For me personally, overpreparation or even just slightly more than minimal interview preparation increases my anxiety during an upcoming interview 10-fold. I don't always get a job with little interviewing preparation, nor will I always avoid all interviewing anxiety, but I am consistently less anxious and more confident on job interviews when I don't do more than bare minimum preparation. It's also way easier for me to problem solve and think on the fly in an authentic manner answering job interview questions that I may not have been prepared for ahead of time.
This also has the benefit of helping with negative emotions after getting rejected from an interview. I'll be less likely to feel as bitter about a rejection if less time was wasted in the job's process.

Just finished my 3rd round of interviews for my dream job. My 1st was with the recruiter. It went well. 2nd with the manager, it went amazing. Supposed to be 30 minutes ended up being an entire hour. She said she will move my file to the director and I will hear from them. Well, I did get the 3rd interview. It went well I thought. But ended exactly at 30 minutes which is the scheduled time. She did say she has few more internet but will have the recruiter get back to me I after she finishes them and meet with the team. I’m soooo nervous and anxious. I know for a fact the manager loved me and we bonded real well. The director was very nice and I thought we had a good interview.
So. I’m waiting a week. And Monday I’ll send a follow up email. Thoughts on 3rd interview likelihood of getting the job. Also how many people usually make it to the 3rd round of interviews? This is a major company by the way.

At the end of the interview they asked me do you have any questions, I asked them ; "are you still going to be in touch with me even if I did not make it?" they said we will send an email. 15 people were interviewed, I got the call the next day to be told I got the job. As time goes by working with one of the interviewers, I asked her why they had to choose me out of 15 people and she said , they were tired on that day, and I was smiling, speaking fluently and very confident, and they were impressed. What kills me is I'm generally a poor interview. I get nervous and can't think on my feet when I'm nervous. My strength is that I can see patterns in systems and opportunities to improve systems (compared to almost everyone else I work with) and I can use that to sell myself (with examples) but for along time my nervous energy crippled me and there a lot of other people who are just poor interviews and some people are just good BSers who will suck at the job but can sell themselves.

The universe decided to help me out with that and take my mind completely off the fact that the new company has not gotten back to me. I got home last night after a miserable 12 hour day, opened the garage door, and found my hot water tank decided to blow up during the day and 50 gallons of water was on the floor. Then I had to call the fire department to make sure I wasn’t in any danger. A big fire truck came with lights and sirens blaring. All my neighbors were looking out their windows. So much drama. 🙄 Today I had to call out from my miserable job while I wait for the delivery and installation of a new water heater. This avoids disappointment if expectations aren't reached, and if you do get the job, all the better.
Keep looking and don't put your eggs into one basket.
Until you hear you have the job, assume that you don't. Either you will be less disappointed, because your expectations are low, or you get it, and it boosts your confidence.

I got the "We have other candidates" once, and I actually think that this was the most respectful decline I ever had. That was for a small part time job in a small hardware store as a university student. The boss and I got along pretty well, and he eventually was like “you know, I’m looking for someone to support the team a bit when we’re low on staff, and you never did that kind of work before, so I would rather hire one of the other candidates that doesn’t need training since training you would kind of defeat the purpose of why we’re trying to hire someone. So, I like you man, but I think we won’t hire you”. I think that’s the proper way of declining someone. Respectful, honest, and based on an understandable, rational business decision. Not like the usual e-mail that just tells you “no” with some business phrases; telling you essentially nothing about why you’re not getting this job.

  • @MikeTXBC

How about interviewers who lie to you? At the end of every interview, I always ask them, "Will I hear back from you even if I don't get the job?" Every single time the interviewer has said "Yes" or something similar to confirm that they will. Sounds good, right? Well, it never happens. I'm not exaggerating. I've asked this question every time, and every time they said YES, and every time they don't follow through. Nowadays it's easier than EVER before to shoot off a quick email telling me "Sorry, we chose someone else." Yet these hiring managers are too lazy or inconsiderate to even perform that small bit of courtesy.
I've interviewed with literally hundreds of companies (big, medium, and small) and out of those interviews, I can't recall a single instance of a hiring manager actually keeping to their word and sending me that email.
Look, I'm not angry that I didn't get the job. I'm angry about them knowingly lying to my face. If they have no intention of getting back to anyone except the individual they hire, that's fine, but tell me that. Just say something along the lines of, "You'll hear from us if you get hired." Basically, all I want is for people to keep to their word and follow through on what they say they'll do. I'm sure every company who's interviewed me expects that much out of me, so why is it asking too much to expect the same out of hiring managers themselves?

