blending you have a problem of consistency for a large model group. Either you paint the lot at once or get used to the idea that the blended colour is going to be different next time. This is because, for me at least, a blended colour and its generation not only relies on the paint, medium for thinning and its application. It is also impacted by humidity and temperature which where I am can vary greatly in a day or two. My strategy is to batch paint in units of five. Though I did do a schlock load of pox walkers where variation was a bonus.

    Glazing... cool kids using theese days... people were using glazing since like 11th century :P I've been glazing heavily till i started wetblending and feathering a lot. And also thing i picked up from Richard Gray, that is texture blending. You don't have to blend if you make van gogh out of your miniature :P

      But is it too thick????

    • @stevecatpatrick8056
      @stevecatpatrick8056 2 месяца назад +2

      Glaze medium! I use liquitex, but golden makes it too. That was was helped me, it makes it transparent but not thin. I add about 60% glaze medium/40% water or so just eyeballing it, and finally my glazes aren't becoming washes or fully opaque.

  • @jmswillow5969
    @jmswillow5969 2 месяца назад

    I always used a medium for doing this.

    • @ataraxiapainting
      @ataraxiapainting  2 месяца назад

      Guess it really depends on what kind of result you are after: if you’re trying to blend two layers sure, if you wanna apply 37744773 thin coats idk because medium = texture

  • @lunahula
    @lunahula 2 месяца назад +1

    When you understand that with these paints (miniature acrylic) all layers are transparent, even basecoat most of the time, with the exception of intended for high opacity specialised paints. You unlock the next stage of miniature painting: All of it is transparent, every layer over another layer, letting something of the layer beneath show through. So underpainting a colour under another colour can have an effect. You can paint in shadows and highlights beneath an intermediate layer, then apply them again over the top in places they aren't strong enough.
    Controlling how much you have on your brush is always key to control though, more so than shaky hands or expensive lighting set ups.
