Actually I doubt he would have that problem. Because he’s adding pure sand...his lawn drains like a sieve providing the underlying slope is adequate and it appears to be. That’s why it’s good to use clean white beach sand when doing this. It slowly over time self compacts and will not hold water by simply adding a mm here or there. The water will move through that sandy base like a funnel.

I worked at a golf course over 30 years ago. We did this to level the greens, but we used a large broadcast spreader and a steel mesh drag. We would drag clockwise, then counterclockwise. Watching this video made my back hurt. We used a loader to fill the spreader. I think you use coarse sand as it doesn’t hold moisture as well, makes it easier to spread. This makes a huge difference when you’re mowing. If only I had the time!
My dad and I did this when I was a kid, 40 years ago. We killed 90% of our lawn... I can still hear our old man neighbor telling my dad, "youre gonna kill your lawn, Dan"... and he did...

I did this to my lawn about 12 years ago and my neighbors thought I was crazy until I explained what it was for and then they all wanted to do it but were too lazy.

I bet the grandkids really enjoyed that ride. I've seen a guy pull an old boxspring mattress behind a tractor to smooth our a dirt road...it works fine...for fine grading, Just gotta make sure its brought back in the bedroom before someone's ass hit the floor unexpectedly. Did it more than once on a boxspring mattress at my girlfriend's grandmother's house in Detroit years ago. We'd bounce horizontally two feet high on that. So much fun, and brought back memories. Thank goodness the house was two doors away from the fire station, just in case someone hurt themselves. This is a true story. And that nite in the living room we were watching the black group from Detroit, The Spinners singing "Rubberband Man. It was that nite we bounced on the spring mattress for the first time. Girlfriend was watching her grandma's house while she was away. Man, that was a long time ago. But hey, seems like just last year.
I've seen guys run over a ball field with a section of chain link, same deal. Box spring would work better I'd say. They had a piece of wood fastened to the trailing edge of the fencing.
Thats what happen when the wife dont pay mind to you anymore so he has to find anytning to ocupied him self with!! You right lawn was flat but at least he feels avompanied by yje bugs and worms !😂😂😂😂
It's because he mows his yard with a powered reel mower normally used to mow putting greens. When your grass is a half inch tall you can visually see low and high spots and it would drive someone like him crazy.
I have a field about 3 acres in size that desperately needs this leveling approach. After each rain, you can see all the low areas, by just look for the puddles. Job well done. Thanks for the advice.
I bet you could drag around a 10ft x 3ft chunk of chain link fence and it'd do the job and be lighter. It'd cut the time down too since it'd be a big square chunk of many contact points....a bit more than the 3 rails on that homemade thing.
@@Aerialassault155 ya may not be fully understanding me. Check this for the full idea. (also...this guy uses cinder blocks, but old tires are actually better) ruclips.net/video/LCHoDXpIQ7A/видео.html
I showed this video to my wife so that in the future, she would let me do anything to my yard. If this guy can sweep his grass flat, then nothing I have done re: yard maintenance can be considered excessive. Thanks flat-grass guy!
I have 4 acres, and mow it with a 6 foot Landpride mower pulled by an old Ford 8 n tractor. My lawn is country grass, that is kentucky Blue, fesque, rye and a bunch of junk, but when it's cut it looks nice. My unflat lawn when cut with a zero radius Xmark or other commercial mower, you bounce like a basketball, and is so uncomfortable to mow. So I appreciate you showing us what to do. I have a front loader, by Ford new Holland, and could do this a little quicker than shoveling by hand. And for guys attempting this, no one says it has to all be done in a weekend, or the entire year for that matter. Break it down into segments.
Cant believe I'm taking lawn advice from a dude that not only owns 2 flamingo t-shirts... he actually wears them ! :) Good video, educational and entertaining.
A few questions; How much did you pay a load? What kind of sand??? I heard there’s multiple types What part of the country is home? Great job like you said hard work but well worth it. Thank you for the video
Good video. Even better comments. This video has to have sparked some of the funniest responses I’ve read in a long time on RUclips. Looks like the work paid off!