Crushing. My interview today did only last roughly 25 minutes with all the tell tale signs that you pointed out. The one you didn’t point out was that of a Teams Meetings interview setting. My experiences today were as follow:
    1) The interviewers didn’t show their faces while I was clearly already onscreen at the beginning of the interview.
    2) The HR rep only showed up halfway through the interview. He wasn’t on focus camerawise the majority of the time. I could only see his back side and the back rest of his chair. He only faced the camera when we were about to part ways.
    3) There was also the distracting noise of crumpling paper in the background while I was answering their questions. I had to stop a couple of times just to ask them if they could hear me just fine. I felt that they were not even properly listening to me.
All these factors combined made me feel that we just wasted each other’s time.
I don’t mind them not showing their faces, but I think there should have been foreword that that’s what they were going to do prior to the interview. And at the same time, I think I should have been given that option as well as, even if it’s just for courtesy.
Anyway, I tried hard to disguise my discomfort, but I know I was distracted the entire time.
What are your thoughts on video conference types of interviews? I think there should be agreed upon proper decorum for Teams scenarios.

I thought I absolutely nailed it. I'd felt so relaxed and all the right answers just came to me, all the examples to "tell me about a time when" questions too just swam into my head. And yet... turns out the feedback I got today from the recruiter who did the first interview with me last week was (he spoke to the people that interviewed me yesterday) that I was too long-winded, it took me too long to answer the first question, and it didn't sound like it was my forever job. I literally said I would want to spend the rest of my working career (30 years) in one place. I really don't get it. None of the signs you spoke about were there. The manager who’s team is hiring told me their HR is not the fastest so to expect something over the next few weeks (they still had other candidates to interview). He did tell me that I can email him for a follow up and he’ll call me either way. That gave me the impression that they need to finish interviews before actually telling someone they got the job. During the interview some managers asked me questions after my answers but some didn’t. Only one person had their video on, but the guy who would be my boss turned his on at the very end when they finished the interview portion(Good sign I think?) Those who love you or very interested in hiring you would NOT hesitate to tell you that you would be a good fit. Those that give wishy-washy answers are not going to hire you. Given you need to be quite confident to ask this question, but that's what makes you stand out from all the other candidates. To show you are a Go-Getter. This probably won't be seen, but here goes.
I've had interviews last up to an hour, three times in 2016, (I've had others because I've been employed since this time). Neither one hired me.
One saw that I owned a boat manufacturing shop for 3 years, before I went out of business, and suddenly he was asking about my boats, my shop, how many employees I had, and his fishing stories. I didn't get called back.
The second, was an interview that went really well, he was talking about putting me on the crew. He was happy to hear me ask about their culture, but then he asked what kind of hobbies I am in too. When I spoke about an idea, related to paintball, he was all in to hear about my plans. He asked several questions, about things I brought up during that conversation, and even said he could use a guy with my inventive mind. He never called back.
The third, was an interview that lasted a long time, because he wanted to know what other jobs I did, as far back as I was able to work for a wage. I was 47 at the time, so I had a fairly long list of jobs, to which he compared himself to me. Saying that if I were to look at his resume, it'd have 2 employers. The one before this job, for 27 years, and 2 years at the one he's interviewing me for now. I countered that not everyone has the same opportunities, and challenges in life, like he did. And of course, I did not hear back from him. This one is fairly obvious. The up side? That place went bankrupt 3 years later. I love you Karma. :)

