I think that is a brilliant update. I personally have 105 Di2, so no buttons but only paddle buttons, but I am one of those people who have embraced the Di2 fully synched operation, meaning that I let the Di2 do its wizardry with the front derailleur anyway (it is customizable so you can get it to do more or less what you want). That means I do all my shifting on the right hand lever and have the two paddle buttons on the left hand lever set up to toggle my Garmin head unit. From what I understand there will be countless opportunities to use these free buttons to operate loads of connected devices, so it could be turning on and off lights, operating camera like e.g. Go-Pro, head phones/ear buds, or specific tasks on your head unit.
While this is a good update, the fact it requires a hard connection to the shifters to install when almost no owner will have the hardware required for that is a big miss
I use the lever buttons to change the screen pages on my wahoo roam.
One win for Sram I guess. Firmware updates are completely wireless. All you need is a phone and an internet connection.
People can hate on sram but at least you can update everything from your phone.
I do wonder if sram will update force/rival levers with extra buttons, or maybe allow wireless blips to control other stuff.
I Just got an Advertisement in the sram axs app last monday, that you can control the Bikecomputer with the Wireless blips now
12spd Di2 is BT via phone app? I have a wire hidden in my frame that is connected to my battery for updating. Takes a few seconds to access & connect. Both systems work.
@@dvs70 yes 12 speed is semi-wireless, so no wired connection to shifters unless you add it yourself, since it's an option.
Slightly more steps to update the firmware 2 times in its lifetime Vs a lifetime of dropped chains. I know which I prefer
I updated my Wahoo today and the app said that Sram wireless blips can control the head unit now.
Of the two hood buttons, I only use the ‘next’ (right) head unit button and almost never use the lap (left) button so I guess I configure that button for the front derailleur - but I think for most of us our muscle memory for changing up and down on the levers is so embedded that the awkward position of the button on top of the hood is not gonna get a lot of use. Still, nice to have the option of configuration
You can use long press and to push. So you have 3 options on each hood so you can have next and previous and lap on the right and up down shift on the left or put it on the paddle and get a extra button for something else
Amazing that wireless system requires wires to update. Isn't this 2024?
Today there are still many "technologically disabled" and Shimano knows it......😂
yeah, also that brick adapter into the pc costs like 300 bucks 😂
Instead of a brick, why not a simple USB cable with a di2 connector on the other end? What on earth does the brick hardware do that software can't do?
@@davidh7414 I have no idea what it does, but for that price I'd expect a small computer that can update the software on its own, not a stupid adapter. One of the usual british channels listed as a positive for the new GRX that the charging cable no longer costs 90£, only 45. Just a dumb usb cable with a proprietary connector on the other side. Wholesale manufacturer price is like 80 cents? Shimano absolutely rips you off on the little stuff.
@@davidh7414 Surely shimano can make the update over wireless. The phone app should be able to update everything together, less cables the better.
Aaaaargh shifter firmware upgrade. Right. Hang on while i go grab my 8 cables and my gamer pc in the garage to Update my wireless groupset. Jjjjjjeeeeeeeessssuuusssss
I have now just spent about $75 US on ordering the junction box, the cable and the stupid little plastic tool to plug the cable into the shifter.....
scratch that... $100 because you need 2 cables + the junction box for doing it through the rear dérailleur....
And now I have realised I have spent USD100 so I don't have to push a button 1 cm from another button to change up/down the front derailleur...
nice, this practically gives 105 a "hood button". just upgraded from mechanical to 105 di2 last month, bought an extra cable and the connector thing just in case for an update, thought i wouldn't be using those two items for years seeing how shimano rarely updated the firmware.
Do you like the update from mechanical?:)
@@tr4nnel752 yeah, i hated the front derailleur chain rub on the 105 r7020, i mean i know how to adjust it, but it will start to rub at the 7~8th cog and you'll need to use the trim function.
Now let’s have a (paid for) FW upgrade to make 11 speed work as 12.
@gplama
gidday, didnt need the wires to upgrade the levers 12speed Di2 to 4.2.0, just the e-tube app connected for teh firmware update.works sweet as.
cheers
Are your levers wired in or wireless?
@@gplama wired with rim breaks 😄
Gracias por la información, en las manetas de freno de llanta se puede hacer desde el móvil directamente, pues ya están cableadas a la batería.
My local Authorized Shimano Dealer & Bike shop surrendered on leavers FW upgrade 😀 Good I'm on SYNCHRONIZED SHIFT which basically removed a need for FD shifting (including SHIFT NEXT).
@Shane - do you have any information if the "Front Shift Next" will also be implemented to the DI2 11 Speed components? Cheers!
Finally! 🎉🙌 Been baffled why a binary function needed 2 triggers since forever, good bye false shifts!
So happy to see this from Shimano. What do you think are the chances they release this for 11 speed as well?
Unlikely. I’d like to see it on 11spd too.
I’d say… 5%. Unfortunately…
If they don't have it now, they're almost certain to never do it. There is no technical reason this couldn't have been added to 11sp, so the fact that they're releasing it only for 12sp means they're using it for marketing reasons.
