Thank you thank you for sharing this video explains everything almost you need to know only in the future they could make these generators run on compressed air
How long will this generator last with natural gas? Longer or shorter than if used with gasoline? Is the 1 in the video immediately ready to disconnect from propane and run on natural gas?
Andrew Borntrager it connects and disconnect very simple and quickly. I have not tested mine running down a full tank, but I found this on the web: Propane has approximately 10% less BTU's than gas. If your generator will run 8 hours (and that rating for the Honda assumes 1/4 loaded or 500 watts average per hour) on 1 gallon regular unleaded than it should run about 7+ hours on propane. But there is a caveat. Sometimes Propane is actually more efficient than the gas if the jets are properly adjusted for your elevation. So if you have a 4 gallon propane tank (20 lbs) that would give you 28+ hour run time at 1/4 loading. ETA: I should mention that if you are running on propane that you may not achieve full load wattage. This would mean that instead of 2000 watts you might only achieve 1800 watts.
Get your propane tanks FILLED NOT EXCHANGED. Wait for a sale on empty new tanks. Exchanges are a ripoff ass reaming lol. In my area it's TSC $11.00 vs average exchange center at about $22 - 26
Yes, No exchange! Also what most people don't realize is that exchanges DO NOT fill the tanks you buy, they are at least a gallon short of being full. Don't get ripped off!
This is the absolute best and easiest setup for Honda EU generators, I have tried one other setup that was basically pieces that you have to assemble and it had terrible instructions. And the snorkel that goes on the carb fell apart after a ten minute run.
Just a quick question? What happens when the generator shuts down on an overload and no one closes the propane tank valve? Is propane leaking in the generator (Garage)? Should the choke be used as if the generator would run on gasoline? Thank you, from Quebec City, Canada
The choke is not needed, as pressing the spring button on the regulator acts as the choke. When the generator overloads, it trips the breaker but the engine keeps running.
I'm seriously thinking about getting that Natural gas conversion. Only problem for me is I have three of these Honda generators. That is getting expensive to convert all three.
I bought one regulator, hose and quick connect and just added the fitting under the carb one each of mine so that I have three that can be interchanged.
I have watched more recent vids of this mod and they don't drill 2 holes. Is the 2nd one just for a kill switch? Not sure why this is needed as most show just turning off the tank valve and then just burning the fuel out of the hose, then unplugging the quick release. A kill switch would leave fuel in the hoses, etc.
@@SCPfourfiftyfour The "demand" regulator only supplies gas when it senses a vacuum from the motor. When the motor stops pulling, the gas flow stops at the regulator. A redundant installation, as is used indoors on most gas appliances also includes an electric valve that closes the gas when the power output stops.
All these replies from installers....whats the run time feedback from propane? Anybody ? Great video by the way. Really shows just how DIY it really is.
I like to thank you for doing a real Nice, well explain video...... I have a one Fear, Yes .. Fear .. about this type of Fuel conversion. What happens if the generator decides to stall or someone forgot to turn off the propane source. Wont the gas seep out through the air filter and create a possible Big Problem. Factory Engines with built in fuel conversion usually have a electric fuel solenoid built in to them, so when the engine stops it automatically turns the fuel Off.... One example. when your in the process of firing up the propane Grill. you turn the gas on and that manual push spark Igniter Doesn't work the first few half a dozen try's. a gas pocket forms. Then on the 8th try it Ignites, This . Whoosh . of a Fire ball comes out of you grill, you heart skipped for a second, but you'll lived. The grill situation happen all in a time of 10 to 15 seconds. For a generator stall, it can be easily many minutes before someone gets to the generator, in that time a lot of gas has flowed out creating a potential Hazard. We go from a Whoosh situation to a Boom ! .. I don't mean to scare any one. So Please be care full. If you are using these conversion kits.
This is not the case. The regulator passes gas through it ONLY when it is being drawn from the vacuum of the carburetor. Once the motor shuts off the carb seizes to draw vacuum and the reg stops the flow of gas. So when the engine is off, little to no fuel is being delivered to the genny. Even if it was passing a bit of fuel through the system, your genny should be outside! Thus eliminating any possibility of explosion. If you store the genny indoors please remember to disconnect the fuel supply and leave propane cylinders outside.
