- A few months ago I heard cinematographer Roger Deakins offering his perspective on realism in image-making, and the balance between authenticity and interpretation. His words inspired me to create this video, and share what I believe is the central message we should learn and apply to our work.
Audio narration by Roger Deakins from Episode 9 of the Team Deakins Podcast.

I pray Roger & James lives much more longer the world still needs their art.
This channel is so underrated, awesome quality, love it.
Thanks!
That’s exactly what I think!!!
One of the most important videos about photography and art in general available on youtube. Thanks.
Hi,
As a film student and aspiring cinematographer, I wanted to thank you because you said what I needed to hear.
I've been listening to a variety of podcasts about cinematography and yes, I should let myself express my vision.
Great video, amazing tip, thank you Todd!
So inspiring. Love your encouragement. Thank you.
Excellent subject, handled concisely for the viewer. Todd, you're always a favorite, and this piece is a perfect example.
This is amazing. Thanks for sharing it.
Great points. So much of what we precieve comes from thought and memory. Even our fears and limitations have words and pictures, as well as images. Just opening our imagination to include everything will fill the mill with grist. There is an unlimited pallet within everyone's experience, and when we collaborate we reinforce it. Thanks for sharing.
Great video Todd.
Super inspirational as always. Thanks, Todd.
Very nice work Todd! Thank you.
This is just soo true. I am very new to this field. People like you are the reason people like me choose to carry on instead of quit. THANK YOU SOO MUCH :)
Nice work Todd! Your intellectual style is very satisfying to watch. Please keep doing this ❤️

Great Vlog, Thanks Todd for something completely different. well done and on point as always.
Love this!! I am always so hung up on trying to get the photo to look exactly like in real life, so this is very inspiring.
This is beautiful and the philosophy behind it is actually really deep that we all need to look inward to reflect outward; thanks for making this : )
Just perfect! And so beautiful…. The way good cinema is, in my opinion. Thank you very much, Todd!

Great Todd. Thank you very much for your help inspiring.
What a wonderful video essay on the philosophy of deakins' cinematography style. This is why i strive for something as beautiful as his work in my own. Ill never be on that level but he is an inspiration nonetheless

excellent
Great video🔥,,,whats that masterpiece playing behind deakin's voice in the beginning
Great video! More like this. Hope you’ll grow on RUclips - if that’s what you want :)
Please, what is the name of the first music ?
Deakins is a master, but I think that having huge budgets and access to technology, and no limitations when it comes to lights, I think that any decent talented DP would achieve the same
Plenty of big budget movies that look like garbage so I don’t think your argument holds much water
