I just wanted to point out that BTS gave and is known to give credit where credit is due. They have mentioned they were influenced by african beats and have mentioned that the dances they did are also african. Unfortunately there is a lot of cultural appropiation but i can tell you BTS is not the case. A good example is them having a latin pop inspired song and they said how they learned about latin culture first before doing the song and mentioned that their song is influenced by latin pop sounds.

Gustavo Fring He wore it because it was made for Koreans independence day when South Korea was liberated from Japan, the shirt was worn by many people in South Korea and still is. It doesn't mean disrespect towards the country, nor does it mean the whole group disrespects Japan. They weren't booted off of Japanese TV because BTS are Japanese hate extremist, it was to avoid possible controversy.

LUTHER BRAX it’s a mixture of Gqom and Korean traditional beats. That’s why the music video is a mixture of “African” attire & imagery and also Korean traditional attire & imagery. It’s a nice blend of two cultures without appropriation and I applaud them for doing it respectfully which Kpop often doesn’t do.

Before this song was released they made it known that the song was South African inspired. As a South African fan of BTS, I am immensely proud of how they have incorporated South African beats and dance moves. When I tell you that South African BTS Army were absolutely stoked and over the moon when we heard this song it would be an understatement. BTS has always given credit for where they get their creative inspirations from and this song was no different. No cultural appropriation whatsoever.
And JHope even said on his GMA interview that the dance move is called Gwara Gwara. Like they actually know what they are doing and they are also educating others on what it is.

Aliesia Growth is beautiful cause they were like every other group out there with the heavy cultural appropriation of black culture. I think them going to the US during American Hustle Life really did open their eyes to truly learning the roots of where the sounds they use come from and also the importance of learning about the culture it originates from. Since then, they’ve had a few hiccups with cultural appropriation but for the most part, they’re a part of a very small number of Korean acts that actually respectfully give credit to the cultures they get their inspiration and influences from.
i think as celebrities always in the limelight, there will always be discourse about how they present themsleves and what influences their work. i think they're pretty good at learning from their wrongs, giving back and acknowledging their inspirations
I absolutely loved this reaction! It was an actual intellectual review where you gave your ratings and opinions with perfectly valid explanations. This is how reaction videos should be. You all made very good points about cultural appropriation which to me is still something very difficult to explain because like you said how do you expect every artist to pay homage every time they draw inspiration from someone else. However, as a Black fan of BTS, I can vouch and say that they never fail to mention the many Black artists who inspire them and their music!
BTS is very diverse with the music it producers, with 2 underground rappers, 3 including Jhope (not underground) they write and produce their own music. So they experiment with genre's of music. They are brilliant in the rap area, but this song idol was an infusion of south african/korean traditionals. So was different and not to everyones tastes. That being said BTS doesnt take the music lightly thou. They were originally a hip/hop group and even spent time in the USA back in 2014 on a show called American Hustle Life, to learn about the origins of what they are singing. They even met up with warren g, so they dont take their music lightly.

Culture is something BTS puts high importance on and they do give credit where it is due. For every last song produced there is always a message that appeals to every culture, race, age, and gender. That is why their fan base is global. When reacting to another of their songs check out the lyrics, I am sure you will be blown away. TBH I am glad they incorporate other musical cultures in their music...why? Because when you want to appeal to the masses with positive messages around the world what better way than paying homage to your culture as well as others, but that's just me. I don’t know, I kind of want them to keep their channel the way it is now. It’s predominantly an African music channel and there’s so very few out there. The minute you react to Kpop, fans FLOOD your channel and before you know it, you’re another Kpop reaction channel 🤦🏾♀️

*THIS IS JUST MY OPINION. A LOT OF THIS, TO MY KNOWLEDGE, IS FACT SO PLEASE DO NOT APPROACH THIS WITH A NEGATIVE OR TOXIC MINDSET* I can see why you were worried about the cultural appropriation and mimicing, since there are many MANY artists and acts in the kpop industry that have showcased those aspects. However, groups like BTS kind of let us know that there are those groups that know right from wrong, and appreciation from appropriation. I'm pretty sure someone has touched on this already, but BTS has stated that they took inspirations from Africa, India, and historical Korea, being them wear hanboks (traditional Korean wear). Anyways, BTS is known for paying homage to inspirations and music styles, never really blatantly copying or stealing from my knowledge. And the song and video in general, is VERY very different from 'average kpop.' The video is so random and all over the place because they are mocking the stereotype that all kpop is weird and colorful and crazy. There are aspects that people who aren't big fans, or aren't fans at all, will not understand, such as RM using the filters because people judged him for it, and one of the members, V, moving through a crowd of people that is assumed to represent the mobbing they face in airports and such. The song, as well, is not like the 'average kpop' either. It talks about being who you are and not trying to be someone, or something else, for other people's entertainment. The entire album is about putting yourself before anyone else. There aren't many songs with messages such as these, and if there are, they are not talked about as much as they should be. Sorry for the long comment, but I just wanted there to be an understanding. It kind of threw me off when sis said that 'kpop is like this' when kpop is definitely not like this. If kpop were like this, then BTS wouldn't be getting the shit they were getting due to their content and message and who they are/what they represent.

