    Thanks for the great vids! You're a godsend for new purchases and have become my go-to for when I'm on the fence about a potential pickup as well. Having just scored one of these, it was nice to have a deep, but well-explained breakdown of its menu and mod system, as they will definitely take a little getting used to! Having sold all of my clunky / huge analog polys recently, this thing is gonna be great for injecting some of that analog warmth back into my music. I love the sounds already!

    I know folks keep harping about the lack of stereo, but try to keep in mind that you can create some really interesting stereo effects just by overdubbing, hardpanning L + R and adjusting timings on things like decay, release, and reverb tail or room shapes.
    Even having a slightly faster timing on one side of a decay on a filter envelope nets you some really fantastic sounds that you wouldn't otherwise get.
    Think about this more like an electric guitar where you're not likely to have stereo in real life in the first place. Most of your interesting results are going to come from overdubs and subtle differences between tracks.

    • @NunyaB1s
      @NunyaB1s Год назад

      @@RoyceWiz the problem arises from phrase sampling (like drum breaks from records.) Typically those cuts have been produced with stereo content especially toms and cymbals spread across the stereo field to better mimic a drum kit in real life. Not that THAT is a problem per se but folks are tripped into thinking that stereo is necessary *everywhere* which is a myth.

    well I find the menu system quite elegant and it's cool you can go without a display. The hardest to access menu options are also those you are less likely to tweak often so it works. I have the neutron and there menu options that are really more obtuse than this; I think it's the same for the 0 coast. Maybe encoders with a light would have been easier because it's true having to reset faders is annoying; but I'm not sure it was the aesthetic they wanted to go to. the lack of stereo with a reverb is also not great; but you can always add your own. Honestly these days I'm more into virtual analog soft synths for poly synths because it's simply more convenient in the context of a full composition (and I like a bit of stereo) but I really like the features and format of this synth; if I ever feel I need a poly analog I'd pick this without hesitation. The form factor; preset and midi implementation also means it can work as a "deluxe plugin" without the trouble of having a full fledged synth with a five octave midi keyboard in your studio.

    @SolidtraxNL 2 года назад

    Great review and tips as usual mr loopop, kudos! - This synth is really fat sounding and has some really cool features - especially the LFO with its oneshot mode is cool! And why don't all synths have two filters (hpf and lpf as a minimum)? Really great design decision of dreadbox! Suggestion for the LFO mode would be to have a high and low speed in one. This would be more convenient in our opinion. Then use shift (after moving the LFO speed fader instead of before) or another button to have fine control f.e. - since the size of the sliderrange is limited they probably implemented lo and hi speed. Sound wise, if it was stereo and with all the extra features (lfo-destinations rock!) and a chorus instead of reverb (dsp - so should be doable) it could be a Alpha Juno 3 in our opinion. For studio use the menu system is doable an no issue. Especially if there will be an editor or vst editor this is sorted for studio usage. For live, this is another story. It seems to be complicated and very easy to make mistakes. To sum up, its sounds really good for a great price, so thanks again for this very, very in-depth review!

    • @Xul
      @Xul 2 года назад +1

      @@ptkelly80 Yeah, barebones effects, no stereo output, only USB power, no display, no proper MIDI. And most importantly, a really cumbersome UI with a shift function jungle that you have to re-learn each time you use this synth after a while.
      It sounds great but it's not like you don't have options nowadays. Their direct competitors would be something like the Minilogue, Deepmind or the Cobalt - and all of them seem to offer a much better experience.
      I don't quite understand why people seem to praise every damn new release despite obvious flaws - especially knowing that Dreadbox can actually do much better. But I guess that's also how we went from faders and knobs to diagrams and membrane buttons at the end of the 80s.

    Question: in tri or duo can u individually tune each OSC? Somehow, it just doesn’t seem so clear like it was for example on a Behringer model D.
    Oops you answered this-it’s addressed as altering intervals in chord mode

    I have a question about not being able to add negative modulation. With the way this is designed is it not possible to have, for example, the modulation wheel close the filter? Or is that not what that means? Intrigued by this, but this seems like it could be a pretty big drawback for sound design...

    Always a clean review here TY. Now, if only they
    a) made it eurorack-able.
    b) when I hear you say "it's kind of like navigating in Boston, you will get lost first time" - this highlights probably the #1 gripe of every synth... menu diving. If it needs a piece of paper you need to keep handy... no!!! I dont want 50 pieces of paper cluttering up the studio. I (and everyone) want knobs, sliders and switch selectors! I get it, they were building it down to a price point so that they could aim it at "polyphonic, good sound, cheaper than any other poly". but I won't buy it. It sounds super awesome but they made it a total pain in the butt to use.

    Dreadbox made the Typhon. They know screens are helpful. The deal here is the pandemic and supply chain issues and prices. If car companies can get the chips, synth companies are going to have limitations too. Within those constraints, this is what was possible, and I think it’s wonderful. I hope to own one when it’s time to buy a new synth next year. This year it’s Typhon for me, but I strongly considered this instead.

    I wish it didn’t sound so junoish. Really reminds me of the my deepmind while doing some different tricks, its core sounds so similar it’s a really tough call. I was waiting so long for this, but when dreadbox was demoing it I was really like…”wait that sounds familiar” I love it but I’d essentially feel like selling one or the other down the road. I love what this does with that sound, seems very inspiring. Changing my mind maybe…

    I''m new to synths and want to know what's the difference between running 6 monophonic synths instead of one polyphonic synth? Footprint size?

    • @loopop
      @loopop  11 месяцев назад +1

      yes, plus central control. With 6 mono synths (unless you wanted a different sound on each), you'd need to change the controls on each to maintain a similar timbre (or do it via MIDI). If they didn't have a polychain feature built in, you'd also need some sort of MIDI dispatcher software/hardware to send each subsequent note to a different synth. It would also likely be more expensive. Bottom line, don't do it, certainly not as a beginner...

    • @MichaelRohaly
      @MichaelRohaly 2 года назад +1

      Well, it sounds great. An important thing to know about it is that it does not respond well to velocity changes: the envelopes will pop and click. Roland's response to me: "I think this is due to the original system-1 being built with a fixed velocity keyboard and the 1m running the same system program. As it stands now it may be best to use it without velocity for patches where you find the clicks very noticeable." So be aware. Other than that it's a pretty interesting weird thing, get it used for cheap.

    • @loopop

      You're always overwriting the user preset in the slot - initially the user presets are the same as their parallel factory preset, so there are no empty presets

      @@loopop Thanks for the reply! I'm still confused though. On the Typhon, I mess with a preset and then I want to save it as a new user preset, then I go to save and it lets me choose where I save it. The screen lets me know whether I'm overwriting another preset or an init patch. How can I make sure I'm not overwriting a preset that I made before and want to keep, other than writing out an actual physical list, and keeping track that way?