I heard the update is due shortly after the fix for their power meter 🙃
So I run r8000 di2 and have some for some time. As soon as I got this, some years ago,I immediately used etube changed mine so the little buttons on the top of the hoods change the front mech and both shifters to change the rear mech (similar to etap). Is this not pretty much the same but better?
Listening to that how to update part really made me appreciate mechanical/cable operated XTR/XT and my older Ultegra.
Same. I'm on mechaniical Dura-Ace still. I've given this Di-2 thing a few years now and will probably get iit on a future bike when there are no more mechanical groupsets being sold new, but for right now everything is still cable actuated.
It made you appreciate that you have something you can't update with new features?
Yeah but you don’t get the option to switch what the buttons do 😅
@@kpizzle1985 I ride both mechanical and Di2 and I'm not saying that Di2 sucks but the shifter action/logic on mechanical is far superior to that of Di2. So you need these firmware update gimmicks to increase functionality, whereas mechanical is perfect as is.
@@lucasg2895 I have both too, but that's irrelevant. For someone to say more options, the ability to customise and being able to update something, is a bad thing just makes no sense.
Not sure if this problem is listed in all the comments somewhere, but when I configured Front Shift Next on my lever, I couldn't get into adjustment mode for my FD. Had to turn it off to get to adjustment mode. I'm on latest updates. Have you heard about this?
Looks great but I am new to this Di2 stuff, I have the 12 speed 105 Di2, I have used the E-tube app to update (on 24th May) the leavers batteries, front and rear mech so all parts up to date firmware but can no see the addition toggle of "Front Shift Next" on the E-tube app to configure paddles? am I missing something?
Yes, it cannot be done wirelessly. He shows this in the video, the wire that is needed and most of us don’t have
what is the software that i need to perform the update?
I don't care for this feature but I like to keep the firmware up to date. A wireless process would be preferable but it is not a massive chore to pop the seatpost out and run a cable to the shifter. Having to remember it only works with the upper port is slightly annoying though.
I think video updates are needed on how to update via cable through derailleur. Shimano manual is now showing this is through the rear derailleur and that you require two electric cables? The links seem older and only show through front derailleur.? Do you just plug in the cable from the rear derailleur into the junction box which is attached to the cable to the shifters?
LBS also saw that on the Shimano manual and proved it doesn't work. Bluetooth and power are routed through the RD.
When I’m suffering up a tough climb, it’s not uncommon for me hit my left lever to downshift when I’m already in the little ring. Sounds like this functionality would throw me into the big ring? I guess I’d have to train myself to pay more attention.
I believe that is a built in feature to make sure you don't do it again... :)
Do you lose the micro adjustment feature for the FD with this enabled? (ie pressing the same shift button again will adjust the trim)
Good point!
All Di2 front derailleurs trim automatically depending on the RD position. I don't think there was ever a manual trim feature like on mechanical Shimano
What about pressing two buttons simultaneously (both aero bar buttons) just like SRAM allows you to do it? That would be a real game changer. Shouldn’t be too hard to implement
I have Di2 Ultegra 12 speed .. that's where you lost me Lol
Why not have this on 11speed as well?
I assume this doesn't work for the TT groups?
I cannot see the front shift next option in the drop down menu. My app is updated. Do you need to be logged in or change an option somewhere?
All firmware is updated.
Exit the app and connect again. See if that resolves it. If not, it'll be one for Shimano support.
I just upgraded the 105 Di2 to the latest firmware using bluetooth and wired to the front shifters. I was able to assign a single button to toggle front derailleur and the 2nd button to toggle the pages in the S800 computer. Just assign the vacant button to Dfly ch1, then go to your computer setting to assign the action from the list.
Kinda makes me want Di2 on my roadie. Have it on my TT but this update is useless on that bike since it needs to run in Full Synchro.
It doesn't need to run in full synchro on a tt bike. I have the bar end shifters set to rear mech up/down and the base bar shifters front mech up/down. WIth this update you could add a sprint shifter and have essentially manual control from the aerobars. I prefer being in charge of the front deraiileur when I crest a hill, I've never gelled with synchro shift.
Can it be configured to auto compensate the rear as well?
It’ll work with Semi and Full synchronous shifting modes if you have either enabled, yes.
New to Di2 and shaking my head learning that some of the wireless system needs a wire to upgrade firmware. Did what I could with the app, but then took it to the LBS. They confirmed the Shimano instructions directing connection from the levers to the RD was wrong. Got the update installed through their laptop, and now the Di2 is dead. They'll work on sorting that out tomorrow.... Ride to the LBS, walk home. I thought I rode bikes to get away from tech BS.
These electronics require your bike shop mechanics to be tech savvy, not just mechanics.
@@gplama For sure, but not faulting the good folks at the LBS. Just disappointed with some peculiar hiccups in the pricey Shimano world.
