would watch a Spaghetti Bolognese tutorial from loopop
Don't tempt me! It will certainly get more views than synth videos I'll tell you that!

This is the review I've been waiting for! :) Amazing sound and beautiful machine all together. Dreadbox didn't disappoint. Superb review as always Ziv :)
I like the clean design of the synth, from the knobs to the tight corners, it also sounds pretty nice.
Thanks for another great video, Loopop.
So blown away by this synth I actually bought a second. I don’t have two of anything else, but it’s great at a lot of things.
As always, top quality! Im sure lots of dedicated work in the editing help make these reviews shine 🏆
I've owned this synth for a few years and every time I watch this video it blows my mind about all the features I've missed. Like being able to record notes into the sequencer. I've always found the sequencer to be the weak part, because I hate programming it with the sliders. New level unlocked! Many thanks for your content, you beautiful human.
Your video came at the perfect time. My partner pre-ordered this weeks ago for my birthday... while waiting I get to watch your awesome walkthrough+review!
Happy birthday!
Glad to see you got yours! I’ve been waiting for the “Loopop Manual” to come out. Currently working on a video series exploring the presets, looking forward to using using info in this video to start making my own. All in all, this is the most exciting synth I’ve ever added to my collection. Fits into my musical style perfectly.
I look forward to finishing ziv's vid, as loopop is aaaalwaaays the bee's knees(!), & I look forward to checkin' your insights on the typhon, j t a guts, as I've got one on its way to me from sweet, sweet greece... super grateful. yaaaaay!!
Such powerful little box, very clever ...and it sounds awesome.
Wow, Dreadbox nailed the OSC 2 detune knob. I love how the sensitivity of the knob changes based on how close it is to commonly used pitches. Brilliant! More synths should do stuff like that.
As usual your thoroughness is a benchmark ! Great review.
Just Brilliant! Very grateful for your insane level of knowledge and predisposition to teach.
There is so much useful information in this review, like the transistor radio noise oscillator. Why this is the best synth channel around. 👍🎶🏆
I wouldn't be surprised if they have already approached this channel for consultation purposes. Great breakdown. Useful insight. Thank you.
Great review as usual. Thanks for making these videos. 🙏
This video is absolutely brilliant! Can’t wait to get back home and play my little Typhon. 🚀
This machine is the best cost efficient analog ever. Excellent oscillators, fat filter, interesting interface, amazing and comprehensive effect section.
This is great thanks. Just got my Typhon today and this is real helpful.
Ridiculously good review!!! I ordered the Typhon a month ago with hopes it would be as half as deep as the options you’ve shown so far. As a new synth player I can’t be more excited to work out hours of ideas on this thing!
you & me, we're on the EXACT same page. I likey lots!! (worldwide community n' stuff.)
rocco harris let’s get to work!!! Hahaha. Lemme know when you get it and let’s trade some ideas
This is a very special little box.
Glad I jumped in early because the wait must be painful now it's clear how damn good this thing is.
If there is something- anything- hiding within a synth, loopop will find it and become its daddy.
I truly hope in my heart that Dreadbox will start a new entire serie like that one, having memory patch ; from dedicated bass lines to polyphonix.
Really
Exactly! Like that you could jam with your friends outside with electronic instruments
The patch memory is crucial for me. I like to recall exact patches for live performances.
sweeeet ideas - thankyo for showing. especially using two different step sequences to modulate CV 1 and 2 to create paraphonic sequences. and using FFM at the end on a drone style patch....so niceeee yessss
My most anticipated RUclips video ever! Thanks Ziv! Now I just need my Typhon delivered...
riiiiight?!?
I have been waiting for your review of this. thx.
Lovely synth... already own it... Dreadbox did it again.
Nice review
Thx 4 ur great tutorials and merry christmas.
Great! I was asking for this one, i feel im going to buy it after this review 😆
I'm sure manufacturers already know this but your fantastic reviews must lead to 100s of sales. I have personally bought three devices after watching your reviews (incuding a Typhon!)
Superb review of a fantastic sounding piece of kit. I definitely want one but I need to pay for the Polyend Tracker I've ordered first. This is next in line.
