Great review, I had an 15 FRS Automatic I DD for 2.5 years. Seems every RUclips car reviewer trashes the automatic without looking at the bigger picture. With that said in mind I love and will always drive a manual car but it’s hard to knock on this automatic it’s a proven/bulletproof transmission. I’m coming from driving manual Civic Si’s, Honda Fit, A70 Supra, G35, TSX, Celica GT.
The automatic in the new GR86 has been improved as well. It's really good honestly.

@@CruiseControl1 exactly the Aisin A960E 6 Speed has been in production since 2006. One cavat I wish the GR86/BRZ had was I wish it had a liftback or a 4 door variant like an 1Gen IS300/Altezza size.
A liftback would be ideal to me. I would love that.

I currently have a 2013 FR-S and since hearing about a second gen made me happy as Toyota/Subaru decided not to axe the line. In this day and age of NPC vehicles (SUVs/EVs), it is nice that we are still getting a new, affordable, driver oriented, and fun little 2+2 sports car for around 25k USD. In 10 years, these types of cars might not even exist anymore. Thank you Toyota/Subaru creating this car and thank you CruiseControl for this review.

That's a good point, never thought of them as npc vehicles but yeah they're literally vehicles built for people who act like npcs.

You are right about needing brake pads cooling in mountain roads like pike's peak, Colorado, where gate personnel will check the brake temperature heat at one of the stops!

Been driving a manual as my daily for almost a decade, the local dealership has a GR86 in auto and at first it was a deal breaker, but after driving it a little I’m actually considering it
My car is at Toyota right now with a crap ton of RTV in the oil catch can which is blocking oil getting to the engine so I want you to know it’s a big issue in all GR86 right now

@@CruiseControl1 I would really love it but in the country where I live Toyota is thinking about bringing only the manual transmission, in Europe the manual is so popular that except for premium cars (D segment cars and ahead) everybody has it.
I hope Toyota brings both.
Not going to lie, prefer the automatic, i am LAZY most of the time and my days of shifting all the time are over. Most days i just want to put her in Drive and let her go, im not racing anyone, don't need to prove myself to anyone, and for those days of feeling throttle happy and i want to shift when i want to shift, i will throw her in manual mode and shift it when i am ready ...
GRANTED with that said, i do own a manual and i love to shift it, i love driving that car but the shifting does get tiresome and with it being a 4 puck sprung clutch, its kinda rough on launch especially in stop and go traffic, going in and out of 1st gear with that clutch ...... can get tiresome FAST

I just put a deposit down on a Halo white premium with AT. It's in transit to the dealer, should be here the first week in February. This is going to be the longest 2-3 weeks of my life!

@@CruiseControl1 - My dealership showed 4 in transit with no photos posted so I called the salesman and told him which one I wanted and put down a deposit so no one else can grab it out from under me, lol. I've been driving a Halo white 860 limited edition for 4 years now with my only complaint being the lack of HP and torque. If this new one takes care of that problem I'm just going to be happy and leave it like it is. (Maybe a supercharger after I pay it off, lol.)
Sounds like you stepped into a great deal then. The GR86 definitely solves the tq dip, and it feels much faster than the previous gen. I think you are going to love it.

Get this one ! The back seat is useable.
I love the car and the backseat can be flipped down to carry a set of track wheels and tires so that is a big plus.

I like it a lot but wish there was a proper premium option will full 2 tone leather and maybe some colour options. I guess you could get something custom done for around £2000 extra. The last generation interior really put me off the GT86 and the lack of acceleration didn't help either.
The interior is very much improved and the acceleration issue has been 100% resolved. I think it would be worth it to add the custom work like you listed.
@@CruiseControl1 I have test driven an mx5 a couple of times are really enjoyed it. They have gotten very overpriced lately though. I do love the convertible element but they are also very small, not very practical and I prefer the GR86 visually. I'm also considering my favourite Cayman (981 S) and the M340i or maybe even an M2 comp. I want something that feels quick and exciting to drive but is not all about grip so you can easily do some skids. A car that can still feel fun and exhilarating at regular speeds and sounds good. How easy is it to slide the back end and drift a bit at 30 - 50 mph in the 86?
I love the 981 Cayman, the S model is a great buy. I would want the GTS model with the Alcantara seats and steering wheel in manual.
The RF Miata was great but the Neptune Blue GR86 is something special.

One major difference with the old Auto is that the new one will not Downshift due to the rev limiter. The old one would blimp all the way up to the limit. Something that I think is disappointing but engineering dictates what needs to be done.
I was able to downshift though in the new one.
@@CruiseControl1 you can only if your in the rev range and under some speeds, the old one didn’t have that limit obviously a different engine design, with more cars available for reviews this might be or not be an issue.. as a Daily drive it won’t 😊

Yes in the premium trim with the automatic.
Here in Austria we have to wait till April for ordering, if toyota doesn't cut it out till then. If the price is right I really looking into it to maybe pre-order it.

How ever I am not 100% sure to get one, I am also waiting for the new Honda type R, the price and aviability will decide.

We don't get the GR Yaris here so Toyota is making a GR Corolla for our market so that is something I'm also waiting to drive.

@@CruiseControl1 here we have the GR Yaris (starting price 38k) the thing is where is the GR86 gonna sit with price , for the Type R i can tell the old FK8 modell was at 46k so the new will sit probably at 50k . but lets see what it brings.

Type R here started at $37k, I hope the new one starts around the same.

That is a great question, both are great and I think it comes down to personal preference.
Would u recommend for auto or manual in city life ?
Auto will be easier for city life and it's actually a really good auto. The manual is more fun and you feel more involved. However the paddles on the GR86 are better than the paddles on the new Supra.
@@CruiseControl1 is the auto pretty terrible on this generation? In terms of fun on driving, Is it only noticeable when doing illegal racing or track drive ?
I would not say it's terrible. It's actually pretty good and fun for an auto.

@@CruiseControl1 not quite i still have to confirm the purchase and talk finance payments for me to ofc pay but it’s hard rn for work so i might not even be able to get the car anymore during the time i purchased it i was well with work etc and i was making more then enough to afford it but they removed hrs from everyone for 2 months messed up alot unfortunately but its life definitely subbing tho i like your review more then most

There’s still no reason to buy an automatic of this car. Most cars you can argue it because it’s fAsTeR thAN thE mAnUaL but the auto is significantly slower and much less fun
I'm not one to defend an automatic because I would prefer the manual myself. However, after driving the super automatic versus the GR86 automatic if someone's a fan of automatics, I think the GR86 automatic is more fun than the super automatic. But yes, of course I'd rather buy the manual GR86.
@@CruiseControl1 I understand why people buy automatics but it just makes me mad that they buy THIS car in an automatic because this car is the poster child for the last hurrah of the manual transmission and buying it in an automatic is telling Toyota that their efforts of keeping the manuals alive are for naught
I'm just glad they make the car at all and you're right it is still best to buy the manual.
@@Dragon228833 im just saying bro, people buying the auto is the only reason this car is still alive. They just make more money and sell more cars with auto being an option. And the other harsh truth is most people dont want manuals anymore. Unless you live in a non-crowded state (i envy you), daily traffic jams and crowded cities is fucking terrible with a manual. I dont ever want one again unless i get lucky and can own 2 separate cars I want.
The automatic in this gen is pretty good too. I still prefer the manual but the auto is good.
