In part ii of this tutorial I'll show you how I put the score together, prepared these sessions and then how I mixed the raw material into the final results SO IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS place them in the comments below. Please, we need one with a full orchestra. It is a must!
How about here: ruclips.net/video/HaWGWQJVVBI/видео.html
@@TheCrowHillCo Yeah saw that one and lost count of how many times! By full orchestra, I mean WWs and Brass :)
These videos are worth their weight in gold.
This so cool to sit in on. A privilege! Would love to be quiet in the corner taking it all in. Nice one, Christian.
My jaw dropped when I found this video & Channel! I was only hoping to find some of the sublime score of Inside No.9 only to discover this treasure of insight by the composer himself! I so wish that Mr Henson would someday be interviewed by Reece & Steve on the Inside No.9 Podcast, hopefully, the 1 for s06 the sooner the better.
I’m glad that Cue R was here. I loved that track when I heard it at the end of Misdirection and wanted to hear it on its own without the dialogue and everything
"It's absolutely spot on! Max could you....." hahaha I say this to clients all the time :)
Ooooh this is so interesting! I have no involvement in music, RUclips just recommended this to me as I am into inside no. 9.
I am a session violist/violinist and watching this video feels like home. These players are phenomenal and an absolute dream to work with. The music is beautiful and brilliant - it’s clear that the parts were well-notated and very clear to the players. Excellent dialogue - clear and efficient communication is key in creating a successful session. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
You're very lucky to have such players. Worth their weight in gold!
GGauche totally agree. The best in the world.
@@TheCrowHillCo Excellent players for Brilliant composer and music! Thanks a lot for this videos (its amazingly useful, especially for young composers i guess) and for your grate music!
What an absolute treat. Sounding excellent. Consummate players. Christian is fooling us when he says he has doubts about his abilities; just incredible. At times like these surely "imposter syndrome" leaves the room?
I've been thinking about this, most composers DO doubt their abilities, really successful ones especially. I wonder if this is what makes us dig that little deeper, the uncertainty haunts us to the point of truly finding that spark. I used to have a writing partner who is a raging narcissist, he was convinced that anything he sneezed out of his finger was genius and and a consequence everything he wrote wasn't bad, it was just puerile. Maybe a subject for a future vlog.
@@TheCrowHillCo Indeed it would be. I saw a round table once with all the top composers each revealing their levels of insecurity and self doubt. It took me years to be comfortable letting someone listen/judge a tune without taking it to heart. Also how difficult it is to come to terms with something you create that you do believe is excellent, only to be dashed down with an underwhelming response. Oh to be a creative type ;(
For someone who is studying Film composition I can't express how incredibly useful and insightful all of these amazing videos are Christian
I can only agree. Phenomenal! Even with the score
What a great score! And how awesome that we get to ‘sit in’ on the recording...
What a splendid little group! Impressive but also challenging for me as a player to aspire to that!
Misdirection happens to be one of my favourite episode in terms of the music! Brilliant trios on V1, very Glass/Pärt-like! Another favourite is the music for the Stakeout, those eerie strings are amazing!!!
Can u pls pls tell me the name of the soundtrack in misdirection. Or where can i find it
I seriously can't get enough of your filmmaking style, it's so original and pure. One of the most beautiful, and aesthetically pleasing channels on RUclips. Keep em' coming Christian.
What awesome content! The price of admission is my interest and an internet connection. What brilliant times we live in.
I imagine these players will get lots of calls off the back of this, they are a credit to themselves. Bravo CH for doing what should be obvious but is so rarely done: giving musicians PROMINENT credits.
Great drama music, well composed, brilliantly played and direction style is firm but very respectful. Protools operator and engineer crushing this with less than 20 seconds interruption over a 2:15 session.
Please send this to Parliament as an example of professional conduct in the workplace.
Amazes me how quickly they nail their parts. Each episode being so different the music always lands spot on Christian which is no mean feat.
I love watching these sessions!!
Brilliant insight into the process. Thank you. Incredible sounds.
These Fly on The Wall videos are great, thank you for posting them.
Love these, I found the contemporary and scary bits particularly interesting. Thanks Christian for sharing it with us.
Really cool of you to supply the score, Christian, thank you! Boss content that even my non-composer friends are enjoying!
Such an amazing privilege to watch you demystify the process and to bring us in as outsiders. Thank you very much!
Fascinating, loved every minute of this.
Great stuff, Love these!!!!! Thanks for the score.... it helps in following along and understanding!
This was thoroughly enjoyable and such a privilege to see you all at work. Thank you, Christian!
I absolutely adored the first Fly On The Wall recording session, this is a blessing! Thank you so much!
This was brilliant Christian, thanks so much for sharing.
Thanks for sharing the score, Great fun to follow your session.
