Given the realities of the modern post-2023 battlefield, every armoured vehicle, SAM system and artillery piece should be protected by an anti-drone defense system. Yes the cynics will say it is too expensive but the counter-argument is a US$3million T-90M, SMERCH, TOS--A1, 2S19 MSTA-S, disabled by a US$500 FPV drone!!!
It is very odd thing.
As using open source software libraries and simple cheap 100€ desktop computer that consumes a < 10 W power, and then connected with a camera system. One can build a optical drone detection system that can detect and track a targets that are smaller than a pixel.
That means, a camera with a 4K or even 5-6K sensor one can observe a large piece of sky to find a moving targets or stationary obvious, and then track them.
Sure you don't get a distance calculated, but you get detection and vector tracking. That is enough for simple triangulation if using two systems, or simple aiming with one.
IMHO then to build a cheap .22LR caliber minigun to fire good bursts up to 200-300 meters, or 5.45x39 to up to 400-500 meters with proper spread, and you can detect drones from 1-1.5 km and then engage when getting closer.
With proper rotating mirror lens, one could start scanning very large volumes of sky for drones when in good weather.
So of course a bad weather is limitation, and IR spectrum is too low resolution for long range detection or proper anyways. But such a < 3000 € system could be huge help to add close range protection.
Such system can detect a F-35 size target from 20-40 km away, that is not a bad feat for price, as now you could just install such low price sensors at larger area to passively detect things.
