      Do you feel guilty for things that bring you joy? I'm for example passionate about makeup and have more makeup then I'll use or need, but since getting into sustainability I feel guilty for these things. I would want to try new things, and think about certain items for months, and still don't give in to buying them even tho I know I'll enjoy them. It's a constant battle. What do I do with it?? I have no clue.

      Great video thanks! I was wondering when you started calling yourself a minimalist? I started minimalism a few months ago, went through my house but I'm still learning what works for my family and I know I'm a long way from where I want to be still. Ha I feel like a minimalist imposter :/

      On a previous video you mentioned choosing more low-maintenance plants, and I'm also a plant lover but looking for those that are easier to care for. Can you tell us which you have?

    • @AshlynneEaton
      @AshlynneEaton  3 года назад +1

      I don’t really! But if you have concerns, maybe try opting for more sustainable makeup brands? 🤍

    • @AshlynneEaton
      @AshlynneEaton  3 года назад +3

      Haha oh my gosh I feel like so many of us can relate to that! In my opinion, if you’re in the process of simplifying, call yourself a minimalist! It’s way more about your mindset and intention than exactly where you’re at in your journey 🤍

    When friends and family ask me what gifts I'd like to receive, I've sometimes asked that the donate to a favorite organization of mine instead. Again, allowing them to show their affection, while redirecting the actual gift into something that is much more meaningful to me. :)

    • @mewpie85
      @mewpie85 3 года назад +1

      Especially if those people are gift givers, too. Maybe stop giving that person an object gift for a while; that could slow down the other person giving back. It’s like Animal Crossing, sometimes people feel the need to give back out of obligation or since they’re touched by it and want to return the favor. But if you don’t give it as much, they probably won’t give much either?

    • @AshlynneEaton

    I love receiving consumables as gifts. My family knows and respects that I do not want gifts at all but if they insist they will give me food items or a bottle of wine etc. Also have received gift certificates for a favorite restaurant. I get more joy out of giving gifts than receiving them. BTW your paintings are very good!

    My goals with minimalism are more peace, less anxiety/stress, saving money and to finally tackle the tasks I've been too busy cleaning to get to. I was a hoarder. Having all that stuff weighed me down so much and I just need to move on. It was hard to go through the stuff as a lot of it striked up bad memories, but that's the main thing that got me to these videos about minimalism. Decluttering has already helped me so much with my mental health alongside therapy. It's like learning to process these things that happened and letting go of the physical reminders went hand in hand. I'm still not done though.

    Would love to see a video on impulse buying as well as how you handle Black Friday. Do you participate in Black Friday or just avoid it all together? • @Katirin89

    I love watching Harry Potter movies in the fall time too. It always reminds me of the time when I excitedly waited for a new movie to come out because if I remember correctly, almost all HP movies came out during November-December.
    By the way, my tip for dealing with impulse buying is that when you're in the shop, ask yourself if you really need that item and think about the purchase decision. Wait at least 15 minutes while going around and shopping what you actually need. When you're about to leave the store, if you have not thought that item even once while shopping for another items, you don't actually need the item you were about to buy because of an impulse. If you think about that item while shopping for your needed items, it means that it might actually have use for you. If you're unsure about it, leave it to the store and if you are thinking about it when you're at home, it's ok to go and buy it.

    To the question how to stay motivated: it’s a journey. Start with a small area and just the obvious things. Eventually go back thru the areas and you will be surprised how many more things you will find - and at some point you will keep going thru the same areas ... so just don’t over do at first ...☺️ (I did the 30 day declutter - where day 1 you eliminate 1 thing, day 2 eliminate 2 things; day 30 eliminate 30 things - I took longer than 30 days but I kept track of the things daily until I was done - I loved it lol )

    I've found that since being out of quarantine (and now being in school online), I want to add in a couple new [offline] hobbies and prioritize what other hobbies I want to step away from. My blog has been on hold for a while (with the exception of two reviews I want to post), and at some point, I may just scrap it all together because of where I'm at in life now. Perhaps you could do a video of the different hobbies you've started and how they've evolved with you? :)

    I ask my family what they want as well. It just makes my life so much easier. Most people that know me know that I adore coffee mugs and scarves so those are always safe gifts for me however, I realized yesterday that I have received 3 candles over the past year and I'm not at all a candle person. I'm still struggling with decluttering.

  • @CM-wh8hn
    @CM-wh8hn 3 года назад

    Experiences as gifts... those are the only gifts I give, and only when I am sharing in the experience so we spend time together, which is the best part of the gift. Also, the experience has to be very special. something we would not ordinarily do. For example, instead of buying holiday gifts, my girlfriends and I got together for a lavish, expensive brunch at the Four Seasons or the Ritz (pre-pandemic). We each paid our own share, but this was a treat for all of us, because normally we could not afford this routinely. Bonus fun, all year long we debate which lavish place we will dine in for the brunch.
    Also, and this is golden advice from a mother, for all you newly married ladies out there, there is one gift you can give your mother-in-law. Let her son treat her to lunch/brunch , just the two of them. I do not need more stuff, But I would love just a few hours a year, to catch up with just my son. I spend lots of time with them as a couple, but rarely with my son alone.
    Also, about candles, most are carcinogens. For decades there has been lots of info out there about their causing cancer (lungs), but the link below is from Stanford University. Precautionary, I use only real soy candles, cotton wicks, as a rare treat, instead of constantly.

    My love language is receiving gifts but I’ve become a minimalist for the last 4 years and have cut down on random gift giving and receiving from friends but I do miss it. But then almost everything I get I know I’ll declutter it. I’m referring to the candle, picture frame, around $5 type gift where you can’t really ask for an experience or something that would cost more. I’ve started trying to use the item (like mug or something) for at least a little while.

    I know I won't make myself many friends by saying this but you don't need to put yourself in a box with those personality type things, since they are not psychologically /scientifically proven and personality is way too complex to be classified like this... Do it for fun but know that your personality is always changing, never fixed and that that is a good thing and you can learn! I've done the Myers Briggs test 4 times the last 4 years and it said something else everytime and everytime I felt like yeah this is me. Because I change! We all change. I know these tests are super fun but please don't take them too seriously. OK bye...

    If anyone asks what kind of gift I want, I ask for a personalized card (just a reg card with a simple msg). If they really insist, I suggest a coffee card (Tim Hortons/ Starbucks coffee shops, etc.) Those I def use because I'm addicted to caffeine.

    My partner and I have been moving a lot the last few years and are now in the process of moving into a new place for a at least a few years and want to start minimalism. What would be the things to keep in mind to not go overboard with new furniture/decor/ideas - it sure can be overwhelming.

      Honestly that hugely depends on what is important to you and what you would use! Encouragement that would be to focus on key, versatile pieces that you’ll get a lot of use from 🤍

    I love the sweater you are wearing, but online it looks more yellow than rust color. How is it in person, more like your video or like it is online? I am so torn.

    i've noticed that i frequently find myself buying things in order to achieve a certain minimalistic aesthetics i see on pinterest or instagram.