Do you guys have a video for the Honda EU3000iS conversion? I just bought the kit and hoping that it comes with step by step instructions but a video would be boss.
I think you put the air filter spacer in the wrong spot. You leave the metal bush in place and the spacer goes over the bolt behind the filter housing. This is to raise it the same distance out as the gas mixer did the other side.
FireplugKLR did the install correctly in 2018. However, as pointed out, all NEW kits place the nylon spacer BEHIND the air-box rather than inside the air-box. Also, the metal bushing is no longer removed. Look at 7:21 thru 7:34 - do not remove this metal bushing. Instead at 8:34 the bolt should now be inserted into the air-box with the nylon spacer BEHIND the air-box. **Recap** 7:21 thru 7:34 - do not remove the metal bushing. Place nylon bushing behind air-box at 8:34. 8:42 thru 8:49 is already to be completed at 8:34. As always, read the instructions for the most current info. Reach out with any question! We are here to help. :) - Hutch Mountain HutchMountain.com
Hey disregard the nay-sayers about the music. I muted it and it was very informative. Thank you. Question though, I have an EU2000i like yours and I was pondering skipping the kill switch install and just turning off the propane at the tank valve and letting it die. Think that would be ok?
Thank you for your comment and ability to mute the music. LOL As to the kill switch, it is not necessary and you will be fine running the fuel out of the line.
How can we make the eu2000 also run with home piped in utility natural gas? See the kit is labeled tri fuel but has no details on third fuel that is possibly natural gas.
@@FireplugKLR thank you for the response. I've herd may have to put a different jet in the eu2000 to get it to run natural gas properly. Also looking for a step by step on what to use for best quick connects to a gas line with a possible needed open close valve in between
@@izifaddag8221 Dude. I converted my Onan 4K genny with this same regulator and 20 feet of hose, fittings, a second stage regulator from my 2 stage regulator system off of my 1000 gallon tanks, and it was about the same $, without all his nice QD connectors, custom screened stickers, switch, etc. This is well thought out and put together. The guy should make a profit for figuring out a nice retail DIY package that any idiot can install in minutes and save having to deal with the high price of gasoline, long term storage of gasoline with additives, and the unsafe volatility of gasoline, etc. I have 7 generators including 3 of these. I'm converting at least one for the absolute ease and reliability, and cleaner air, as well as the safety factor of not having to pour gas into a hot generator. Not to mention having to go find all these parts and build it myself. Here in Commiefornia, with the commie gas tax that nobody voted for, this will save me $ and keep me from feeding the commies their extortion taxes when PG&E turns off the power so they don't get stuck with paying for damages brought on by arsonists and weather, or worse, giving our commie totalitarian governor anything when he steals PG&E from the investors who own the company, in a hostile takeover like true communist regimes do, and of course, for the $... but that is another discussion. Nice job KLR!
@@MrRiotingI am sorry I didn't read your version of War and Peace. Although it seems this worked for you. An expensive large Onan is a far cry from a little Honda 2000. I just don't see why anybody would want to use propane. Its calorific value is much less. Good in a pinch though but that is all.
On most propane applications there's a line from the carburetor over to the one way pancake valve. And the pancake valve to the regulator going into the propane tank. And the carburetor pulls from the pancake one way valve what it needs and if the motor shuts down and loses vacuum the pancake valve stops the flow of propane or natural gas. So that way it won't just keep filling the motor up and propane or natural gas out the air cleaner causing a potential fire hazard. The propane specialist I have worked with say they want a motor on propane to run lean they say they don't want you to run propane to rich. And several propane Specialists I've worked with said this to me. Because I put adjustable dial knob regulator after my standard regulator on the tank so I can adjust the flow of propane for maximum fuel efficiency. And it's very simple to set it it's just a King Kooker adjustable dial knob regulator I installed it in line. I was very cautious a few years ago of running a Generator to lean on propane. The propane professionals tell me they've never heard of it out there running on propane running too lean and burning the motor up. It's not like gasoline where you can lean it out and burn up the engine. because I've done that before racing on gasoline.
