The ICOC: Hard to join, easy to leave?

  • While I was still a member, a disciple once told me that the ICOC isn't a cult because "Cults are easy to join, but hard to leave. We're hard to join, but easy to leave." That made sense to me back then, but now, not so much.

I was going to college in the evening and worked during the day...i wasnt outright told to stop going to school, but it was implied that i wasnt putting the kingdom first. Yes I left, but carried their mindset and thinking with me for 25+years so no, they were not easy to leave. And why so hard to join? I dont recall anyone coming to jesus in the NT having to bend over backwards to be in his presence. They made it seem discipleship was hard to do and easy to loose if you weren't carefully following it. 🤷🏾‍♀️

My first time listening to you. I was a member from October 1994-January 1995. I was later save in March 1995. I hope you have come to know Christ (I don’t know you’re whole story). They are definitely a cult! The worst sin of the ICOC is many who leave become bitter towards God.

I left the ICOC because of the Emotional and Mental Abuse that they inflicted on me and not accepting that I have a mental illness to which I also have PTSD during my time in the ICOC for 17 years. I also saw who they really are. Not to say anything good or bad about them, but I saw who they really are. By the grace of God, after they put me through too many things like being bullied by them and a plethora of other things like them weaponizing my fear of loss, I tenured my letter of resignation to them on Facebook three years ago in November. All of the people I associated myself with are either trying to get me to return because I have a few friends or they don't speak to me anymore and they're in a Spiritual Chokehold.

@@crossing3790 if God is truly their foundation for their church which is not the truth in this case.

I feel so sorry for what you have experienced; I can totally relate. I pray that God will heal you and show you his grace, because God's love is more than a specific church; the church of Christians will be filled with joy and love instead of fear, because of his love, we can do better! God loves you so much, and I am so glad you got out of there!

Same thing happened with me . I have narcolepsy a sleep disorder. Started to hate myself bc I had limited energy and they weren’t trying to allow me to get time to take care of myself and medical
Needs. I left confused why would god create me this way knowing my disability would it’d make it hard to make it to all their meetings “ as a disciple should “
I’ve voiced over and over how I was struggling to have energy to clean my home and cook. One time I was exhausted after work and I showed up to midweek., I was so tired and wanted to go home, but I knew if I wasn’t there, it would be an issue. I got tired and In general, it was just hard to be social at that time. Rather than checking up on me a lot of the older women during midweek made sly comments on how I seemed non-rejoiceful snd disengaged. No, it was raining. And I had to walk part of the way to get there. I was told it was better I’ve had I just stayed home. But I stayed home. Already knew I would’ve been scolded I’ve not been there.
Nobody knew the extremity of what narcolepsy can do to you . at the time I also was given my medicine by my doctor because it has to be approved . This medicine wasn’t approved until a day after I left for good. I was like God- why didn’t I get this medicine sooner? I would’ve been able to be a better person in the kingdom.. it though I’m happy I’m getting good sleep at night and I’m at peace during the day. I love them and I wish them well but I wish the evangelist and his wife were more compassionate- knowing that I’m not willfully being tired - I’m just weak and Still could’ve served in what I was good at. When I went through restoration, he isolated me from my friends. And said I was not a Christian because I couldn’t make it across town To join house. Note I don’t drive.
I have meltdowns about every other day . Me leaving with a fight or flight response. 😂😢
