For decades, I wore Sperry Top Siders in brown almost every day from Spring to Fall. No socks, of course. I wore them to Walt Disney World for an entire week without discomfort. The key to success in wearing boat shoes is to NEVER wear new ones for more than a couple of hours at a stretch until they're "broken in" to the shape of your feet. For this reason, I often had three identical pair in my closet: one new pair I was slowly breaking in, one pair that were broken in and not looking "well worn", and one pair that were broken in that looked very worn that I'd use when I paint. Painting while wearing boat shoes is great, since they are non-slip and it's usually fairly easy to clean drops of paint off your ankles. When you step on paint drops, the flat bottom squishes the paint flat, allowing it to dry quickly. If you paint in sneakers, the aggressive tread design holds the paint and you end up tracking it from place to place.
Great video! I’m from a northeastern port town, and many of us wear topsiders all year round. No socks in spring/summer, and then wool socks in the fall and winter. Our Dad’s and Uncles wore them with everything shy of a suit. Paired with a matching braided belt you look squared away in most situations. Your take on these classics is spot on! Love the content.
Been wearing boat shoes/sperrys since the early 2010s. That was back in my college days, been hooked ever since. I own six pairs of sperrys and never wear them with socks. Love the feel of leather on my bare toes. Thanks Antonio. All guys should wear boat shoes.
i MISS Dexter, loved my loafers. bought my last pair in late 2001 had them till about 2011. the insole was worn out and they were showing their age. it was a travesty learning the brand was gone. i've heard rumblings about the shoe being reintroduced by cobblers in ME. haven't heard any updates in a year or more but it would be awesome to see them again!
Great video! I appreciate the way you bring out the history in your videos. I didn't embrace the preppy aesthetic back in the 80s, but I bought my first ever pair of Sperry Top Siders last summer and they are becoming one my my go-to shoes for causal, pool/beach wear. Straighten out your boy Aaron! Seriously, y'all should do a meet up in Atlanta and maybe even bring in Jeff the Style OG.
Love this type of videos when you talk about the history behind it. I currently own two pairs of boat shoes, love them during summer time, I wear them with no-show socks.
3:09 i bought this exact pair because of this very video. I never knew about thursdays and i'm glad to have come accross this. I love wearing them! Stylish, comfortable and durable. Love from the Philippines!
I have a pair of _"Boat Shoes"_ and they are comfortable and when walking on gravel, one doesn't really notice it! My are the same colour with three pairs of eyes and original laces! Also they are *Goodyear Welted* as there is stitching between the sole and upper! I would highly recommend them, for everyday _"after work"_ casual with a polo-shirt and jeans!
I learned a lot of things being in the Navy, and our influence on fashion was of course part of that. Been wearing Sperry topsiders since as my default summer shoe. Never wore it with socks and my wife was definitely not happy about that, so make sure to have at least two pairs you can rotate out on. And of course, some deodorizer lol
I remember when I was a kid/teen in the 80's in Mexico City the Sperry top siders were very popular with Polo Ralph Lauren Polo shirts, shirts and pullover sweaters, all roll up sleeves and pop up collars, with chinos or denim like Guess jeans with leather in the back above the back pockets, and Ray-Ban wayfarer sunglasses or Top Gun aviators. Wearing Polo Green fragrance or Drakkar Noir.
Fantastic shoe. For those of us in tropical climates and around water, these are a must have. I have worn them since I was in my teens (a long time ago)👍🏻
I love this story behind it! Also I've been thinking about boat shoes, about incorporating them into my wardrobe and this video came out at the perfect time❤
perfect timing! I just recently re-discovered my Sperrys from my highschool days, and turns out they were in great condition (minus a little molding inside bc I never wore socks with it *oops* ). so I cleaned, balmed, polished it, and voila! they're perfect for business casual looks! one thing though: trying to tie these shoelaces are a PAIN. I kinda regret untying them while cleaning. they're very thick and doesn't fold easily like normal laces. they can't comfortably be tucked in either. I just wished I knew how the factory people managed to tie them so perfectly.
I only wear socks with mine if I'm flying. I grew up in Florida in the 70s and 80s going fishing all the time. We all wore boat shoes. I mostly had canvas ones since I was young and growing. Dad and the other adults all had leather.
I discovered Mephistopheles Hurrikan boat shoes almost everyday. Often on boats with salt water washing on deck. I get them resoled by Mephisto about every years. I get 3 resoles out of a set of leather uppers. (10 years). I’m on my third pair.