I am buying a new unit and adding the LP Conversion kit immediately. Do I need to do anything different for break in? Is it ok to just use the LP fuel on break in? Just trying to learn before I get it. This will be my first generator purchase. Thanks
Bill Cousineau you definitely need to break it in first. Google it to confirm, but I believe I used regular Dino oil and ran it for two hours. Then I drained the oil and replaced it with synthetic oil, but please double check this.
@@FireplugKLR I will Google so I have the correct oils and sequence. My real question is it ok to perform the break in using LP and gas? My guess is it is, but just wanted to make sure. Thanks for the video. Gave me confidence to do this correctly.
The switch modification is needed to turn off the gasoline to the carburetor and then allow the propane or natural gas to run the generator. And that is why the kill switch is added on the top.
I install and everything worked except the generator pumps gas out a tube on the bottom? I started with switch on “gas off” Then as it ran I switched to Gas on. It’s running now and not leaking? What’s going on.
Ok so you switched it over to propane but my question , is the upper valve train and head built for this very dry fuel? Most propane engines have different valve metals and different valve seats that won't crack from dry hot propane. see a gas engine also lubes and cools the intake where propane does not, you could be actually shortening the gas engines life. I lived off grid for 12 years using a 1100ui Honda and it lasted 9 years changing the oil 3 times a week, it only held 1/3 of a liter but eventually ring wear caused it to use oil fouling the plug. I still have it somewhere.
Did you run on gasoline or propane for 9 years? And everyone says running on propane the motor will last two to three times longer. My 2200 watt suitcase style Sportsman dual fuel generator running on propane is super clean spark plug is always new and so is the oil. I only have to change the oil often because I like to keep it in excellent shape. And I like things to last close to forever. And when propane comes out of the bottle it's super cool. You are right gasoline cools and lubricates. but gasoline fouls up spark plugs and gives carburetor problems eventually giving problems which cost time and money. And you have to run a fuel additive in gasoline in the winter and when you're storing it. I've always had good luck out of the Dollar Tree and used there gasoline fuel additive more for alot less. I've used those expensive name brand fuel additives before but did not see any difference in stabil and seafoam overpriced additive. Every bigger house or commercial generator is usually propane or natural gas. They do not make them in gasoline except for the portable units.
I don’t get why that kit is $250. Yes it looks quality but there’s nothing to it. A regulator, two hoses, a couple adapters and the propane feeder. Don’t worry, I’m zipping my flame suit for the anticipated wrath 🔥
LOL, I understand. It is a little pricey for me too, but I tried piecing it together and had a difficult time finding all the parts, then I bought the setup from U.S. Carburetors, and it fell apart after one use. I am fine with paying that price for the quality and EXTREME ease of installation.
FireplugKLR fair enough. To be clear, I haven’t ruled out the idea of getting one but didn’t realize how little to it there was until I watched this video. Especially on the eu2200 which already has the ability to cut fuel and not kill the engine. I appreciate your response
I put three together myself before these kits were available. You'll spend a lot of time hunting down parts and have lots of leftovers. Probably can save about $90 over the kit price, but if your time's worth money, just buy a kit. There are several at different prices. You usually get what you pay for, and Hitch's kit has an orifice, so you don;t have to mess around making and adjusting a needle valve. Also a heck of a nice guy who will go the mile to help you out.
@@gman9756 Thank you, and I do speak English. But this was so easy to install I didn't feel it needed me to comment, and I probably would have stumbled a bit. LOL
Gas lines are not capped off, as this is a tri-fuel system. Normally when you shut down the generator, you would turn the gas off and let the fuel burn off. At this point, you would then turn on the LP or Natural gas line and run the generator.
nope the hutch nylon spacer replaces the oem honda aluminum spacer. it floats but seals the hole from air and dust. see the info at groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Honda_EU2200_Generators/info