Hey good reaction. Upon release of the song, BTS made it known that it was a mix of South African and Traditional Korean beats and melody. They also made sure to mention the South African dance gwara gwara. They always give credit where it’s due.
kpop do take a lot from black culture and others cultures honestly (mostly black tho), but that's what makes BTS different they give credits to every single thing they do that's one of the reasons why a lot of people don't consider BTS kpop. Other kpop artists take dances that were made by Black people that already has names and give it weird names (I won't mentions names because I don't want to be attacked lol), even when people call the Gwara Gwara dance the IDOL dance BTS try to correct them and tell them that it's called the Gwara Gwara. They also said that this song do have south African beat mixed with Korean instruments (it's in the back I don't know if you heard it lol).
I like how the girl with the hat broke down the cultural appropriation bit💜... although BTS is one of the kpop groups who actually appreciate others cultures.. they do a lot of research for their videos so they aren't offensive to others 🙂.. It’s been known that from Kpop’s inception to now the Kpop music industry has pinched and repackaged other cultures’ music - whether it was intended to be malicious or not. The conversations around this very topic are only prominent because of black social media groups that have pushed back against the co-opting of other cultures - particular black music ones. Some Kpop groups, as a result, now give so-called “credit” here and there due to this social media pressure or backlash. Also, why are you centring America? I wanna say my lil cousins are major BTS fans. And they are always aware of where BTS is coming from. So BTS has a great repetition of letting their listeners know their intentions.
There were so many nods to Africa in the video that its obviously not appropriation but appreciation. The globe on the table in the opening sequence set to Africa. The background is the Serengeti. Their suits are Ankara prints. The Gwara Gwara. Intertwined throughout the video were also old Korean cultural influences, Korean dances, symbols and in the ending scene the globe is now set to Korea. BTS has great pride in where they come from but an obvious deep appreciation for all other cultures.

I like your reaction a lot. I found it very in depth and thoughtful. You had great points, and I’m really glad you brought them up. I, personally, wouldn’t call the song or the dance cultural appropriation because BTS always make sure to give credit to where it’s due. They write and produce their own music, collaborating with a variety of producers, and during the process, they always make sure to learn about the sounds they’re working with whether it be the history or the culture of their music. They have many different inspirations, they experiment with a lot of different types of music also. They have pointed out Gwara Gwara for what it is and they know its roots, and they always make sure to spread appreciation for all cultures. Cultural appropriation is very common in K-Pop in general, but it’s a new era and BTS especially have transformed into global, culturally aware artists and I’m really proud of them. I’m glad you enjoyed the song and the video!

I am an African/African-American that is a huge fan of BTS and I contemplate everything you guys stated everyday... (Appropriation and appreciation)...I dont think anyone but BTS can honesty know whether they are appropriating or appreciating but BTS *SHOWS* sincerity and honesty when they are using hip-hop, African, African American influence in their music..... they always ask questions and look for meaning and truth behind the music... I hate KPOP because it's nothing but appropriation, but I deeply love BTS because they give off this immense aura of appreciation.

It is igqomu vele. They mentioned it in all their interviews. They even corrected an interviewer who called gwara gwara the "Idol dance". Told him straight that its a south african dance called igwara gwara. They are very respectful to other cultures

But to reiterate I guess, BTS always say it's the Gwara Gwara, never call it their own, they always give credit where credit is due. They are awfully conscious men. I was also concerned about the cultural appropriation and how others (non fans) were going to receive this. But when I asked my friends that dont listen to kpop what they thought about the song/mv they didnt think it was appropriation and actually thought it was cool to see a korean group dancing igwara gwara + dancing to a south african beat. Also, please note that BTS & Bighit did they research with regards to African music. Their ceo/ producer even said that afrobeats are the future, amd spent alot of time in South Africa doing research. They also gave the songs influence some credit. BTS is one of the few groups who truly appreciate and give credit to other cultures. They had a few incidents in the beginning of their career but when they get called out (and their fans have no problem with calling them out) they educate themselves and try their best to improve. And they really do. They originally started as a hip hop group and they educated themselves deeply on the history of hip hop/rap black culture ect.. while promoting this song they always always mention the South African influences and when interviews ask the boy to teach them the dance they always explain where it comes from :)
you'll actually be surprised how wide BTS music discography is and how much they aren't afraid to do a lot of different genres. they appreciate and respect other's cultures. they have their own sound, really.