South Carolina native here, specifically from downtown Charleston born in the early 70's & yes growing up in the 80's & even still today when-ever I go home to visit family, Sperry & Sebago boat shoe's are on people's feet all over town. It's like the signature shoe of the city for everyone regardless of ethnicity. It's crazy because I was not really a fan of them until I saw a classmate with a pair of Gold Cup Sperry Top Siders on in Junior High along with another popular brand of clothing a lot of Carolinians wear called Duck Head. I remember asking for a pair for Christmas back then BUT I guess they were too pricey & mom said no BUT as soon as I was grown & on my own, I remember the first time I bought myself a pair of Sperry Gold Cup Top Siders while on assignment in Savannah Georgia, I actually bought 2 pairs that day, still have one of them. I've been a huge fan of Sperry boat shoes for over 30 years now & I have probably as many pairs of them as these sneakerhead people have Jordan's. Where I am going & what I am doing that day is how I make the decision as to whether or not to wear socks, they are some of the best shoes I have ever owned & i'm gonna have it in my will to have a pair of Top Siders on my feet when I am gone....
Wore Sperry Dark Brown top siders in middle school, and high school, in the 80s. Wore them on weekends when I served in the Marines. I went them now, in various colors today. If you aren’t wearing Sperry top siders, you ain’t s….special 😊
Boat Shoes are the Best!!! Thank you, Antonio, for doing a video on this versatile footwear. It's a staple in my wardrobe, fits the Florida lifestyle!!
Excellent advice. Boat shoes are a worthy investment as they only improve with age and they'll never be out of style... unless of course you live in Portland, Oregon, which means socks and sandals are your daily drivers.
About 15 or so years ago, Sperry made a shoe called the "Waterline". They were a little bit clunky, but the sole had unbelievable grip. I put them to the test several times when I visited Acadia Natl. Park in Maine. The rocky coastline could be treacherous, especially when wet. I did a lot of photography on my trips there, and never worried about slipping into an angry sea. Sperry knows what they're doing when it comes to a wet environment.
Great video Antoinio. I've been looking at the Sperry gold cup topsiders and I searched your channel last week to see if you had anything and here we are,
Thank you for the great history lesson today! I have a pair of canvas boat shoes that I reserve for occasions by the water. Many don't consider them stylish today, but they are far better looking than my nasty feet in sandals!
The Thursday Boot version with a dark sole and laces that don't require tieing are really a camp moc which is a much better look and should be adopted by any man once they are out of college. The camp moc is far more versatile as it can be worn sockless in the summer with shorts or with a pair of heavy wool socks in the winter and it looks equally good either way.
I have a pair that has the "crochet " look where it looks like they were woven out of leather rope. I wear them in the summer with shorts & a nautical themed shirt like one with a graphic design of a shark on it or a blue polo shirt. I have worn them without socks with a sprinkle of deodorant powder in the shoes & a deodorant spray on my feet but l found that my feet still sweat & feel uncomfortable, so now I wear them with no show socks
Based on the comments below, it is the age of sneakers. I don't care if many people today think ill of boat shoes. I like them and will wear them. I see them as classics and not trendy. Plus, I like the no slip sole so these shoes are also functional. And I have never been into trends so the trendy can mock me all they want for my preference LOL.
I’m over here in Virginia trust me these things were blowing up like crazy over here around 2018 in high school i still have my same exact pair in my closet that i wear almost everyday lol
I would wear my pair without socks, however the inside sole has been compress, been worn for many years! I could by an insert to compensate for the age of the shoe! Here in Australia and New Zealand the company that sell them is called *Timberland* my pair pre-dates Timberland *_"Foresthill"_*
Thank you Antonio for the wonderful video. Finally, some sartorial video stepping out of the herd mentality (as many so-called sartorialists diss them as non-stylish choice). The thing is: they’re functional, serve the purpose, and practical, and that makes them my choice for many casual occasions, especially in the tropical countries. I wear mine without socks and go through a pair each year in my woodshop. They look great and a no-mark sole works awesome for going into clients homes, Damn comfortable yet they start to stink day-in day-out and the inner sole wears before the outer sole does. Whats a good way to keep down the stink and inner wear?
Have many pairs, used to wear our at least one pair a year. So easy to wear, because of the vareity of shoes on the market I wear them less today than previously. Then I have stopped sailing!
As a woman, I think the deck shoes with the gathered leather at the top seam, moccasin-style look a bit frumpy. The style with smooth, unwrinkled/ungathered leather sides look a lot better.
