      Love you both. Good collaboration! I have been on my minimalist journey for a few months and I definitely made the mistake of continuing to buy unintentionally. I finally have a hold on that, but living in a consumerist society makes it difficult! Thanks! 💕

    My mistake is telling family and friends that I’m going more minimal. Everyone feels the need to try to talk me out of it. Two of my children said thank you though. I’m saving them the time and energy of someday having to clean up my things. I like the term “practical minimalism”. I’m going to use that from now on. Thanks!

      My mom recently passed not even a month ago.. we are currently going through all of her stuff. Things that haven't been opened...clothes with tags on them...so many cards that have nothing written in them and were going to be a someday card. So so many. So so much stuff. I actually live with my parents so trying to figure out what to keep and what not to has been super difficult.

    • @nancymillet9637
      @nancymillet9637 3 года назад

      @@betsysmith2685 I’m sure it’s not easy. I’m try to save my kids from having to decide what to keep and what to let go. I’m middle aged (I think) and I don’t want to keep dealing with the same stuff over and over. I wish you the best Betsy. Take your time and try to enjoy some of the process. I’m sorry for the loss of your mom.

    I'm so glad you mentioned wanting to declutter your husband's belongings for him! It's such an impulse for me to want to go through my boyfriend's clothing and narrow it down for him but I think it's so important to remember that it's not my place to make those choices for him. I find the biggest problem with him decluttering is not having the time or energy after he's done work to go through his stuff. Loved the video, thanks Ashlynne!

    I’m definitely diving into minimalism! My husband currently already is a minimalist naturally, it’s definitely myself that needs to get into it. I’m at a point in my life where I just want things more simple and less complicated. The amount of “stuff” I thought I needed to fill a void, makes me sad. It’s time for it to go. I found that even when I slightly mentioned minimalism to someone who was not open to the idea (I didn't know that at the time), the whole concept was shot down, critiqued and ridiculed. For myself, I enjoy sharing with other minimalist (or those who have decluttered their life) on youtube. Everyone in this community is very encouraging and I am able to share things that have helped me and gather so many, many ideas from everyone else no matter what stage of minimalism they are in! I love your videos and I always look forward to each one!! :)

    SLIGHTLY off the topic of this video but... in light of not wanting to keep decluttering and then repurchasing things I’ve been trying to declutter my heaps of clothing from fast fashion brands and buy more intentionally as my shape has changed from having children. Last night I watched a documentary about fast fashion and it really hit home even more! I know you talk about it here and there in different videos but I would LOVE a video with maybe a list of your favorite ethically made sustainable brands that I could check out! (: I’m overwhelmed by trying to find them.

    I was what you call a hoarder for so long. Always saving things because maybe I might needed it later whether it was for creative purposes or just for use. Since decluttering things my mind has been so much more clear. I am still progressing on this journey to minimalism but it is so much fun. It has helped me realize I don't need a lot of stuff to live happy, it gives you a whole new perspective in life. Good luck to everyone out there! 😊

    First time viewer from Sarah's page! Hello! I love Minimalism, but it is so hard. I'm from a hugely consumerism background and I also get super attached even when I never wear or use items. But I have changed my buying habits, because I hate the damage fast fashion does. Starting slow, also 12 weeks pregnant and so excited to buy new things but I want to be responsible and ethical with my purchasing.

  • @brookealexander2584
    @brookealexander2584 4 года назад +1

    I loved this video so much!!! I think one of the biggest mistakes I made in the beginning of my minimalism journey was purchasing more. I kept seeing these ideas and thinking I can't practice minimalism until I own all ethical clothing or until I have my dream room, all while holding onto everything I already had, which actually made everything harder to declutter through.
    Another great video as always!!!

    • @AshlynneEaton
      @AshlynneEaton  4 года назад +1

      Love this perspective Brooke, but don’t let yourself fall into believing that! 🤍 There is no such thing as the perfect minimalist, and if you keep from practicing minimalism until you’ve “arrived”, you’ll never get there! (Or at least I’m not there yet!) 😅 I think minimalism is far more about embracing that mindset of simplicity than anything else and gradually working towards any goals you have! Minimalism is a journey for all of us, and it definitely sounds like you’re on it!! 🥰

    i made the exact same mistake as you by decluttering some of my boyfriend's stuff like old papers, junk and clothes. by the time he got home from work, there was a big trash bag at the front door with all his stuff i wanted to get rid of. he was so pissed!!! nowadays i just try to help him and let him make the final decisions on what to keep/get rid of. this works so well for us.
    i also feel ashamed of what i did then, but i definitely learned from it!