During interviews the do express there love and influence. They explain how this in many interviews about this song. BTS are different from other Kpop groups. They are more on the Hip Hop side though the do keep some of the pop In some song they started with hip hop because thats what they grew up on.. As a South African I can tell you that they gave credit but it wasn't only gqlom it had a Korean sound too as well as them doing their traditional dances in their traditional clothes combining the infamous gwara gwara too. They don't appropriate and have a very deep appreciation for other cultures. On the fence about cultural because I don't mind if they wear or wear dreads it doesn't bother me honestly
They performed at the o2 arena on the 9/10th of October. I can definitely say BTS ALWAYS WITHOUT FAIL mention all the influences they’ve used and pay homage and respect to the culture. At least in this particular sense, BTS and their in house producers specifically talked about how they were interested in South Africa music and wanted to incorporate it. This is so different than their original sound! Just like how pop has moved from R&B & slow jams to more EDM, Kpop is the same way. BTS came out as rappers and singers in the R&B & Hip Hop Genre. They still stay true to that but have started experimenting with EDM the last 2-3 years

I’ve been getting into Kpop for about a year now, and from the research I’ve done and things I’ve read, they’ve been influenced by and APPRECIATING black culture since at least the 80s-90s. Anytime I watch or read an interview or a live that any Kpop group or artist has done, they always list black artists, celebrities, and people in history as their inspiration, and they acknowledge that they got their sound or influence from black music and culture. A few even know a lot about black history, acknowledge black history month, and visit black history museums and such when they come to America. I’ve had a few conversations with my mom, aunt, and grandma after I’ve shown them some of my favorite Kpop artists, and they asked the same thing about cultural appropriation, and I explained that for me it isn’t appropriation because from what I’ve personally witnessed, they always give credit where credit is due. So, that’s just my two cents, but I’m also glad that music is so global now. Before Kpop, I was getting into Latin/reggaeton music, and now I’m getting into African music, and it’s amazing! BTS has a huge fandom, and I think it’s awesome they incorporate different cultures into their music and credits them to reach out to their world-wide fans. It doesn't mean disrespect towards the country, nor does it mean the whole group disrespects Japan. They weren't booted off of Japanese TV because BTS are Japanese hate extremist, it was to avoid possible controversy.

LUTHER BRAX it’s a mixture of Gqom and Korean traditional beats. That’s why the music video is a mixture of “African” attire & imagery and also Korean traditional attire & imagery. It’s a nice blend of two cultures without appropriation and I applaud them for doing it respectfully which Kpop often doesn’t do.
BTS are amazing but there are TONS of kpop idols who write there own music.....Got7, Monsta X, Seventeen, Stray kids….just to name a few :)

Before this song was released they made it known that the song was South African inspired. As a South African fan of BTS, I am immensely proud of how they have incorporated South African beats and dance moves. When I tell you that South African BTS Army were absolutely stoked and over the moon when we heard this song it would be an understatement.
BTS has always given credit for where they get their creative inspirations from and this song was no different.

I liked the fact that you all expressed your thoughts :) and btw bts always mentions that this song is influenced by South African music and they also mention that the dance is called gwara gwara! they really appreciate many different cultures (and I totally agree with you there is a lot of cultural appropriation in kpop in general but thankfully bts is not like that which is one thing I like about them)
Aliesia Growth is beautiful cause they were like every other group out there with the heavy cultural appropriation of black culture. I think them going to the US during American Hustle Life really did open their eyes to truly learning the roots of where the sounds they use come from and also the importance of learning about the culture it originates from. Since then, they’ve had a few hiccups with cultural appropriation but for the most part, they’re a part of a very small number of Korean acts that actually respectfully give credit to the cultures they get their inspiration and influences from.

You all made very good points about cultural appropriation which to me is still something very difficult to explain because like you said how do you expect every artist to pay homage every time they draw inspiration from someone else. However, as a Black fan of BTS, I can vouch and say that they never fail to mention the many Black artists who inspire them and their music!