I’ve heard most style-oriented guys nay-saying the whole boat shoes trend but then here I am watching a video saying how awesome they are, not really sure who to believe 😂
Hope you don’t mind …..they are many videos here that specifically shouted real loud never ever wear boat shoes, I myself wears them.but I find them …back is too low , I mean the sole .thks for your edification
I am looking to buy the Thursday Shoes Boat loafers can someone help me with the sizing? I wear a size 10.5 US-M. The site says to order 1 size down (9.5 US-M) but I feel like that might be a bit too much. Should I go with the recommended 1 size down?
It's hit or miss with these. You have got to spend a little time matching them with the rest of the outfit. They can end up looking stylish or the opposite. There is also a "breed" of boat shoes and mocassins. Some of them look quite good.
Any recommendations on the brand itself? I’m trying to buy a used pair to try out and seeing “made in Indonesia” and “made in China”. I know these companies change hands nowadays & aware some dip in quality hence the question. I’ve always hated these shoes because they were one of the types we had to wear to school 😅
What style of dress shoes are the best choice for guys with large (and wide) feet? I often find that mens dress shoes run super narrow, assuming they even come in my size (between a 12 or 13 wide). Styles that look slick on the display in size 9 look like clown shoes when I put them on at size 13.
Hey Marine, Aaron always puts down boot shoes and should have worn a pair the day he slipped down the stairs, have you convinced him otherwise? I wear mine without socks. I use them as defacto house shoes and for washing the car. I also wear Sperry CVOs but with socks. Semper Fi Marine. PS, where is your son going to college?
There are so many videos on RUclips saying, thatz Boat Shoes are an absolute nogo unless you are on a boat. If I remember right, even RMRS said so and now these shoes are again so stylish? I am a little confused...
Don't be. Trends come and go, taste is changing. It's the same with for example Alpha M and his stance on tight clothes etc. If you like the design - wear it. Don't try to look "stylish" too much
Socks and sandals are the way to go. Boat shoes are also great. These people on here saying they're for old people are wearing what shoes? Sneakers or tennis shoes make you look young?
No socks. Just moderately coat your feet with virgin unrefined coconut oil (anti bacterial so no smell left in shoe) and your golden (for leather shoes).
I never embraced the preppy mindset. Nor am I a nautical guy who spends time on the high seas. I owned a pair of brown top-siders back in the day, but I did not wear them all that often. And whereas I love the idea of being on boats, my vestibular system does not allow me to enjoy a ride on choppy waves. It's hard to feel stylish on 50 mg. of Dramamine. I do, however, like a good moc on dry land. OloKai (a great company, by the way) has a nice modern variation on the traditional boat shoe.
My mother was released from a slave labor camp in Cuba. She was on a boat coming to America to reunite with us. She ate some bad fish and she died…on the high seas!
Good video. Love the history but boat shoes have been out of style since around the mid 2010s. Penny loafers and even horse-bit loafers are way more popular these days.

I’ve always loved these shoes. I think that they are casual but stylish and very versatile.

If I had to go the rest of my life with 1 type of shoes then these are easily the kind I grab. The versatility is 2nd to none.
I think u need to debate Alpha M on this topic. He LOATHES this shoe type with a passion.
Oooh sounds like a video to collaborate with him with.

Absolutely! And you look stylish whether you're in shorts or jeans.
@@RealMenRealStyle going to try the ones from Thursday Boots. Great company, great boots and shoes🔥🔥🔥
Post college I think camp mocs (or other mocs/loafers) are much better than boat shoes. Thursday Boots even has some nice ones.

Klasse ❤Schuhe.
Don't try to look "stylish" too much
Worth watching. Love the details
Socks and sandals are the way to go. Boat shoes are also great. These people on here saying they're for old people are wearing what shoes? Sneakers or tennis shoes make you look young?
Some tend to prefer the trendy look, the choice of young people. I prefer the classic look so I have no issues with boat shoes.
No socks. Just moderately coat your feet with virgin unrefined coconut oil (anti bacterial so no smell left in shoe) and your golden (for leather shoes).
I wear all of my shoes with no-sho socks. I don't like that clammy feel if my feet start sweating.
I usually wear boath shoes with no show socks
Is there such a thing as submarine shoes? Whatever you do, don't ever wear them to go down to see the remains of the Titanic.
I love boat shoes
Damn good video wow
Good video. Love the history but boat shoes have been out of style since around the mid 2010s. Penny loafers and even horse-bit loafers are way more popular these days.
