It is super easy to work those filler words out of your vocabulary that I learned in a communications class I took years ago. The solution is simple if you feel like you are about to say a filler word decide to pause your speech in that moment instead and speak once you have your thoughts in order again start talking at that point without that filler word. We use filler words because we are afraid of a moment of silence and just be ok with that silence and all is well.
7:28 Question: So if they ask if you have any questions at the beginning of the interview, should I say, “I have some questions, but I would like to defer them to later on”? That way, you can ensure you have time to answer their questions for you sufficiently. I had a recent interview where I made the strategic error of asking all of my questions up front. Then, when I was going through answering their questions - one of the panel members called me out, saying that we are halfway through the interview and I had only answered 3 questions and there are 5 more to go - plus some extra non-scored questions… At that moment, I knew the interview was over 😕
I was actually asked that question if the position was a stepping stone into the company and I said yes, few days later I had an offer, despite being "overqualified"...
Last year, I had an interview I was *really* looking forward to, and my dad (who was elderly and sick) called THREE TIMES (I had given my phone to my husband to look after). But dad needed to be transferred to the hospital, so it really was *that* urgent and he was blind and having trouble finding his doctor's number. Still so mortifying.
@@BenTalksTalent He died about 2 months later of that same bacterial infection. Never was able to shake it. They understood the very short (2 minute) interruption it took, thankfully, but I was missing something they were really looking for, so they went with a different candidate.
I'll have to disagree with the not lying part. Like when they ask why you want that job, everyone there knows it's because of the money but if you say because of the money, you're automatically disqualified.
Ben, I saw you at a virtual event with the Wounded Warrior Project, and I immediately subscribed to your channel. I have a phone interview tomorrow with a job I am really excited about, and I have watched your videos repeatedly in addition to other research and preparation.
Bro, I love the way you deliver these videos. Your personality is great! Hahaha BTW, I finally got a job but don't be shocked if I keep looking at ur vids.
Well congrats! I am very happy for you and I appreciate the kind words. I am going to try to incorporate more career content for people who aren’t in a job search in 2023!
If an interviewer asks if I’m considering any other offers at the moment so they know when they should get back to me, can I say “I am interviewing for other positions right now so I may have other offers to consider soon, but you can take your time getting back to me and I will evaluate each offer equally when making my decision”?
@@BenTalksTalent Tell them that another company was getting back to them in a couple of days, but you want to give this company first priority so you hope to hear back quickly or you may have to take the other job. If they really want you, they will prioritise and fast track you.
Great video! The more of your videos I watch, the more impressed I am by your seemingly unbounded energy and passion for what you do and the quality of your content. Always very thoughtful and beyond the cliches you hear from other RUclipsrs giving this kind of advice. You’re doing a great service here! Thanks for the information!
You mentioned not asking things like, "how much longer" during the interview. Is it ok to a) ask how long to plan when scheduling the interview; and/or b) inform the interviewer that you have another commitment at a certain time (i.e. a "hard stop" time for the interview)?
"Do you have any concerns about my ability to perform in this role?" So, that should be a question towards the END of the "question session," right? In fact, how damaging would it be, if one had about 10 decent questions, but this "concerns about my abilities" was their FIRST question?
Love love love your videos. Been watching many and subscribed. In general I do interview well. Been told so by various employers and have often landed the jobs I went for. All your tips 100% spot on. Watching to refresh my skills and potentially new tips. Its important to stay up to date and fresh. What is your opinion of bringing a hand out. I have brought a little folder with a copy of my resume (most of the time they have a cooy), a list of reference and some examples of my work. What do you think about that? I don't always do it, but it has always started good conversations. Thanks for what you do. This is so helpful for so many people. All the best.
I have watched several of your videos and it helped me a lot to prepare while waiting for an update regarding my job application in IBM. As part of my research, I watch some reviews and pieces of advice coming from the people who already experienced the same thing as mine. It is a good thing that I found your videos (subscribed and liked it), coming from a recruiter, and it is a great help for me on what answers I need to prepare for the sample questions you had. Still looking forward to have an interview invitation coming from them. Thank you!
English is my second language, so I often use "umm, umm" as I try to recall vocabulary. Thank you for your video; I will practice speaking more fluently.
I don't understand if they don't wanna hear these things why do they ask questions like "Tell me about a time you did not get along with a coworker" Or "Tell me about a time you disagreed with your manager"....
Would the "Stepping Stone" rule still apply if the position being applied for is an internship? When the position is quite literally a stepping stone...
I watched youtube for questions and answers on interviews and the same questions were asked, i imagine they may have seen it too and i answered the same as in the youtube. Makes me anxious maybe they'll think i have no originality 💀

That is really scary. That might be the type of exception that changes that situation. I would personally understand that.
