Another good fix by the U-tube guru. The most striking thing to me that came out of this video was the fact that the original owner couldn’t get anyone, including a dealer, to fix it. This one was a bit tricky but not a difficult repair for a professional. Good thing we diy amateurs have Jim doing these videos so we can learn how to take care of our own equipment ourselves. Everybody watching should be hitting the “thanks” button and supporting Jim.
An unfortunate reality, but in part, one that we created ourselves. Those who were around 40+ years ago know that this is the most coveted knowledge of all! I remember only a few men..... that were talented enough AND patient enough to teach and let others learn.
Dealer refusal might be because under agreement, they must use OEM parts which I deduce parts are no longer available. It wasn’t lost to me that he used the parts he had on hand. He cockroached a replacement jet and float. He cleaned up the gasket and used same gasket.
You remind me of my Father. He taught us to be clean & go the extra mile. I know he lost money on his time bc he aways wanted it to look better than how the customer brought it in. Shining up the plastic with new labels was above & beyond what most would do. Nice work Brother!!
@@jcondon1 By the way, I subscribed for this same reason. The work ethic on display here is admirable and something you don't see a lot of in this day and age. Cheers.
Amazing attention to detail. Walking into this video I was like, 45 minutes to fix a leak? I wasn't expecting a repair, a tune-up, an oil change, and a full detail job to be part of it.
Agreed: my Dad said that, 'If a job was worth doing it was worth doing properly.' Such as the cleaning and label replacements. Very nice, in the proper sense of the word 'nice'.
They are a great generator. After reading manual, if you half close the main On/Off control, it will close off fuel and allow motor to continue to run, to use all fuel in line/carburettor. Then turn control Off, once fuel in line is used.
This fuel shutoff method is the manual's recommendation for mid term storage, in addition to using stabilizer & topping off the tank to prevent any condensation - specifically up to a year. 1+ years it recommends completely draining tank & carb before storage (in addition to doing an oil change and making sure the oil's had a chance to cycle a bit). @leneger9174 sounds like some condensation in the tank (and into the carb) did a number over time (ethanol blends don't help this)... did you get it going again?
This won't have solved the problem here. Shutting off the fuel line would let the generator run for a short while and stop. Which would be no good. The only fix was getting the float to work properly, like he did.
Great work! These are a great unit but can be a little finicky at times. I am a small engine mechanic myself. This is an issue I have run into before and usually end up having to replace the carb with all new gaskets. To those of you working on these generators or even if you own one, I would recommend getting a label maker and copy the Vin number on the outside and stick it just to the left of the carb on the black engine cover. I have found that when the unit gets dirty the Vin number is so close to the ground it usually gets rubbed off especially when used by commercial guys.
8years x 365 days x ? hours every day = Y total hours so far? Love to know because another off gridder was 17k hours before PM of replacement belt.... then 17K more hours.... before he gave it to a friend..... still running.... aiming for 35 k on the second belt just to see if it could have done the whole stretch on the original belt!!
@@JohnSmith-yv6eq I can’t say the hours exactly however she ran at sunset to midnight and sometimes during the day. The only thing replaced was of course oil. It’s a small and quiet machine and importantly she works and works and works.
I have a Honda EU2200i and it was leaking fuel as well... like pouring it out on the pavement when I started it. I watched your video and it gave me confidence that I might be able to fix it or at least figure out what was going on. Well taking things apart the float was good, but there were several different areas that were clogged. One clog would force the fuel from the pump to the carb bowl, to out the carb overflow hose and that is where the leak was coming from. Used brake cleaner and the plastic stem and I cleaned out ALL potential holes and put it back together... two pulls later it just started right up with no leaking fuel! Turned it off then back on with a single pull. AMAZING! Thank you for taking the time posting this video. It was a BIG help. Thanks James.
Much gratitude for seeing your way and plugging through all the stops. Tip: when using the sonic cleaner it can still work effectively if you can contain the liquid cleaner in a plastic container e. g. Costco cashew container. This can conserve cleaning liquid as well as leave the tank in more pristine condition.
That generator has been used and abused. Also, you started it a couple times in Eco Mode. Page 33 of the manual says to wait a couple minutes before switching to Eco. FWIW. My EU2000i has been solid gold for years. Only gets used when the power goes out. It has kept life comfortable thru several long winter power outages. Mine developed a small problem a few years ago. In Eco Mode it would rev up and down with no load. RUclips taught me how to clean the jet...problem fixed. It is always ready to go. Started every few months with fresh gas and the oil gets changed regularly. Nice video.
