Chris Stapleton: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

As a songwriter in Nashville, Chris Stapleton has written hits for Kenny Chesney, George Strait and Darius Rucker. As a singer, he once led the bluegrass band The SteelDrivers, and more recently stepped into the solo spotlight with Traveller, his debut album. It's the kind of country record that gets better the more you wear it in: When NPR Music named it one of our favorite albums of the first half of 2015, critic Ann Powers compared it to a "soft denim jacket ... pulled out time after time, lending comfort, suiting every occasion, with treasure stuffed in every pocket."
It's easy to understand why other singers took to his songs - Stapleton writes lyrics that sound classic but never dated - but his softly creaking voice gives them the home they deserve. And even though those songs stand plenty well on their own, it's nice to have a little support. When Stapleton stepped behind the Tiny Desk to play selections from Traveller, he was joined by his wife Morgane on harmony vocals. Between patient, detailed songs of devotion to love, Los Angeles and liquor, they paused for banter about the summer heat in D.C. and the large number of guitars Chris owns ("Not supposed to tell that part," he said to Morgane).
Watch him hide behind a large hat, a beard and a battered vintage guitar; watch her smile at him during "More Of You" with a combination of admiration and affection. Like the songs themselves, their performance is full of private moments worth sharing widely.
Traveller is available now. (iTunes) (Amazon)

"More Of You"

I thought I didn't like country. Turns out I've just been listening to the wrong type. New fan.
Was thinking exactly the same thing. I am definitely a fan of both of them now!
I've been preaching for so long that when people say they don't like country music after listening to bands like Florida Georgia Line that they're simply listening to the wrong kind! I was raised on classic country and a great country song can be a balm to the soul.
Country music is no different than rock or folk or any other genre; it has many faces and many voices that appeal to many different people. There is tremendous breadth to "country." Much of it is popular beyond the reach of country radio stations, and that has always been true.
Same. What's being pushed on us is Hick Hop. There is no real storytelling in it.
Same
Morgane Stapleton doesn’t get the accolades she deserves. She is an amazing singer on her own. The both of them together is magic.
The way she looks at him melts my soul
I think she gets exactly the accolades she deserves. Theyre plenty
She's also is a song writer 😊
She actually had a recording contract when they met
Absolutely 😁💯 love me some Jesus and ALL Chris Stapleton ❤😂 and family ❤🙏🏽😁😍
She has such control of her own voice and knows his tone so well their voices just meld together, it’s so beautiful
The story of how they became acquainted is beautiful!
So agree
@@doughboysteve2464 Yep, cool story.
Agree!!!
That’s his wife so it’s understandable how they’ve come to be so good together
He's going to be considered one of the greatest country artists ever. Great cross-over appeal and brought black people back to country music. I never thought I'd see it in my lifetime.
It’s true
I am not a country fan but love Chris Stapleton, saw him for the 2nd time in Toronto where he played with War and Treaty and let me tell you......actual chills when the 3 of them sang together❤️
Great song writer, singer and performer! I love Morgan and was disappointed when she wasn’t at the show I attended, I love them performing together she has the voice of an angel. If you havent seen the performance he did with Justin Timberlake search it up bc it just proves how talented he is.
He’s one of the greatest singers ever period.
The world is too loud, and Chris Stapleton seems to get that. He's cool letting the empty spaces be empty, and Morgane flutters through those spaces like a buttefly, touching down ever so lightly here and there. They obviously adore each other. It's really very sweet!
Dave Renfro deep
This is beautifully put, I couldn't agree more!
Love
I want to spam thumbs up for this comment. Beautiful phrasing. I hope Morgane reads this comment.
Dave Renfro wkwilao
There are few artists these days that can transcend genres. This doesn't feel like country to me, this feels like music to me.
Absolutly
This might be the best description of Chris Stapleton I've ever ever read. Perfectly said.
Screw genres and styles. There are two, and only two, kinds of music. Good music. and Bad music. This is safely in the former category. :)
There are few artist' being promoted lately. 'Lately' being the last 30 years.....
So country isn't music? Jesus
I am so struck by the amount and depth of love in Morgane's eyes for her husband. What a beautiful performance
Me as well.
That’s exactly what I said too! It’s so beautiful it almost feels wrong to watch. ❤️
Shepherd's Chapel Network !!!!!!! Chapter by Chapter / Verse by Verse !!!!!!! Amen
I am watching for a 2nd time, and probably will again a few more times - to see something so real, unfiltered, honest as Morgane's eyes.

