This possibly the best video I’ve seen explaining synchro shifting. I installed di2 a few months ago and since figured it out but when I looked at the time a lot of the videos were really old and explaining in a very round about way. Thanks Shane!
Small tip on the accessibility front for the benefit of those of us in the Northern Hemisphere who are about to jump into winter riding with bulky gloves: Di2 lets you configure what each of the buttons do, so it's possible to set up a SRAM-style configuration where both right buttons are set to go down the cassette, and both left buttons are set to go up the cassette. Combine that with full-synchro and you'll never misshift in the winter. You can even program the hood buttons to change the front rings if you don't want to lose that option overall.
Thanks for confirmation. That was exactly my idea as my other bikes gears are sram. Run both on the left shifting down and both on the right shifting up but with semi-synchro and top buttons for FD.
I’ve had Di2 for almost 2 years and didn’t know how to change the mode or how to use it, now I am in S1 and loving it! And without having to use the complicated app! Thank you so much, great video!!
Worth mentioning that the system also prevents you cross-chaining, even in S1, so you can’t accidentally try a silly ratio like big front and big rear at the same time. 👍
The main benefit of di2 is that cross chaining is trimmed better to provide that perfect chainline even on cross chain. So I don’t understand how s2 mode really benefits other than being so lazy to bother with the front chainring shift and only think about rear cog shifting. For me I like manual, because if I were to switch chain rings from small to large, I want the larger gear ratio selected, not the same gear ratio
@@wallacepei4529cross chaining is still an issue and can destroy components and lead to less efficiency and power too. Synchronous system is perfect to prevent this. It also leads to less disruptions in cadence. If a hill is approaching you have plenty of time to shift to correct gear. I can’t think of any down sides to the synchronous system.
Thanks for a great explanation of sync shift. Rather embarrassed to say I’ve had Di2 for years & never used the function. I’m now riding S1 & I’m converted 👍
I was riding DI2 for half a year and I didn’t know about synchro shifting so I tried this week. It is great, wish I knew about it before. I use full synchro, this is perfect.
Full synchro with the climbing shifter. It’s the only way I ride it’s just like a lazy automatic car, funny I drive one of them to. Brilliant Vlog Shane. There’s not enough info on Di2 thankfully we have you👍
Maybe, but how often do you install a groupset? And also, I can swap/upgrade parts of my di2 bikes as I go. Ie, I have 6870 shifters and 6770 front and rear derailleurs, di2 for less than $350. 9150 shifters on my other bike with mostly dura ace 9150 stuff except 9050 RD, saved me heaps on the used market, less than $1000 all up. Can swap parts to my cheaper di2 build as I upgrade my more expensive di2 build. Can't do that with Sram Red etap and AXS.
@@MrBJPitt It's not just the installation. The configuration is much more simple too. I don't doubt di2 is fantastic, but for pure simplicity, eTap is cool. And Force / Red Parts are fully cross compatible.
Hi Shane ! As it always seems to be the case with you, another absolutely first rate review. Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated Sir. Oh, and best regards from me in Ohio.
I use full synchro when in my clip on aerobars. I have one aerobar DI2 switch there. I connect it to the junction box when I clip the aerobars on. No need to get to the hoods for shifting :)
I’ve tried the same settings on SRAM red AXS. The “compensating mode” (semi synchro in Shimano speak) is great and I use it all the time. The sequential shifting (full synchro in Shimano speak) is absolute rubbish, particularly when out of the saddle and trying to put the power down on a short sharp hill.
Thank you for hte video, especially the installation/retrofitting on an older bike. I am now confident that I am unable to do this on my own and also that it's quite laborious for a competent mechanic so the best approach would be to buy a bicycle with Di2 already installed ;)
Thanks, I was trying to figure out why the red light came on when I tested the battery. It just started when I got it back from the shop recently. They must have updated the firmware.