Yes,as someone else commented,a set of JIS screwdrivers will help you a lot working on Honda products. I rebuilt my 75 Honda ct70 engine and never stripped a screw after buying a good quality set. Hello from British Columbia
We have the exact generator which I converted to LPG and I’m servicing it next week after ordering the parts. What I did notice on your repair is that the gasket seal being added it must have been taken apart before which always makes me suspicious that it’s not gone back together correctly or any O rings or gaskets changed on rebuild. Great video, thank you.
We have used the ruclips.net/user/postUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!
Ive got two of these generators and a fishing buddy has another two. We use them mainly to run our 30 amp campers and charge the five 12v boat batteries and run a small residential freezer during our week or two week fishing trips. We run the snot out of these Hondas and they are awesome. We run 91 octane non ethanol fuel and they never miss a lick. They have to be 8 to 10 years old and we do three or four trips a year. Thanks for the video in case we eventually have any carb issues.
You must be doing everything right! Keep on doing it! There is no reason for the gen to go wrong if the maintenance is kept up and the running conditions are good (airflow for cooling, protection from rain)..
Had a power equipment shop that was 90% Honda. I loved the way you worked on the 2000 and the cleaning and stickers were exactly how we did things! We used to love it when the customer came to pick up his mower, trimmer, pump, genny etc and he would exclaim "oh no that's not mine!!"
The emissions sticker indicates the generator was built in 2008 I think and when it was started, the green power light did not blink, indicating the generator has under 100 hours of run time. Shame on Honda dealer for trying to upsell a new generator.
I have the same generator, it is by far the most reliable I have ever owned. The fuel filters are a bit of an adventure but once you get the procedure down it's not to bad. I have not yet had to take the carb off ( after many years of use and transport ) so this was very enlightening. Thank you for the thorough and informative video, you have a new fan : ).
Mine doesn't get used very often, so I bypassed the whole liquid fuel/carburetor issue by converting mine to run on propane. It can sit for years, unused, and it fires up after a few pulls every time; when I'm done, I just put it away again. I was told that the old EU2000i is actually better than the current EU2200i.
Use good alcohol-free gasoline and always drain the carb bowl before storing it for more than a week or two and you'll never have issues with the Honda inverter generators. Simply running the carb "dry" isn't quite good enough because it never goes fully dry when it dies with the fuel shut off. Those last couple of teaspoons of fuel left in the carb bowl will cause problems for you eventually when it turns to varnish. Drain the tank too to be sure and fog the cylinder with a few drops of oil down the spark plug hole. If you change the oil according to the manual the genset will last nearly forever unless it is used every day all day long in construction use and even then it'll last for years of that heavy use.
You can also buy complete new replacement carbs ($200 for a Honda one, $40 for a generic one) that are easy to swap on. Just have to swap over the e-throttle motor. I did this on our old 2nd hand EU2000i and she got us through 5 days without power after a hurricane!
You are right by stating the gasket between the engine and Carb is the most critical,It looks to be running rich at the end.I fixed one of these generators by using seal all adhesive gas resistant gel on both Carb gaskets. And the generator ran much better without black smoke and used a E instrument E4400 Gas analyzer on the exhaust output to see the difference. If there is a small air leak on those gaskets,The engine will run on either side of lean and rich.A good exhaust Gas analyzer would really erase all doubt of uncertainty and eliminate ambiguity of how the engine is running within the stoichiometric range.Good work for the people.
I bought this same generator new for our occasional power outages because it is reliable and quiet. It has served me well and this video is great for future reference. Thanks for doing it and I would never consider taking it anywhere for service now that we have RUclips.
With all the extra detail work that a repair shop would never do, your customer will swear up and down that the generator isn't the same one he gave to you to fix. He now has a new generator thanks to your skills and attention to detail.
Great video! I have one of these exact units as well. Someone gave it to me and said it smoked a little bit. I started if and was engulfed in a cloud of oil smoke, the rings were shot. I called him back and said " it smokes a little??? he laughed. Hey it was free! I tore it down and replaced the rings and timing belt. Put it back together hand works great. Great channels James, great videos!
