- Over the past year, I remade Pokemon Black and White as Octopath Traveler. I started off as a complete beginner in pixel art, 3D modeling, and using Unreal Engine, but with the power of determination and stubbornness, anything is possible.

Thank you all so much for watching and leaving feedback! I would’ve never thought that this channel would blow up to the point it is now. There are two main issues that I want to address:
1. Firstly, I want to apologize for the sound of the audio. While editing the video, I didn’t really think the background music was an issue, but I believe that is due to the settings I use for my current setup.
2. Secondly, even after using clips from Castelia City, I continually stated that Pokémon Black/White is a 2D game. This is incorrect. I am so used to the 2D sprites, and since they are so iconic, it completely slipped my mind even after writing the script.
I’ll be addressing these issues in future videos and taking in as much feedback as I can to improve! Once again, I apologize for misleading and confusing you if I did, and thank you all for the support! (^_^)
Thank you for your amazing work! I think that gen 5 are the best looking Pokemon games, a remake in this style could definitely do them justice. I'm also happy to hear that there will be more videos in the future!

It's too late now, I'm sure. They most likely started development of the remakes with some form of 3D graphics (hopefully not Chibi).

Ikr? Honestly getting people to do all the work for you, and then collaborating with the creator of the work most people enjoyed, would have been the best way to maximize profits. I think Nintendo just hates the idea of anything outside of tradition.

They just want to get peoples attention solely on the next new thing they can sell at maximum price, since they know that most people won't buy an older game at 60 - 70$. People playing fan games and buying older games to play them with mods, doesn't get them as much money as just trying to get people to buy new games.
Yeah, why prosecute them? That's negative press and lots of money. Offer them a job or a sponsorship for less money and positive press...

This has BEEN the direction I've wanted GF to take the pokemon games ever since octopath traveler came out, this is ridiculously impressive!!
And the crazy thing is, it could be even better. He admitted he’s not an expert in certain things and so a team of devs could really make the game pop
fr the mainline pokemon games dont belong in full 3D especially if there not gonna have good art direction and make it look like shiet. they should either use the same engine star rail/genshin impact uses or go with octopath traveler style.
@CatTheGato Pokémon would lose sales if they went back to 2D now. 3D is the norm and 3D is what the best-selling games of this era are. They will lose money if they go 2D again.
@@sigvif we know that 3D is the norm, but pokemon is better than the norm. And it started in 2D and did great while it was in 2D. Tell me, if 3D is the way to go then why isnt the anime in 3D ? Its because thats not what looks best for pokemon.
@@CatTheGato Legends Arceus was the only Pokemon game that justified the 3D with the catching and stalking mechanics that could only be done in 3D; all the other 3D games were made in 3D for the sake of being 3D. Unicorn Overlord got rave reviews.

First of all, Nintendo only owns one-third of the franchise. They can't hire anyone without approval from GF and Creatures. Second, they already make profits with the teams they have. They don't need to hire foreigners.

Game Freak don't need to hire anyone like this. They're perfectly capable of making a game in this style with a hell of a lot more expertise and funding. The issue is that they choose not to
@@Johnjohnson2695the main problem is their directors mainly care about money which isn't super uncommon for Japanese companies in general. I wouldn't be surprised also if more stuff came out about over work at Nintendo and game freak. Ik a little has already
A little rough around the edges, but really well put together as a "quick" proof of concept. It was really cool getting to see what this would look like.
Just wondering for myself what did you see to consider rough around the edges?
@@yaboiimo The UI is a little basic, the textures are a tad on the weak side, and the trees are a bit repetitive. Like, nothing one would reasonably complain about for a project of this scale, but it probably wouldn't hold up in a final release.

Gamefreak dont do realistic 3D, bro. They make cellshaded 'anime ish' style. There was never a realistic 3D Pokemon game, not even Pokemon Snap or Stadium.

@@PrismaticGuild I would still say its "anime" style, because the characters in the game don't go for a realistic look. The textures in the environment may be more realistic looking, but I would still say the art direction was going for a painterly, anime look. The Pokemon themselves also don't have much texture on them in PLA (compared to SV) and so they have a more "cell shaded" style too.
Gamefreak has never done realistic 3D
this style is amazing, just imagine how diamond and pearl remakes would have look with it...
It makes me sad that gen 4 remakes were in that chibi style. Waited so long for the remakes to only be disappointed. Really feels like gamefreak just wanted to push them out for a quick buck and to shut up fans who were asking for them.

@@Pixxelll I know… they ruined my favorite generation! this is basically all I wanted after Gen 5! Most likely they would’ve had to transition to full 3D, but it would’ve given them more time to work on the animations, models, and a consistent art style for the Switch!

In the past month, I started studying Unity and trying to make a 2.5D game. But lately my enthusiasm has faded because my laptop is getting more and more laggy.
But your video restored my enthusiasm to try to continue learning again.

Octopath traveler ii is probably my favorite game ever so it's great to see the same style used for the pokemon franchise (which i love too)
The camera for the battle doesnt need that zoom in / zoom out, but amazingly done! Wow. Impressive.

Yeah, it's cool and cinematic-looking, but it's important to remember that the player is going to undergo several hundred battles (possibly upwards of a thousand depending on how much they play). Having so much movement and animation can become physically sickening (in my case) and/or time-wasting in the eyes of the player.
I often see that, during nuzlocke runs, players will turn off battle animations (or equip some sort of fast forward through ported games) the instant that they start a run because it's so much time wasted on something that they've already seen hundreds of times before. Imo I think that, for a game like pokemon, those repetitive transitions should be follow the three S's: Short, Sweet, Subtle. Or alternatively, the animations should be made short and incredibly unique so that they never get old.

I haven't kept up with Pokemon, but creators with ideas like you are what truly keeps me hoping the franchise improves or at least get adopted by other games in the genre. This looks awesome and must have taken ages.
Thank you for giving full visual context for something I've thought for awhile. I want THIS but for X and Y with the addition of id like them to extra take on more octopath and let us actually play through some of what the other assistants of that friend group had going on. I think that would genuinely be a way to remake those games in a truly beautiful way.

Awesome concept and execution! I'm a little biased as an octopath fan but the 2.5D aesthetics are so good, it's really neat to know a little more of what goes into creating them and to see how they can be applied to other things like pokemon!
My only suggestion would be to make the smaller text bigger if possible - I have this issue with octopath too, where those speech bubbles can be really difficult to read from both a phone or TV screen.

I've always imagined remakes of Black and White to be like Octopath Traveler. The games' 2d and 3d graphics mix always felt so similar to me.

Awesome work dude! Looks amazing! The lighting and depth really capture the colours and mood of the original. I love the small glowing particles in the air adding that extra bit of atmosphere and depth.
I would not be upset if pokemon went this route with remakes, but I know gamefreak won't want to give up all their 3D re-use, even if it's like BDSP where the dex is limited to the original pokemon.

Ive had this idea in my head since Octopath came out. I feel like a gen 5 remake would be gorgeous in an Octopath style HD-2D style game. This art with a proper looking pokemon battle system would be killer.