Both of these modes are great for most of the time, but not all. Sometimes if im shifting into the little ring as i hit the bottom of the climb and the grade kicks up i only compensate with one shift instead of 2 like syncro. There are also wierd things like the certain gears that people shift into before lights to get a good start that might get a bit confusing with syncro
Made it halfway through until my wife told me to switch "that bald man - oooh is that Lama?" off.. but wanted to say you need a display AND an up to date battery/mount if you want synchro on mtb :)
(and the MTB displays beep the shift before a synchro shift happens, which is pretty nice). Note that S1 and S2 are semi / full by default, but a user can change this.. and it's a lot easier to change this in the new mobile app - so there will be users where S1 is full synchro and S2 is semi-synchro.. or both S1 and S2 full synchro.. or any other combination :)
Di2 looks so good I missed out on a great deal last year in the sales within my budget and wish I had got it , now it’s beyond my wallet and I’m regretting it since , gonna have to play the waiting game for another sales
Shane Miller - GPLama yes thanks I’ll keep looking , I know upgrades and Di2 won’t turn me into a pro but anything that makes the riding experience that much better is worth trying 👍🏼
S1 and S2 modes are handy when you ride outdoors but when you do indoor rides i found M mode better. Maybe you can use to it over time but i felt S1 and S2 mode bit of uncomfortable indoor rides.
I was screwing around trying to soft ware up date and accidentally put it in s 1 mode , at first thought I would try to get it back into manual mode but tried riding it in s 1 and think I will leave it there for awhile kinda like it.
If using "full syncro mode" only 2 buttons are in use. Can I select whichs buttons are used? And is there a use for the two other buttons ? Is it possible to use 2 buttons for up/down in "full syncro" and the two others to make a manual front derailleur change?
I’m upgrading very soon to Di2 (hurry up with the parts Shimano!) and I’m still trying to work out whether to go semi or full synchro. I love the idea of full synchro and it would mean you could free up more buttons to do other things (controlling lights, head unit, etc). Semi synchro is how I ride my mechanical bike so that’s also appealing. If I set the left and right Y buttons to shift up and down the cassette, could I configure the left and right X buttons to change screens on my Wahoo?
I tried full synchro, but didn’t like the loss of control. Using semi-synchro now, but I don’t quite have it tuned properly yet. It is good though not to have to shift the rear mech in advance of, or immediately after, shifting between big and small cogs.
Dear Shane, I have an odd shifting setup. I have a 46/30 11/40 using the current Ultegra and a Wolftooth extender. Don't judge, I am an old portly person who still wants to climb. Would DI2 make my shifts to the larger cogs easier? Cheers Mark
I used both S2 and S3 extensively, and finally just went back to S1 and left it there. My conclusion is that they would be great for a TT/Tri Race, or a flat hammer session, but if there are any climbs on my route, I don't want the bike making shifting decisions for me. And as for the 2 gear compensation in S1, some situations only call for a single gear compensation, and some might call for three (rare). S1 (M) is the best option for me...
I've found a slightly annoying quirk with semi-synchro. When you use a laptop, you can specify 2 or 3 cogs as the compensation shift at the back. In the Android app (using Bluetooth) you can only specify a 2 cog shift. I'm not sure that the Bluetooth module is worth the expense (especially as I am a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt user).
Another (so very useful) and great video Shane! You rock! I know you probably already asked this of Wahoo - but are they planning on offering the "mode status" change capability on the Wahoo Elemnt Roam? Thought if anyone would know it would be you.
Hiya Shane, hope you had a merry Christmas. I’ve just got a wahoo Kickr bike and seen there’s a shimano di2 sycnchro mode. I was going to choose the SRAM eTap after seeing your shifting video for the Kickr but now I’ve looked at synchro mode and reading peoples comments I’m swaying towards that now. Any recommendations? I’ve just made the jump from exercise bike to this beauty but I’m yet to ride it
Thanks Shane! I have just had a bike fitted with Campagnolo Super Record EPS 12 and am only just beginning to play around in the settings. Do you know if there is an equivalent functionality?