You should mount the broom heads on the back of your drag grate. This way the front metal knocks down the piles upon impact and the brooms push the sand down into the canopy as they pull behind.
I was searching for ways to fill in spots that have become uneven in my yard due to a lot of rain the past two years. I don't know if I can pull off what you've done, but it's a great idea to start. Thank you!
Connor you are a workhorse , you work all day at your day job then come home and shovel and spread 15 tonne of sand . Hard work and dedication makes the lawn and gardens you have. 😁👍👍
I've done the wheel barrow for this exact job a couple of years ago. That was miserable. I am so glad that I figured out something easier. The shoveling of the sand was all the work.
what is that small ATV? I have a half acre lot and the yard is crap (just moved in a few months ago) might need something like that lugging all my dirt around to fix it. the big one would be too big/expensive for me being in a neighborhood. great videos
This was my job 20 years ago at the local golf course..... Flatest nicest greens in town thanks to this method every year. Great video and honestly never thought to try it at my home. Nice channel.
My mom had the same drive to want the perfect flat yard, I know she didn’t grow up with one being from Hawaii their yard was multilevel, small and not seen from the street. But every summer in Texas heat and humidity, my dad and I were following her instructions moving sand with just a wheelbarrow and a shovel. Pulling weed roots by hand, working a mixture of banana peels, egg shells and coffee grounds into her Rose garden. Ugh I hated it. But now with my own home I do my best to have maybe not the best lawn but a close 2nd or 3rd on the street. I really need to start on leveling this year. I cut down a diseased 60yo maple few years back and even though I stump friend it down what remained has rotted I guess and now lawn has a big dip in it. Great lawn sir and your dedication to it is very nostalgic for me.
thanks for sharing that. I was the same. I was forced as a child to work in the yard with my parents. I hated it. Now that I have my own home I love it. I do not force my children to work in the yard though. Having flat lawn... it looks nice.
Connor Ward thanks. This will be my yard goal this year! I was using peat moss for the low spot, cuz it’s lighter, it helped a bit but spot was still spongy. Maybe your kids could help a little to gain that same appreciation we got! Haha.
Good job, absolutely nothing more rewarding than pride in ownership getting your hands dirty, and a hard days work,...your in pretty good shape pal, moveing 14 to 15 ton of material by hand in a few hours is awesome, I've seen guys eat up an entire Saturday doing similar projects and that's with a couple of buddies helping them out.
@TheMatron'sMilitia Thanks,I seriously don't have the umph I used to have and I feel like I am dying when I get up in the morning I can't just get up and go and it worries me
Thank-you! I've known about top dressing for some time, but never knew how to do it. I put a $400 suspension seat on my Kubota, when I could have spent the money on some sand, haha. I'm doing this in the fall. Thanks again.
I did this with a lawn 20+ years ago. But instead of just sand I did a 50/50 mix of sand and compost from aerating, thatching, moss removal and grass clippings from the season before. I didn't have a quad for leveling but used a 16' 2x4 and my wife's help to screed the mixture in like leveling concrete. My lawn where I live now is terrible, I need to add some sand and compost and completely renovate it. But I will need other help since my wife is now 62!!!
Kevin Noble 👍Same here. My lawn used to be one of the best in the neighborhood now when I walk. I’m almost embarrassed but I’m just fed up because it’s such a ongoing process that takes so much time effort and money✌️(screw it)
I should have made it more clear my lawn now is a different place. I have moved since I did the first place. This place was never done right and my well doesn't have enough capacity to water more than 20 minutes before it goes too low to pump.
I use a 50/50 mix of topsoil and compost. $40/scoop. 3 scoops covered 1500 sq ft. I dropped it in piles and raked it smooth. Then I worked over it with a leaf rake to bring out the grass that was underneath. I had a lot of bare spots so I heavily seeded it. Watered it 2x a day for a month. Water bill cost $60 more for the month. But it looks good. Have to do front lawn this year. Maybe in fall though.