I would really love more of this whenever it is possible! To have the score and to be able to follow the session is so enjoyable and educating. I also loved the orchestra session for the same reason!
This is by far the most educational video on media music that's out there. Cheers, Christian! The music is brilliant btw!
Brilliant! Thank you. ...and thank you for the score.
Brilliant music, amazing educational video. Your channel is a pure gold.
This was great. Thank you for sharing this with us.
What. A. Treat! Thanks so much for sharing this; several hairs-on-the-back-of-the-neck moments there. Astonishing score and musicians. 👌
Thank you! Didn’t realise you score for Inside No 9. I love the show!
This is so educational and inspiring. Thank you Christian for sharing this with us.
Love these. Thanks for making this available to us Christian
I’m so glad you shared the scoring for this particular episode as it was a series highlight for me. Interesting also how you keep the interpretation open for the players then guide them through. This must make for some great collaborative music “magic”. The pace in which you work is quite something.
I missed out on a place on a film scoring course. I can’t now remember the reason, but that was in the turn of the millennium. Watching this has taught me a lot. I know I could attempt another go.
SOOOO COOOL! Thank you for this. That piece at the end, Cue R was so stunning!! So beautifully written and well performed. Loved being a fly on the wall.
Definitely one of my favorite videos Christian. It's nice, especially as an inexperienced composer, to see real world application rather than just theoretical knowledge for hypothetical situations. Thanks for this one!
Loved every minute. I was spotting that myself, watching everyone, mostly Max, because I was drawn to the 1st Violin. Great stuff Christian. Sharing this really helps. I've trawled RUclips for fly on the wall videos, and most recording sessions are cut into short videos, which are great, but not live as it happens. Learnt more this way.
Thanks Christian! I don’t know where you find the time in life to do everything you do! 👍🏼
Cue R is absolutely phenomenal. wow! thank you for sharing this process!
some of these cues remind me of max richter's memory house. stunning!
Fantastic stuff. Incredibly useful to see the range of artic's available from real players. Re-bowing in the note to emphasise slides - gold.
This is just fascinating stuff. Thanks so much for sharing.
I’ve just landed my first feature film as a composer and your videos are an invaluable learning tool. Thank you so much!
Amazing privilege to see this Christian and so educational. Thanks so much for taking the time and effort to produce these videos. I've started to watch the series recently and hugely enjoying it. It's a unique beacon of creativity, variety and imagination on British TV and the music is always so skilfully composed and placed.
Thanks for doing this christian. I would love to see this more often, as most others would too!!
Thank you so Much Christian for share your work, your work keep me inspired and give me new energies, a big Hug, Cristian T.
I am immensely impressed how you work together, it is such a high-level professionalism. And with amazing results. The music tells the emotional story. And it feels spot-on.
Also, “here it comes”. Reminds me of “here they come” in the Tutankhamun session. :)
This is endlessly interesting. Thank you for filming, editing and sharing it. More more more please! The skill, speed and precision of everyone is awesome. Also - Addison Lee Door sample in 12 Days of Christine - Quoi!?
Wow! Thanks, that's quite generous of you, Christian.
I learnt so much from this!! THANK YOU!
I'd like to say that this whole thing is so very educational. The ability to see a session like this is not something the average musician does these days. to hang and not say anything in the back of the room. "Leaning is inevitable" To see the interaction, the little problems, the number of takes, the vibe, all before you do it your self is so important. It lets you see.. oh this is normal... this is how it happens. Taking away the feelings of " Oh am I doing it right?" On behalf of all that did not have this opportunity before. Thank you.
I really enjoyed watching that. Fantastic insight into how it's done. Great group of musicians made it look easy.
Best bit for me was Cue 'R'. Brilliant!
Keith Theodosiou Music I completely agree with you. Lovely textures and feel. Having watched the episode of the show this is from, it really is spot on and beautifully written.
What an insight! And great players too. Really inspiring stuff :)
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Wow! I’m excited to watch this, thank you for sharing with us Christian :)
Love this series already! Keep them comin!
Also, a sample library of Richard and his cello would be much appreciated ;) Sounds massive and so beautiful!
Thanks Chris! This already exists: www.spitfireaudio.com/shop/a-z/spitfire-solo-cello/
Excellent. Thanks for posting this!
So great to see just how much the character shifts with the subtle performance directions and the fact that the players are engaging with it like that!! Also maximum points for the effortless parenting during the session!! #bogiewatch 😜
I really due enjoy the fly on the wall vids. I watched all of the one from Air Studios
Awesome music, awesome musicians.
Rather splendid stuff Christian! Thanks for the PDF too 👍🏻...Cue K has a familiar 'Modular Monday' feel to it...
Thank you for this, Christian!
I don't have the chance to watch it all at the moment but this is a really cool thing to be able to witness
This is great content thank you Christian!
Such a wonderful share! Thanks, @christianhensonmusic!!