@@BenTalksTalent Thanks Ben. While I am still employed, my employer has made a lot of bad decisions of late, thus sales and production has dropped like a rock. Sadly, I am very well versed on getting jobs with employers who don't last past 6 years, before they permanently shut the doors. Call it a gift. lol So back in February, everybody was noticing the orders were slowing way down, as in, 2021, about a billion and a half in sales down to what it is now, we're only at 240 million? So I told my co-workers to get ready for either one of two things. A layoff or a soft layoff.
I explained that a soft layoff is simply as follows: reduce your hours, raise the cost of benefits upon renewal, stricter rules for your duties and safety, and more little things that they can write you up for. I then added, there are 1 of 2 things you can do now. Look for other work now, while you have a job or ride it out until the layoff. So the company went with the soft layoff as I expected. Since they are a MLM, announcing a layoff would most likely cause their army of consultants to drop even worse than they already are.
We have two shifts, a day and a swing shift. Right now, the day shift employees are below 50% of what they were, on Christmas of 2022. The swing shift had a little more leave, including supervisors.
As for me, I am watching videos like yours, to bone up my game, so if and when that time comes, and it will, I'll be ready. :) I'll return to edit this comment, or reply to you, to let you know when that happens. :) My prediction is 6 months, but hey, I'd love to be wrong. :)

One of the interviewers said at the end of a pleasant 45 mins of interviewing, "wow, [Department lead] is going to have a very tough time making this decision" which tells me I'm up against some stiff competition.

@@BenTalksTalent I also really wished that supervisors and managers would just be honest with me. No BS-just tell me how it is even if it’s bad. I feel like I waste so much time and effort trying to translate what they’re actually telling me between the lines. It was a particular issue with a supervisor at my last job. He would lie to me about the most stupid things about the job, even when I 100% knew he was lying to me.
I’m out of that situation now, thankfully but I’ll always wonder why he did it. Most of the time I could figure the reason for his lies. Usually it was to gain my cooperation with things that I didn’t want to do and the employment laws prevented him from forcing me to do it, such as overtime. For example it’s really close to the end of my shift and the final aircraft we’re supposed to clean before the end of the the shift was delayed and now it’s too late-my shift would end part way through cleaning it. Since there’s no point going to it because by the time all the equipment (aircraft stairs, water and lavatory trucks ect) is in place and the passengers have disembarked I would have to leave to go back to the crew room to sign out of the electronic sign in/out machine then go home. So because I’m not the only one whose shift is about to end and the supervisor doesn’t want to be short staffed, he lied to us in claiming that we had to stay and do overtime whether we wanted it or not. Basically trying to force us to stay on to help finish off that final plane. Fortunately I knew my legal rights which dictate that employers can only ask employees to do overtime and cannot force them to do it. He didn’t like it but backed down after my polite reminder.
On another occasion I’d been treated really appallingly by management and the supervisors who didn’t do anything to help me when the chronic short staffing meant I was the only person on duty all night despite having had 24 hours to find me help or come do it themselves. So I made discreet negotiations with another company that did the same aircraft services and arranged to transfer there. A week later the supervisor claimed that he was also going to go to the rival company and offered to put in a good word with their hiring manager because we’re friends and he has the connections.it didn’t take me long to figure out that he was simply trying to find out if I’m going.
      So slimy, he was.

It was an hour; we interviewed for 1 hr 1 minute 😂.
She asked plenty of times if I had questions after lengthy explanations and at the end.
One thing I listen for is “we” and language in the present tense. She followed me on this. She used lots of WHENs instead of IFs, then she just changed it to “if”.
Lots of smiling and polite communication. She let me know why she liked certain answers. One answer I don’t think I wowed her on. I could tell.
She did more talking than me. It seemed more informative than an interview. She was explaining what “we” do, the culture, who we’ll talk to and support. I think this is a dead giveaway but I’ll wait on you.

I answered the director's questions and he seemed somewhat reassured each time, but after 10 minutes over he still seemed not fully satisfied, and the manager seemed to understand that she would have to work on him. Sometimes the issue is that the requisition is approved, but only grudgingly. That's a low chance of _anyone_ getting hired--a variation on the 'we haven't figured out this position yet' red flag.