And I thought float or needle valve. I took a yellow knock off to a local shop. Young kid at a flea market. He did my big one no problem. I gave him my yellow one. I am still thinking it had bad gas. He gives it back to me in a box , all apart. Short of a meltdown I got no where with him. So it’s here waiting got me. Excellent work
Thanks for the video. I bought one of these to recharge my Victron Inverter battery setup for crucial appliances at home. I went back and forth between this and a champion that was 40% less. The newer Eu2200i version shifts the oil inlet closer to the edge of the machine, which makes a oil change much easier. Glad to see a teardown w tips. I'm using ethanol free with Stabil and going to maintain it closely.
Hello James, That was a professional observation that fixed the fuel leak. Unless a guy wanted to tear it apart again to fix the low oil shut down, I think I would just add a couple more ounces of oil and overfill it just a little bit.
Never overfill a small engine that relies on splash lubrication, it can be just as detrimental as running low oil. Try a diluted oil (run 1/2 ATF mixed with 10w-30) and drain, or flush crankcase with some two stroke gas. The low oil sensor is just a float/contact set up and you want to remove any sludge possibly causing the float to stick. Then fresh oil change or two, you'll be fine.
I found one of these in the trash down the street from my house and the guy said it leaked. I noticed that the overflow was jammed in the tank so I removed it and reseated it and it runs great. No leaks.
That's a nice generator, I can't believe no one would touch it. Really clean power output and quiet to boot. What's nice is you can even get decals for it. I'd like to see a close examination of that float, I wonder what's up with it. I think the majority of that smoke was just from excessive fuel, probably a good thing you changed the oil. It was probably diluted with gas. Good job.
Leaking gasoline is something shops try to avoid like fire... Get it? Fire. I think it's just easier for them to stay away from it than to do something right.
Those types of fuel pumps are a diaphragm type. If some of the seals are bad, it can and will draw fuel into the crank case over time. When the crank case gets full enough, it will blow the crankcase gasket.
James: I had the same model unit in my shop last year. The carb would flood when cold starting. I finally got an aftermarket carb to solve the problem. Cleaning and going thru the old carb did not solve the issue. I usually have excellent cleaning carbs in my ultra sonic cleaners, but not this time. Thanks for an excellent video.
I love working on those. I actually have 4 of them but it is a challange finding parts suppliers that have all the parts in stock. Shipments get delayed from backordered parts. Ever so slightly enlarging the ultra tiny pilot orfice improves idle hunt. I use motorcraft synthetic 5w40 oil in mine and don't have the cold oil shutdown problem. There is a recall for some models for a fuel line from the pump to the carb to be replaced. Also it's a good idea to adjust the valves and if needed decarbonize the piston and rings by a nice hot soak of penetrating oil through the spark plug hole. Works for me
I have one of these that is complete. I put a new timing belt on it after discovering that was what it needed. The guy claimed it was leaking oil from somewhere. After repairs and running it for three camping trips it is burning oil. It will run for about 2.5 to 3 hrs and low oil shutoff. The power unit is good and I want to sell the Honda. Location is phoenix, Arizona
@@williamvaughan1218 I had the engine apart and the cylinder looked good. I had the rings off cleaned and reinstalled. I didn’t notice anything that would cause it too smoke like it. Maybe something to do with valve guides.
Nice job checking out & repairing this Honda! I have the EU1000 and carried it around in my work truck and of course it would get a bit dirty & scuffed up. I would spray it down with Armor All, let it soak in for an hour or more & then buff it out. This would bring up the finish a bit nicer.
Glad to see another EU2000 live on. I don't know what it is about the EU2000/EU2200 generators, but I absolutely adore them. Maybe it's their size, reliability, or quietness. My own is 18 years old and completely neglected. Yet, every time a hurricane hits, it's an absolute superstar, starting on the 1st or 2nd pull, even on the nastiest gas I feed it, including leaded gas contaminated with water.
I love that you cleaned it up and re-stickered. I used to work at a university computing center and repaired a few computer terminals (remember computer terminals?). I always spent time cleaning them after repairing them. People asked why I cleaned them. I said, "I have to."
