- Solving the riddle of why "Gear Usage Rate" never worked on my Shimano R8170 12 Speed Di2 groupset this week with some online research and testing of the latest update released for the BT-DN300. With the 4.1.0 update Gear Usage Rate now works in the E-Tube app, but it's not the only place you can track gear usage!

A very brave guy you are! Updating a shimano di2 device with a iPhone with a very low battery is like going down Alp d’Huez in the wet with carbon rim breaks 😜
Thanks for this hint! Upgraded my rig as well 👍
Thanks for checking that one Shane 👍 Any info from Garmin when they update their system to finally report Di2 gear usage in statistics?
You got me all excited, Shane, but I updated mine ages ago.
Didn’t know it’s possible to got this statistics on previous di2. Thanks for sharing this info about sram app way 😁
Same BT, FD,RD…
It always worked perfectly for me after an update at the beginning of 2023.

I have Shimano Di2 105 12 speed. In order to update the wireless shifters they have to be hardwired to the rear der. IOW they won’t do a firmware update wirelessly. Not the end of the world, but I did order a couple Di2 wires and a 4 port junction so I could connect for the update. Update went smooth via the iPhone app. Di2 105 is fantastic. Interestingly the Giant TCR came with 50/34 x 11-34 gearing. I found I never used the 34-34 gear so I switched out for a 11-30 cassette.
Nice one! It always showed data for me, but this screen was definitely broken for a lot of users. Good to see it's finally fixed!
In my testing, I also found that it doesn't show the gear usage data right after I stopped riding, but took a couple of minutes to update. A bit odd! :)
Awesome & Thanks :)
gotta get that Reddit in dark mode, Shane!
oh man, I was so hopeful when I saw the title. My 11 speed di2 Ultegra with wireless module worked on my Bolt when I bought it but after a firmware update last fall, it stopped recording or showing me the gear usage data. I've had a ticket open with Wahoo for over a year and no dice. Every firmware update I'm hopeful, but eventually let down when it still doesn't work.
Yep, that's a Wahoo thing. Not sure what's going on there.
Just imagine if garmin connect started adding this level of data...
Amazing that I can graph passing traffic (totals, speeds, etc) in Connect... but no bike gearing information. Strava also has this data from everyone who pairs their Di2/eTap/etc to their head unit.
Shimano is just as vague in saying general bug fixes as the RUclips app is on the updates with a message saying “We fixed the tubes that bring you videos - and some bugs too”
Hmmm...strange. I have a full Ultegra R8170 (including a front derailleur, haha) and I am certain I have had the log since before this latest update. Maybe it was not affecting *all* 12-speed Di2 configurations?
Wasn’t affecting me either. I was on 4.0.2 and could see gear usage. I’m running Dura-Ace 9200. After watching this video, I decided to check for updates, and the only update available was for the battery. The derailleurs were on 4.1.0, updated in March.
Hi Shane! Will you or DC Rainmaker be making a video on my whoosh?
Not on the cards for me at this point.
Hey, wondering if you know if this is why my wahoo wasn’t storing gear info either using the new 12 speed di2? I’ll update the software but my bike has been popped away for winter 😢
Hmmm... I suspect this is a Wahoo thing that'll need updating/fixing.
@@gplama Thanks, next years problem when the summer bike comes out of hibernation. Enjoy your summer :D
will you do a explanation about di2 connected to axs web?
I haven't covered it in depth yet.... For a quick overview - You'll need an account on axs.sram.com/ and to link it to Garmin Connect, Wahoo, and/or Hammerhead and you're done. It'll take data uploaded automatically to any of those services by your GPS/head unit.
What model of 4iiii power meter is on the drive side of that crankset?
9200…. maybe. 😉
@@gplama 😁
A Di2 power meter update just came in from Shimano!
And I’m debating spending $1250 to retest…
Well worth it to continue the Shimano power meter soap opera I’d say : ) Or you can use mine if you feel like going abroad (A’dam).
@@gplama Shimano would be wise to send you and DC Rainmaker review units if they think they have finally sorted things out. Lord knows they need a good crank review right about now...
@@MrKipperfish Shimano are a difficult company to deal with. They've made shitty meters in the past, which is what I've tested and reported. And I'm considered an enemy to them. They won't respond to my offers of testing/retesting and getting them the data. You'd think if they were confident with this 'fix', they'd get a unit over to me to test, right? Anyhow.... My door remains open and my testing remains objective. This is still 100% on them to sort their shit out.