One item would be great is to explain how to activate the system to allow the chain to go into smallest cog when in small ring. I believe there is a default setting keeping it from doing so. I never bothered as seems to avoid me from running on that combination.
I believe what I’m trying to say is getting the chain to go into one of the last 2-3 smallest cog in small ring. The sizes are set up and selected. I believe there is a check box to uncheck allowing this to work. Just can’t recall where I saw it. PC software or phone app.
Ah thanks. Missed your subtle hint ;-). Cool it can be changed with the app. Like the concept but there’s times I prefer to drop to the last cog for wheel removal and cleaning.
I’m using 8050 group set, I can’t get into the 10/11 whilst on my little ring at the front, not that I would choose to use these gears however; when I want to remove my rear wheel not being able to engage these gears makes it more difficult to get the wheel out. Any ideas? Cheers.
Thanks for all the TCR+di2 videos! I've done an upgrade with di2 (9170) but double-clicking the junction box button doesn't work. Any idea? For now, I have no PC connection or wireless module installed. Battery checking shows it is set as MANUAL mode and I can't change to S1 or S2. :(
Love the idea of it but as somebody that rides with a fast paced group with lots of punchy climbs I find that the gearing on S2 is too slow when it does a double shift up a climb and I basically pause on the bike waiting for the gear change.
Yes s2 did not look appealing at all. The way I ride is in the big chain ring mostly. So I have it 53t on front. 11-28t on back, 11 speed. As controversial as this may be, I will run all 11 gears on back I don’t care about cross chain. I could see a super simple addition of a 12th gear. Say drop into 39t front to 28t back for some super steep hill. But I also don’t see the issue with just switching to that in manual mode.
No puedo lograr modo semiautomático o automático en mi shimano ultegra di2, presionó dos veces el botón y no hace nada. Solo se queda encendida la luz roja, ayudaaaa
How the eff do you turn semi synchro off! It’s pissing me off. Unfortunately Di2 can’t tell how big the climb is in front of me. I like to drop down into the small ring and then make my way up the rear cog as I climb. With semi synchro when I change into the small ring it makes two shifts down which makes the start of the climb harder.
What kind of contraption is that, Shane?! Aldhu cranks (24mm?) some weird spider-mount power meter and Dura-Ace chainrings?! What is this thing? Tell me more!
The biggest I can see is 11-30 on my RD-R8050-SS, but that's because that's all it supports (officially). The RD-R8050-GS goes to 34 and supports synchro according to the Shimano website.
Power meter calibration and Di2 mode are unrelated. Maybe your 520 has set the power meter sensor to "prompt to calibrate" under the power sensor settings?
Yeah strange one , prompt to calibrate is turned off. I'll go back to standard setting (M) and see if that makes a difference. Do like the S1 mode @@gplama
@@gplama oh, didn’t realize they are power meter pedals. 🙈 They spin quite a lot (easily). If they would be standard pedals, I would say the grease is ready to replacement (unless you run super thin lube for Hour Record or so). But since they’re power meter pedals, then spinning like that is maybe perfectly normal. Sorry, my bad. Have no experience with power meter pedals...yet. Thanks for useful Di2 series!
Di 2 11 speed on the mtb. Do you know of a way to hack it so it can be converted to 12 speed. Ive measure the distance on the 12 speed cassette and there is enough travel distance in the Di2 xt rear derailuer however the software is designed only to move through eleven cogs. thanks.

Yeah, Oct 13 they say.. let's hope it's right. 6870 and 9050 do have synchro shift with the new battery, but their FD limit the flexibility in setting it up (software limitation...).
Yes BUT No if you also have a road Front Derailleur. The software won’t let you set it up. So only works if you have a x1 setup like in a gravel bike. As gravel bikes now have a drop bar handlebar and those shifters are essential.
Yeah, you can use about any shifter with any derailleurs. However, all derailleurs MUST be 10 speed or all 11 speed. Also, all installed derailleurs must be from the same category. "Mtb" is a category and "road/grx" is another.