My experience with float in carb saging has been adjusting a metal piece that engages with the needle. I couldn't see if this was an option with the honda carb you were working on. I suspect it could have gotten bent down by the same party responsible for using rtv in a gas motor. Nice job getting that back right. It was nice of you to spiff up with new decals. You are very thorough and i enjoy your channel.
A great video as always , cannot understand how the original needle and float arrangement could end up like that with original parts still installed. Watching the sine wave output and THD reading's being so close to perfect makes me want to further study the concepts and hardware that makes that possible . Filters and PWM technology with zero distortion on crossover where usually you would expect some more distortion. Inverter technology using powerful rare earth magnets instead of coil generated fields and the rotating speed not effecting frequency is so much more effient.
James, I'm a big fan of your channel. Please don't call these "old" it makes me feel old too. I have 2 of those that are still running like new. One of them thanks to your channel btw. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge this is one of the best RUclips channels.
This video is testimony to what I am encountering quite often with a lot of shops. The quality of repair personnel has decreased quite a bit. It seems like every time I go to a local equipment dealer, there are several new faces.
It’s funny,I stopped at a local repair shop last year because I know the guy quite well and he tells me he has a rough time getting workers in this day and age. One kid showed up for his first day and disappeared two hours later without even telling them that he quit, just left. Another older guy started and on his third day asked for a couple days off because he had some stuff to do,nobody wants to work anymore I guess.
Converted a very similar (if not the same) generator to electric start and automatic switchover a while ago. In hindsight it was not the ideal choice, way to cramped for making modifications but it did workout in the end.
At 7:25, the screws that strip out easily are JIS (not Philips), a JIS driver will work better. Philips can work, but make them real easy to strip. You may know this already, so this is for anyone who isn't aware. The dot on top of them is the giveaway that it's JIS.
I've actually torn one of these down using your videos, it's not that bad, a lot of parts but they do a great job design wise. Had to replace the internal cages since they were busted up.
I was talking to a friend of mine about the EU1000i Honda generator and they have about doubled in price since I bought mine. They are very reliable generators.
As a lifetime Honda tech after my military career. I find it bizarre no Honda shop or qualified service shop would fix it? I never refused or was unsuccessful in recovering a job. Customer satisfaction is respect and that is free advertising eh Good on you for gettin it dunnn eh
I used to work at a outdoor power equipment dealer. We were a Honda dealer and sold these units. Customer brought one in locked right up. Said it was fine when he put it up and was locked up when he went to use it again. I could not get it to free up neither could the Honda factory rep. There were no signs of being run dry. I ended up putting a short block in it under warranty. After the job was done me and the Honda rep finally got the piston out of the bore. The rings were corroded right to the cylinder wall. Pitted the cylinder wall some. I think it got some water in it.
On ANY Honda engine, especially one that experiences a flooding issue usually requires a new spark plug. The NGK plugs do not hold up well to fuel saturation. Pretty much any time I service a Honda engine, I replace the plug automatically. It is not uncomon for the needle to fail if the unit sits with old fuel in it. I am amazed no one wanted to service that generator. I have been given several generators over the years simply because the owner was told it was not worth repairing it. The price of labor today really can push the consumer into buying something new. I have a real issue with that. To many good repairable small engines end up scrap over things like you experienced.
It runs good ,and looks good ,that James touch that little extra that shows with new decals and a clean up, That sine wave is probably cleaner than most houses have on their incoming power
Thanks for all of your great videos AND the fact that you used to measure liquids in milliliters (mL) vs cubic centimeters (cc) as I have many in other videos use for the same measurements. As a retired Medical Technologist it is annoying to hear the misuse of the nomenclature in liquid measurements.
You are a brave man ,I brought one of these 240 volt Honda generator and after me,and my mower mechanic spending hours on it he got it going and I sold it as quickly while it still ran. I do not like the ignition systems it has . Thanks for. The video though James.
Well done! If I may make a suggestion you're likely aware of, using JIS screwdrivers greatly cuts down on the number of stripped phillips screw heads. Having 2 of these units myself (One is an EU2200) reminded me a no fuel in bowl start can indeed take several pulls. There is a company called Hutch Mountain who makes excellent propane adapters. I've had good luck with them.