So shimano is happy for some di2 data to be shared with sram but not other di2 data to be shared with sram (hammerhead).
Off topic, but just wondering, why did you switch from Zipp 808/454 NSW to other manufacturer's wheelset?
Magene sent the DB405 over for some feedback. Stay tuned for a video on them and the GP5000 TT tyres.
My OCD cannot cope with seeing your iPhone with a red battery indicator!!!
Does the gear usage only show stats for the last ride? Or is it cumulative?
Good question. I should have outlined that - It's cumulative.
@@gplama thank you Shane! I got this update a week or so ago… it’s cool. Useful. If you use S2 shifting, you could even plan your shift points around these gears. Even estimate which cogs are likely to wear out first.
Is there a way to see this data in the app without connecting the bike?
Not from within E-Tube. Your best option is to use a third party and upload ride data from a connected head unit/GPS.
Off topic (by a lot) but how are those Ican gravel wheels holding up?
After the bearing replacement, all good. I haven't put a lot of kms on them lately now I have a MTB (and another gravel bike).
Thanks for the quick reply. If you're thinking of moving them on, I'm interested.
Shane is there a way to put a gear limit while in the smallest chainring? Last gen di2 you couldn't shift into the 2 smallest cogs but with the current you can.
Not that I'm aware of.
Only on 12-speed Dura-Ace you can. Not 105 / Ultegra... unfortunately.
@@BetterShifting seriously? Ffs shimano...
@@vongdong10 Yeah... it would make more sense to have this default disabled for ultegra/105.... but instead they removed the option completely :(.
I use semi synchro shift for that. When I try to shift small-small or big-big, the front mech shifts automatically.
Anything in this update for GRX 817?
Check the E-Tube firmware list.
Wondering if I’ve made a mistake ordering Di2 for a new bike. Who needs all this complexity on a bike?
Once you've fished out a frayed gear cable and stabbed yourself a few times with the wire strands in the lever, you'll appreciate Di2.
You’ve not made a mistake. I switched to 12s Di2 (first ever electronic groupset) and I’m never, ever going back. It’s brilliant.
Is there any option in di2 to make a 12 speed system work with an 11 speed cassette. Seems it would be an easy issue in firmware.
No
@@gplama Thank you sir. Brief and to the point. Would be great if we see someone jailbreak the di2 firmware and add options that shimano has blocked. Would be great to have the option to run a 10 or 11 speed cassette on a 12 speed di2 in an emergency. Or maybe on a gravel wheelset that wont take a 12 speed cassette. I have too many 11 speed wheels to upgrade to a 12 speed.
Thank you again!
@@camd5348 I suspect Shimano legal wouldn't take a liking to anyone jailbreaking their equipment. They've been pathetic by recently blocking Hammerhead (now owned by SRAM) GPS units even pairing to their Di2 groupsets.
Only Di 2 that I have is GRX 11 sp 1 x on my gravel bike. I have not touched it done. Anything with it download it in any kind of apps from Shimano. Your attempted to change anything I’m just leaving it alone.
1x for me so I always had the log but Shimano should develop a more stable software platform.
Meanwhile Shimano powermeters are permanently bricked and can't be fixed in a firmware update.
from the performance of those, that might be just as well =)
i hate this groupset. front derailleur broke after 10k of usage. doesnt shift into big ring anymore. and the rear derailleur also ´snapped (!) just when i started pedalling. good that it was so cheap (not!). i'm more then happy going back to mechanical shifting again.
Shimanos app interface and eTube software have always been incredibly janky. SRAM AXS is lightyears ahead of them and functions well in all environments.
SRAM app is total crap, sorry but that's true (also missing single grear adjust, only possible for all - that's why most SRAM have scratch sound on specific gears). No one invest in decent app, because most of riders use headset (Garmin or Wahoo), so it's needed only for firmware updates, and gear adjust - and missing simple function: single gear adjust
Shimano chose to put their efforts where it counts - changing gears, front and back, ergonomics, excellent brakes….
huh, surprising. Shimano is one of the leading exponents of bug free, well-designed software....or am I thinking of someone else?
Their E-Tube for MacOS hasn't crashed once! Never mind it doesn't exist..... the fact remains it has never crashed! 😉