    I took ALL the books i had that I didn't use anymore (and were available on Kindle if i wanted them again in the future) including cooking/baking books to the charity shop (if their recipes were online). I did it mainly because I don't live on my own where i have space to store them. If i did have my own flat i would have kept them and could have stored them at my parents house in the short term. When i left London and returned home to support my parents through Covid in March, my faith grew hugely and I began reading the Bible again every day. One day I looked for a different Bible translation i needed and realised all Bibles were gone. I think your living situation can be a huge trigger to minimise, especially living in a city like London where most single people can't afford to live alone or buy their own place. The result is that you don't have enough space. I do find living with less is incredibly calming, i'm also more productive in my living space and generally much happier. But that was a lesson learn for me.

    Omggg! Sooo true, impulse buying is the worst. I almost did this at Trader Joe's last night when I did a social distanced meet up with a friend there. They had to get some items, and I picked up a few items that I didn't necessarily need but just picked up coz I should get something coz my friend did. Literally caught it, and put everything back. I know I shouldn't do that during Covid but it was so freeing knowing I didn't buy the items. They were all food items but even with food, if one doesn't need it, why buy it. Feeding the consumerist mindset in society.

    I still watch these minimilist videos and find them facinating although i finally finished and became a true minimilist in 2018, its a long complicated story of how i embarked on my journey of minimilism, and i dont't want to bore youtube readers outlaying all the processes i went through ,but i note of interest is that i first came across minimilism in 1961!! It hapowned when i had very bad asthma and the specialist doctor may have thought that i was alergic to household dust so he said to my mother just take everything out of my bedroom right down to the bare essentials, maybe a chair etc, i did harbour my mothers books and they did collect dust so they where cleared all out, i on occasions i look back then out of historical facination, and now i have virtually nothing ,just what i absolutely need and feel just great!!

    I think that having a plan sounds great. But so many things to eliminate come to mind, as I declutter. Eventually, I think I will do room by room.
    The most satisfying and Declutter is when you find someone who could really use the item that you haven’t been using

    • @AshlynneEaton
      @AshlynneEaton  3 года назад

      Decluttering by room definitely is helpful, but my personal favorite strategy is to declutter by area/kind. Decluttering all like items at once can really make it easier!! 🤍

  • @cynthia3207
    @cynthia3207 4 года назад

    I sometimes have the urge to 'help' my significant other with decluttering, I believe this is because I find it much easier to get rid of someone else's stuff that I think they don't need/wear/use than to get rid of my own stuff that I kinda feel attached to.

    • @AshlynneEaton
      @AshlynneEaton  3 года назад

      Definitely get that temptation! But it’s so important that we do the hard work of decluttering ourselves, and we can’t make that decisions or others 🤍

  • @priscillajimenez27
    @priscillajimenez27 4 года назад

    I grew up with my mom getting rid of my stuff without my consent even as a young adult; so in a way it seemed normal to invade someone's space if you have good intentions. But I had to rewire my brain and realize my mom wasn't right in doing that when I became an adult. So now I just converse about my lifestyle and just put it out there for anyone who is interested.

      Good makes me want to support her even more. Abortion is murder. A child within your body is not your body.

      Marla James abortion is healthcare whether you like it or not. You have zero right to tell someone else what they should or shouldn’t do with their body. It’s cool if you personally wouldn’t get an abortion but don’t shove your beliefs down others. That’s not your place.

    I may never be able to call myself a minimalist, but I have learned some good tips, and it is nice to know that minimalism doesn't look the same for everyone. I can keep my book collection, and declutter in other areas. Not all minimalism looks like a bare room with a futon and a plant.
    Looks like you got your wish to collab with Sarah Therese lol.

    • @AshlynneEaton
      @AshlynneEaton  3 года назад +1

      Absolutely!! You can definitely be minimal in some areas but not in others. Just use it as a tool in areas where you want to simplify!
      And yeah, I had so much fun collabing with her! 🤍

    Hi! I've recently found your chanel and I like it a lot as well as I like you! I myself am not a minimalist but I have a little bit similar approach to life, I declutter regularly and I'm trying to buy intentionally. And I want my things to have a home as you say :) I would be really interested in videos where the mental work during decluttering spesific spot is made visible. Often almost the whole thing is filmed fast forwarded as I've been enjoying minimalism related content in youtube. How to decide if you still need something or not. How to evaluate the actual "risk" that you will need to re-purchase that item later and waste money if you get rid of it now. That kind of stuff.. Thank you for your chanel and greetings from Finland :)

    I would add decluttering or keeping things just because some minimalist on social media said so. I think those "things to declutter" lists are meant to be suggestions, not rules. Everyone has a different lifestyle, so one person's essential is useless to another and vice versa.
