  • This video highlights my repair of the rear door latches on my 1998 Ford Ranger Splash Extended Cab Flair Side 3.0L V6 2wd Automatic. If you own a Ford Ranger with rear doors, then you've probably experienced this issue. If you haven't, don't worry, it's coming.
I detail a pretty cool repair solution utilizing an inexpensive repair kit that you can find on Amazon, like I did, or even at your local box auto parts store. A simple search on Google will yield a myriad of results for prices and locations.

You should not take the cable out of the latch. The latches are manufactured with the cable installed. That little ball at the end was not made to be removed from the latch. Remove the other end of the cable from the handle to install new sleeves.

Drilling out rivets is a true PITA. It's especially fun to replace the power window actuators. They have very large rivets fastening them, two of which go thru the glass holding it to the actuator arm. What a mess and a frustrating challenge. Thanx Ford!!

My only thought is to ensure the cable isn’t too tight which means the latch won’t close. That or lubricate the mechanism to ensure free movement to close.

If the sleeves are difficult to slide over the cable, drill the sleeves to 13/64". The will slide on much easier, without cutting back the sheath.

The videos I have seen about these ridiculous door latches are all incorrect or partially correct. The plastic sleeves that fit on the ends of the door latch cables disintegrate. This is on my 2006 ford ranger. It has an upper and a lower latch on the rear doors. (extended cab). New latches for this thing cost a hundred dollars each. But new metal sleeves to repair the cables can be bought for 10 dollars. The rear door handles must be removed. First punch the center out of the rivets holding them in place then drill the rivets out. Remove the cables from the handles by sliding the plastic sliders back. Then remove the top and front latches. The cables on the latches must not and cannot be removed. Make enough slack in the cable to install the new sleeves on the latches. This must be done first as you cannot get the cables balls out of the latches. Then install the new sleeves on the door handle cables. There are plastic sliders on the handles that hold the handle cables in place. Then use long nose pliers to install the cables in the door handles. You can use new rivets to reinstall the handles but a short sheet metal screw is better.

Knock the center pins back out of the rivets first!!! Then drill them out.
