One of the things I love about your exit story is how things organically unfolded. I think the decisions you made were critical that I myself didn't make which is 1) Follwing your passion for salsa dancing. (I didn't even know myself well enough to know what I was passionate about) and 2)Choosing your relationship over the ICOC. Many of us were so fearful due to the indoctrination we missed out on good relationship opportunities). It's a beautiful story and one that brings a smile to my face.😊

One thing I admire about your story is that you are not angry bitter or resentful and that you still show love to others in the ICOC.

M.A., just found your channel and just finished watching all of your videos. My wife and I left the ICOC in the beginning of 2020 after 20 years of membership. Like you, we were both recruited when we were in college. So much of what you described in this video and your recruitment video hit home and I can relate to. I’m very much looking forward to your upcoming videos and I’m glad you’re out, still connected to God, and enjoying life with your beautiful family!

Thanks for making this video and love your love story with your wife! I left ICOC in 2000 and thank God I got out! I joined them because of a schoolmate introduced to me that time and left when I realised it's not what I wanted with the things they did to me and others sisters brothers there. I'm now attending a baptist church and still hesitating to become member. ICOC really caused a lot of pains to a lot of people (internally & externally) so I pray that God will rescue those who are still being controlled by them. God bless us!

its an amazing story to hear, honestly inspiring. There's always a lot of preaching about the 'holy spirit' but for some reason its usually other people trying to make the decisions for you. There's a high level of fear of people that is confused for fear of God in the church. Its refreshing to see someone who is at peace with their choice to leave, and is not bitter towards other members. Big congrats to you man. All the best to you and your family!

I had similar story with you, but different ending.
I also had relationship outside the ICOC.
I'm a faithful member and I want the relationship to be inline with what God wants.
Long story short, I manage to bring her to study the Bible and ultimately she was baptized and also become member of ICOC. And even her parents also got baptized.
But it's not the end of the story, it's where the real problem arises.
As you know, as a couple inside ICOC, they set us up to a mentor/leader. So we had personal mentor for each of us (who's from single ministry), and relationship mentor (who's a couple from married ministry) They become a third party inside the relationship that's controlling our relationship. Everything we planned or wanted to do, we must report and ask for advice and permission. They became controlling, even beyond our biological parents.
When we had an argument or relationship conflict, what hurts me the most is our mentors chooses to always stand up and defend my gf point of view, due to her being a newer/baby disciple. Where in contrary, I'm an old disciple (I was a 10 years old disciple by then).
It was in fact, a long problem inside our Church that they always boast about numbers, always specialize and nurture newer members and neglect the older members. Many older members already critizice this matter. I'm not expecting this problem will get mixed up with my relationship.
So, it ultimately complicate the already complicated struggle of relationship.
I basically became an outsider inside my own personal romantic relationship, and it hurts me so much.
And then I choose to leave ICOC. It was heartbreaking to lose my first love and my long years friends inside ICOC in one swoop.

The Atlanta church didn’t play! I visited from Denver and wore a nice summer dress. One of the sisters came into the room where I was staying holding a full length sweater telling me that my dress would make the brothers struggle with purity.

Once again, very well done. I will say that although I'm grateful for the progressive nature of that ministry. The Borg like group think was still there amongst the congregation because of the deep programming for most of us who had been there for years. They couldn't accept the truth of others being Christians because of that programming and out of fear of what would happen if they went against what they probably truly believed. Living in fear of "getting in trouble" was so unnatural. I personally couldn't take feeling like that and having more fear of peoples reactions than of God Himself.

Beautiful story and great video. I'm glad you didn't allow the legalistic views of others to cut you off from the obvious blessing you found in your wife. For every story like yours, many people stay and allow themselves to be robbed of the true blessings of God. I cringe when you share about what would have been an abusive breaking session in the making for your wife, had you remained in that ministry. I have been part of so many of those over the years and they are very damaging psychologically and spiritually. I have not been part of the ICOC since 2005 and I have been attending an local church of Christ in Riverside County. I recently stumbled upon your videos after hearing and interview you had on Losing My Religion. I was converted in the then Berkeley Church of Christ in 1984. It was later reconstructed by Kip McKean in 1987 and later became the San Francisco Church of Christ. In retrospect, that is when the real troubles really began in retrospect. I find it sobering that so many of the things you shared are so similar to my experiences even though we were in totally different areas geographically. You have a powerful way with words. Keep sharing.

‘Preciate that, DJ! It’s amazing to me how so many of our stories are consistent, not just across regions and countries, but time periods as well. I’ve heard stories of folks who have joined and left AFTER my exit, but they still sound similar. Same with people who joined before me.