As a recording student, I'd love to see the pro tools setup for this, particularly the way the click track is set up as you mention. "The fly on the wall" video on the spitfire channel has always been one of my favourites so I was delighted to see this video released. Thanks!
very cool to sit in on...wow
Love the No9 videos
I always like the musics of the series but i saw these original records just now and this was amazing, you're amazing! I have mp3 file from screen record of the credits of the episode Misdirection, I like that theme so much Even at my first watching, title shocked me deeply, as the thriller theme before it🖤
Ah, you would upload this just as I’m leaving for a session myself! Can’t wait to get back to watch.
Brilliant Christian!
I started watching this video but then had to answer a bunch of emails regarding Corona.... I must say, answering such mails with this music in the background gives the whole situation this special extra... :D
That's so cool, the insight but also the music. Been painting in my studio while following this. Who needs MasterClass when you have got this ?
I absolutely love these fly on the wall videos. Can someone help me and tell me if Christian made a video on how to write music using choir samples? Orrrrrrr if you didn't, that would be an awesome topic if you have time. LOVE your videos Christian I always look forward to the next one!. Also your fan base is AWESOME and im thrilled to be apart of it!
You threw a ton of ink at those players. All brilliant. True pros. Excellent vid. Makes me want to hire more live players, budgets permitting.
This is incredibly valuable thank you!
Thank you for this video! That's amazing) I'm not proffesional musician, but it's very interesting to watch it. Cue R is so beautyfull. Especially, it fits perfectly to final scene of "Misdirection")
This is awesome.
Fascinating
Juhu, I've been awaiting another Fly On The Wall Film... Tanks, can't wait to watch, but that shall be reserved for the Weekend.
Ah, thank you. Very insightful!
I love the collaborative spirit that everyone tries to keep up. So fascinating to hear the ensemble's first interpretations of the pieces.
I appreciate the honesty of these kinds of videos.
Brilliant , Love it , Thank you
Cool to see another one of these!
Edit: Daaaamn those vln 1 parts sound hard af
Edit 2: Just knowing that even if one player nails it completely another might not and the whole take is hosed must be nerve racking! We're all so used to being able to perform one line at a time and keep only the perfect ones but this is a whole other thing entirely.
I'd love to have a standalone album release of some of the pieces from throughout inside number 9. The piece from The Stakeout was so atmospheric, I love it!
Thanks for this
Great stuff!
Wow! Outstanding sir - what talents. Thanks so much for sharing. (what's happened to Buchla Bi-annual anyway?..)
Thank you so much Christian for this rare insight on what goes on in the TV and film composer world.
Two important questions however.
1) Can you do a video on articulations for each of the main orchestral sections. Lets start with strings for example. I feel it would benefit many of us who don't have any knowledge or understanding of articulations. Perhaps a pdf sheet containing the basics explanations would be much appricaiated.
Also I know this question has nothing to do with the scoring session but on many of your previous videos you always emphasise the importance of a business plan. Would it be possible to do a video purely on an in depth video of a business plan breakdown from your perspective. Perhaps a template with key points with inspired by the amazing orchestration template you did for all of us. I just like to thank you for the amazing work you'vre done in producing great information that all composers can learn and apply. It's a very rare thing that you do which many companies out there could learn from. You are a great inspiration to me and I'm sure all of your subscribers - Thank you so much Christian.
PS What is an IP?
I had to laugh when Christian spoke about his need for reading glasses and trying to hold out till he’s 50!! I am about 2 months older than Christian and am fighting a similar losing battle. Having to take my glasses off to read things will always make me chuckle!!
This is amazing. Please share "The 12 Days of Christine" records. I really wonder to see the process.
so cool
Please share full of orchestral .. this is amazing and realy we need to know absolutly episode misdirection is which one ?
A nice surprise after just listening to the Inside Inside No 9 podcast in which they praise Christian's scores.
I really love this scoring session! Will there be more like this in the upcoming future?
Bloody hell!
Air-Edel hasn't changed at all.
Brilliant stuff! so useful. thanks so much for this one.
two sets of questions:
1. Any chance to get more info about the mic set up? looks like Royers on the violins, 87(?) on the viola, u47 on cello and fet47 on bass? what's the main room pair? sounding really great, that's for sure :)
2. when every second costs money, can you break down a bit what was pre prepared by the studio in advance and what wasn't? is transfer time of the files included or not? and h ow rigid is that 15 minutes break? is really every thing timed by the second? if you need one more take is that really overtime for an extra hour for everyone?
Incredible work, thanks for sharing your work.... I love movies and series scores. For me, a bad film/serie can be saved by a good music...example with the movie avatar the last air bender and its wonderful music : flow like the water.
By any chance, is the music (melody) from the episode 4 of the season 5 (played at the very beginning during levitation) available for purchase ?