About how long would this generator run under a heavy load with a full 20lb propane bottle? I really like this setup. The engine should last a lot longer due to a cleaner burning fuel than regular gasoline. Clean well designed kit also.
Also in my area I found a place that is $2 a pound cash only for that price. and the date is April 21st 2020. And I sell propane tanks on the side I've got plenty of them good-looking tanks and constantly get them 20 lb tanks. I have a few more other sizes of Tanks also for sale. My tanks are used, mostly 20lb with the new valve overfill protection device triangle valve, in date code so anyone will fill it. And if someone buys several of them I'll cut a little stronger deal. And when the date goes out in years of course you can trade the propane tank in for a new date. Stock up prep on Propane fuel the never goes bad and it'll almost last close to Forever. And there is no prepping the Propane fuel like it is gasoline or diesel. I had one full propane tank of fuel that was about over 25 years old. With the things that's happening today with this plague in the world the government can shut off Natural Gas, electricity, water and more but the one fuel they can't shut off is propane. And propane can run a generator, heat, gas grill driveway sealer, Little Buddy Heater, small engines, a car because I've done it and more. Now keep in mind when I run a car on propane I have a universal propane kit for emergencies. I ran the car but it would only go about 11 miles an hour because I couldn't feed it enough volume of propane on the V6 motor to make it go on home because the fuel pump went out on the car but it got it home. And if someone buys some propane tanks off me I'll show em my custom made I made it rain proof generator box and how you run propane on small engines in a car and to start gasoline engines to help get them started on propane and run them in an emergency on propane and how to tune them on propane for fuel efficiency. You can also put a adjustable propane regulator on your propane Honda for maximum fuel efficiency I did it to my 2200 watt Chinese propane inverter generator.
IGNUSA that is a very subjective question, as it will depend greatly on the load you have on the generator. But you should easily get over 10 hours on a 20# LP tank.
@@FireplugKLR This surprises me. I get around 8 hours on a gallon of gasoline, $3-4. I would've thought the 20# LP tank would go a whole lot longer than 10 hours.
@@randomscooter1 Yes, the math does not justify the conversion. Gallon of gas at $3.00 gallon x 3 gallons for 24 hrs = 0.37/hr. Do any of you Honda generator owners use your generator full time off grid running a heat Source like an electric blanket for 8 to 10 hours a night in through the day some? Heat sources like electric blanket, Peter Carlo crock pot, rice cooker and more heat sources kill the inverter side of the generator. I know because my Chinese 2200 watt propane generator died. Running a heat source for 8 Zoom 10 hours a day during the winter there is a difference this is almost you could say commercial use. I just don't know if the Honda generator the inverter is bulletproof like that. What's crazy is my 1995 model 1850 watt Coleman generator on gasoline lasted for 25 years and still going. And the 1850 watt Coleman generator I run pretty hard the engine valves with rattle in it to run something and at times I would overspeed the generator just to get it to run something. You overspeed a generator in an emergency to run something the generator normally wouldn't run. But of course this little hand portable 4 stroke Coleman generator it's mostly all American made with a 139cc engine on it. and my 2200 w. Chinese inverter generator on propane didn't last a year. The Chinese generator on propane 2200 W will not make Power the motor runs but the inverter side is messed up. And everyone talks about this sine wave garbage but what's funny I used all kinds of electronics on that old 1850 watt Coleman generator but you never over speed it when you're running sensitive equipment like Electronics because it will burn the Electronics on most things up. It's amazing how old Meraki made stuff would last a lifetime and Chinese garbage today won't last Almost outside of the warranty. Please leave a comment if you use your honda off grid alot with a heat Source thank you. And people that are not off-grid or only using their generator once in awhile which of course it will last alone time when you're only using it once in awhile. When you're running it everyday is your only source of electricity it's a lot harder on it and there is a difference.
lopez7399 No, it does not need a new carburetor. There is a piece you add to the outside of the carburetor that resembles a thick gasket, and that is where the propane gas comes through.
They sure want a whole lot of money for a few stickers, a kill switch and a short hose with two fittings and a regulator. Almost three hundred dollars without any extra fittings they try to get you to buy. I can buy many, many fuel cans for 300 dollars. There are much cheaper kits available, just Google them.
You mean a cleaner burning fuel? Fuel is fuel...There will be cost, efficiency, and rated outputs based on the fuel source and YES you will not receive warranty support, but a properly designed alternative fuel source is nothing to be concerned about.