Good afternoon brother. I watched this video several times. While I agree it's very healthy and biblical to use wisdom and seek advice from godly people esp with emotional concerns. I agree with the idea of having sisters help her. This is cool and very healthy . Brother you went after advice your prayed you did the best you can to protect your now wife. I am not God but you two had a mutual interest and your both were seeking God first I'm your endeavor. It's obvious. People have different opinions. You both did your part. If you both wanted to expand your relationship you don't need to apologize. If you knew in your heart that it wasn't a good decision one of you would have ended the relationship. You both have godly convictions. The elders and the leaders don't have to agree w oth you. That is their opinion. If they disagree and your conscience is clear before God you don't need to apologize but help her be the best for God. Yes women help women in certain areas more effectively you both have free will. You are two disciples of Jesus and you can't allow an opinion to hold you back. You two are married and I encourage you to stick with a healthy and godly congregation.

I appreciate your video. I'm an ex-ICOC'er (Thank God!). My wife and I left after the Kriete letter in 2003. I guess since in your video you are referring to 2013, nothing had changed, like we all heard those leaders say it would. Anyhow, my wife and I came into the ICOC already married. I must admit I don't think I would have been able to do it as a single guy. This is not a knock of you personally, but the singles always had some weird ass rules. I applaud you more for enduring. What a cult.

This is very, very timely to hear. I had been praying for God to show me path... which way to go, because I was "struggling" with leaving the church to heal from trauma within the icoc and letting go of my church family.
You did not bash the icoc, and still kept it real.
Thank you so much! God bless your family.

@@SmooveCosplaya One thing, that is on my mind is that I love my women's midweek video chat. Yet, I will be announcing to them that I will not be coming back. I feel sad about that and yet relieved. Does that make sense? They know that I have been pivoting back and forth with this decision, and they do understand. It's just saying that I'm leaving officially that causes me subtle grief.

That was God. He brought you two together. You were faithful to Him,
happy to be a disciple of Christ and growing. And God was preparing your wife to do exactly the same. It was meant to be. That Organization puts God in a box. Ya'll were grown adults and were capable of knowing when you were ready. I went in married. My husband and I were BT leaders, I learned "the word" there and made many good friends.
I will never forget the goodness that I experienced, But it all started changing and becoming too controlling. Special contribution and the deceitfulness of where the money was going was out of control. Favoritism rampant, Judging by outside appearances concerning who would lead (for ex; being overweight in there eyes) even if they were more experienced and had been there longer, others would be chosen because they looked the part. We were too off to ourselves as an organization. We made people jump through hoops to be a part of this Organization. Long story short I cried and cried for God to release me from this Church. So when the HK letter came out that was my answer, this was it and I was gone. My husband thought I was out of my mind and stayed in for 3 more months, but after a while realized some things himself and then finally read the letter (he wouldn't even read it at first) Anyway onward and
upward as we continue to grow in our faith learning so much more than we knew before being kept on lockdown like we were babies lol! Your love is real. Proud of you.

I still love my ICOC Family like Family, even though some don't feel the same way. I had years with some before ICOC. After 10 years in 2004 I left with my wife and kids, the War did affect me, weakened me, but I was still spiritually focused to stay on track. Those in the SDO Church Military side leaders were far off worse than me. Anyways, I still see many as beloved Family to me. Shout out to Brian and Stephanie, Rick(BF) and Stephanie, Manny (Bon-Bon), David and Charlotte, Carlos and Nancy, Bud and Diane, Darren M., Dennis M., Amiel M., Linda BTL, Raymond and Tanisha, to name a few. There are many more, but haven't seen any of them for 18 years now. I still pray to God everyday, read my Bible from time to time, just not like the way when I was with ICOC. I still strive to be better, help others and give the Glory to God. I feel you Brother, I appreciate you sharing your life experiences here. Keep those videos coming!!! "IJNWP, Amen!".

Thank you for sharing, I think it takes courage to share one's personal story of their experience in a destructive cult/organization. Although I was never in a cult, I was spiritually abused from a person 13 years older than me when I was 24. It went on for 6 years and kind on/off the last two years that I knew her. I recall that finally it was time to end our friendship and not associate with her. I told her over the phone and soon after that, I felt a huge relief, it was assume.

Just as you mentioned. They will say , you know there are saved brothers and sister out there in other churches. But practically they will fail completely to practice. My husband and my self we helped sister to go through that , still she did get married for man from other Church. Because we wer e still leading this smal Church in East Europe. We resign few years ago. And moment when USA guys from ICOC came . They told them to leave Church. They demonised many sisters and brothers who dared to asked questions, and dare to be just righteous and putting Christ like relationship in priority, asking them to love our people, not to run us like company. They literally destroyed familly. Lied about what was going on. I left in May. My husband and 15 of us moved from ICOC this summer. We had familly , relationships. They didn't came for that. They saying they came to baptise people, not having relationship. And now new one. The lady wife is one who told that she will preach, and teach this community.. God help to those who stay behind. God didnt removed lamp stand first time after Henry Kreete letter. But because they didn't repent. They desired for old style how was before. Now most of leaders are worst . Because they knew how wrong was, and how much they hurt people. And to allow again same thing ? God cant be fulled. And He can not be mocked.

How ICOC could think they were the true church when the Bible says the true people of israel are God's chosen people is beyond me. This is why God is referred to as "The God of Israel" or the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
