I didn't think there were any Ka-Spel interviews, at least not on video. Thanks for making and posting this one. The man is a true genius and an absolutely riveting performer. I never miss a chance to see him or the LPD live.
What is not to love about these musical explorers. I have also met them and they are so graciously wonderful. After all these years they continue to stimulate and create. They are the best example musically of true artists that I can ever recommend to anyone. It is so very special to have your life enhanced by others mere expression of themselves and their fantasies. These guys are a feast for the mind!
Met this guy twice, each time I saw him play in Chicago. Last time he signed my Pink Box cd. Much love and respect to you Ka-Spel! I'll see you every time you are in the states.
Thanks for the kind comments, folks! I only wish I had made the interview longer, but I didn't want to take up too much of Edward's time before the show in Toronto (they were doing a soundcheck). It was taken as part of my film on Goth (Goth:insideOUT) so the questions were centered around that. I'm still working on that film, but it's going slow with funding delays - but it will be finished when I can. Thanks for watching, I'm glad you like this video! The Dots are truly something special!
Long Live LPD, there's never been another band like them.... 30+ years & going strong, yet they've STILL *never* received the recognition or accolades they truly deserve.... Truly one of music's most tragically unheard-of bands. Think of the no-brains, pop trash sell-outs who RAKE in the cash, while guys like the Dots have to worry about finances.... This world is upside down!
I met Edward in person after a Lee's Palace concert in Toronto and asked him if he received my fan mail. To which he replied, "Oh you mean the letterpost?" Then we shook hands and I don't remember the next 10 seconds. Guess that contact was good enough.
this is the first Edward Ka-Spel interview I have EVER seen!!!! kudos to you! I agree with modernplague, they are the most tragically unheard of bands...they deserve to rake in the cash instead of this emotionally void lobotomized music out there. I believe it takes a certain caliber type of person to love, understand and appreciate the dots. there is no one in the world like edward.
Cool---never seen an intervew with this person either---I liked the Tear Garden song "Desert Island Disc" which led me to this. And, yeah, he does kind of sound a little like Syd Barrett--I never made the connection, because I've never heard enough of his musci---I shall be checking out some Pink Dots stuff, then.
+rainmaker690 Thanks for the comment and for watching. Yes, he makes some very interesting music - highly recommend that you look into his catalog further!
@23locustgirl Thank you! It's from my film-in-progress/Web project GOTH:insideOUT. I hope to include more from Edward and the Dots in the film, if possible. But, the interview was brief, and centered around my Goth film. Now, I'm thinking I should look into making a documentary on the Dots, themselves! Please subscribe to my channel here and keep watching! - Best, Dave.
Why does he keep talking about goth, as if they identify as a goth band. As he just got done explaining, they started long before the goth thing ever happened. Nothing against goth people or goth whatever but the questions come off as very ignorant to me. It would be like asking Pete Townshend of The Who all about punk culture and the punk scene since The Who is a band punks like and identify as early inspirations for punk bands.
It's a clip from a forthcoming documentary film on the Goth subculture (GOTH:InsideOut), in case you missed that in the description, etc., which he was interviewed for (it's not the story of his band). His fans have a crossover with Goth music and culture, and he himself states in this clip that he's a fan of going to big Goth festivals. So, yes, the questions were relevant. Perhaps have more of an open mind and grateful attitude, instead of looking at the negative side, for something you got to enjoy for free - there are very few interviews with him at all.
even his talking is a great song