Thanks so much for your brilliant video! 💚
Great job on this - I just saw the announcement of the new algorithms - looking forward to trying them!
I was waiting for that video more than for the synth itself!
haha!!
So pretty much a ‘must have’. There’s none in the UK at the moment, but I’ve got my name on one arriving in October, by which time I’ll have read the manual... Can’t wait!
Love that Boards of Canada sounding chord progression at 31:07
yeah! I sat bolt upright in my chair at that haha
Brian Dressel thank you, i was trying to hopelessly remember what it reminded of
Excited to hear your thoughts on this synth!
Ok so good work, thanks.
On the beginning the flying hands were a pb but get used.
effects clipping happens in every synth with digital effects in my limited experience, thus proper gain staging inside of the synth itself is as necessary as gain staging a bunch of external gear correctly
thank you man i guess ill have to figure it out it's a great machine i was going to return it for no coast o coast device but i decided against it thank you for all great reviews
Thank You, I love this video!!😆
Hi. Very great review of what I believe is an amazing machine from the wonderful folks at dreadbox! (I agree with jump mode, but it is by no means a deal breaker) Easily one of the finest mono synths available to date, in my opinion of course :) Bye.
In the manual say you can change both knobs and fader under global from jump to catch. Maybe it's something they added in recent firmwares?
Got mine yesterday. What a melodic beast! Can't believe I haven't bought it earlier. It's perfect for techno, melodic genres and ambient. Only played with it for 1 night and have to say that it sounds just as good as my slim phatty or analog four.
Got one too 3 days ago and it’s my go to bass synth. I use it In combination with a circuit tracks and mc707.
Also the sequencer is a fun addition for typhon only jamming.
@@jo_eywhat's the benefit for using a sequencer like circuits if it has a built-in one those add that much more functionality to it?
I like your integration of the noise as an external oscillator. Makes you wonder why synth designers don't add it as a default.
Maaaan! What a cool synth. I'm almost ready to buy it. lol
Great review! Great tips!
Thanks :)
Nice one! There is a newer Typhon Firmaware with a lot of new modulation options, It would be very nice if you can make a quick update review.
Just ordered mine, can't wait to pair it with my Digitakt.
Damn I'm not usually one for standalone synths (although I spend too much time watching your reviews of them anyway) this one seems pretty slick for the price. May need one just for noodling or teaching my little cousins synthesis without throwing them in front of my modular.
I’m looking forward to buying one one of these months.
Bought it soon after that comment. And still loving it 3 years later ☺️
Very cool little synth. I'm nuts on Euro rack currently. Building a little system up. But this really appeals.
Glad I preordered this one a couple of weeks ago... And I think they have already announced firmware upgrades...
hard to resist, as you said and I don't think I'm going to resist.
Thank you, this helps very much! :-)
Just bought one and awaiting delivery - always check with loopop, Nick at sonic state and Bad Gear before buying 😊
I made my own eurorack typhon using the dreadbox chromatic modules and a milky way es
This Synth is a keeper, more than other ones that costs thousands
True, gems in all price ranges. The subharmonicon is double this, and the summit is something like 6-7x, but all are awesome.
@@Daphoid 👍🏻
I own a mono that costs twice the price and possesses less that half of the features. 😒 The good news is I use these effects on 3 other synths.
So true, it's beauty and the beast. You can write lovely ambient music with it. Or fantastic horror scores
Definitely
Hello thanks for this great review and more ;) just a little question what is the vst you 're using for visualition of the specter on left at 5'20 for exemple?
I don't think I said this in any of my comments. I really enjoy being able to control on some of the stereo fx the individual left and right, that's cool. And unique to me. Looking forward to the possible spaghetti video lol
Thank's Sinevibes!
I’m super happy with this synth, I had thought i would use it for bass only but in practice it’s an excellent lead sound generator too. The effects are superb and really add hugely to the sound, especially for ambient, but also chip tune and FX. DreadBox have really excelled here!
I just picked up mine today, lots to learn and this video is a wonderful help. Many of those built-in FX sound rather fine. Absolute bargain, I paid less than £350 (including VAT, our 20% "sales tax").
