Man i just need a video like that. I'm a guy that always try read and investigate before going to action but sometimes one can get stuck by his own effort on studying without practicing. Currently, I'm going to shot my first important short movie with a friend where I will be the cinematographer and i felt this feeling to need to know about everything (lighting, shots, camera movement, camera features, future problems, etc) and i was getting overwhelmed by all, worrying for the short movie to be great as responsible of the final photography. Also, happens with my first video I'm doing for RUclips (new channel) i wanted to do it so well that i still didn't finish the script (it's a explained video with animations, shots and voice-over). With your video and the way you explained gave me a lot of motivation and confidence to just go for it. I appreciate it a lot. You are great source of inspiration for me. As a cinematographer, RUclipsr and teacher. Thank you 🙏❤️
Great video as always! Well I fully agree: learning is the perfect balance of theory and practice. The old phrase: "practice, practice, practice." is dead wrong. You can learn errors to absolute perfection. I ususlly shorten it to: theory = think; practice = feel. Or like the great Miles Davis said about jazz music: first you need to learn everything (theory), then you need to forget it all (what remains is practice). And yes I couldn't agree more: whining about the lack of gear and opportunities doesn't get you anywhere. Making the best of what you have with inexpensive and resourceful DIY solutions does. We are living for the first time in an era where this is possible with a cell phone or a digital camera for under USD 500 - and easily accessible software. Thanks, as always, for the Inspiration!
I remember how useful Wolfcrows articles were to me. I cant find them anymore, but they were very well written, to the point, with a touch of Wolfcrow humor.
I learned how to swim as a child. But I got better at it by swimming later in life (43) WITH a triathlete. No, I never entered a triathlon and never will, but I SURE improved my swimming style via his coaching! Wow, did you nail me on the lazy! Even at 73 I have no excuses; thanks, I'll get off my backside and start doing something useful!
In the military, we use a great axiom that I used on my sons constantly when they were growing up; "The maximum effective range of an excuse is zero point zero meters." I never asked them "why" they did or did not do something. I only asked them if they did it and if they knew the consequences of those actions (good or bad!). Just something to think about when you want to accomplish something and you are feeling overwhelmed...
I always love your videos. Very enlightening. I need to start practicing. Have been watching tones of tutorials waiting to get a super dope camera before I Start...now I guess I'll have to use my phone. Thank you
Brother you are the best!!! I love your videos. Even as a professional Cinematogragher I always come away with valuable information and enjoy how your content is so well presented. I highly recommend your courses for anyone interested in Cinematograghy
I really appreciate your channel. You have soooo much knowledge and I feel I can trust what you are saying because I hear from your way of talking. You know what you are talking about! So thank you so much!!!!! :-) People say to me that I have to choose, directing (which I love, but do not have practice with) or cinematography that I know a lot more about and are "good" at. I want to do both, but perople say I need to find one. I feel like a Director is a Cinematographer in many ways? What are your thoughts on this?
Heyy man, I need some help, I'm supposed to make my Cinematography showreel and submit it with my portfolio on 1st june,. But because of the pandemic, I was not able to shoot much for the past year. Hence I don't have a lot work to put on my showreel. I do have my camera with me, but i have no lights . I was thinking of shooting something inside my home, but I've only had couple of ideas. . can you suggest something that I can shoot with no artificial light and still make a cinematic video out of it?
Absolutely true. There's a lot of people on internet teaching youtube filmaking... Both are different! But people fail to understand that .. i really want to watch your premium videos but i dont have much money...... But am earning now with shooting weddings Nd will watch them..
Nice content and must needed for the less practical cinematographers . My question is how to overcome a scenario where you do not have actors or places as you wish in mind . Not lazy and broke , what to do in such a situation?
"You're not poor or broke, you're Lazy". Bars
"If you're a champion at making excuses, film yourself making excuses" 😂😂😂 I love it!
It works, I did it! 🤣
Same though 😂
"Go f-stop yourself" 😂

Amazing and I love the philosophy which transcends filmmaking itself.
i have just watched the best vidéo on how to learn cinematography, PERIOD!

Very profound sir
The whole video was amazing but the end put the cherry on top. I love everything you said!
This is the best approach / philosophy of art I have ever read. 🙏
never thought i'd enjoy this video so much, lots of wisdom and reality checks.
I've been following your channel for a long time. Let's just say I like you and your content sir.
*20% Theory*
*80% Practice*
I always love your videos. Very enlightening. I need to start practicing. Have been watching tones of tutorials waiting to get a super dope camera before I Start...now I guess I'll have to use my phone. Thank you
You’re welcome!
So many different moods in this vid. Thanks for the push.
Good advice. "I attribute my success to this: I never gave or took an excuse" - Florence Nightingale
Thank you for the wisdom.
I was recently thinking about filming myself making excuses the other day. What a great reminder this is that you simply have to start.
"Did you just list your job as 'Tolstoy'?"
"Yes."
You’re good!!! I like how you serve the message.
Your videos want me run to and fro with my android phone native camera on. You just inspire me to the core. Love your contents 😇😇😇

You sold me in seven minutes and eight seconds.
Preach.
Cool Channel.
Can you do a similar video about directing?
Nice content and must needed for the less practical cinematographers . My question is how to overcome a scenario where you do not have actors or places as you wish in mind . Not lazy and broke , what to do in such a situation?
I mean you have no one as actors for shoot , because you are broke . And a scenario where other people also lazy to come to your project .
@lilmil I am unable to control cinematography and acting then . I need some actors that's the main .
“Go f-stop yourself” - I lost it
Came here for cinematography know-how, stayed for them red pills
cool video :D
cool
I liked how he subtly changed the topic to promote his online film school LOL xD
Who's Fosse? He/She is a camera and a filmmaker?
Is this a joke?
The beatings will stop when moral improves.
That Fossa analogy was spot on!
I dont have a smart phone, I have a flip phone... but I also have a Red Komodo...
Homie said go F-stop yourself… dead 💀
Tell It, Tell It, Tell It!!!!
this fossa example is suspiciously specific
Need a "Go F-Stop Yourself" t-shirt for the next time I grab my camera 😂😂😂.
How to learn cinematography?
Just watch a bunch of Terry Gilliam films...
Theory will only take u so far
"You can never be a real fossa." One of the saddest sentences in the English language
skip to 6:00, for tl:dr.
Such as how to pronounce Fossa
3:36
Bro
Quality! 'Go f-stop yourself!' Gonna use that one!
useful 7mins.
i just became a fossa
Hahaha! make a video about you making excuses!!! Classic. Well said.
I mean. I do like your videos... But to call yourself 'the best' is upright boastful and reduces my respect for Wolfcrow. Not cool.
