English Class at Georgia Tech REACTS to BTS (방탄소년단) "IDOL"

Response to comment concerns about laughter: At times, students were laughing at visuals in the video, such as the shark and sound suits as we had not yet discussed these symbols, not the BTS members themselves. Likewise, at times, students were laughing at the teacher dancing along at the front of the classroom out of frame. I encourage you to watch to the end of the video where there is some brief discussion.
As an introduction to their English Composition class focusing on media and participatory cultures, these students reacted to BTS's new MV, #IDOL. In class, students will be watching and engaging with the "Bangtan Universe," from HYYH to WINGS to LOVE YOURSELF. In many ways, this class considers transmedia storytelling and how audience interact with that storytelling. For example, students will read "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" and watch "Spring Day" to see how the two texts interacted. They will also consider audience reactions as "participatory culture." Such as this reaction video!
Yes, they did all of this in a college-level English course.
Students decided how various elements of this video adhered to and departed from the genre conventions of "reaction videos." After a couple months, the students will analyze the data for this video and consider how the video circulated.

MORE DETAILED DISCUSSION:
This is a composition class at a university and the course emphasizes different composing modes (written, oral, visual, electronic, nonverbal, etc.). Students learn about rhetoric, rhetorical situations, genres and genres conventions, audiences, and aspects of the class theme, convergence culture. The course theme ("convergence culture") allows students to approach different composing tasks (often with a media component) from the perspective of "fandom." That is, different parts of the course emphasize different elements of fandom. Topics such as “participatory culture,” “knowledge communities,” “transmedia storytelling,” and “transformative works” are approached through source media such as BTS, Star Wars, Marvel, and Harry Potter. Through the theme, students develop their skills in critical text analysis and production. In this case, they analyze the BTS music videos’ transmedia storytelling and considered how that transmedia storytelling is engaged by various knowledge communities creating a “participatory culture” by “making meaning.” (Essentially, how the theories keep the fandom actively thinking and engaged with BTS's music. Big Hit's team does this extremely well, and so BTS is a good example.) In terms of learning outcomes, students take theory, apply it analytically, then clearly articulate their thoughts regarding how the different modes were utilized by the Big Hit production team and how that inspired conversation within the fandom. (As an ARMY, I recognize the way that the fandom is "activated" through circulation between various media platforms and how the storytelling of BTS's discography [including songs and MVs] continuously cultivates conversation within the fandom.)
As for this reaction video, we discuss genre, circulation, and distribution. Essentially, how fandoms circulate content across media platforms and how that ultimately impacts the creation and distribution of texts in today’s world. “Reaction videos” have certain genre conventions. That is to say that there are elements that you see in a vast majority of reaction videos-- camera angles, tones, lighting, even backgrounds. Together, we watched several reaction videos and put our observations into action by creating our own reaction video. (Just as students might do in the future when creating other texts within their respective fields.) Students chose different elements of the reaction video genre to opt-into and opt-out-of, which we thought would impact the circulation of the reaction video. Students will analyze the data provided by RUclips to see how our adherence to or departure from convention impacted the way the media circulated. (This is meant to put theory into actual practice.)
Essentially, these activities are meant to cultivate skills and knowledges, which would then help students to explore topics critically within their particular disciplines as they advance further in their studies. As an instructor, I hope that the course provides building blocks on which they can further their understandings of modes and media, rhetoric, and audience. Thank you for your interest!

Nikki I actually have those desks in my class. And contrary to popular belief, they are actually very uncomfortable to sit on considering you have only one way to get in to sit and very little desktop space for laptop and journals. And although the rolling part might be nice when it comes to group work the hard part is that the desk top actually moves forward too and it’s very inconvenient when you lean forward to write/type something and the desk moves away from you too.

It is very common that some gentlemen from reaction videos intentionally being silly at first because they are jealousy. But the quality of video and skills of BTS lay them down and make them to respect BTS. Not just this video but most of people who watch BTS video first time.

This is why BTS is amazing especially Namjoon. Namjoon is an intellectual. He loves reading books and uses those as inspiration along with his experiences when writing songs. Thank you for spreading bts's message through english class.

I hope they look into the cultural refs and lyrics now that they've seen the MV. I love how so many of them had heard of BTS beforehand tho lol. I will say it was difficult to understand what the class was saying when they were speaking, audio was low.
외국에서 수업시간에 방탄소년단을 다루는 경우가 있다는 이야기를 말로만 들었었는데 영어를 못해서 잘은 모르겠지만 바로 이 경우가 그 경우가 아닌가 싶어요. 직접보니까 감회가 새롭네요! 자세하게 무슨 말씀을 하신건지는 잘 모르겠습니다만 방탄소년단에게 애정을 보여주신 것 같아 기쁩니다! 한국에서는 방탄소년단을 비롯해서 '아이돌'에 대한 편견이 심합니다... 그래서 수업시간에 진지하게 다루는 경우는 전혀 없죠. 학생들이 아이돌 뮤비를 보거나 노래를 듣고 좋아하는 행위 자체를 안좋게 보는 경우가 대부분입니다. 그들의 음악은 진짜이고 그 속은 탄탄한데 말이죠. 편견에서 한 발짝 물러서서 제대로 들으면 그들은 자신의 이전의 행동들에 대해 부끄러워 할 것이라고 확신합니다. 한국 가수의 음악을 한국보다 먼저 알아봐주고 사랑해줘서 감사합니다. 우리나라도 깨어있는 정신을 가진 사람들이 많아졌으면 합니다...

The filters on Namjoon weren’t Snapchat, they were actually filters from the VLive app, which is an app for K-Pop idols to go live. There is a reason that he has the filters. When he was live he was looking the filters, a “fan” told him to stop using the filters so he said okay and apologized. Since the song and the album is about loving yourself and the lyrics for that part is, “I know what I am, I know what I want. I never gon’ to change, I never gon’ trade,” He’s saying that he can do what he wants, and he knows what he wants to do.

Oh my! This is fantastic! ARMYs could tell them about all the research and reading and thinking that goes into deciphering a BTS MV! Whether it is clues or hints for the BU story line or a hint for the name of the next album, or the next genre of music they will use, we have to figure it out. This is the most aggravating and the most fun thing ever.

Seeing this video makes me more excited about other ppl or country treacting to BTS first I thought they laughing because they didn’t like it but in the last part when the teacher ask if they know BTS they say “YES” w/ a big smile in their face....and they like BTS!!!