I updated the battery and rear mech firmware on my di2 105 12-speed and the shift next option only appears on the right lever menu for button assignment. This makes no sense… anyone else experience this?
i guess i know what i’m doing this afternoon sigh
Can't think of a reason to do this on 105 Di2 yet. Certainly not worth the faff of updating the firmware.
since 105 di2 doesn't have hood buttons, you free up a button for extra use, like turning pages on your bike computer.
@@bikingchupei2447 Yeah I just don't think it's worth it. Perfectly happy pressing buttons in the rare time i need to touch the bike computer.
Please mention that this is only for disc brake groupsets. My 9250 rim brake groupset doesn’t have the ‘front shift next’ option.
They're listed on the Shimano E-Tube firmware site as being compatible with Front Shift Next. bike.shimano.com/en-US/e-tube/project/firmware.html
I’m a full time bike mechanic. Have the SM-PCE02. All my firmware updates are up to date. There’s no “front shift next” option on the drop down menu. I do have climbing switches installed too.
This will be one for Shimano support.
@@gplama going to try again now…. They say “refresh the browser”. Let’s see…
@@gplama no luck. i have climbing switches, the latest firmware....
Updated everything - No Front Shift Next appearing to choose for the button in the app! ST-8170. Any ideas?
Disconnect and reconnect to your Di2 after the firmware updates have completed.
Tried it several times - I can only select up, down, d-fly1-4 and rd-function. But thx for the reply - really appreciate your content.
@@filmbildung-brb is your FD actually still connected? (or have you disconnected that to update the shifters for example?)
@@BetterShiftingoh wow, that was it. FD wasn‘t connected properly after I used the junction to update the shifters. Thank you so much!!! Now it works.
What are the chances this is coming to 11spd di2?
0
Seeing as they can’t make money (new sales) off it, no chance
technically it shure would be easily possible, as the wahoo also knows in which position the fd is. But i guess Shimano doesn't want to give this functionality to us. :( Still wonder why there arent any hacks available for customization.
Yeah makes sense, but still have my fingers crossed 🤞
Pity they don't do this on the the 11 speed groupsets
Shimano is becoming the Apple of the bike industry, releasing updates only for the latest generation of groupsets, locking you in their ecosystem. Chinese electronic groupsets (L-twoo, Wheeltop and soon Magene) appear to be much more versatile, they support cassettes from 8 to 13 gears etc... Hopefully that will force Shimano to change their mindset.
Still no mechanical 12 speed Ultegra
I wish we could just set it up like SRAM. Both side (any button) shift the front. Left and Right to go up and down the cassette at the back.
You can do exactly that...
You can use left and right to shift the back. And use any other button to change the front. You can even do that without the update use the top button left and right to change the front. It’s not double button push like sram but almost
@@raunefare The double side push that's what I love about SRAM
@@DDai-qd8uk Really? Let me know how to setup so when I press L and R at the same time it shift the front. Thanks in advance.
Shimano screwed up the ability of their shifters to imitate the mechanical action instead when they brought out the di2 system they stupidly put 2 buttons (which they've made bigger yr by yr) behind the brake lever, this makes gear changing logically confusing in stressful situations, it was only later that shimano brought a patent for the mechanical action - whereas SRAM got their shifting from the off, logical simple and safe!
I'm 100% with you on the Di2 being less than ideal in stressful situations front.
Im on macOS, so…whelp…..
Having to upgrade the shifters firmware is insane. What were Shimano thinking? That makes zero sense.
Why would you not have to updated firmware to updated functionality?
@@peternewton2200I think you're missing the point. The point is the user wants to upgrade, but the process for shifter updates is either buy an expensive tool, buy a separate battery and cable or buy another cable then remove the current battery to enable a direct wired connection. The only other alternative is as stated find someone who has this and will do it for you, probably at a cost. This is a massive fail on Shimano's part as it's a lot of effort for what is in effect a 'nice to have' feature.
@@daveandrews9936 I agree the process for updating the shifter firmware is ridiculous (hence why my own shifter firmware is out of date) but the original comment was only on having to update the firmware and not the logistics of it.
@@peternewton2200 Why would I have to? Clicking a button is clicking a button. The logic is in the rear derailleur itself, so the action being taken upon clicking a button (telling the front derailleur to change gear) should not require a firmware update of the shifters. Upgrading the shifters is a pain in the ass on Shimano semi-wireless groupsets, I did it once before installing the groupset on the bike, now I don't want to remove my seatpost to access the battery and buy new cables etc...
@@sarahtoustra7127 the devs obviously believe to get optimal performance they required to update the firmware of the shifters. The rear derailleur controls the w system yes, but they may have wanted to put a limit on the speed that a signal would be repeat sent from button set to toggle the FD position. We are both just guessing but the bottom line is if you want the new functionality you need to update the firmware.
I believe this update is not compatible with the 105 DI2 because the hood doesn't have any hidden pattern Anywhere already updated my 105 DI2 for the sake of updating😂😂
Front Shift Next can be assigned to any button/switch. It isn’t limited to the hidden buttons.
you are missing the point.
So they just copied the Wheeltop system.....