The way she looks at him is literally every mans dream when the love of his life looks at him

This is the kind of music that makes me start browsing zillow for 5+ acres below the mason dixon line.
Ian Eppard 😆
Like Louisiana he said
Come on down... We'd be happy to have Ya, Friend. ;)
Central Wyoming for me.
Ian Eppard don’t we’re full🙅♂️
I am not a fan of country music. This is amazing. His voice. The lyrics. The soft guitar. The way he and his wife sound together. The way she looks at him and they gently joke with each other. I love this. All of this.
Spot on, so true
Agree! and Truth!
exactly Joyce .. sooo sweet.
Yep, you're a fan or REAL country music, not this fake, corporate crap on the radio.
You are right, this is beautiful and I appreciate the intimacy of the music, and their love.
Had to come back to this gem after watching him sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl. Always just an absolute pleasure to listen to his music. Something that should be cherished forever and ever
Me too!
I concur
seriously! Just get him to do it every year as far as I am concerned
Best singer out there
One of my favorite things in life is watching non-country fans react to Chris Stapleton songs on YT. It's always entertaining and fulfilling. He really does transcend genres.
Thank you for the constant love and support you have been showing me and my music….I really appreciate you. Your support and love keeps me going. Keep being a lovely fan. Where are you watching from?❤️😊😊………..
Soul always does
I'm just sorry I hadn't discovered him sooner! What an incredible talent! And his wife's voice just melds into his...like just the right amount of cream in your coffee to make it a perfect cup ☕️
@@ChrisStapleton02 You were amazing in my home town of San Diego, California thank you sir!!!
One of my favorite things is watching country fans react to non country fans react to chris stapleton. Like watching monkeys discover fire.
"When I leave this earth you'll be holding my hand, and it gives me comfort to know you'll be there. And I'll thank the lord for the love we shared... you're heaven to me." If that doesn't hit your soul you better check your pulse.
I was listening while doing laundry and I heard it and just started crying. It just hit me like that
He’s not only a great singer and story teller. He’s fantastic songwriter and lyricist.
Yes. I held his hand...and I thank the Lord too for the love that we shared. I miss you my prince!
Morgane turns her head down even like it's hard to sing that part.
@@brycegroff6787 that was when my tears came
I love Chris, but Morgane doesn’t get enough credit! Her voice is a perfect match for his.
PacificKnights I want her to make an album so badly I can’t stand it.
All due respect, I can't think of a background/harmony singer these days who gets more credit than Morgane does and, justifiably so. She is as good as it gets and fits Chris' music like a glove.
My understanding is that she also doesn't want a lot of credit, in the sense that she apparently has major stage fright. I imagine being part of a duo or a group suits her just fine. She does sound incredible!
She is a really good backup singer.
I love her voice!
The way Morgane stares into her husband's eyes transfers true love and admiration 🥹🤍
My wife has end stage cancer. This is a very positive song about a deep relationship. It’s our new theme song. Thank you Chris and Morgan.
All my love and joy to you .
Very very sick too. Palliative care along with Hospice last week suggested to me while in hospital.
Devastating to hear.
Still here and at home fighting this for.
I'm the happiest person I've met in months.

How are y’all doing now?
Funny how there's grooves in your heart you didn't know were there. This just slid into one of mine. Beautiful.

Sooo, apparently I like country after all...
+Perry Sanders great music is just great music. It can't be pigeonholed into just one genre.
Actually this genre of music is considered Red Dirt...a form of country yes, but more blues, southern rock, and hillbilly combined. The best artist on the planet are playing there now IMO...it ISN'T sanitized Nashville mainstream country and is becoming more popular by the year. Check out the Red Dirt channel on Spotify... great songs being played daily.
+Perry Sanders Congrats! Welcome
+Maximus Bevo right on thanks for the info broski
+Perry Sanders I always considered myself as someone who disliked country. Then I heard Chris Stapleton. I can't stop listening.
The way Morgane looks at her husband when he sings gives me goosebumps.