It looks like the latest firmware does audio over USB, which is handy, saving on channels on my audio interface.
Thanks for this! Is there a way to make the output mono, or to pan left or right?
I wonder, how many of the big and also smart small players in the synthesizer-industry tried to hire this guy.. or actually did.. or on how many synths he co-worked on already🤓
#loopop:
You're out of this world.
SpaceKadett!
This ist definatley the place to go for synth rewievs!
Got my Typhon yesterday..
Love it!
firmware 2.0.1 just released! it would be much appreciated if you would do a review.
BTW I really like your reviews, they are very professional, informative, in depth and clearly well thought out. Keep up the good work.
Very interesting ! Is it possible to change the presets with MIDI program changes ?
Thanks. Preordered and eagerly awaiting it. Saw they released new firmware today and future enhancements.
I can't seem to get the external audio input to work. Is there any setting or something one has to enable to use it? I'm positive the source is outputting audio and have connected it from its headphone out to the port on the typhon labeled "in".
Typhon does for affordable analog monos what the Microfeak does for affordable digital polys (i.e. takes my money)
I've been pondering various effects boxes (dispatch master pedal, mod duo x, that new poly pedal RMR reviewed) - but.... this thing is awesome... So is the subharmonicon......
Can I have a money tree?
lol, so true
Well there is also volca keys and, as far as I recall it’s polyphonic
Hooking them both with the Circuit tracks and the downloadable midi cc template makes them both next level because you can sidechain them with the samples and automate the knobs. Pretty sick. Novation has provided a template for both the MF and this.
would be the dreabox typhon a good combination with a arturia microfreak? could i sequence my patterns with the mf for the typhon. (those two would be my first synths, mf arriving in a few days)
The detune knob max amount is 24 semitones and I find this not enough for some Filter FM effects (5 octaves would be great)
Is it possible to achieve that amount through modulators? Maybe Sustain level to VCO2 pitch?
Best review of the Typhon! This thing's an amazing value - I'm so glad you reviewed it. Those sliders look like they have LEDs, yet i never saw them light up - i wonder if they plan to change that in future updates. I noticed they're sold out on their site (though still available at usual retailers), i hope they plan to make more.... I'd better buy one soon in case they don't :)
Thanks! I actually asked them about these LEDs - no plans for them. I can't see why they wouldn't make more...
They had similar LED sliders on earlier Nyx units, then removed them on later ones. Pretty much every review and retail demo sample had them, but were missing when I ordered one. Ended up returning it after several of the brass knob fasteners stripped the burrs on the plastic pot shafts after a few days.
I’ve been tying to minimize my synth collection to just the core elements. The Deluge, Microfreak, and Typhon might take me there. Maybe a preenFM2 but maybe not even needed.
Ok, let's see what it can do!
Brilliant idea, using the Transistor Radio for White Noise; a pleasant sound. I think I should multi-sample my Ham Radio equipment. Hmm ... didn’t I do that withTape Music, back in the 60’s? Maybe that’s why I’m drawn to this synth’s (Buchla type) continuous wave blend oscillator. Is there a 12-voice polyphonic version in the future?
Those Dr. Who noises made the filter mod wow I think I'm in
$70.00 off at GC. Picked one up yesterday!!!
Remember folks, "Everything sounds better with reverb.". LMAO! Great demo. This little jewel is on my want list.
As usual a great review! I would have loved to have heard a little something played besides a single note as the parameters are changed. It's hard to get a feel of what this would sound like in actual song form
Thanks! Indeed to goal of this video is to explain what the synth does and what its core sounds are - there are already quite a few sound demos of it and I'm sure many more will come on other channels
@@loopop yeh, your reviews are always the most concise and detailed of anyone!
hey @loopop . i might have got this wrong , but did you say you were reversing the polarity of the VCA env. by using LFO.. id there a reason you wouldn't just use one of the MODs as an inverted envelope to the VCA? is it to save mod sources? i have the typhon btw i love it. you also said that you could send one mod to multiple destinations, does that mean 3? one more thing!! i started using the Melda osciliscope and analyzer while i design sounds and it seems like you don't get in the "turning patches to shit mode" because you have visual feedback of the amount of mangling you are doing in real time.
