This is what I say always, the Celtics had it all to be the best team of all time for the whole decade of the 80s if 1- Pete Maravich stayed healthy and motivated, 2-Bird did not break his back 3-Bill Walton did not break either and 4-Len Bias did not overdose. You take any two of these factors away and the Celtics get 6 , you take all 4 and they take 10 in a row plus several MVPs and finals MVPS for several of his players, not only Bird. Being as it was , Celtics 86 has a solid case to be the GOAT team we have seen, removed from the Dream Team.

This team is better than 96 Bulls. Chicago would have no answer for those towers (Mchale, Parish, Walton). And the BBall IQ was out of this world, plus the incredible chemistry around the team. OH, and there was also that guy named Larry.
Kind of hard to argue with the 86 Celtics lineup that had 5 future Hall of Famers in it, because despite how you play, it's still a team sport. They moved the ball so fast that the cameras often didn't catch up with it. Who is the GOAT? There should just be a short list of the greatest teams and leave it at that. Pick your top 5 teams and it doesn't matter in what order, or in what year. I was a Bucks fan back then, but I slowly lost interest in the Pro game as it morphed into what it is today.
40-1 at home insane - have to agree if the enter playoff finals with home court advantage, its in the bank with a clutch player like bird not letting that game slip away. I agree they match up very well vs west/chamberlain, the best of the spurs, even bulls because of their size and DJ wouldn’t let Michael go for for 50 every game. Pippin would be a tough matchup
I wonder what percentage of shots nowdays are uncontested 3 pointers? I’ve lost interest in the nba. Basketball used to be a team sport back in the good old days.
Hey man those young Rockets with Dream and Sampson took these guys to six games (!) -- not bad! Too bad those Rockets imploded from coke and Sampson injuries...
Great team, no doubt. Greatest team. Philly team that set a (then) record for most wins. Chamberlain et al. Cunningham, a hall of famer, came off the bench.
Glad you brought that 67 team up Alot of people I'm comment section may not be old enough or knowledgeable enough to remember how good 67 sixers were, celtics win 11 straight if it wasn't for this team and speaking of passing, Chamberlain passing out the post was never seen before...wilt was already a monster scorer, rebounder, shot blocker but to add that dimension to his skillset was beyond legendary...I feel 67 sixers is the team that could match-up against 86 celtics the best
I've said it for decades that the 1985-86 Boston Celtics were very possibly the greatest team of all time. A close 2nd might be the 1969 Celtics and 3rd, the 1984-85 LA Lakers.
Aight good brother I love 🧡 🏀 the video as always. But good brother I’ve got an inquiry 🧐 and I think you can help. Cmon man let’s go! (Please, respectfully, amigo) ☮️ 🏀
Not sure if your old enough or knowledgeable enough to know about the 67 sixers but that team in my humble opinion would be number one or two next to 86 celtics...sixers was 46-4 first fifty games that year and celtics win 11th straight if it wasn't for 67 sixers...I have 83 sixers, 87 lakers and 96 bulls to round out my top five, respectively none of the millennium championship teams Crack my top five!!! (Rodman already stated that there were better teams in eighties than 96 bulls and thou I like them there biggest liability would have been at center with luc Longley, 83 Moses malone or 86 parrish/walton combo would have been to much for bulls to overcome)
The 67-68 Sixers who ended bostons 8 straight titles….& the 71-72 lakers who won 33 straight are the best teams ever! (BTW: WNC was on both those teams!)
What the heck is McHale talking about, saying they went "something like 16-10" after losing that Christmas Day game against the Knicks? 16-10 at any point during that season would have been absolutely horrible! I think Boston was around 18-1 following Christmas Day, and they were never threatened after that game.
The most accurate way I could describe the '86 Celtics in terms of their place all-time is: THE '86 CELTICS WOULD BE AN EVEN MONEY BET IN A 7 GAME SERIES AGAINST ANY NBA TEAM EVER. Would they win? We'll never know.

