"The reason why I love this so much is because BTS actually took what haters always say they hate about them and made a whole music video with it. It's like "Do you want to criticize me? Here you have it, do it". The video is just the word irony. Before people said they hated the bright colors in DNA, they took them and did an incredible colorful mv. People said they hated the green screen, they used it and even made it look bad in purpose. They told RM to stop using filters, he uses them in the mv. They told JHope to stop making weird sounds, here you hear them. They even told Taehyung to stop using those glasses but he used them in the mv. I just love how they are saying "You can say whatever you want about me, I'll love myself, this is who I am". Remember when Yoongi said that everybody's reaction to this would be "How can they do this?" And hell yeah it was!"

I don´t want to disrespest anyone here this is just what I Know bc I´m African and I heard everybody saying that those moves are from Gambino but no, this is an African move called GWARA GWARA that went very famous all around the world and Gambino did it(he actually dances pretty well)I just wanted to update or informate you about this I´m not trying to be a hater bc I really really love Gambino but this is my culture that I need to defend it.Not to get to defensive is just bc we are, for my point of view, an underrated continent and just knowing that BTS danced it is very amusing and touching at the same time to be included in their work.This is why stan those guys!!

the visuals of idol is really similar to the visual art genre "kitsch" which are basically tacky or of poor taste but are often portrayed with a satirical undertone to it and appreciated in a sort of self-aware, ironic, and humorous way.

The song is a combination of South African x Traditional Korean vibes; Like a slap to those who say they're becoming 'Westernized'. The choreo consists mostly of Traditional Korean dances AND their old choroes. The crazy art(making the video look like a crack video) is intentional as their past MVs' arts were criticized as weird when they actually hold a lot of meanings and hints for their albums' storyline etc. Actually, even the art in this 'IDOL' MV has a lot of meanings and hints, it's just that they're going places which is why we can't seem to catch up with them. The overall MV(from my opinion) purposely contains the criticisms, prejudice and complaints they faced back then until now all compiled up hence the lyrics of the song focusing on the message - 'Love myself'. It's like a slap to the face for antis; BTS is implying that they don't care what others criticize etc, they're just going to keep on doing their stuff and appreciate themselves be it their beauty or flaws.
Idk if ARMYs agree with me or not but this my point of view😅 And some have the same thoughts as mine soo yeahh...

The music video also references things the were told 'not to do' by fans i.e. when RM was live on vlive the fans told him to stop using the cute animal filters, V not to wear glasses cause they made him look 'ugly' and so on.

They originally were supposed to be a straight hip hop group but their small label decided that in order to survive and succeed in the industry they needed to be in kpop. So they have struggled with being kpop idols and being the object of mockery while still fulfilling their roles and being comfortable in their own skin. Now that they broke into the US (the fandom drug them in, they wanted to be successful everywhere of course but didn’t target the US general public) they had this BIG pressure of how to deal with American perception of them. This MV went FULL THROTTLE on the stereotypical kpop visuals, while telling their story. Thy know eyes are on them, they are performing like dolls, they don’t care what people think of them. They are going to act like ‘idols’ and ‘artists’ and everyone can mind their own business.

OHOHOHOHOHOH CAN'T STOP ME LIVIN MYSELF
The song is a response to the critics who went after the 3 rappers (who all were underground rappers) for joining a boyband and become idols. So they tell them, they love themselves, they are standing with their choices, they love themselves and what they do.
I could be wrong, but BTS has had a couple album sets that follow themes. All of their songs kind of form this long, complex story line, particularly from the most beautiful moments in life, onward (but honestly, I think all of their songs carry it through from themes in the first albums, onwards). Anyways so for this album, it is closing out three albums in "Love Yourself," the first album being like in a love that seems amazing, but there is this unhealthy aspect to it, the second, realizing that it isn't real love and the struggle, and the third album, i believe, is closing out the theme of being able to love yourself (but, again, I could be wrong since I am still listening through it). They seem to usually have songs that vary, like ballads, cyphers, really hype songs, and heavy songs within an album, but all center fairly around the theme. You guys should check out their cyphers, the song Bepsae, and the song "Hip Hop Lover," if you enjoy the rapping. Also Agust D's mix tape, who is a member of the band. The two other rappers have mixtapes but I have not heard it in full yet.

South Korean boy band BTS (Bangtan Boys/Bangtan Sonyeondan or "bulletproof boy scouts" in Korean) their name was explained by their company Big Hit Entertainment and stated that the name represents the group’s “against-the-social-norm-and-pressure” concept. As the “Bulletproof Scouts”, the members will fight against the societal “bullets” of stereotypes and repression to protect their values and music. BTS has alot of meaning, in Korean they are called BANGTAN SONYEONDAN which translates to BULLETPROOF BOYSCOUTS but the English meaning for BTS is BEYOND THE SCENE.