No, just beyond the country music you know
He's no Steve Earle but he certainly has some bad ass songs.
Aaron Rios so are those goofy hats
Listening to his music is a spiritual experience for me.
Man sometimes my intentions are to just listen to it in the background.. next thing you know I’m crying next to the speaker. Spiritual music touches you whether you asked it to or not.

I used to say I didn't like country, now I realized that is only pop country, the one I don't like...but classic real country like this one, makes you feel goosebumps, makes you smile and thank the artist for creating such beautiful pieces. I'm now a big fan of Chris, Greetings from Mexico!
The best!
¡Esta es la musica que escribiria Johan Sebastian si fuera Estadounidense!
I said the exact same thing, Roberto.
Listen to Midland, they're out there putting some real country music as well.
Yes, he is a throw back. The genre needs more Chris Stapleton and less Shania Twain.
The comments seem to indicate the Tiny Desk Concerts and Chris Stapleton attract an intelligent, high quality audience.

I went from Mac Miller's Tiny Desk concert and was not disappointed. Can't believe this video is 7 years old and I only heard of Tiny Desk a couple of days ago.
I just discovered Tiny Desk this past year also. A fun discovery.
Same from Mac, to Anderson pac, to hozier and now to this.
At 3:08 he says "When I leave this earth, I'll be holding your hand...." you can see Morgane instantly think about that and man does she look sad. These two are perfect.
Drew I caught that too.
Like Johnny and June...RIP
Cuts like a knife..
there was zero sadness in that look. just love
I also saw the look on her face. She sort of purses her lips, maybe with the thought "we don't want to think about this." It's incredible the way she looks at him. I'd damn near sell my soul for that.
Her voice is like the sweet glaze layer on a kripsy kreme doughnut

this is country? My favorite artists are Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins.. he is just plain good.
@@Kruc101 Yessir! If you like this kind of country with great lyrics, I’d highly recommend Zach Bryan and Tyler Childers. These guys, along with Stapleton are amazing songwriters in the country scene. Jason Isbell too, he’s more of a songwriter though
Just so true………. Best country artist Chris and Morgan…….. just beautiful. Can listen over and over again!!!!!!!!!
The thing I like about Chris & Morgan is they don’t have to put on a performance. They let their amazing voices do all the work. You can feel it’s genuine.
Thats it. I cant keep changing my favorite tiny desk performances!!!!
You didn’t really have a choice with this one
What are some of your favorites? This and mac miller are my top 2. Different genres but ive been a mac miller fan for YEARS and his tiny desk performance about a month before his death really hit hard.
Haha! Yes! Me too!

Tyler Childers and St Paul and pocket change
When people say they don’t like country... please listen to Chris Stapleton....
Not normally a country music person but, man... you can't deny how good and soulful Chris Stapleton is... what an amazing story teller.
When he was the lead vocalist in the steeldrivers circa 2009- some of the greatest vocal tracks and underrated raw emotions most fans never even heard
Blue side of the mountain
The ghost of Mississippi

Just to name a few!
I swear this guy must hid an amp under his beard. The sheer power of his voice doing so minimal is super impressive. HE IS DEF TOP 5 best singers of all time in my book.

With him as backup for her. Ha that would be cool.
I can't get enough of this. I swear she was ready to start crying at the line "when I leave this earth you'll be holding my hand"..what a beautiful love song. Oh to have the love of a good woman who looks at me like she does him. You can feel the love in her gaze.
Now I know why I stopped listening to country music. Because they stopped making music like this. Thanks Chris for bringing me back.
I swear... If I ever meet a woman that looks at me like that... He is absolutely phenomenal, but she is a million pound diamond.
I was so in love with this man's singing that I bought all 4 of his CDs immediately. They are all so easy to listen to because every song is memorable. He has created a style that is unique in my opinion. It sounds like country soul.

Most singers voices aren't naturally beautiful like his. A gift from our lord
Chris is technically country but he has more blues and soul than anyone in the industry by far. He's restored my faith in this genre that had been dying for over a decade. I hope he can set future country artists back on the right track.
The roots always come back in vogue eventually
Wrong ,Chris IS music.
You need to check Colter Wall, Tyler Childers, Marcus King.
Chris tops them all but also check out Tyler Childers, Whiskey Myers, Jamie Johnson, Uncle Lucius... When I listen to country these guys are what I think of.