1. I said the on-panel filter eg depth can't go into negative territory so if you want a negative envelope you can use one of the modulators, which does have a negative mod depth. 2. You can send one mod source to as many destinations as you like (though I didn't stress test it). 3. awesome!
@@loopop thanks for replying. I knew i didn't get it right!
glad to see it'll record sequences from an external source. was worried that I'd have to program them in with sliders! Just waiting for mine to ship it sounds great.
7:48 i'm a proud typhon owner but you're spot on right there. time to dive into that section of the oscillator. ps don't mind if i sample that passage haha
Always love the reviews,
What do you use to get see the visuals of the produced waveforms?
Del McDowell Thanks! I use MOscilloscope and MAnalyzer by a company called Melda - they’re free with some limitations in the MFreeFXBundle. Occasionaly I’ll use scopes by VCV
I would have liked to have seen an expression pedal input, and at least a couple of CV inputs, all of which could be modulation sources.
I've recently connected a pedal to my Korg Odyssey module, and there's something really satisfying about controlling the cut off with it, instead of just using key tracking. It feels a lot more expressive.
It's interesting though. I wouldn't rule out getting one.
wait a minute... ziv, at 28:30, you said "since this has midi out..." are you suggesting running the midi out from the typhon into another synth, then running that device's audio back into the typhon's external input for processing...?!?
Does anyone know of an AM/FM radio (or similar noise machine) with audio out like the one in the video? I figured this would be easy to find, but every model I've looked at so far only has a headphone jack. Would love to add some noise!
Perhaps user defined attack on jump from pre to control knob. Then vise versa with release. So smooth or hard depending on transitions in both directions. Perhap an additional folder per pre. Perhaps a global master toggle in master set up.
Probably a dumb question: would you deem the sound of this synth deeper and somewhat fatter than the nymphes? Or can the Nymphes do all of this equally?
A 'Medusa 2' with the effects section from Typhon built in would be truly awesome.
agree! i actually pass my Medusa into Typhon FX section input, very tasty team! 👌
@@martinlemay7037 hmmm... I think you just sold me the typhon...😊
how well does it acid? those glide options seemed promising
Just bought one to use next to my minitaur
Is the same effects applied to the external audio input as the internal synth? Or can you control them separately?
Same fx
The typhon is a modern classic, pick one up before they are oop
Word, can’t wait to get mine
is there any way to do multiple sounds and run them via midi on key step pro or is it just one sound doesn't seem like sequence different type of synths over eachother
one sound at a time
Does anyone know how to init patch this synth? I can't find anything in the manual.
I have aquestion about saving patch,
if for example I change somethig and I want to overwrite the patch, I have to find the patch change the name, because it gives me the first patch name and then press save.... am I doing something wrong? it's very annoing
I picked one up on sale a couple days ago. Man this is such a fun box. Loving Typhon. Dude your channel is so so good and I appreciate what you do. You’ve sold me on like 5 machines so far. Need to slow down my purchases but I’ll always watch. 💙⚡️⚡️⚡️🎛🎚
Where did you get it from and what was the sale price?
@@MrMarcLaflamme Got it from the dreaded guitar center. It was $379 if I remember correctly?
@@morganwebster6636 Oh nice! Okay cool. Might have to take a trip across the border.
I just bought a Typhon and Akai Mpc One. Don't understand why the pads don't play like keys when connected with MIDI.
can you fine tune the oscillators to have a 432 Hz pitch ?
seems like something I should get
Any comments on the USB power? I have had a lot of trouble with a Boutique that caused noise _on other gear_ when connected via MIDI cables to the same USB interface. Any idea if the input can be changed to run all the time even without needed to send a note input?
Don't power these with your computer - use a power brick or an external adapter. Not sure I understand the second half of your question
Loopop answered the question about input in the cons section at the end of the video
Silly question that I am too afraid to just try because I don't know enough about these things and don't want to break my Typhon :), what would happen if you looped the headphone into the audio in? Would you get some cool FM polyphony?
super synth! want it to do tracks. :)