I've been considering a propane mod to my EU2200i, but think I'll wait until the the factory warranty expires! Good to know of a reputable supplier. The one thing I don't love about owning a generator for very occasional emergency use is having to periodically replace fuel and start the generator up. Ethanol-free gas is very hard to find in my area, so I keep $$$ TruFuel in the generator and a 5 gallon gas can of regular unleaded that I periodically pour into the car and replace. How many running watts can you get out of your propane converted EU2200i? I know propane is about 90% as energy dense as gasoline.
@@readyplayer2 Never did a formal test, but I recall Hutch telling me about a 10% loss could be expected. Great company to deal with and a surprisingly easy modification. Any mods are easy to reverse. Hardest part would be finding a plug or grommet to insert where propane adapter fitting port was drilled. I can get ethanol free fuel with a little effort (you can also make your own) which I store exclusively for emergency and lawn equipment use. I find mixing PRI-G keeps it good for a year. I don't use mine very often, but run them every few months alternating gas and propane to keep things from drying out too long. Every gas use is followed by draining carb bowl with drain screw. Zero issues this way. This said, I do annually drain all fuel and replace with fresh, stabilized gas in EU2000, EU2200 and EU6500 units. I also keep spare carb parts and gaskets plus more just in case, but that's the Boy Scout in me. What I like about propane is the all but unlimited shelf life and cleaner burn. Using a "Y" adapter I can power both EU units at once in parallel. Works great and I am rather particular in the equipment I get. Before I forget....I added an hour meter and Honda's anti theft bracket to both.
Subscribed. Your video inspired me to renew the decals on my 21 year old EU2000i. The sad thing is, all the scuffs and wear and tear on the exterior were all from friends who borrow it from time to time. Your going the extra mile in making it look good after making it run good is very refreshing. Most shops would have stopped after making it run. Great work thanks for posting.
I recently got hold of a THD meter. Been having fun measuring several UPSs, a pure sine inverter, and even my local power grid. I've got a couple conventional generators I want to look at later this spring. It'll be interesting to see what the sine wave and THD look like on those. :)
I have a ups that powers my network rack (which is basically a onu , router and switch) that has an output thd of more than 55% while in battery backup mode cus it is a square wave unit. But it doesn't cause any harm to any of the load connected and runs for few hours on a 6ah Lifepo4 pack.
Rance here. A lot of good information in this video, especially if one has seen your previous video on other similar machines. It's good he brought the gen set to you. Looks like he had done some prior work on it. I think the best advice is these require expert mechanics like yourself. I knew you would get it running but I still felt that this gen set needed more maintence because it had been lacking routine maintece in its past. I wish the owner would have requested for a complete redo it would serve him better.
That machine is absolutely amazing. I am impressed with it and the perfect outputs and sine wave. And that oil sensor is just doing its job. Better to kill the engine and force you to address the potential problems than to risk killing the engine for lack of lubricant. You don’t want a $500 picture tube to blow protecting a 10 cent fuse.
Nice repair. Them Honda's take a beating friend of mine has one we used at his off grid cabin for years. The oil sensors in then machines clog up very easy with old oil. Even cleaning them out don't work. We changed the one in his and changing them isn't for the faint at heart lol what a pain. His smoked as well after so many years the rings wore out. But even though it smokes it will still get small jobs done.
James, since you have that heat gun out already you should try and warm up that plastics where they are white a lot of times it’ll come back around to looking new. Love the vids
These little gens are my favorite. I've also had the similar Yamaha but while the Yamaha is a tier above the Chinese knockoffs I feel like the Honda has just been so much better and reliable given I regularly use it at 6-10000ft elevation. Also for just a few $100 more the Yamaha engines still been made in China and Honda in Japan makes it worth the extra $
Many small engine shops don't like to work on anything because it costs so much and many people never come back to pick their items up. They want the shop to store items for them until the next time they want to use it and they can't sit on the parts and labor costs that long. Another shop charges $80 up front, takes the customers contact information to call, text, email when it's ready and the customer signs an agreement to pick it up within 30 days of the notification or the item belongs to the shop.
Regarding the low oil shutdown - conventional oil foams up too much in these EU2000 when its cold and it triggers the low oil sensor. You can see there is some foam on top when you take the cap off. Switch to a different oil, preferably a synthetic one. I've had no problems with the SuperTech Full Synthetic from WalMart. Also, I would recommend one of the the oil fill extension tubes that are available. It makes pouring the oil out super easy and mess free.
