    If you've seen our latest video on Three Drills To Shallow Your Downswing, • GOLF: Three Drills To ... this was one within those three. But the drill is so good that we wanted to make sure we did a separate video. If you set this station up properly, it HAS to work.
    I put an alignment rod in the ground so that the only way for you to miss the stick is if the club head is approaching the ball from the inside. If you're someone who comes too far over the top, you're going to run into the stick. I've also got it setup in a position where it doesn't allow me to come into the ball very vertically. That works the angle of attack and widens out the bottom of your arc - you won’t come into the ball so super narrow. It’s a common fundamental of really good ball striking. So, this drill is a two-for-one.
    To set this station up, I take my club and measure roughly two grip lengths behind the golf ball. This is where I’ll position the stick. I have the stick angled in the ground about a grip and a half in the air. From the down the line perspective, I'm setting up the edge of the stick about halfway between the golf ball and my foot or about equal distance between my ball target line and my foot.
    When doing this drill, I feel distinctly - and I want you to feel - club head and shaft. You're not so much feeling body motions. I feel like the club head is working on a wider circle so my arms or hands are staying away from my body and not getting real narrow. I really feel the club head working low to the ground and I also have a sense that the club head is more inside my hands and normal.
    You are not setting this up, putting a golf ball in and swinging at 100% speed right away. You’re probably swinging at a tee. I'll put a tee in the ground and I'm going to clip the tee with a swing that's super short and slow. Your only intention and priority is missing the stick during the downswing.
    From there, I'm probably going to hit short chip shots like a hundred yards at most just to feel the club head working underneath and shallow. I might hit balls like that for like a week before I'm going into half three quarter full swings. The point of this is supposed to be overly shallow. You don't need to hit these perfectly.

    Best drill in golf period. I've mentioned this before when you did your Draw video, but I now use this drill at the range and you could fix 90% of all range golf swings with this one drill. I've helped a few players at the range with this by placing one of their clubs through the holes of the ball basket and they stand there with their brain hurting trying to figure out how to now hit the ball - they're dumbfounded that it is possible. It forces their brain to almost have a seizure because their old swing won't work - but since they have a brain that does a trillion calcs per second, they know it must be possible but they are in shock that they simply no longer can do everything they have been doing for 30 years. I should have filmed a few of these because it is truly shocking the disbelief that happens to someone's brain when a simple stick is put in the way - like watching someone re-learn how to walk.

    I've been struggling with shallowing for a long time and this drill did the trick. Being somewhat impatient to achieve some level of improvement I put my own little twist on it. I started out with the set up in my garage but then took a few swings imagining there was a stick. It worked. Right away you could feel the hands getting ahead of the clubhead with the irons and it promotes a turn on the downswing to square the clubface. With the driver I was getting a bit of an overdraw as the clubhead is coming in a bit closed relative to my path. Going to play around with swing a bit to see if swinging out a bit more is a better solution than trying to lay off closing the face a bit. Solution will likely be a bit of both! Thanks a million....you get 10% of all future career winnings...LOL

    Great drill Eric! Loved the feel this created right away although I have been working on some other shallowing drills (chair drill / bucket drill). I was so impressed with the ball striking with 8 iron on the range, I moved up to the driver a bit too soon perhaps. I am a bit steeper with the driver and longer backswing. Snapped the shaft on a full swing when it nicked the end of the alignment rod. I'm overdue for a new driver anyway :). To be fair your video did suggest using an old club! I have the embarrassing moment video if you are looking for a warning to accompany the video lol.

    Eric, I love this drill. I do it at home all the time. I use an Optishot to practice. The problem is, at times with this drill, the Optishot still tells me I'm outside/in. That means that I'm kicking the club across the line at the bottom before impact, even though I'm coming in super shallow. It's something I really struggle with.

    It works. Bit frustrating at first, I found trying to hit the ball on the lower right part of the ball helped me with this drill. I found it easier to do with 7 or 8 iron but difficult to do with driver, so I’m still a work in progress. Like the flight of the ball and right to left action I get. Also solid contact with a shallow divot with an inside out path. Hey Eric. Currently trying this and works a treat. Only issue is this doesn't also correct my early steep late shallow slide and poor rotation fudge. Any additional props/tips to get the 3 in 1 of good rotation and shallow pieces together ?!

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  3 года назад

      Hey Rohit!
      Great point--this can help with the end goal of net shallow but doesn't necessarily fix the early steep, late shallow move.
      I would start by checking the top of backswing motion.
      You are either steep early due to where you are at the top OR how you start down.
      Need to see where you are to give any more details or I'd be guessing too much...But a wall drill could help.
      Setup with a wall a few feet behind you. Get the club head to the wall at top of backswing. Ride club down wall to start. No way to be steep early with that!
      Not easy and will take time but it works!

    • @rohitpratap4174
      @rohitpratap4174 3 года назад +1

      Awesome Eric. I can sort of ride down the wall with an excessive tilt but need to incorporate early lead shoulder down and around (as you instructed) at the same time as hinge release to keep clubhead on wall (seem like opposite direction forces) I think? Then getting the hands low also encourages me to turn better through it. Will keep at it. Thanks man!

    Hi could this drill make you cast the club? And to achieve a ball turf strike is it best to release the angle late?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  2 года назад

      Hi Marcus!
      Casting the club, which releases your wrist angles, would make you swing more over the top/out to in (which we do not want with this station!) and would move your low point too far behind the ball. Retaining those wrist angles longer will help you move your low point more forward for ball first, ground second contact.
      You may enjoy some further details on this subject in the video below!

    I’m trying to overcome the over the top swing . I have used the inside approach training aid . Tried your setup on the range today like the simple setup hit about 150 balls then tried without and seemed to slowly slip back into the old path . Two questions 1st is your drill equivalent to the inside approach or better . 2nd was thinking to just hit with the drill only for couple weeks maybe 275 balls then putt , rather then test my swing each day which might make me take little steps back . What are your thoughts.

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  9 месяцев назад

      Hey!
      1. Yes very similar to inside approach---I used to use that one a lot as well!
      2. I like it. I would plan to hit 20-30 balls as close to daily with this as possible for an entire year. I would be shocked if it didnt become your normal by then.
      Then keep hitting with it for next 10-20 years as maintenance! No end date....just keep doing and improving!

    95% of the time I am able to do full swings without touching the stick with all my clubs including drivers which implies that I am shallowing enough but I am still slicing?