They would have won the championship in 87 as well if Len Bias hadn't died, the Celtics were one player short against the Lakers in 87, that player would have been Bias.
If Lenny hadn't passed the Pistons Bad Boys Dynasty wouldn't have
happened. The Celts also would have been the one team to challenge
the Bulls in the 90's.
The combination of len bias and reggie Lewis would of been fascinating to watch celtics late eighties and early nineties
86 team was phenomenal
This team is better than 96 Bulls.
Chicago would have no answer for those towers (Mchale, Parish, Walton).
And the BBall IQ was out of this world, plus the incredible chemistry around the team.
OH, and there was also that guy named Larry.
I agree 100 percent! That 86 Celtics team would be any of those Jordan teams!!
Wish they would have played LA in the finals that year. Would have been great matchup.
There's no doubt the '86 Celtics were the greatest team of all time and the '87 Lakers and '96 Bulls agree with me!
Hard to argue!
Definitely the best team ever. Hands down 💯.
I don’t know how you put the ‘96 team at #1, when they couldn’t beat the Celtics ever. Celtics team had 5 HOF players. Bulls had two.
That Celtics team is certainly right there on the short list.
Is it Shawn or Sean
They were amazing. I take them, as well as the 71-71 Lakers and the 82-83 Sixers over the best Bulls teams.
The Sixers swept the Lakers in the 83 Finals. That is no small feat. I would put them right up there, too.
I agree 40-1 at home is insane 😳
Best match-up for this team however would have been 67 sixers not 72 lakers
I wonder what percentage of shots nowdays are uncontested 3 pointers? I’ve lost interest in the nba. Basketball used to be a team sport back in the good old days.
i would agree.......
The brazilians pride themselves with the JOGO BONITO in soccer, the 86 Celtics played the JOGO BONITO in basketball.
1986 Celtics are greatest team ever followed by1987 Lakers, 1989 Pistons and 1996 Bulls, the other teams had better bench than Bulls.
It’s not a hotdog till you put some Bird sauce on it.
I watch all these old basketball clips and I think Gee basketball use to be fun to watch , not like now where everyone stands around .
Hey man those young Rockets with Dream and Sampson took these guys to six games (!) -- not bad! Too bad those Rockets imploded from coke and Sampson injuries...
The 1992 Dream Team !
Great team, no doubt.
Greatest team.
Philly team that set a (then) record for most wins.
Chamberlain et al. Cunningham, a hall of famer, came off the bench.
Glad you brought that 67 team up
Alot of people I'm comment section may not be old enough or knowledgeable enough to remember how good 67 sixers were, celtics win 11 straight if it wasn't for this team and speaking of passing, Chamberlain passing out the post was never seen before...wilt was already a monster scorer, rebounder, shot blocker but to add that dimension to his skillset was beyond legendary...I feel 67 sixers is the team that could match-up against 86 celtics the best
I can see the argument despite my being a Bulls/MJ fan. How many future HoF’ers on that the ‘86 Celtics team? 6? Or just 5?
Not selfish
I've said it for decades that the 1985-86 Boston Celtics were very possibly the greatest team of all time. A close 2nd might be the 1969 Celtics and 3rd, the 1984-85 LA Lakers.
69 celtics just peak at the right time...celtics had better teams in the sixties than 69 team and 87 lakers was the best of lakers eighties teams
Just imagine the 1987 team with len bias
my top 3 teams in my opinion 96 bulls 86 celtics 87 lakers
Celtics, Lakers, Bulls in that order greatest team of alltime.
just your opinion and i respect that and i disagree with that also...just my opinion
Holy 💩…. They even showed McHale getting an assist…… I think it was the only one…… of his career? 🤔
Aight good brother I love 🧡 🏀 the video as always. But good brother I’ve got an inquiry 🧐 and I think you can help. In my opinion the 1996 Bulls 🐂 , the 1986 Celtics 🍀, and then the 1972 Lakers 🏀… but who comes after that to round out the top 🔝 five…? 🧐 🤔 🤷♂️ And any team not winning 🏆 a championship to close out that season is disqualified from the list.