I own one as well. Going to have to use it next week for heat. Now, I have a much better idea of it's output and limits. Thanks James for the insight and great video.
@@ElectronicMusicUnderground To power my RV when I get back to Canada. It's cold there right now. All the appliances in there like a electric heater, coffee maker, stuff like that. My solar panel will power lights and refrigerators. No use having warm beer !
The only problem I have came across is owners only running a couple of low wattage light globes and using in on echo throttle. Theengine gets glazed bore and start burning oil. The fix was load it up with near max wattage and run a full tank of fuel through it, which will de glaze the bore and in turn fix the oil burning.
I wonder if the oil had ever been changed. Yeesh! Before I started using ethanol free fuel in everything but my pickup, I ha a couple failures of plastic floats and a needle that lost it's neoprene tip. Between the old oil, the fuel and the transfer of said fuel into the crankcase, I wonder if it will continue to use a little oil. Will you keep us posted? Either way it was a very informative video. Good on ya.
We used to use a torch on old atv plastics to bring some shine back out on them worked great and last a lot longer that oil just don’t get carried away you can burn the plastic then it looks bad
As always another helpful, well thought out video. I do appreciate you taking the time to include the different parameters, no load and under load, like THD, Frequency and voltage. With four different generators of my own, I’m hoping that you’ll find time to do a video on THD, vs frequency and voltage with no load and loaded. I live in a rural area where everyone has a contractor type generator, but very few people take harmonic distortion into consideration for their electronics.
I'm not aware of any easy way to directly measure 60 Hz THD. Most people just look at the waveform on a scope with the generator under load and see how close it is to a sinewave.
Wow! Looks like a brand new generator, but that was one persnickety oil switch. I appreciate your tenacity to get this thing running like that. I have the exact same generator, and it definitely needs a tune-up. Great video as usual.
True competence is rare in the world, one of life's great satisfactions to find. And here it is... I'll bet the generator was tumbled upside down while it wasn't working. The cylinder got some oil in it, and the level sensor got into a weird state. All's well that ends well... Hey, James. If you value subscriptions, consider doing some "shorts." There should be a gajillion little tips you could offer in that format, and it would probably direct many people to the channel. Yeah I know you have a family and a day job. Just a suggestion...
Great video. I have one too $599.00 new. It’s ten years old. Two things I have done was to add an hour meter. Red matches case like it came that way. The other is to record hours and date of oil change on the inside of the cover with a sharpie. Lots of room. My only failure is to drag it out and run it an hour or two every month or so. Thanks again.
Good job and a lot of patience. From my experience, the smoke is often indicative of people tipping these over on the side, allowing oil to contaminate the muffler. If the smoke doesn't clear after a few minutes, the muffler will require thorough cleaning that could take several hours. Still beats paying for a new muffler from Honda. FWIW, float needles do not get worn and shorter over time. That along with the RTV points to improper repair in the past. Keep the videos going!
@@JohnSmith-yv6eq Yup, I tried. Ran a whole fuel tank through it, 6 hours @ high#power settings. Did not burn it off. Had to rinse with fuel. Those quiet Honda mufflers are very intricate and thus hard to clean.
I being much more of a shade tree chanic than you. May have continued to pull and pull and pull and pull before I checked the spark plug and spark. I’m surprised as thorough and meticulous of a diagnostician of small engines and mechanical things as you are and the owner telling you that he had to run it with partial choke that you did not quickly go to the spark plug when it failed to start after carb cleaning. But hey, we all have our off days. LOL. Great video. I was looking at buying a used Honda generator unit like or similar size to this a few days ago that was reported as having ran last time it was used and now it won’t. If I see their post again and it’s still available I may give heavier consideration to buying. After I give due consideration to considerably less dexterous hands and fingers. Left wrist ulnar and radius bone shattered, median nerve spent a month impinged between shattered ends of ulnar and VA took a full 30 days to get me a referral to orthopedic surgeon where it was found that all the shattered and broken bones had almost completely mended in the wrong places taking him about 4.5 hours to chip, break, reposition and glue bones as best possible including some bionic attachments consisting of numerous pins and a couple plates that was early 2021 then this Easter 2023 I either had a small stroke or a ruptured cervical disc that affected the same areas of the right hand. So I now refer to my hands, left and right as Bwoke and Stwoke since they both have reduced dexterity, sensory and strength issues. But, I still have hands and can make do mist things after dropping stuff and figuring out alternative ways to do things. Really enjoy your videos. If there is a local vocational junior college or high school with a vocational program they are missing a natural teacher in you not being there teaching our youth how to do such things.