They interviewed me in behalf of my potential boss which is their subordinate because they were on vacay. They told me that they were going to talk this Monday and discuss my application further. They did ask me if I had questions and like they tried to drill me on, I drilled on leadership and how I could grow. During the interview, they were candid and were honest about answers to questions I had. I said I was excited about being a implementation specialist and that they seemed to be the right way forward in my progression for my career and that I wanted to learn everything that I can in the next few months and move into more advanced aspects. The interview was scheduled as the last interview of the week at the end of the workday for an hour and we signed off after about 50 minutes. It was a video call which made it a little harder to judge their thoughts on my answers. They did ask me to elaborate on one our two scenarios they threw at me and the team leader (department head) did mention that she was glad to have met me and it was a great way to wrap up. One red flag was she asked me to elaborate on how many cases I work on in a year (not many I come from a small institution, they are a large institution) When I first left the interview I felt pretty good but now as I wait the anxiety is setting in. Did we finish up to early?' I froze and asked virtually no questions when asked if I had any questions. One of the team members excused themselves about five minutes before the end of the interview because her appointment arrived early, was she just trying to escape?! I mean I made the comment I am unusual and the team leader laughed and said she is too. I got weird at the end not gonna lie and was overly chatty... oh dear I hope I get it this would be a game changer career move for myself and my family.

What about when the interviewer says up front “this is a very stressful position” and you hear all the hard parts of the job instead of hearing about you first as in usual job interviews?

I've had an interview go for way way longer than it should and still got passed over. Was rather puzzling to have so much of my time taken up.

Two days before I was interviewed by two interviewers at very big company. One of them was really kind and always smiling while the other was so strict and hardly talking. I don't know why but the one who is not talking much made me feel demotivated. My answers were generally good but I'm worried they were enough for them to hire me.

And I felt something is going wrong when the one interviewer told the other (serious one), if she had a question for me and then she started to talk.

I have experienced that. It’s really hard to know in those circumstances. Sometimes that person is just like that, like their personality.

I recently interviewed for what seemed to be a dream job. Hiring manager interview went fantastic (or so i thought). Panel interview was scheduled for 45 mins and ended 20 minutes in, being that the two interviewers were essentially a colleague and a manager I worked regularly with. The colleague told me that a future similar job in another state wasnt so bad. The manager also agreed his state is a good place too. Future potential job opening in that mgrs state and they chose the colleagues coworker who has less experience than me. You never truly know until you know.

Why can't they just say it like it is? Seems like honesty is dead in the recruiting process...

I hear you Blue, that would be much better. It’s frustrating, which is why I made the videos, to help candidates read between the lines since it appears they have to unfortunately.

Had my interview for internal promotion last Thursday and below were the red flags
    - Interview was cut short from 30 mins to 20mins
    - They only asked me if I have any questions once
    - They told me they will get back to me once they finished interviewing
I should start moving on now. lol

I got seriously lucky hiring for my job, which I've had for coming up on 20 years. It was an interview with just my supervisor. He looked at my resume and asked what I did in the Navy, I told him I was in nuclear power. He visibly brightened up, "Oh, my son is just going into Nuclear Power School!" The "interview" was 30 minutes of shooting the breeze about Navy boot-camp, nuke school, and life on an aircraft carrier. At the end of that, he asked, "So does this job sound like something you'd want to do?" "Yes." "Good, you'll get a letter in a couple days with a report date. We'll probably be seeing you next Monday!" That was it. I got the letter, called the number telling them I'm accepting, and I started the next Monday.

I had an interview today even though my interview didn't have any of these signs you mentioned it went sooo bad the interviewer asked me some trap questions interviewers probably uses to eliminate some of the applicants and I fell for this trap and I feel heartbroken it didn't hit me until I got back home and I was contemplating what just happened in my head
She said that if I get chosen I should receive a call in two days and if I don't it will be sign I got rejected
I need to recover first from this blow and get myself back up again I practice more and pray to never repeat the same mistakes I made today

I am sorry Ree, that must have been very hard. Don’t be hard on yourself, interviewing is hard! Keep practicing and preparing, don’t quit! If you ever need a video made about something specific let me know and I will make it!