It is easy to overwrite anything, including a sing. It is extremely difficult to prune it down to only what absolutely has to be there. This man does this very well. Bravo.
This song is written, almost to the letter, of the painful life my husband and his father went through with his mother, my mother in law. She struggled with bipolar disorder and attempted several times to make all of her suffering stop; she felt she was a burden to us. She could not have been more wrong. However, on June 26, 2006, she 'fired away'; one gunshot wound ended her suffering, not knowing that our suffering would endure. Only 7 1/2 years to the day later, on December 26, 2013, my father in law's suffering from her loss ended when he passed from cancer. My husband struggles DAILY with the loss of both of his parents. Mr. Stapleton, if you should ever read this, please know that you music brought my husband to tears. He has stated many times that your music gives him hope and that "real country music lies within Chris Stapleton." Please continue making music, knowing that you are impacting the lives of many. Some are closer to home than others. May God Bless You and Keep You.
Could you imagine a dinner at their house and afterwards you head to the living rm for a drink or 2 and Chris decides to pull an acoustic guitar out and commences with these amazing songs:)

She always looks at him so adoringly. It's sweet
I love when people bitch about "real country". It's either good or it isn't. Chris Stapleton is so good he can write "real" and "fake". This guy is unreal and deserves more publicity and credit.
Hmmm called it!!!!!!!
The way she looks at her husband with those harmonies!!!! 💥💔❤️ That connection! That’s something so solid we can’t even imagine 🙏🏽
I love watching these two sing together. When they're not singing from their souls, they're singing to each other from their hearts with all the love God intended a man and woman to have for each other. Peace!

An old guitar with new strings. Beautiful!
+LOOK MUM, NO HANDS (Zeki Min) Nothing quite like that sound
This dude could sing the phone book and I would listen to it!!! One of my favorites
Amen brother
The way she looks at him. 🥰

Believe the hype. He's as good as advertised
B.B. King is one of his inspirations. This man is a living legend!
The fact that someone sneezes around 2:40, and Morgane waits till after the song to say "God Bless you" - just so polite with manners, I love her. Even though this was recorded way before covid ---- even "after" covid, I hear someone sneeze, I still say "Bless you" --- just polite manners. Just be kind ♥️

Morgane is a sweet angel with a heart of gold.
I love country music and i am a black chick reason being i grew up with it. In my house Willie played beside Cash, Rambos etc. When people say things like Chris is bringing back proper country i smile because every music genre grows and changes i personally don't feel much passion for what i call pop country some tracks are ok but country cant stand still i am glad that we are getting back to real songwriters again that make you feel something when they sing. There is one thing that i hope country does not get rid of and that's real love songs not just the mush of love but also the heartbreak nothing does that better than country.
+Claudia Bailey Where are the black chicks in country music? I love Mickey Guyton's Better Than You Left Me. She writes & sings traditional country. I just hope country radio embraces her. I mean, they just don't embrace many black singers & it's ridiculous. I'm so sick of slick, generic pop country overall. Even Miranda gets "pop" at times. I guess Chris is gonna have to lead the charge & save country!!!
+markmiz88 There are some around they just don't play them on radio. I love RAY SCOTT, too. Lance Miller. They're both great. Chris released a single 2 yrs ago called "What Are You Listening To?"-great song-just went to #46 on the charts! Now he has like 5 songs on the charts! CMA's kicked his career into gear & the voters on the CMA panel finally got together & rewarded someone w/no top 40 hits as of yet! AMEN!
+Claudia Bailey I have always LOVED Willie Nelson and Ray Charles' version of Seven Spanish Angels. There was a time when music was just music before corporations got involved and started labelling everything. Music is the one thing that everyone can understand and share across all boundaries. Peace and Love.
You may like Lindi Ortega, Brett Detar, Shakey Graves, and Shovels and Rope. Americana/country/blues/rock kinda :D Great stuff that you'll probably not hear on the radio anytime too soon, sadly. Also check out Chris's old band The SteelDrivers....REAL country music for sure :D
Music has no color. I love it.
"He has lots of other guitars" ...that is the understanding of what love looks like.
I would so love to see him and his wife in person. I am 70. On my bucket list
