    In this video I make a recommendation to change over to iridium plugs when it is time. Most major vehicle manufacturers switched to iridium over a decade ago because of the following:
    - Super long life
    - Very hard to foul
    - Easy starting
    - Can in most cases run a wider gap (goes with easy starts)
    Nothing wrong at all with the factory V-power plugs other than you can do better and mostly forget about your plugs. Interesting that the master service manual mentions iridium plugs (speaking to not gapping them) but merc chose to cheap out.
    Get the plugs I use in this video here! Great price, you need 4qty.

    Putting plug #4 boot back on was more difficult than getting plug #4 out. Great video, I used the NGK iridium .44 gap plugs on my Merc 115 Pro XS, well she how she runs spring 2022.

      I was having the same issue. Removed all the nuts to remove the side cowling with no luck. Didnt want to force the issue and break something that would cost more than a spark plug. Here is what works for me, I use a Power Torque 2 1/2" 5/8 spark plug socket (O'reilly part# GM8250) with a swivel end along with a 6" extension and a Power Torque 3/8 drive universal joint (O'reilly part# GM8260) connected to ratchet. Once I break it lose I remove the ratchet and universal joint and remove it by hand. Installation use the 6" extension with the spark plug socket until hand tight then attached universal joint and ratchet or torque wrench to tighten. This is on a 150, may have to figure out the tool combo for your use if not a 150.

    for the number 4 (bottom) plug, I found it easier to tilt/turn the motor so I'm not having to contort my hands/arms to get it started

    I just took the plugs out on my 115 pro xs for some winterizing and those plugs from the factory were super loose. Not sure what torque spec they were at, but they definitely were not torqued to 20 foot pounds...

    Hey bruh, for us “visual learners” would you consider a video regarding the newer Mercury 75, 90 and 115hp spark plug change? Specifically the removal of the number-4 plug, which is the most difficult to remove and re-install…🤬 P.S. Love-your-videos… 🛥🔧

    How did you change the bottom spark plug? I have such a hard time fitting a socket in there to change it. Is there a trick to this one? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

      Hey Cliff, I used a short extension and socket. Inserted it first, and then attached the wrench. Was not so bad.

    The bottom plug is the hardest to get out and in, which extension is best for this. I am having a lot of trouble with this one.

    So my mercury 150 pro XS 4 stroke calls for Ngk-zfr5f, would zfr5fix-e work for me as well? Its the same gap but wanted to ask u cause u definitely know more about them then I do lol😂 and would they be better for me as well?

    • @MR_Garage
      @MR_Garage  Год назад +1

      I would go with a zfr5fix-11. Gap is the next standard size wider at .043. With the fine wire electrode compared to the wide nickel tip on your stock plug, this gap should prove to be just fine (I ran wider on my 115 proxs - never an issue).
      The fix-e will also work but had double the resistance which is not needed. Seems the fix-e was designed for better noise suppression in a certain use case.

    • @jasonclark625
      @jasonclark625 Год назад

      @@MR_Garage so I bought the -11 but I doubled checked my manual and it only recommends the .032 gap. Think the -11 .043 gap will still be just fine?

    • @MR_Garage
      @MR_Garage  Год назад +1

      -11 is perfectly fine in this situation (.043) with an iridium plug. Send it!

    • @MR_Garage
      @MR_Garage  10 месяцев назад

      Use a spark plug socket with short extension. Add a few more short extensions until you can reach the plug. Not that bad if you add extensions in sections.

    I am unable to find these for my 75hp with .032 gap. , which is what the decal on the motor says the gap should be.

    • @MR_Garage
      @MR_Garage  2 года назад

      Running iridium, you do not need to run a .032 gap in this application. Do not try and change the gap, run them as is!

    • @MR_Garage

      I do not have this outboard anymore but zero doubts it is running flawless. You will not have issues. Nothing special about these motors and in automotive, most all manufactures switched to them mid 2000's.

    I installed the ZFR5FIX-11 with default 1.1mm gap into my Merc 150 4-stroke and noticed at my graphing speed (800-900 rpm) that my motor felt like it was missing and stuttering, but it ran fine beyond 900 rpm. Yesterday I switched back to new ZFR5F factory recommended plugs with .8mm gap and the 800-900 rpm issue is gone. Can a .3mm difference in gap really cause the issue that I experienced?

    • @MR_Garage
      @MR_Garage  2 года назад

      Spark blowout would never happen on these technically low performance 8v tractor motors. My only thought is, did you use a slide gapping tool on the iridium plugs? My guess would be that one had its tip fractured.