Im a new subbie and i love ur reactions..
People are giving bits and pieces of the boy's bio so I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents too. In no particular order.
1) J-hope was a famous underground dancer who won several awards before joing BTS. His mixtape did incredibly well on the World Digital Songs Chart and he was the second solo Korean artist to place on the Artist 100. Haters tried to force him to quit BTS in his earlier years because he was 'ugly' and did not fit BTS's image... (clearly they need their eyes checked if that's what Ugly is)
2) Tae-hyung a.k.a V was suppose to be a farmer. He was scouted at an audition he went to in order to support his friend. He was voted most handsome face in 2017 (I believe this was a global poll) He was originally a hidden member and the last to be revealed during their debut.
3) Jin joined Bighit with the intention of becoming an actor and was instead placed in BTS. He could not sing or dance prior to training. He's incredibly smart and very diligent when it comes to self improvement.
4) RM is a genius with an IQ of 148, he tested into Korea's top 1 percent in academics. He taught himself English in junior high by watching friends. He also speaks Japanese. He was formerly known as Rap monster but changed his stage name to RM (Real Me) to reflect him maturing.
5) Suga is an incredible artist who raps about social taboos and is know as a savage in regards to remarks he makes or answers he gives. Suga is known as one of the fastest 'idol' rappers and it's no joke. His other artist name is Agust D. which is D.t. Suga backwards.
6)Jimin was a contemporary dancer who graduated top of his class prior to joining Bighit. He struggled a lot with body image because the fandom tried to dictate how he should look.
7) Jungkook is know as the 'golden maknae' (maknae is the title given to the youngest member in the group) He is refereed to as 'golden' because he excels at almost everything he does.
8) In Korean pop groups the members are assigned positions which helps them promote and appeal to the public (i.e. Visual, Dance-line, Leader, Vocal, Rapper, Center, Maknae... etc)
9) In korean culture 'age' is absolutely important so there are titles which are attached to age groups which denotes respect.
oppa- females addressing older males
hyung- males addressing older males (can also be used to refer to ones older brother)
noona- males addressing older females (can also mean sister)
unnie - females addressing older females
dongsaeng - younger girl or boy than you (can also mean younger sibling)
10) Korean culture promotes the familial bond, so in the groups they literally think of one and other as big/ little brother and respect one and other as such.
11) Army is what BTS calls their fan base. You will often hear Army say 'BTS is not a group, it's a family'. Because after living together for 6 years they refer and support each other as family.
12) BTS stands for Bangtan Sonyeondan which means Bulletproof Boy Scouts. And more recently they added the meaning 'Beyond the Scene' to the acronym.

And yes, the rappers songs are super fire, check their songs like Outro:Tear, Ddaeng (there's a lot of worldplay here so there's an explanation video you can search up) they also have their own individual songs and mixtape.

RM the leader and 1 of the rappers of the group who produces & co-produced, writes/composes many of the songs is a genius with an IQ of 148 and you will notice in other songs if you go in depth how so-it takes a lot to analyze how deep many of his songs are plus every time people study it more the more layers they discover.
Several other members are known to be very intelligent/talented as well
Suga and Jhope the other two rapper and sometimes Jungkook, the youngest, (mainly vocalist but also sub rapper (occasionally rapped in bts songs in the past)) also produce and writes- other members contribute occasionally to the writing process/and/or their portions of the songs/solos.
Suga is the one making the most songs not only for their group but to other artists and has been awarded a pristine award as artist producer for hit song sung by artist Suran.
I suggest for some songs couple it also with some brief explanation videos to react to to help especially from channels like xCeleste and DKDKTV to help navigate occasionally
One you would really like is Ddaeng (lyrics and live performance and add the explanation by a Korean)rappers diss track to the hater however they use the word in about 7 or more different ways and there is video that is a favourite of reactors that the song was explained by a Korean and people realized how much was missed out in English subs because the depth could not captured with it and they appreciated it more.

Many of their hand movements have special meanings. Also, each song has a hidden message that tells part of a longer a story. In order to get the full story, you need to watch all their videos.
In this video is actually great because they do so many stuff that doesn’t seem like it seems like it’s a big deal, but when you look into it, it means a lot. Let’s start of with the guy with the red hair who you said had the greatest hair. So, him going and changing his hair color is a big deal because when he first debuted his fans told him that they didn’t like wild colors on him, so he didn’t have any... until now, his name is Jungkook. Then the guy with the shirt with a heart and stripe shirt, he wears that with glasses because the shirt came from an interviewer who said that his own shirt was “ridiculous” and him wearing this shirt because he wants to show everyone that even if your wearing something that isn’t expensive as the others, it doesn’t matter as long as you like your clothing. He’s also wearing glasses because at one point someone told him that his glasses don’t look good, but in this he ignores that and he does what he wants, his name is Taehyung. Jimin in this doesn’t stick to just one concept throughout the video, he changes with the music showing that he has these different sides. He’s the one with the orange fan while walking on the yellow path. He does the high note. So, onto RM he puts those filters on his face because at one point someone said that he should stop doing that. In this he’s like “I don’t care if you think I should stop, I am going to do what makes me happy.” Then Hoseok the one with the Bugs Bunny shirt, he wears this to point out to people that they think that he is “flippant” and he’s not. He’s a great dancer and always tries to push new clothing styles. Look up Hoseok Fashion and honestly I am always inspired by him. Oof this is long. Okay onto the man who wears the Snow White shirt, he does this because people always point out the fact that he has white skin, he’s wearing this shirt as both a fight against like “normal” ways of wearing clothes for men and to show that he doesn’t care what people say. Onto the oldest member Jin, he is the one who says something along the lines of “I love my-myself” and he says this because so many people call him conceited for being confident, but in reality he inspires so many people by showing that confidence. The haters don’t realize how much he shows to people who don’t feel the same, but want to. He keeps on being confident because he knows it helps. Alrighty, if you read to the end, I suggest you also follow their Twitter account, it’ll show you a more genuine side of themselves. They also have a RUclips Red series called Burn The Stage.
4:21 that dance isn’t the gambino it’s the GWARA GWARA, a South African dance and this song was inspired by South Africa’s house music scene so that’s why they’re doing South African dances.
