It’s that lady time of the month and I’ve been so incredibly nauseous that my appetite has suffered tremendously these last three days. I woke up craving cinnamon rolls this morning so I followed your recipe and prepared that. And while they were still baking I got a craving for soft pretzels. And as I swallowed my last bite of cinnamon roll, I was already preparing to bake some wheat bread (another recipe of yours I saw yesterday) for French toast (which might need a few days since it tastes better with older bread). By the looks of it, I’m going to finish an entire bag of flour in one day.

I gave this recipe a try having tried several others. This is the only recipe that I will take the time to write a comment upon. Why? Because its simply fabulous. So far, it's the ONLY recipe that produces soft pretzels both inside and out. Perhaps even softer than Auntie Annie's LOL! perfect colour and texture (Shame I cannot upload pics on here). Well done Laura, sterling effort for all of us mere wannabies!! Thank you.

brian riback ~ If you tried to activate the yeast in just salt and water you will not get real good results. The sugar, salt and water work because it is only used to activate them for 5 min and then the flour and butter are added, it dilutes the salt to the point it wont affect the yeast...

Use a thermometer to measure the water. It should be 110-120 degrees. Also, don't use salt. Salt kills the yeast. And don't forget to stir the sugar, warm water and yeast together, cover the bowl with a towel, and let sit for 5 minutes.

    Hare Krishna !
Ostensibly your dishes are delectable. BUT Ms Laura, there are over a million viewers in this world, who do NOT eat the following:- meat, fish, eggs, rennet products, alcohol, mushrooms, chocolate, onion, garlic, masoor (lentil), tea, coffee, sodas etc. Won't you PL make time for us too ,and make recipes which suit us? We are the "Hare Krishna people " from ISKCON. We are Krishna devotees- aka "Vaishnavas". We always make our dishes at home (with love and devotion infused, always). Then food is first offered to Krishna (so no tasting is permitted before God has partaken it). Now it becomes SOUL FOOD (aka prasadam), i.e. good for our body and our soul too !! We love parties (our weekly spiritual congregations, where Krishna is the center of everything.). So, we often cook for 15-50 people for such congregations- "kirtans".
    Hare Krishna !

@Asha Yejide The temperature of the water doesn't really matter, and theres no need to go through the trouble of boiling water. Just use slightly warm tap water, and you'll be fine.
Modern yeasts don't even need to be activated, they will reproduce just fine in the dough, but its become a part of pretty much every yeast dough recipe at this point, so people just continue to do it.

Making any type of bread has always been a mystery for me. However, I made these and they turned out exactly like Laura's. We ate them up. Thanks for posting this, Mrs. Vitale. :D

I made these the other day with pepperoni and cheese and they came out PERFECT! They were gone within a few minutes lol. I don't have a kitchen aid so I had to mix and knead the dough by hand which took about 15-20 minutes.

ROTFLMFAO! Salt + Sugar then yeast? LOL. Sugar feeds yeast. What kills it? Salt. It wont rise with the salt until the yeast has had 2-3 minutes with water and sugar.

Maybe I'll use this recipe to make Pretzel Buns for Pretzel Melt sandwiches.
Me and my girlfriend are going to my Dads to wash clothes, perhaps we will make these while we're waiting on them to wash and dry.

Hi Laura, I just want to say... the baking soda can be substituted with any other food safe "base" (the pH kind of base.) Food grade lye actually works better than baking soda.

Butter is not unhealthy don't worry it is the amount you eat not the thing - and you need it to make this yummy soft white dough, otherwise you'll end up with a white bread flavour, not a pretzel flavour

Mine turned out almost unedibly chewy tough on the next day. They were ONLY really good when freshly baked. Please suggest if I did something wrong.

Great video. Ordered a KitchenAid and it's being delivered tomorrow. Will surely make these pretzels. Can you freeze them and then let them thaw naturally?

Laura, can you please make pretzel rolls? Costco sells those pretzel rolls that I am addicted to but I don't want to buy a big bag that I will end up eating a lot. I just want to be able to make a few at a time for our family dinner. Thanks.

First recipe I tried with my new Kitchenaid mixer. I put in 4.5 c of flour and the dough was so tough that it stopped my mixer when it overheated. Uggh. What did I do wrong?

Actually, if the recipe were in the Show More section, all the viewer has to do is highlight and then print the page. That would be much easier than leaving the video to go to the website to search for the recipe, copy it, and then return to the video. I know that I would definitely appreciate the recipe on THIS page.

Laura, why did u say u were never good at science? I thought cooking must also involve science just like how art is involved in cooking. when baby mia grows a little bit bigger, I gotta tell her on you.

Hi Laura, it's a great recip !! But I don't know why they stick to the parchment paper which is not easy to remove it after cooking . Could you give a a tip for that issue?

Who is baking them in 2020? Didn't bake them in a while. Thought of them during our quarantine lockdown 😉
