- Bob Boilen | November 28, 2016 - When I greeted Margo Price in the NPR garage before her Tiny Desk performance, tears were streaming down her face. It was Wednesday morning, Nov. 9, the day after the 2016 election. For her - as for many Americans - it was a stunning and bewildering moment in time, a day when life and the everyday took on new meaning. And so when she and her band began to play "All American Made," a song she's sung many times before, those words about America's changes and failures in the 21st century seemed even more powerful.
Margo Price is a Nashville-based musician, the sort of country artist that captures the hearts of those both inside and outside the country-music scene. Her debut album, Midwest Farmer's Daughter, is one of the brightest moments in country in a very strong year.
As this Tiny Desk progresses, even "Four Years Of Chances," her song of a love gone wrong, feels less about a lousy husband and more about presidential politics. She dedicates her third and final song, "About To Find Out," to Donald Trump; she says it was originally written about a "musician acquaintance of mine who's a complete sociopath." When the song ends, she rips open her red cowboy shirt to reveal a T-shirt with the words "Icky Trump"- a play on the title of The White Stripes' song "Icky Thump," which criticizes the U.S.'s immigration policies. She smiles, wipes a tear away: It seems cathartic, but temporary.

I am 70 years old. Grew up listening to the great folk artist. She is truly an Amazing American artist. A real songwriter with something to say. You will not hear her songs on commercial country radio that play what has become the typical Nashville pop music. We all can enjoy her music on RUclips.
I'm not a country guy at all, but I saw Margo and her band perform last summer in Toronto and I was completely blown away. So much talent. So unbelievably good live. I became an instant fan.
She may be the next Loretta.
Now that they don't play good music on the radio anymore, I'm thankful for places like RUclips where you can find great stuff like this.
Absolutely
I just saw her on PBS Amanpour and im now a faithful follower because I love what she represents. Much Love
Came here to hear an acoustic version of WAP. Now I'm a big Margo Price fan. What a band! Thanks Cardi B!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Saw her as the opening act for Chris Stapleton and she is a firecracker live on stage. I enjoyed her more than stapleton. Never even heard of her.
Her and Marcus King opening for Stapleton at Bethel woods in July. Cant wait!
Finally some real country music.
I gave you 14 minutes of chances to hear something good.
Margo is the best!👍👍👍
I Saul Margo about 10 years ago when she was doing the small circuit with pokey Lafarge in Des Moines, Iowa. I’m really glad she’s making the big time. I enjoy her music very much.
This raw version of American Made put a tear in my eye. Love her and the band! Great live show too❤
That was amazing! One of the best tiny dest concerts I've ever seen
I keep coming back to this... Gotta love Margo Price. Headed down to see her tonight at Red Rocks. (She's opening for Wilco, but I'll be there for her.)
I'm 72 and you are the first country music artist I have ever liked. You would have been the first one who would have been accepted in our university coffee houses. Viva Margo, Jeremy, and the band!!
Gerry R we never needed you. You need us
Wow, "All American Made" is amazing!
She's got a great band with her. Never forget. They listen, adjust, and overcome any venue. Truly can't say how great her band is.
Wonderful. The finest country artiste around at present. Keeping it real!
This is the artist I've been waiting years for.
She is an absolute gem!
Finally after a long time a kick ass live performer again! :)
Damn! Whatta voice! glad to hear folk aspects coming back to Nashville country
Tiny Desk concerts is perfect setup to enjoy lyrics and feel the soul to soul communication with the art of music...
Micah Hulscher rocking the keys. So cool on the piano, owning it!! So glad to see and hear Margo and crew
Shout out to Josh Rogosin. Recording and Mixing is absolutely spot on.
Lets the performance shine even more
Girrrrrrrl, thank you! I’m another singer who doesn’t fit the mold, but am sure I should sing my song ,as definitely as you should sing yours. Amen 🙏
If her and Jak Wayne Bollé play a show together we might get to have a true outlaw country revival. That is if he can finally get his record done so he can maybe get a record contact and get outta the shadows of obscurity.
Link to your music, please.
yup... one of the best Tiny Desk episodes... top notch musicians and a stellar voice...
Old school country music. I love it.
She is GREAT!
Not many artists win me over so quickly!
I'm a picky musician who knows what he likes, and Margo is the "Real Deal"!
She's a Rocker, She's a Folkie, She's a Country Girl...True "Americana "!❤
Beautiful voice! Beautiful sound! Great songs!
Love the songs. Love the voice. And last but not least - LOVE THE BAND!
She is going to be a BIG STAR if there is any justice in this world!
There isn't much justice left, and corporate radio only wants recording artists, luckily margo has the backing of jack white and third man records, so we'll have plenty more of her music in the coming years
2023 she touring STRAYS everywhere
Thank you for the fabulous tiny desk concerts!!!! I would love to see The Head and The Heart play here sometime!!
Ich liebe diese Musik! Großartig!
I love her so much
Did anyone else realize that her bass player is the same guy who played for Sturgill Simpson
Yup. Kevin Black played bass in Sturgill's Sunday Valley band.
@blackdaddy!
I looked him up after wondering why he left Sturgill. And that led me here.
Love this video! In my option Margo Price, Tommy Ash and Elizabeth Cook are the real deal these days.
I heard "I put a hurtin' on the bottle" the other week on our local NPR station and was absolutely certain I wouldn't be able to find it anywhere outside of vinyl at a garage sale just based on the sound. I looked Margo Price up anyway tonight, just because it's been stuck in my head for that long. I found this, I went out and hit up amazon immediately. The Current plays plenty of old school music I've never heard of, but finding out that I can actually buy this digitally pleased the shit out of me. I'm now the proud owner of a lot of truly fantastic music.
I was never a huge country fan growing up, unless you counted the stuff from 10-20 years before I was born, but whether you like twang or not, the music itself stands.
Also, massive shout-out to Margo for being as passionate as she is. There's something about a musician who breaks down a bit during sad songs making the music that much better that I liken to Red Skelton's jokes being funnier because he laughed while telling them.
Love Margo! She really kicks ass. I see she has a strap by Johnny Fritz too, that's also badass.
Music from the heart with s great message. Love it!
She sounds like a young dolly. I’ve never liked country but wow she is talented.
And with a bit of Janis as well. Just great!
Wowww Beautiful, Margo Price 🌹🌹❤
Loved in in every way possible 100%!!!!!
I just love Margo! 👏👏👏
One of the tightest bands in county music, but man that keyboard player is the slickest!
good to see Chigurh's changed his ways.
CALL IT
It sounds, She sounds like deep forests & deep sunny evenings beside sweet & melancolic twlight
Love this girl
A great honest country song writer. Hope that Jak Wayne Bollé can get to play a show with her soon. Then we will see an outlaw country rival that this world so desperately needs.
saw her on Anthony Bordains show, She is Gudd
Ms. Price is truly gifted.
American made is definitely somethin cash would have probably put on an american recording