@Mr O Holy shit! You let that big ass, fully loaded dump truck at 3:05 back up onto that concrete slab...crrrrrrrrack!!!! You shoulda' had the load dumped right at the edge of the concrete. My God, you just ruined a very expensive slab over what is probably a $200 load of sand.
I did something similar to level topsoil across an area whee I had a ditch culvert installed, then filled in. However, I took one of my 5ft high 4ft wide chain link fence gates off of the fence, ran climbing rope through the hinges, rigged 2x4s tol hold bricks on too for weight, then attached the whole rig to my riding lawn mower. Worked like a charm.
Connor, What kind of dirt do you have in your area? I've got heavy clay soil, I'd like to try this out, but I'm wondering if the sand will actually work itself in without being turned, or just run off in the next rain. I've got mostly KY Bluegrass, 80-90%. Also, in the years you've been doing this, did the sand ever change your pH to the point where the grass started flagging in health? I like you that drag is also a perfectly good looking fence when you're not using it. Nice bit of kit.
M Larsen I’m from GA and farmed for a bit of my life in our very heavy red clay. Adding sand is a very tricky procedure for clay. Too small of a grain size and you will turn your clay into concrete. The best thing for clay is organic matter (compost etc). Buy a truck load of compost and do what he did and you will probably be better off than using sand. Take a few samples (4 per 1000sqft of yard) to your local Ag extension, they will tell you if adding sand to your soil type will work or not. Good luck 🍀👍
Same here ... my lawn is GREEN and a few other colors because it is diverse. Stuff grows, I mow it. Or in the case of dandelions, I harvest to get healthy benefits from the greens, roots, and yellow flowers. For sure, no chemicals ever go on my lawn. After a 4” snow, my lawn looks just as great as the neighbor who spends all summer fussing with feeding the lawn. 🤣
I rigged a broom system on a sand pro. Worked great and put the sand down fast and level. Of course, it was a hydraulic lift and very stiff so the level was easy to achieve. Great video.
Way easier to spread and level sand. Also, the sand will mix with the soil, and give you a better drained soil. It is also easier for the roots to grow into the sandy soil.
Bro, I admire the HELL out of you for your hard work and commitment but OMG my back and knees are friggin killing me just watching this. Besides, your lawn was gorgeous when you started!
If it takes 15tons for this guys damn near level yard i'm easily in the hundreds if not thousands of tons for my yard. Nice work yard looks absolutely amazing but damn I ain't got time for all that.
Great videos, many thanks from Ireland. It is surprising how many D.....heads make so-called fun of your work. What would be best time of year to apply sand ? I have a fairly level lawn but I intend to improve it as much as I can .Thank You
Yeah.. I am not going to give them the satisfaction by responding to their retarded comments. The best time of year would be in the spring or in the fall. When the grass is growing the strongest. It needs a good month or more before it goes into the harsh season be it summer or winter. Thanks for watching.
@@yitzakshekelberg2465 in that case you would need to start over again I suppose to level out your lawn and reseed. I'm no lawn expert but that's what I'd do instead. This fella likes throwing money away it seems. I'm a farmers son so I've a fair idea how grass works :)
I totally get this. His lawn looks amazing, but so does mine when the grass grows in. The problem comes in when mowing, you don't get an even cut. Also (and probably the most annoying reason) during the rainy seasons, all the low spots turn into a swampy mess. It's a lot of tedious work, but I commend you.
I don't know but it looked pretty flat before
Thats what happen when the wife dont pay mind to you anymore so he has to find anytning to ocupied him self with!! You right lawn was flat but at least he feels avompanied by yje bugs and worms !😂😂😂😂
J CM lmmfaoooo only because this hits home. Thanks dude.
Some spot its low because of foot print. It happen when walking while raining.
"Mom...that weird guy at the corner is throwing sand on his lawn again..."
30 tonnes a year...
If I did this my neighbors woulf think Im cracked out. "Why the hell is that guy sweeping his yard?" Well at least Im not using a vacuum.

