Sorry I don’t know if it’s short or long? Wish I could be more help! I only replaced mine due to a squeal, couldn’t change the pulley, thought the pulley bearing was bad.

Hi robert, in this case I thought the sierra's had a short water pump too but at the end of the instalation you can see that he mount the alternator just next to the water pump (on the passenger side of the engine connected to the pump) that means it's a long water pump. The short pumps usually are mounted on a bracket on the drivers side of the block.

What size socket did you use to remove the water pump bolts ?

I don’t remember what I did yesterday, or that long ago ;) I’m sorry. That truck was Canadian we get a mix of metric and imperial.

Spring on fan: How does a spring fan clutch work?
Image result for what is the spring on a clutch fan for
A fan clutch is a thermostatic engine cooling fan that can freewheel at low temperatures when cooling is not needed, allowing the engine to warm up faster, relieving unnecessary load on the engine. As temperatures increase, the clutch engages so that the fan is driven by engine power and moves air to cool the engine. BTW, why not open the petcock on the radiator to drain it before starting ?

I am aware that they do that but that little piece wasn’t even hooked up to anything. It just didn’t make sense to me. I guess I have more reading to do. The reason I just take the bottom hose off is that those little drain valves are slow, they usually are brittle, and they can leak afterwards. Especially working on old junk like this truck. This truck drove me nuts with some of the weird issues it had.