Wow really good love yall talent
Great band
Oh Margo...i love you.
Sensational tunes!
Excellent Tiny Desk hope to see her in Seattle come Feburary 2018.
So good!!
She is a true talent, who sings of the problems plaguing America today. I can see how she identify's with Bob Dylan, who was the voice of a past generation. All the best to you Margo in the future.
So good! See you in Telluride!
Four years of Chances played on 1.25 is a game changer!
😍😍😍😍😍 AMAZING
Holy shit yeah! Awesome.
Very nice. Porch sitting and sipping sound. Nice. Smiling.
real good stuff
lucky to have a band like that
This was beyond dope.
What a perty voice.
Thanks a lot for the great concerts! Please invite Ed Motta (Brazilian soul, jazz singer) one of these days! :)
No wonder she looks so shell-shocked! We all were, that day.
Cool jam
Go Margo 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
HOW HAVE Y"ALL NOT HAD AOIFE O'DONOVAN
Welp.... I'm in love lol
Love her shirt! Does anybody knows what brand it is?:):)
Damn Gal you are oooooooh so Good
This is the real shit.....Thanks.
I love these people that are like "omg she has opinions, now I'm not going to buy her album" hahaha like she cares
I love these people that think they know someone else's mind..../smh
Thats the price you pay when you mix music and politics, specially in this vague way.
When celebrities get political they lose fans, it's far from new.
Washington Post article Feb 9th 2019 reports she's planning on getting out of Country Music because she can't get her music played on country stations. She said she was tired of country, it had been good to get her start, but she wants to get more political and can't do it in country. Meaning...she can't make it big in country so she's moving on...there's a country song in that...haha.
@@NotUrBiz Real country is no longer played on country radio. Meaning....she'll keep on doing what she is doing, and the dumb shitheads that listen to bro country were never going to matter anyway. And there's a country song in that, called "Murder on Music Row"....haha.
come play Hardly Strictly!
If anyone in here doesn't know, Dillon Napier on drums used to be in a band called Scatter The Ashes. The have one album out called "Devout: The Modern Hymn". The man is a master on the drums. Check it out but be warned, they were a hardcore punk band. Sad they broke up
The NPR office is in D.C. This was recorded the morning after the election, 11.28.16. An artist based in TN wakes up in the capitol after this election with a hot mic and she gets bashed for dedicating a completely appropo song to the newly elected president. Insert eye roll here.
Hillary Clinton is our lord and savior we where robbed. ive quit my job and have been protesting ever since
❤️❤️
We saw her during her sold out 3 night stand at the Ryman last year.
Jerry Lee has a younger sister- Linga Gail- who writes original alt-country. And the family lived in a shack outside of Ferriday.....
Anyone know the piano players name?
💚💚💚💚💚🇧🇷
Love this ,but what does the shirt say?
Icky Trump
Would love to know which musician 'About to Find Out' is about!
DEATH GRIPS: NPR Music Tiny Desk...please
baahahahaha that would be legendary!
Not exactly music for a tiny desk in an office space :p
GET GET GET GET

Men country singers sing music to obey to. Women country singers sing music to rebel to.

@@averycardosia2486 the truth always does.
KEVIN!!!
Nice performance! By the way, I must admit that I've been watching way too many Sturgill Simpson videos lately otherwise I would have never even noticed this. But isn't the bassist here the same guy who played bass in Sturgill's old band, Sunday Valley?
Janna D. Yep, Kevin Black.
Pineapple Wonder!
I'd love to see Neil Young do 'Heart of Gold' or 'Old Man', if you're listening Bob!!
Gosh its like stevie nicks and dolly parton had a baby
Nice - makes me think of Bonnie Raitt.
The band looks a bit hung over. I guess they hadn't been celebrating the election.
Great performance and the kinda nerve that is rarely found on the radio these days.
come on
I've got a sore back but I'd make a decent backing vocalist or lead according to previous music development ventures, I'll submit more vids later ❤😂🎉😢
I was about to purchase your album until I saw this Good luck to you Ms. Price.
I doubt it.