I bet you could drag around a 10ft x 3ft chunk of chain link fence and it'd do the job and be lighter.
It'd cut the time down too since it'd be a big square chunk of many contact points....a bit more than the 3 rails on that homemade thing.
R C would flex too much and not create a flat screed across the 10ft width. Good idea though
@@Aerialassault155 ya may not be fully understanding me. Check this for the full idea. (also...this guy uses cinder blocks, but old tires are actually better)

literally every little league/baseball field on earth has one of these to rake the infield...
I have to do this to make a newly installed drainfield level. Your results are amazing.
The wife is lucky to have a husband who takes care of the lawn and flowers/trees.
A few questions;
How much did you pay a load?
What kind of sand??? I heard there’s multiple types
What part of the country is home?
Great job like you said hard work but well worth it.
Thank you for the video
Good video. Even better comments. This video has to have sparked some of the funniest responses I’ve read in a long time on RUclips. Looks like the work paid off!
I spread 45 yards of recycled asphalt millings and 50 yards of loam in April. All by hand. Was a boat load of fun.
You should mount the broom heads on the back of your drag grate. This way the front metal knocks down the piles upon impact and the brooms push the sand down into the canopy as they pull behind.
That's a great idea!
Hard work = good outcome. Thanks for the video, it gave me some ideas.
I just put small pieces of turf from lowes on top of my lawn low spots. And to my surprise it worked great
That's a man who takes care and pride in his castle. Well done sir, well done!
I was searching for ways to fill in spots that have become uneven in my yard due to a lot of rain the past two years. I don't know if I can pull off what you've done, but it's a great idea to start.
Thank you!
Same here
Awesome! It’s like one of those super satisfying videos brother. Keep em coming Connor 🙏🏻
Fantastic.. finally i have found my next place to do drifting with my monstertruck.
Connor you are a workhorse , you work all day at your day job then come home and shovel and spread 15 tonne of sand . Hard work and dedication makes the lawn and gardens you have. 😁👍👍
WORK? I don't see a wheelbarrow...
It is a Honda 90cc. Can't remember the exact model number.
You are a hard worker Connor ,you worked out an easier with the ATV but you still shovelled all that sand into the trolley. 😁👍👍
Haha.
Good recommendations ! I am glad I`m living in tiny Switzerland with a very tiny lawn!😀
I have 3 acres of "lawn"... I'm lucky I get it mowed below 3 feet on a regular basis
i don't understand why you don't use topsoil? Our ground here in NJ is very sandy to begin with and we need to put more topsoil on our grass areas.
Great job! Despite the rude comments! Gotta be proud of your homestead.
It was worth my efforts.
If I’m ever over in the states I’m helping you out son, massive job! Solid as bro.
This guy makes me laugh every time...such a fricken rebel. See how he just threw that gasoline on to the gas tank on that quad? Fricken Connor. 😂
You move fifteen tons and what do you get? Another day older and...a flatter lawn.
Pro1er you sir are old as shit, for referencing that song! wait a second, I caught the reference, I guess that means I'm old as shit also😒
I happen to be a proud Medicare card carrier. ;-p
If I did that -- a flatter stomach.
He owes his soul to the sand store.
Yeah I sure do
I give this man alot of credit He is a hard working SOB I did tis in my 20s and 30s but just dont have the WHATEVER to do it anymore WISH I DID
@TheMatron'sMilitia Thanks,I seriously don't have the umph I used to have and I feel like I am dying when I get up in the morning I can't just get up and go and it worries me
Kevin Noble Have you considered trading the 62 yr old wife in for two 31 yr olds. Then no need for you to do ANY of the work. . . . Just sayin' . . .
Initially I was thinking of two 20 year olds, but my wife says I am not wired for that.
That sounds tough, you have a very loving wife.
For years people have been telling me to go pound sand. .... If id only known this before .... Wow !!!!!!
don’t forget to factor in the curvature of the earth which btw is not a perfect sphere!