I have the exact generator and it has been bulletproof with maintenance and fresh fuel. Honda makes exceptional products. Thank for all the videos. I have learned a lot.
Based on the look of that spark plug you replaced, I'd suspect something has been allowing oil into the combustion chamber. That exhaust smoke is very unusual. My EU2000i has never smoked like that. There's something else going on with this unit.
I was a small engine mechanic for years. We never sent these away, they're actually pretty easy to work on. I don't believe they sent him away for a minute..
Nice job !!! The plastic jet it was clogged in my 2000 so I had to use a tiny PC of a wire brush string to clean it up and no more surges....Now I use iridium spark plug for better performance
Glad to see you have acquired a bench to work off. The floor isn’t the best for your back. Next, a small shop gantry to lift those pesky heavy gen sets? Great videos and very informative.
Great perseverence, James! Your"" Hold the sparkplug in front of your hand for a better view "" trick definitely does not work with dark gloves. Habit, I know!

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback and the super thanks
@@jcondon1 By the way, I subscribed for this same reason. The work ethic on display here is admirable and something you don't see a lot of in this day and age. Cheers.
That’s is what is called ‘ old school’!
Thanks for that.
I have a 2000.
Carb actually had rust in the bowl
Inline filter was damaged
Oil alert is finicky
Excellent tutorial.
Bought in 2010. Run every day for 8 years without hiccup off-grid cabin. Highly recommend these Hondas!
8years x 365 days x ? hours every day = Y total hours so far?
Love to know because another off gridder was
17k hours before PM of replacement belt....
then 17K more hours....
before he gave it to a friend..... still running....
aiming for 35 k on the second belt just to see if it could have done the whole stretch on the original belt!!
It also allows you to use stronger solvents without gassing yourself and blowing up the house.
Nice video.
i give the owner props for buying a quality generator. its the guy who buys harbor frieght stuff, you get frustrated at.
Yes,as someone else commented,a set of JIS screwdrivers will help you a lot working on Honda products. I rebuilt my 75 Honda ct70 engine and never stripped a screw after buying a good quality set. Hello from British Columbia
I absolutely love it when you have an EU 2000i on your plate… I’ve had mine since 2000, bought new. It has
This generator is an excellent performer. They all have their quirks and it is good that you can sus them. Good work James.
Man, replacing the decals is definitely going the extra mile. Nicely done.
If he did find a shop to work on it I doubt he would get it back all cleaned up with new stickers on it. 👍
Amen!
Is he getting it back? Or did he give it away?
The emissions sticker indicates the generator was built in 2008 I think and when it was started, the green power light did not blink, indicating the generator has under 100 hours of run time. Shame on Honda dealer for trying to upsell a new generator.
@@4RXLA Exactly!
Always super professional when you're doing a job, it's just a pleasure to see when you're troubleshooting a engin. 👍🇸🇪💚🇺🇲
Nice work fixed fuel leak and maintenance new spark plug and cleaned plastics and new stickers owner going to be extatic quality work @James Condon

I did not know that I could get a set of "Honda" decals to replace my Harbor Freight predator ones.

Great channels James, great videos!
a magnetic dip stick is a must on these , The amount of metal they collect is astounding , much better than flowing around in there like sandpaper
Excellent work
A torch will clean up all the dulling of the plastic the older one where way quieter the metal side ones great job getting it going again
As usual, excellent! Thank-you.
The fact that the non-level float and needle issue developed 'out of nowhere' is odd.
@@goatman86 If they are afraid of gasoline leaks, they shouldn't be in the small engine repair field.

Have had the similar issue in the past except it would flood after running for about an hour. New needle and seat did not fix it. New carb did.
@@r_azona_outdoors why not re ring it? You may find the rings are stuck in the piston due to carbon.
Same generator 12 years, eco pilot was plugged, I also use a magnetic dip stick. Now only use alcohol free fuel..purrs at eco idle. Excellent video
Surprised no-one wanted to look at it, being one of the planet's most well-known and reliable gennies.