Update: It doesn't appear to compensate on the back when in S2 and changing the front ring. I'll need to test it a little more to get my head around it.
I love my di2 for crisp shifting but I find the easiest setup is just shift the back. I may not feel that way if I move to the mountains but where I live it’s very rare to need the small chain ring
Can a Wahoo head unit give that "next shift is a chainring shift" warning too. I love that on my Garmin in S2 mode. And that is one of the reasons I haven't tried a Wahoo yet. I could never find any info on that.
Plug it in to the computer with our charging cable and make sure you have these 2 components for ANT+/Bluetooth you ll need to make sure the battery is the BT-DN110 and then the Dongle is the SM-EWWU111- this list looks like this in the software - fernandoj.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/etube.jpg (this is the older software version but will be simlair) the etube software just google for that and download from Shimano website
@@m4ttfletcher when I connected to the computer, the SM-EWWU111 is not detected... I dont see the small unit outside either, do they come installed from factory? That's the d-fly unit if im not mistaken
@Juan Tobon , if you dont detect it its not there. Its also not in the outside. Search in youtube for “Di2 shane miller” set search filters to upload date and watch last 4 videos. Beginning with the oldest video, you will find all your answers in the videos.
If you have Di2 you have a junction A somewhere. It’s also the charge port. I have a number of videos up on Di2 that might answer your questions. If not, hit up Shimano.
There are certain things in the cycling sphere that make no sense to me, as someone who has owned both compact and standard cranks - they are the same except compacts limit your ability to put out power on steep descents, otherwise your shifting choice determines level of effort so.... compact cranks are pointless. Shifting... if you can vary your cadence you can handle a wide range of gear choices....getting 20 gear choices is pointless. Crisp shifting helps, tiny incremental shifting.... nope. Cross chaining. I have one 3 chainring bike where cross chasing is an issue. On all my other bikes I can use any combination I want with no exception and no problems.
Thanks but with over 1000 videos up on all different topics, there's always going to be something people don't like. Take it or leave it, no stress from me. I'll keep chipping away here.

What battery are you using? And it's best to get a PC link to update the firmware on all components (if required).
hi, will a di2 10 speed rear derailleur work on a 11 speed cassette if the shifters are changed to 11 speed ones? thanks heaps !
I'm going with no. The E-Tube Compatibility chart is a good reference to confirm this.
Does the Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 Disc R9170 model will do all these tricks (Full Synchro Road Shifting)?
Yes
Gracias!
so what I have been doing all these years is S1 but manually lolx
Same, but on downtube shifters :D
I’m on M mode. But why my chain does not go or shift all the way to 11 tooth rear cassette when my chain is on the smallest ring in the front?
By design. One for Shimano if you need to know the reasoning.
No puedo lograr modo semiautomático o automático en mi shimano ultegra di2, presionó dos veces el botón y no hace nada. Solo se queda encendida la luz roja, ayudaaaa
You'll need to have updated firmware and the Di2 battery that supports these modes.
Double click the junction A button to cycle modes.
What kind of contraption is that, Shane?! Aldhu cranks (24mm?) some weird spider-mount power meter and Dura-Ace chainrings?! What is this thing? Tell me more!
That's a Sigeyi Rotor compatible 24-4-110 power meter spider.
Hi Shane - I have heard it doesn't work with 11-34 (maybe 11-32 as well?). Any idea how to get it to work with those cassettes?
The biggest I can see is 11-30 on my RD-R8050-SS, but that's because that's all it supports (officially). The RD-R8050-GS goes to 34 and supports synchro according to the Shimano website.
@@gplama Thanks Shane!
How do I find out which battery model I need?
First you need to find out what battery model you have. Then look for the updated/newer version if needed.
how to you cycle between manual, semi and full synchro if you only have junction A box: RS910
Double click the button.
Ive had to calibrate power on edge 520 start of every ride after switching to S1 mode on head unit. Any idea why ? Thanks
Do like the S1 mode
@@gplama
Not sure Wahoo gives the option to change shift modes. Pretty sure I can only do that via etube.