BTS is very diverse with the music it producers, with 2 underground rappers, 3 including Jhope (not underground) they write and produce their own music. So they experiment with genre's of music. They are brilliant in the rap area, but this song idol was an infusion of south african/korean traditionals. So was different and not to everyones tastes. That being said BTS doesnt take the music lightly thou. They were originally a hip/hop group and even spent time in the USA back in 2014 on a show called American Hustle Life, to learn about the origins of what they are singing. They even met up with warren g, so they dont take their music lightly.

Culture is something BTS puts high importance on and they do give credit where it is due. For every last song produced there is always a message that appeals to every culture, race, age, and gender. That is why their fan base is global. When reacting to another of their songs check out the lyrics, I am sure you will be blown away. TBH I am glad they incorporate other musical cultures in their music...why? Because when you want to appeal to the masses with positive messages around the world what better way than paying homage to your culture as well as others, but that's just me. I can see why you were worried about the cultural appropriation and mimicing, since there are many MANY artists and acts in the kpop industry that have showcased those aspects. However, groups like BTS kind of let us know that there are those groups that know right from wrong, and appreciation from appropriation. I'm pretty sure someone has touched on this already, but BTS has stated that they took inspirations from Africa, India, and historical Korea, being them wear hanboks (traditional Korean wear). Anyways, BTS is known for paying homage to inspirations and music styles, never really blatantly copying or stealing from my knowledge.
And the song and video in general, is VERY very different from 'average kpop.' The video is so random and all over the place because they are mocking the stereotype that all kpop is weird and colorful and crazy. There are aspects that people who aren't big fans, or aren't fans at all, will not understand, such as RM using the filters because people judged him for it, and one of the members, V, moving through a crowd of people that is assumed to represent the mobbing they face in airports and such. The song, as well, is not like the 'average kpop' either. It talks about being who you are and not trying to be someone, or something else, for other people's entertainment. The entire album is about putting yourself before anyone else. There aren't many songs with messages such as these, and if there are, they are not talked about as much as they should be.
Sorry for the long comment, but I just wanted there to be an understanding. It kind of threw me off when sis said that 'kpop is like this' when kpop is definitely not like this. If kpop were like this, then BTS wouldn't be getting the shit they were getting due to their content and message and who they are/what they represent.

Hey good reaction. Upon release of the song, BTS made it known that it was a mix of South African and Traditional Korean beats and melody. They also made sure to mention the South African dance gwara gwara. They always give credit where it’s due.

kpop do take a lot from black culture and others cultures honestly (mostly black tho), but that's what makes BTS different they give credits to every single thing they do that's one of the reasons why a lot of people don't consider BTS kpop. Other kpop artists take dances that were made by Black people that already has names and give it weird names (I won't mentions names because I don't want to be attacked lol), even when people call the Gwara Gwara dance the IDOL dance BTS try to correct them and tell them that it's called the Gwara Gwara. They also said that this song do have south African beat mixed with Korean instruments (it's in the back I don't know if you heard it lol).
I like how the girl with the hat broke down the cultural appropriation bit💜... although BTS is one of the kpop groups who actually appreciate others cultures.. they do a lot of research for their videos so they aren't offensive to others 🙂.. I think we have to remind ourselves a lot that culture appropriation is when someone attempts to claim somthing.. and kpop doesn't usually do that... It’s been known that from Kpop’s inception to now the Kpop music industry has pinched and repackaged other cultures’ music - whether it was intended to be malicious or not.
The conversations around this very topic are only prominent because of black social media groups that have pushed back against the co-opting of other cultures - particular black music ones. Some Kpop groups, as a result, now give so-called “credit” here and there due to this social media pressure or backlash.
Also, why are you centring America? This is about how a Kpop song was inspired by African music, culture and style.

There were so many nods to Africa in the video that its obviously not appropriation but appreciation. The globe on the table in the opening sequence set to Africa. The background is the Serengeti. Their suits are Ankara prints. The Gwara Gwara. Intertwined throughout the video were also old Korean cultural influences, Korean dances, symbols and in the ending scene the globe is now set to Korea. BTS has great pride in where they come from but an obvious deep appreciation for all other cultures.

I, personally, wouldn’t call the song or the dance cultural appropriation because BTS always make sure to give credit to where it’s due. They write and produce their own music, collaborating with a variety of producers, and during the process, they always make sure to learn about the sounds they’re working with whether it be the history or the culture of their music. They have many different inspirations, they experiment with a lot of different types of music also. They have pointed out Gwara Gwara for what it is and they know its roots, and they always make sure to spread appreciation for all cultures.
Cultural appropriation is very common in K-Pop in general, but it’s a new era and BTS especially have transformed into global, culturally aware artists and I’m really proud of them.