Nick Katchmar Yes, common sense goes a long ways you’re absolutely right
Do you guys have a video for the Honda EU3000iS conversion? I just bought the kit and hoping that it comes with step by step instructions but a video would be boss.
0:20 Gotta watch that parallax, that's why you draw the inner the circle first. 8^)
Anyone know why Hitch Mountain says you can't convert the older EU2000i's to tri-fuel with their kits?
Great video. Thanks
**Recap**
7:21 thru 7:34 - do not remove the metal bushing.
Place nylon bushing behind air-box at 8:34.
8:42 thru 8:49 is already to be completed at 8:34.

LOL
As to the kill switch, it is not necessary and you will be fine running the fuel out of the line.

Natural gas

How is the gas flow governed? Is it just a constant flow running lean, then rich as the existing throttle is opened and closed???
You are right it does add more propane once the throttle flap is opened up and engine speed increases.
Bill Cousineau my apologies, I would only break it in using gasoline.
do not understand the whole switch modification deal - please explain
The switch modification is needed to turn off the gasoline to the carburetor and then allow the propane or natural gas to run the generator. And that is why the kill switch is added on the top.
very good thanks
By converting do you lose efficiency of the unit. Also mentioned it is AC power capable. how many BTU's can you run off a 2000 honda ?
9-11k depending on model.
I install and everything worked except the generator pumps gas out a tube on the bottom?
I started with switch on “gas off”
Then as it ran I switched to Gas on. It’s running now and not leaking?
What’s going on.
I have never heard of that happening before, I would recommend going through the installation process again to make sure you did it correctly.
have you tired your kit on natural gas yet?
I have not.
The way the airbox spacer is used in this video is not the same as in the current instructions.
Mine is an older model.
Did you leave the Choke on when starting it with propane?
Andrew Freeman no, leave it in the Run position.
Is there any conversion start button for a Honda 2000i?
I’m not sure what you mean.
Price please in the present day
Ok not to be critical but it says tri fuel that would be 3 fuels so gasoline propane and what if I may ask
Natural gas

Are the gas lines capped off? What if gas is added by mistake?
Gas lines are not capped off, as this is a tri-fuel system. Normally when you shut down the generator, you would turn the gas off and let the fuel burn off. At this point, you would then turn on the LP or Natural gas line and run the generator.
@@FireplugKLR answer, it would flood having too much fuel.
I'm no expert but I believe the space would go behind the air box mount because where it attaches the the carb is farther back

@Magyver Ha ha ha! Another sucker! Taken in by the glossy marketing ads for "solar generators!"
@@vespagts7078 I don't think he understands those things aren't generators. They're storage devices. When the sun's not around for several days in a row, maybe he can get a generator to shine light on his solar panels. Then he can wait for the batteries to charge so he can use it.

About how long would this generator run under a heavy load with a full 20lb propane bottle?
I really like this setup. The engine should last a lot longer due to a cleaner burning fuel than regular gasoline. Clean well designed kit also.
Josh Lucas I have never run it at full load for a whole tank yet, sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.
Standard 20lb BBQ tank. 12hrs full load, 20-22hrs half load, 33+hrs quarter load. :) Definitely extends run times over the 1 gallon gasoline tank!
Did you know where I can find a carburator for this‽‽
No sir, I only made the installation video.
How many output voltage provides ?
SADIKUL HOQUE, BIOLOGY refer to the Honda website.
hey question for you. how long of run time do you get on the gen with lp and a grill tank?
and have you tried natural gas yet?
IGNUSA that is a very subjective question, as it will depend greatly on the load you have on the generator. But you should easily get over 10 hours on a 20# LP tank.
@@FireplugKLR This surprises me. I get around 8 hours on a gallon of gasoline, $3-4. I would've thought the 20# LP tank would go a whole lot longer than 10 hours.
@@randomscooter1
Yes, the math does not justify the conversion.
Gallon of gas at $3.00 gallon x 3 gallons for 24 hrs = 0.37/hr.
Propane tank at $16.99 locally for 24 hours = 0.71/hr
However; if used where stored remotely; cabin, etc. Storing a couple of propane tanks
makes sense than hauling in fresh gas each time.
The kit is worthy when fuel storage is an issue.
I am going to buy the stand alone switch kit:
Amazon www.amazon.com/dp/B0756QMW7P/?coliid=I1KJLY1DBM5BS3&colid=EV8XTR7ZVO8C&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

20 bucks.
When I bought my EU2000i many years ago, I bought the extended tank kit off e-bay (They have them on Amazon now too.)
Swap out the cap with quick connect, add a marine style boat fuel can (6 gal) and you're good to go for 2 days or more.
And no need to refill the genny!
@@randomscooter1 You will achieve about 30 hours of run time on a 20lb bbq tank at the same load in which you are currently getting 8 hours with gasoline.

I have used my EU2000i for ham radio field day for 4 years, normally runs 24 to 26 hours non stop with no issues.