Double clicking the button on the Junction-A will cycle through shift modes. M->S1->S2 and back to M.
@@gplama I don’t have one of those with R8100. Is there a multi-paddle click way to do it. Maybe I need to RTFM.
Great video! Just one thing - it looks like your pedals need re-greasing. ;)
They're the Favero Assioma with sealed bearings. They're in really good condition. What issue are you seeing with them?
@@gplama oh, didn’t realize they are power meter pedals. 🙈 They spin quite a lot (easily). If they would be standard pedals, I would say the grease is ready to replacement (unless you run super thin lube for Hour Record or so). But since they’re power meter pedals, then spinning like that is maybe perfectly normal. Sorry, my bad. Have no experience with power meter pedals...yet. Thanks for useful Di2 series!
Di 2 11 speed on the mtb. Do you know of a way to hack it so it can be converted to 12 speed. Ive measure the distance on the 12 speed cassette and there is enough travel distance in the Di2 xt rear derailuer however the software is designed only to move through eleven cogs. thanks.
MTB is outside my lane at the moment sorry. Not something I have access to.
I do not like the synch modes. I prefer to have full control, specially when electronic shifting is so smooth and precise. Stick to manual mode if you are an experience rider.
👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Am I right in assuming that pros use S1?
I have no idea to be honest.
The etube software is very 2009. Not sure if the older groups like 9070 or 6850 have many options even with the newer battery.
The updated Windows version is due in a week or two. The new mobile app is pretty neat.
@@gplama I've.been waiting on the update and i must get that Bluetooth module as my hood buttons are idle and the igpsport has di2 connectivity. activity
Yeah, Oct 13 they say.. let's hope it's right.
6870 and 9050 do have synchro shift with the new battery, but their FD limit the flexibility in setting it up (software limitation...).
Anyone know how to go back to manual mode shifting? I dont see a clear path on the mobile app to do so
Double press the junction A button to switch modes from M -> S1 -> S1 (and back to M again).
Could I combine a XTR Di back derailleur with Dura Ace Di shifters?
I believe that’ll work. Check the ETube Compatibility Chart on the Shimano website to be sure.
I'm having difficulty setting up synchro Shift mode on my 1x bike with di2, pls help 😥
🎣
The best synchro shifters, my fingers with bar end shifters... no battery needed..😉
It's almost like comments similar to yours don't come up every-single-time electronic groupsets are discussed...
Hmmmmmm, it may be because you have a microphone pointed at the gears, but your DI2 sounds really clunky compared to mine. Is your chain ok?
Slamming through some of those gears with not a lot of tension on the chain on the stand does that. Chain is fine (50km use).
Shane Miller - GPLama Thanks, I’ve not listened to my gears on a stand, and obviously my chain is used to about 1500 watts continuous power 😂🤣😂
In S2 mode, when you do a front chainring shift, does it do the compensation shifting? You did not show this.
Update: It doesn't appear to compensate on the back when in S2 and changing the front ring. I'll need to test it a little more to get my head around it.
@@gplama yeah, it doesn't . I would like it to though.
(Assuming the S2 were talking about here is set to full synchro.:))
Not at this point in time.
The 3 Trolls that disliked this video should be electricuted.
How do I know if my bike has a wireless module installed, I cant seem to get it paired with my wahoo elemnt. Bike is a 2020 trek madone di2
Thanks guys
Juan Tobon for the wu111 instalation search youtube for shimano wireless module installation
I don't have a "junction". Just tell us what is needed to make changes to the system. Video leaves me with more questions than answers.
Whats new ?
It exists for many years.
0:16 he said that
I explain this in the intro. It's the literally the first few words I say. 🤷🏻♂️
No thanks
Yawn
Big night?
@@gplama Pretty much. Sometime you are awesome. This was , um , less inspiring, at least for those of us who don't dream in code.
Thanks but with over 1000 videos up on all different topics, there's always going to be something people don't like. Take it or leave it, no stress from me. I'll keep chipping away here.
