Around this time maybe a few months before Idol came out people started calling them westernized because of how big they were getting in America, talking about how they were losing their native essence or some dumb bs. So they came out with Idol and made it as Korean as possible, and not only just Korean but as you can see there is also some African culture in there as well, including in the choreo.
Now every Idol group is heading toward America and still doesn't accept BTS paved the way.
It's always funny to me when people call kpop artist westernized like that's a big insult. A lot of their music are influenced by the west, even the training system started from the west before they branches out. A lot of these groups takes the training system literally from American boy bands.

You’re right about BTS intentionally making this MV… a lot 😂😂
Around this time, bc they were starting to become REALLY popular in America, BTS started getting accused of being white washed or westernized.
So what did they do when making the MV for a song abt loving themselves? They made the MV sooo stereotypically “kpop” and soooo Korean to really show their haters that it doesn’t matter what you say abt us we’re going to do whatever we like (and stay true to ourselves and our roots in the process) bc we love ourselves.
I would suggest watching the explanation video by DKDKTV either on the channel or in your own time. It explains the significant symbolism in this video. Every part of this MV has meaning. Almost all of it is Korean cultural references. DKDKTV is a good way to get insight into the video.

this song and video has a LOT of Korean culture references, I suggest watching the explanation too!! They were getting really popular in America in 2017/2018 and people were saying they're becoming “too westernized” or “forgetting their identities” and this is their response 💀
The instrumental of this track is a fusion of traditional Korean instruments and Afro beats (a popular genre from Africa) and I love that they visually represented that by incorporating so many elements of African and Korean culture
Yeaaa I feel like not many people know about the African Korean fusion this mv has but it’s soo cool. I especially loved how they incorporated a few dance moves that originated in Africa in their choreo! :))

Everything may seem random but actually literally everything represents something. The DKDKTV explanation video picks out a number of the images and will make you see this video with new respect for the coherence of the imagery in what an uniformed person might see as random chaotic throwing of paint at the canvas.

Bunny in the Moon is part of Chuseok (Korean equivalent of Thanksgiving) it's one of the biggest Holiday in South Korea. So putting that in their video isn't random.
Everytime you watch a Bts mv, try to look for explanation video. Not because someone will be better at getting that, but because the cultural reference and language word plays become very understandable when explained

Idol mv is not only wild & so colorful but it's a celebration song of self-love. if you watch the MMA 2018 performance you will see.
A lot of the elements they threw in were related to celebrations and/or festivals such as the full moon with rabbit is often seen in Chinese mid-Autumn festival drawings, the silk hanbok coats they wore which Korean usually wear them in big NY/weddings/important events, the tranditional lion dances which again for festivals/celebrations, the colourful strings/decor all such a party vibe.
They should react to their live performances, like year-end award shows, including MAMA, MMA, etc.

The choreo for this is amazing. There is a video of the stands shaking while they performed this at an award show. The looks of the people (other idols) in the stands was crazy.

You really need to watch the interpretation video on this Idol MV. There is significance to the Bunny in the Moon and a lot of other things in the video.
Adding to what a lot of people have already said...Haters also started to complain about them using “too much green screen and CGI”, so, of course BTS decided to give them a huge middle finger and made the video as bright, loud, obviously CGI and obnoxious as possible. The song is basically them telling the world they can say whatever they want, they’re uniquely them and their hateful babble is inconsequential to their global success.

Also...the inspiration behind was an appreciation for African music as stated by the label itself. Specifically South Africa. It's supposed to be a Korean and African fusion. People conveniently leave that out for some reason. The outfits, the dances, and other things were taken from African culture.

yeah this mv is a ride lol remains their most crazy/chaotic mv ksksj they just let the boys go crazy in a crazy set and added an even crazier edition :)
This video included several hater call-outs, such as that one time that Tae talked about not wearing his glasses because people have told him 'he doesn't look good in them' (wtf) (thus him wearing glasses pretty much throughout this entire video), and that one time people were critical of Namjoon using cute filters while he was on vlive because it didn't 'fit his image'. There are a few others that I can't remember. But yeah, aside from being a general call-out song, this video includes commentary on very specific instances that happened within the fandom towards BTS.
And people saying Jin is kinda arrogant or shit like that cuz of the WWH title and he's basically saying "its okay im in love with myself " 💀💀

Every thing in a BTS can video means something or is there for a reason. That also goes for k-Pop in general, even if we don't understand it at first. By the way, you're right, I watch BTS videos many times to see what I missed, read the lyrics again, and the explanation video because it's usually deeper than what I thought. Those views are not just ARMY streaming, we genuinely want to understand the song first😁
