For the light and particles I would recommend just adding light node in the particle system, it doesn’t require lumen and costs less than spawning a separate light
Thank so much for the video, Cobra! I just started your course and I'm loving it! You Did such a great job! Thank you! I'm on a journey trying to find more content about HD2D, that still lacks. Please bring more HD2D content to the game dev community!
Funny that you post a new video because a day ago I dreamed that you were releasing the beat em up course for the holidays lol. Sadly that was just a random dream haha. I hope you are making some progress with it!
I hate to destroy your dream... but the beat em up course is on ice :( Sorry Been hitting way too many road blocks with it and it was driving me insane. Instead took a break and created the Top Down Course instead. ...which was also tough and burned me out like crazy and caused me to fall behind when it comes to RUclips... so now trying to catch up with RUclips again😅
@@CobraCode Yea... I was one of the person that requested it and you told me you putting it to the side for awhile. Just thought maybe magically you had a break through since it's been awhile. But that's unfortunate but all good maybe in the future. I'll still be around for your contents!
@@Mr_Ramen_Noodle Thank you so much :) Yeah it definitely still is something I hope to make at some point in the future, but right now getting things into a stable place again is my priority.
Hey, sorry but combat is only shown in the Top Down Zelda like to keep the scope manageable. All of the things you learn there can also be applied to the HD 2D section, it's real time combat though and not turn based.
Hey Cobra, this genre is simply wonderful, I bought your course and wanted to know if you want to launch a course on RPG battles like the one in Octopath Traveler.
I was looking for a video like this and you literally posted it yesterday lol I'll take a closer look at my project to see if it's doable but i think i'll take your course really soon! Also, do you know if it's possible to do 2d sprites in WebP format inside Unreal? I know Unreal doesn't support it nativaly but it might be some workarounds Anyway, thanks, and see you soon on Discord!
Hi @CobraCode, great video as always! I have a question regarding platformers similar Little Big Planet. Do you have some tut or explainer on setting up 3D animated characters for 2.5D platformers? Cos so far what I saw was about setting up sprite-based characters. Thanks in advance!
Hey, thank you! I do have one tutorial on how to set that up, but it's a bit out of date due to changes to the enhanced input action system with UE 5.1. Outside of that it should still work the same: ruclips.net/video/ZGQoo9frBUA/видео.html I also have a devlog about making a game like that and even though it's not a tutorial it might still give you some good ideas. ruclips.net/video/P1GlOq81TZ4/видео.html
Hi Cobra, I got your course looking forward to going through the dialogue section for the HD2D! I had a question unrelated though please. I followed your tutorial on adding emissives to sprites and it works great. However if i use it the sprite itself is darker than if I use a regular sprite material with no emmissives. Any tips? Thanks again🤗
Thank you! With the Default Unlit Material the sprite illuminates itself which makes it appear brighter. If you use a Lit material it depends on the lights you have set up in the scene how it will appear. You might want to crank up the sky light a little bit or change the angle of your directional light to hit the sprite from the front.
Hey, great vid! How can i apply the effect that u used in the 2dhd course udemy trailer of camera occlusion? for camera to see through walls and always visualize player?
Hey, sorry but that's a quite complex topic and even the video about that is over 40 minutes long. I can't explain that through writing. I did create a snippet though which is part of the whole system and might point you in the right direction. dev.epicgames.com/community/snippets/Vg40/unreal-engine-mask-out-environmental-assets-blocking-view-to-player
Sadly advanced courses are a sure way to shoot yourself in the foot as a content creator. That's why you barely see any of them. I'd shut out 95% of potential viewers that way and it's just not sustainable. I aim to create my courses in a way that they're interesting for intermediates, but also allow beginners to catch up to that level, but of course there's a limit to what you can do with that.
@@CobraCode I think there is a huge demand as you seem to be one of the main 2d gamedevs for Unreal. Other creators such as DruidMechanics seem to be doing well with more advanced courses.
Hey! Nothing has really changed in regards to the courses, things still work mostly the same. Since I just finished the last course it's gonna take quite a while to figure out the next one. Most definitely not anywhere before summer next year!
Yes. Given my limited programming knowledge and skill set I really like using Unreal for everything I want to try. Using Unreal to make basic 2D pixel art games sometimes feels like using a bazooka to shoot a gopher.
Yes, certainly. The closest thing I can think of is Wunderling DX, Twilight Monk and Imp of the Sun. Here's a list I made with most UE 2D games tinyurl.com/Unreal2DGames
Hi! Why did you choose Unreal Engine instead of Unity, Game Maker or Godot that are more appropriate for 2D games? I read a lot that Unreal Engine is the worst engine for 2D games.
Hey, sorry but it's too long of a story. Might make a video specifically about that at some point cause I get asked often. For now this is the closest thing I have: ruclips.net/video/EnJohBT0VU4/видео.html
It shows massive ignorance on copyright/lawmakers end for allowing the phrase HD-2D to be copyrighted. This is a description of an art style, it would be akin to someone copyrighting the word "cell shaded".
Glad I was finally able to cover this.
I'm also really grateful to the dev team for putting this information out there!
For the light and particles I would recommend just adding light node in the particle system, it doesn’t require lumen and costs less than spawning a separate light
i think HD 2D games are the future for pixel art games. its such a unique and fresh take combining the traditional and new tech
beauty art, I am going directly to buy the course.
Cobra! Give us a quality Turn based RPG course and my life is yours!
I think that HD 2D is so awesome, is revolutionary. Fantastic video, congrats.
I already bought the course, thanks so much for providing it with very cheap cost
Thank you :D
I hope you'll learn a lot!
I just started your course thank you very much
Thank you Cobra!! this has helped me greatly in my Game dev Journey!!
Glad to hear that :)
Was a lot of fun to put this together.
Nice summary of the HD-2D process. It definitely is a style that should be used more
Thank you.
Yeah I think there's so much potential outside of just RPGs
i love that they put all this info out its really interesting, great video thanks
Thank you for doing this summary, extremely helpful!
Very interesting! Some of the aspects covered by this video would also work for hybrid animation mixing 2d and 3d! Thanks for sharing.