Dude! I'm building a broom drag, and just saw your comment. I'm glad I'm not the only crazy broom dragger!
Thought it has to be done in the growing season so you don`t suffocate and kill the dormant grass?
Impressive effort - well done. Is it river or sea sand, and how much does it cost in your area?
my back started aching just watching this video.
His lawn is 10x better than mine before he even started. 🤣
IF my yaqrd looked like his I wouldn't chance doing ANYTHING to mess that up
Great video. Always felt intimidated with leveling the lawn. Good step by step. 👍🏻👍🏻
I use an old street sweeper head with just a chain. It works awsome. They give them away. I never believed in the sand thing till i tried it. It works
One thought- make sure you don't undo any natural drainage away from your house.
Smooth is great, especially when cutting, flat is a different thing.
10 mins, 2 quads and 30 tonnes of sand later and the grass looks identical to when he started.
why am I watching this, its so addictive
I did something similar to level topsoil across an area whee I had a ditch culvert installed, then filled in. However, I took one of my 5ft high 4ft wide chain link fence gates off of the fence, ran climbing rope through the hinges, rigged 2x4s tol hold bricks on too for weight, then attached the whole rig to my riding lawn mower. Worked like a charm.
It's Miller time! I got thirsty just watching!
Impressive amount of work. I would love to see the end results.
Possibly the most insane thing I've ever seen on YT.
LMAO
People get down right stupid about there lawn. Thats why I have a yard. I mow it, trim around the house, trees, and mailbox. DONE
I have an inclusive and diverse lawn. I have clover, crab grass, violets, creeping charlie, dandelions, grass. They are all there.
If your that person that's like to have the nicest lawn on the block this Does work Great it also protects the roots from getting burned in summer !
I rigged a broom system on a sand pro. Worked great and put the sand down fast and level. Of course, it was a hydraulic lift and very stiff so the level was easy to achieve. Great video.
LAST YEAR!! you have to do this every year! damn, i'll live with all the bumps
Good idea but you should use TOP SOIL. Should last for years with a touch up ONCE IN A WHILE .... definitely not every year.
Why do you use sand instead of topsoil to level?
Way easier to spread and level sand. Also, the sand will mix with the soil, and give you a better drained soil. It is also easier for the roots to grow into the sandy soil.
Much cheaper than topsoil
@@regularjoe2334 nice, i never thought of that, will be doing this soon
Use this method on Missouri clay soil, and you will have a nice, level, concrete yard in no time at all!
Claycrete? They made `limecrete` set under water thousands of years ago. Romans, Greeks or others, can`t remember which
That yard is gonna cut like a dream when it’s all said and done. Good job man. Hank Hill approved
I admire your commitment, your lawn looks great!
LOL, you see that small yard, and I'm used to 4, 10 & 15 acres
228220616
About 1 cubic yard per 1000...the idea is to fill in the deeper holes and take the sharpness off the high spots..
Then you need a dozer or skid steer not sand lol
15 when the video started. Then another truck showed up.
Great work Connor, this year will be my first year of top dressing, keep the videos coming
Fab job.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that comes up with crazy ideas and then acts them out.
This one works
Connor Ward I love it!
flat earther
Now THAT'S funny brother!
Billville.... No broken concrete here. The concrete is 6 to 7 inches thick and has a rebar mat in it as well.
RBn2 pl
LOL!!!
when you go flat, you don't go back. :)
Would good quality topsoil not be a cheaper and similar alternative?
Not where I live. But then again, I would never use sand on my lawn. It compacts like crazy.
@@yitzakshekelberg2465 in that case you would need to start over again I suppose to level out your lawn and reseed. I'm no lawn expert but that's what I'd do instead. This fella likes throwing money away it seems. I'm a farmers son so I've a fair idea how grass works :)
Why do you use sand instead of a type of fertilized dirt?
3am and I’m watching someone do yard work on my phone. What a time to be alive.
I will soon have to do the same on an uneven acre. 🤷🏽♀️
