Destroying Shimano Di2 Groupset Shifting with a PHONE // Di2 Firmware Recovery

  • While electronic groupsets have proven to be very robust in the field, they're not immune to failures or issues on the more technical side of things. In this video I brick/destroy the Shimano Ultegra Di2 RD-8050 rear derailleur with nothing more than the Shimano E-Tube app.... and I go about restoring it back to working condition.
    Note: Firmware restoration of individual components on non-working Di2 system will require the use of the PC Linkage Device (SM-PCE1 or SM-PCE2).

    Just a note for those who have bricked their wireless unit: you may need to disconnect your battery for a minute before being able to reflash the firmware from your PC. Otherwise, you will experience an endless loop of failed connections.

  • @NathanLipkeEvilN8
    @NathanLipkeEvilN8 3 года назад +4

    You haven’t lived until you crashes the EW-WU111 upgrade.
    For reference you can restore with your phone.
    1. Pull your seat post and disconnect the battery.
    2. Disconnect the EW-WU111
    3. Plug the EW-WU111 into the battery. You may need to disconnect a cable from a shifter to do this.
    It will reset to some base version and will allow you to re upgrade your firmware.

Ended up disconnecting all cables, forcing the iPhone to forget the BLE connection with the wireless unit, letting things rest for several minutes, plugging the battery into the wireless unit directly and letting things rest for a few minutes, and then plugging everything back together and reconnecting with the app. Once reconnected, the app failed to restore the firmware a few times and I had to repeat the process.

    So last night I bricked my entire Ultegra Di2 system when fitting the Blue Tooth Wireless EW-WU111 mobile unit. I had taken all precautions, had the phone close to the unit on a stand so I wouldn't move it, closed down all other apps on the phone, but overlooked one. more. step. and that was to turn on 'Do Not Disturb' on the phone. Sure enough, half way through the firmware update on the WU111, a notification from my Amazon app popped up saying a delivery was on the way and sure enough, that was enough for it to interrupt the update and my whole Ultegra Di2 shifting was left dead in the water. Nada. So my only course of action was to use the Di2 Charger - SM-BCR2 - to connect to a PC and update everything via the E-Tube laptop/desktop app. The only problem is I don't have a PC and am only on a mac, which Shimano, god knows why, do not provide a Mac version for, only the flaky iPhone and iPad app which were going to be of no use to me to whatsoever to restore the Di2 system. My workaround was to virtually install windows 10 on my mac using VirtualBox, installing windows 10 and downloading the E-Tube app. I believe this is a route you went down in another video you posted, except you didn't go into any real detail about how to configure VirtyalBox with Windows 10 to achieve this. I found another video that did: ruclips.net/video/huIKDwdR5vw/видео.html It totally worked and I was able to reboot my Di2 system and do all the necessary component firmware updates. As an FYI the E-Tube V.4 app will only work on this set up, not the latest v.5 version.This totally saved my butt, and an extremely long (and expensive) journey to a bike shop that was capable of doing this for me. Many thanks for all your hard work and effort in putting these vids together, they are extremely useful.

      Did you say SRAM was old and almost irrelevant when Shimano launched Di2 years before SRAM ? this is typical ebb and flow of the market, Shimano will have 12 speed soon enough, I've been through 8, 9, 10, 11 and now 12, personally I've had enough of all the incompatibility these upgrades bring, and it is even worse with DISC thrown in the mix, I have both AXS and Di2, neither is perfect and neither is better than the other, its personal choice, for example, I prefer the wires, it is a one-off job installing it and the battery lasts 3 times longer between charges, it's less hassle after installation, but as I said, it is a personal preference and I totally understand why some would prefer wireless as it is a hassle during installation.
