that’s so cool to hear, i spend so much time in bookshops and libraries but always overthink talking to the booksellers/librarians! any tips for striking up a small conversation? :)
@@izzieh7335 Ask us what we're currently reading or what some of our favorites are! I'm currently reading Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, and had a great convo with a customer who had read it and was buying Circe. Some of us are more introverted than others, but most of us are working in bookstores because we love books, and books are often the topic that will bring us out of our shells!
@@jack_in_the_books AAahhhh!! I got a replyyy finally omg!! And you sir have made my day!! Btw i cant wait for your podcast/bookclub mixture, sounds like a really good idea
I have a book recommendation: “Mornings in Jenin”. It deals with the conflict in Palestine and is very eye-opening, but is also a beautiful, moving book that will break your heart. I think it’d be so interesting to review in light of the recent events.
What I loved about living in the UK was the endless amount of bookstores, especially charity shop book stores. I absolutely loved them. This video brought back memories 🥰
I literally just finished Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, and it was a rollercoaster, it made me feel so melancholic, but I did find myself rooting for Eleanor and her journey.
I'm at uni in Scotland but Cambridge is my home town. This video was just like a hug from home for me. I absolutely love the haunted bookshop but I really hope you visited the Indigo cafe next door (really lovely place). Thank you for the nostalgia
Eleanor Oliphant is such a good book! I especially adored the friendship(s) in that one, but be prepared to be completely destroyed, because omg I was not okay. And Cambridge is beautiful as always 💛
Find both of your channels really help me to fall in love again with reading. Life can get a little difficult, and push you to say goodbye to little joys. You make me to say hello to a old dear friend. Thank you
My sister went to uni at Cambridge and I used to visit her there multiple times a year and I even lived there for one summer, and I think it’s one of the most beautiful little city I’ve ever visited! The city center is small and cozy, all the old buildings are beautiful and the surrounding “country side” around Cambridge is also so beautiful. There is an apple orchard not too far from Cambridge where you can get scones and tea and it’s such a wonderful place! I really miss Cambridge ❤️
gosh your channel brings me so much comfort!!! i always come here whenever i want to feel safe & it’s like i’m just sitting & listening to a friend talk about books it’s veryveryvery comforting & warm & i love it :”-)
A couple years ago having fun meant going out with my friends and drinking, now it's putting on my comfiest pj's and watching book hauls on RUclips then getting the books and reading them. I'm 25 and proud of myself.
Yes, Eleanor. The good thing is you didn't start reading it in the train. You would have missed your stop! It's so captivating. And so heavy and easy at the same time. The end will knock you out.
If you go back to Cambridge, I'd recommend G. David, another bookseller just around the corner from the haunted bookshop - it has very similar vibes, and quite good prices for the most part! (There's also a fabulous antique section that you can drool over)
I live just outside Cambridge and it is so so weird seeing you, one of my favourite RUclipsrs, exploring Cambridge and going to places that I go to or walk past almost every single day ... So so weird
I need longer videos from you, you are helping me through the pandemic. I'm a healthcare worker and every day after work I binge your videos, sometimes the same one (what can I say, you're funny) Just wanted to let you know that you're helping this one Pharmacist all the way in India
I really recommend ‘The Melting’ by a Belgian writer called Lize Spit! It’s the English translation of her debut novel ‘Het Smelt’. I thought it was a really captivating story and it’s one of my favourite books 🌼
jack, rn at my place the weather's like it's gonna rain and you just showed me 8 minutes of places filled with books. THE UNIVERSE WANTS ME TO HOARD BOOKS THE LONGING IS KILLING ME
Although your taste in books isn't really my cup of tea, I do really enjoy watching your videos. The passion you show for your subject gives me that bit of extra motivation to keep on pursuing my own passion, even when things seam a bit bleak in my head. :)
Loved this video and the books! Would love to see you do this for other cities as well! I'm not from the UK and love anything that combines bookish content and little glimpses into new (to me) cities! 😍

Also very pleased to hear that you are also someone who has a natter with everyone you come across, my friends absolutely rib me for it haha
With everything that is happening in India at the moment, I have no idea when I can visit a bookstore again. So watching this video made me happy. I am now interested in Kohra Ghana and as I can read Hindi, I will try to pick it up sometime.
highly recommend the antiquarian book shop too !! shame you missed it, they're doing books for like a quid each & have the cutest little basement of books - the entrance is hidden behind a church near king's parade
If you can read in English I recommend ordering on book depository, I’m in the same situation where in Switzerland a book costs twice the usual price so I now order new releases online and shop classics secondhand
@@ola0915 I’ve heard about book depository and it seems nice because of the free ship but I never ordered anything there. I bought all my English books on amazon because of a sale where you buy 3 books and the cheapest one is for free.
Ahh I went to Cambridge with my Dutch high school like two or three years ago. This video made me fall in love with the city all over again! It’s just so cute

I just picked up Hamnet from Morrison’s of all places yesterday and am super excited to read it! Currently most of the way through Such a Fun Age and it is marvellous. And Eleanor Oliphant is 👌🏻
Gotta say, Hamnet is a truly spectacular book. I sobbed through the middle section. It reads very similarly to a Shakespearean tragedy (no surprise there, it's immaculately researched and structured) so you get that wonderful surge of catharsis at the end of the book as well. Can't wait to see what you think of it!
Such perfect timing-just finished Julia Whelan’s My Oxford Year, so your blog shots are especially captivating. Also reading Hamnet now. Synchronicity from the weird land of the US.
Jack, could u do some videos about how ur degree was set up? like what are the modules, what is their objective, what books did you read, what did u take away from different courses... I'm from Spain and we don't do English lit here (only philology) so I would be really interested in seeing how the english uni education system is set up! much love xx
Noticed that you haven’t read Hamnet! It’s an amazing piece of world building, albeit a bit slow to get into. It’s a pity you didn’t get the waterstones special edition (it’s a red hardcover and makes the H on the cover look so much more ✨majestic✨)
@@vaibhavigupta5892 It definitely develops a lot of the setting for Stratford in his time, which is really informative and well-researched by the author, I believe. There are some snapshots into life in London as well!