I love how you talk to us as if we are standing there looking over your shoulder as you do your work another classroom quality video
Fabulous repair as usual. This repair reminds me to check the little things each time and to take nothing by granted. Thanks for the videos.

There are a lot of these generators for sale second hand as they are very good .....Thanks for the informative video
Always a pleasure to see a master technician going step-by-step diagnostic work and very meticulous as well. 👏😯
Wow that sign wave is really clean and no bumps or switching noise and cross channel distortion
At 7:25, the screws that strip out easily are JIS (not Philips), a JIS driver will work better. Philips can work, but make them real easy to strip. You may know this already, so this is for anyone who isn't aware. The dot on top of them is the giveaway that it's JIS.
I have a JIS screw driver just for that purpose. Still strip out though if not careful.
I agree, I have worked on these gens and they are pretty straightforward when you learn to dissemble the plastic.
At first I thought it was a lost cause. Good repair .
Don't think Professor James accepts a lost cause .
Armor all idiot does wonders
I recently got hold of a THD meter. Been having fun measuring several UPSs, a pure sine inverter, and even my local power grid. I've got a couple conventional generators I want to look at later this spring. It'll be interesting to see what the sine wave and THD look like on those. :)
I have a ups that powers my network rack (which is basically a onu , router and switch) that has an output thd of more than 55% while in battery backup mode cus it is a square wave unit. But it doesn't cause any harm to any of the load connected and runs for few hours on a 6ah Lifepo4 pack.
What meter do you have to measure thd? I'm looking for one and can't find one locally and don't know what to look for online
I think the previous owner tried to fix leak by adding silicone to gaskets.
@@karirautio Yes, I think you are right.
When u pulled out those new stickers I was soooo happy.
James, since you have that heat gun out already you should try and warm up that plastics where they are white a lot of times it’ll come back around to looking new. Love the vids
Oil sticks to case when cold ergo shut down. Use 0w40 or 5w 20 in cold climates. 60 yrs a honda mech

I love this Honda style . Because is so easy to get to the carb . Any other brand you have to take half of unit off to have acces to the carb .
Very clean machine. It’s great to see you calmly working on it.
Wow! Looks like a brand new generator, but that was one persnickety oil switch. I appreciate your tenacity to get this thing running like that. I have the exact same generator, and it definitely needs a tune-up. Great video as usual.
Thanks Stella! It had a few more issues then I was led to believe.
True competence is rare in the world, one of life's great satisfactions to find. And here it is...
I'll bet the generator was tumbled upside down while it wasn't working. The cylinder got some oil in it, and the level sensor got into a weird state. All's well that ends well...

Cleaning muffler of oil = running engine under high wattage load for an hour.
The oil burns out of the muffler packing no problems...
You’re welcome!
I really admire your attention to detail applying new decals, my motto is the same .👍
Thats perfection right there, new float, lcarb and plug, and engine starts right up. Good job!
LOGIC AND KNOWLEDGE IN A GOOD COMBINATION WHICH LEEDS TO YOUR WELL DESERVED SUCCESS!
Great fix and i bet the guy it belongs to appreciated the work you put put into it. Thanks for sharing.
He did. He was very excited to see it running again.
Eucalyptus oil is great for getting the gooey stuff and sharpie markings off plastic. Smells great too!
Based on the look of that spark plug you replaced, I'd suspect something has been allowing oil into the combustion chamber. That exhaust smoke is very unusual. My EU2000i has never smoked like that. There's something else going on with this unit.
Seen that before, a new valve stem seal fixed the problem.
From the looks of it, that generator pretty worn out. Probably not worth a top end rebuild.
Got flooded with fuel. Let it warm up..
@@2nickles647 Fuel Flood doesnt explain a black crusted spark plug.
@@Chris-yy7qcwell Yes it would!
I was a small engine mechanic for years. We never sent these away, they're actually pretty easy to work on. I don't believe they sent him away for a minute..
Lucky guy for living near you and tracking you down. You did a wonderful job for the man.
Nice job !!! The plastic jet it was clogged in my 2000 so I had to use a tiny PC of a wire brush string to clean it up and no more surges....Now I use iridium spark plug for better performance
Thanks, this video got me off my butt and into the shop to fix my generator. Thanks.
I used a Honda generator back in 1989 when I had my garage door and opener business and they were awesome!