I am an African/African-American that is a huge fan of BTS and I contemplate everything you guys stated everyday... (Appropriation and appreciation)...I dont think anyone but BTS can honesty know whether they are appropriating or appreciating but BTS *SHOWS* sincerity and honesty when they are using hip-hop, African, African American influence in their music..... they always ask questions and look for meaning and truth behind the music... I hate KPOP because it's nothing but appropriation, but I deeply love BTS because they give off this immense aura of appreciation.

It is igqomu vele. They mentioned it in all their interviews. They even corrected an interviewer who called gwara gwara the "Idol dance". Told him straight that its a south african dance called igwara gwara. They are very respectful to other cultures
I like you. I would explain, but to be honest, everything I want to say has already been said in the comments. But to reiterate I guess, BTS always say it's the Gwara Gwara, never call it their own, they always give credit where credit is due. They are awfully conscious men. They always speak about how you should always stand up for yourself and for what's right, no matter your gender identity, skin color, where you are from, your background, whatever. I was also concerned about the cultural appropriation and how others (non fans) were going to receive this. But when I asked my friends that dont listen to kpop what they thought about the song/mv they didnt think it was appropriation and actually thought it was cool to see a korean group dancing igwara gwara + dancing to a south african beat.
Also, please note that BTS & Bighit did they research with regards to African music. Their ceo/ producer even said that afrobeats are the future, amd spent alot of time in South Africa doing research. Also, BTS has never failed to mention that the song has south african influences or that the dance is igwara gwara.

its not all kpop that gets that many views...just BTS and a few others, but BTS still gets the most by far...that's bc Kpop isn't a genre...it is an industry of pop from Korea. Ahhh thank you so much for reacting to this!!! I had a lot of the same worries concerning appropriation and I'm happy to say that in their korean promotions they did mention the gwara gwara by name. They also gave the songs influence some credit. BTS is one of the few groups who truly appreciate and give credit to other cultures. They had a few incidents in the beginning of their career but when they get called out (and their fans have no problem with calling them out) they educate themselves and try their best to improve. And they really do. They originally started as a hip hop group and they educated themselves deeply on the history of hip hop/rap black culture ect.. while promoting this song they always always mention the South African influences and when interviews ask the boy to teach them the dance they always explain where it comes from :)

They are more on the Hip Hop side though the do keep some of the pop In some song they started with hip hop because thats what they grew up on.. As a South African I can tell you that they gave credit but it wasn't only gqlom it had a Korean sound too as well as them doing their traditional dances in their traditional clothes combining the infamous gwara gwara too. They don't appropriate and have a very deep appreciation for other cultures. On the fence about cultural because I don't mind if they wear or wear dreads it doesn't bother me honestly
They performed at the o2 arena on the 9/10th of October. I can definitely say BTS ALWAYS WITHOUT FAIL mention all the influences they’ve used and pay homage and respect to the culture. At least in this particular sense, BTS and their in house producers specifically talked about how they were interested in South Africa music and wanted to incorporate it. Also, they actually call their dance “gwara gwara” in interviews when asked to show it, so they’re still sharing where it actually comes from. Thank you for reacting :)

BTS came out as rappers and singers in the R&B & Hip Hop Genre.
They still stay true to that but have started experimenting with EDM the last 2-3 years

I’ve been getting into Kpop for about a year now, and from the research I’ve done and things I’ve read, they’ve been influenced by and APPRECIATING black culture since at least the 80s-90s. Anytime I watch or read an interview or a live that any Kpop group or artist has done, they always list black artists, celebrities, and people in history as their inspiration, and they acknowledge that they got their sound or influence from black music and culture. A few even know a lot about black history, acknowledge black history month, and visit black history museums and such when they come to America. I’ve had a few conversations with my mom, aunt, and grandma after I’ve shown them some of my favorite Kpop artists, and they asked the same thing about cultural appropriation, and I explained that for me it isn’t appropriation because from what I’ve personally witnessed, they always give credit where credit is due. So, that’s just my two cents, but I’m also glad that music is so global now. Before Kpop, I was getting into Latin/reggaeton music, and now I’m getting into African music, and it’s amazing!

Yas~! Love the South African sounds mixed with traditional Korean gongs. BTS spoke of the gwara gwara and South African beats when they are asked about IDOL and its production. BTS has a huge fandom, and I think it’s awesome they incorporate different cultures into their music and credits them to reach out to their world-wide fans. They have songs with Latin influences and other countries as well. Please do more reactions! Love to hear honest reactions. :)