(Rodman already stated that there were better teams in eighties than 96 bulls and thou I like them there biggest liability would have been at center with luc Longley, 83 Moses malone or 86 parrish/walton combo would have been to much for bulls to overcome)
edit Rachel Nichols out of this video
The 67-68 Sixers who ended bostons 8 straight titles….& the 71-72 lakers who won 33 straight are the best teams ever!
(BTW: WNC was on both those teams!)
Top 6 best nba teams of all time:
1) 2017 Warriors
2) 2019 Warriors
3) 2015 Warriors
4) 2016 Warriors
5) 2018 Warriors
6) 2022 Warriors
What the heck is McHale talking about, saying they went "something like 16-10" after losing that Christmas Day game against the Knicks? 16-10 at any point during that season would have been absolutely horrible! I think Boston was around 18-1 following Christmas Day, and they were never threatened after that game.
McHale said 60 and 10....
The original Dream Team is the greatest team ever assembled in any sport.
Americans.
Theres an entire world of other sports out there dude.
The late 70s- early 80s west indian cricket team
The australian mens and womens hockey teams in the late 90s.
The argentinian soccer team in the 80s.
Theres fkn THREE with a better claim to 'best team of all time' and they dominated an era not a single tournament where they were basically playing against amateurs.
Of course you could also throw in the 1948 australian cricket team. Which, of course as you know, had the statistically greatest sportsman of all time, Sir Donald George Bradman.
@@sugarnads I've only lived in Asia and North America. Sorry, I don't know too much about cricket. My main sport is Table Tennis nowadays and I grew up on basketball.
@@ericd1084 so the greatest basketball team would be a reasonable statement.
@@ericd1084 mj cant even claim greatest athlete etc.
Dg bradman was etwtistically teice as good as anyone to ever play cricket.
And heather mackay was unbeaten throughout her entire career both amateur and professional as a squash player.
Never dropped a set. Utter dominance.
@@sugarnads I stand by my statement. No other team has ever been that dominant in any sport that I've seen in the last 45 years.
Fans are always comparing players and eras. The only match-up I wish could've materialized is Bird vs Russell.
Bird would win! Once Russell missed a shot he wouldn’t get the ball back!
Kc Jones who played on those great celtics teams during sixties already said 86 celtics were the best and red agree with him so that kills that debate!!!
@mikegillins4992 not even the same question. Read the words kid.
@@PoliticusRex632 I'm a grown man not a kid...when you mentioned Russell verses bird it has to be mentioned in context with there teams (this isn't boxing or tennis) different positions so you wouldn't get one on one match-up
Like Chamberlain vs Russell or bird vs doc and kc Jones already put that comparison to rest case closed!!!
I would have agreed with you that the 1986 Celtics WOULD HAVE BEEN the greatest team of all time....Had Len Bias lived.....Without a doubt and no question, the dynasty would have ran roughshod over the Showtime Lakers had Bias been in their lineup....
Hard claim to make, seeing the Lakers beat them in 1985 and 1987.
It's more in reference to single season teams
The 87 Lakers and the 96 Bulls. Is this guy from Boston?
The 83 Sixers is the best team I ever saw play.
I like 83 sixers but the 67 sixers were the best team I seen play
Hate to bust your balls but in 1986 the Celtics went 45-1 at home & 50-1 including playoffs. The next year they Lost 2 at home but lost the 7 th game when Larry Bird missed the last shot. With 2 seconds after Magics hook runner birds ball was dead on & just missed. what people didn’t know is that bird had gotten into a fight and broke his right hand.
Hate to bust your balls but Bird's missed shot was in game 4 not game 7. This was in the 87 Finals and LA went up 3 to 1 at that point. Also Bird's injured hand was before the 85 Finals.
You think the '96 Bulls were the best team ever but you may not be considering how the league was watered down since 1986 with 6 expansion teams.
