Episode was awesome. Loving all these self-sampled sounds. So effective. I have a question for the community. I want to find a library with more booms, just like the one Christian uses from Distorted Reality. I use Omnisphere 2 but there's only a couple of the sub-booms that I like. I use Damage for more aggressive, harsh hits but really want a broader palette of those low, subtle, sub hits. Any help?? What libraries am I missing?
Scoring a live broadcast of 'Inside No 9' and releasing a Choir Library........and I thought I had had a busy week! Hats off to all involved in the live show! Christian, it is refreshing to see that it isn't only me that blows most of, or even their entire fee (and then some) on more gear. In fact, I still have some gear knocking around that was only bought for a specific job! At least you ended up with some great new stuff. I know that if I was fortunate enough to be in the same position as you were, I would have done whatever it took to get the job done too....after all, jobs like this one are never about the fee...even if you do get repeats....it was truly unique. Very well played, too. Great video, as always. I had to wait until half nine on Friday evening to watch it though as this week was full on, but enough of me.....no one's reading this bit now anyway.... Thanks for the samples and thanks again for the LABS choir. Terry :-)
My sphincter was tight right through that 20 second countdown and thereafter! Watching you perform in this situation was just as scary as the bloody show itself! Very well done :)
I admire your bravery and sheer will to out do yourself every time. Live film can have so many variables and so much improve performance that can make it hard for the composer in the moment to catch on and shift. Amazing work Christian, what you have done is one of the scariest experiences a composer or a musician can go through in front of such a huge audience
Utterly brilliant and gripping. Bit late watching this but glad I did. I bet your heart felt like it was in your throat as they were counting down to being ‘on air’. I’m not surprised you had to dry your palms a couple of times! Thanks for putting this together sharing Christian. 👍
Again, another great video! One thing I wanted to suggest for future consideration when you are running two laptop rigs for redundancy is using a Radial SW8. You send a sine wave out of each laptop on a separate channel, and send your audio to the SW8. If a laptop crashes, the SW8 detects the loss of the the sine wave, and switches over instantly leaving you not having to worry about hitting the mutes on your very nice Neve mixer!
Congratulations Christian! I watched it live and seeing how you brilliantly scored it in real-time is uniquely inspiring! Thank you for sharing the story of your amazing achievement.
Christian I started watching this show after I saw your video. Just wanted to say the details u r putting in really makes it special. Just watched S1-EP5 the understudy and one of your cues had a quick little military drum sound punctuation at the end. Perfection! Bravo!
The buzzing sound felt totally right for what I was watching. I didn't consciously notice at the time, but I remember it just felt as if the air conditioning of the studios was garbling at them and the building itself had become possessed. Great to see what you prep was for this and to see you behind the scenes performing live to the most exciting bit of live TV I've seen in a long, long time. Cheers!
I like the backup solution! I recently did an opera production where I was in the pit orchestra with a laptop and a custom sampler setup sort of similar to yours. The composing wasn't "live", but I was still doing a lot of mixing and responding to the orchestra and singers via velocities. I had backups for my files and projects, but if the computer blew up, I would have been out of luck! Fortunately, that didn't happen (also we were performing for a few hundred per night, not a million :D )
Congrats Christian, that was awesome! Watching you play that live was pretty nerve racking in of itself! Must have felt amazing getting to the end of the show, knowing you’d pulled it off and thanks for sharing your process again, always educational 🙂
This is bloody fantastic! As someone who loves Inside No 9, Macs, Logic Pro X, and making a horrible noise with it, as well as the technical side of audio/video/TV production, this is absolute nirvana for me. You're a captivating presenter too. Seriously cool.
Was really hoping you'd vlog this episode Christian - was thinking about you when watching it & wondered how it was scored. Utter fantasticness - so interesting to see the process and sounded amazing. Huge congrats
Huge congrats CH! Once again, thank you for making these peeks into your professional life available to us. This is bound to be a unique video that will be watched for decades to come. I agree with the opinion that the countdown to TX is enough to cause heart failure! Kind of reminded me of that Monty Python "Silly Job Interview" scene. Anywho, thank you, thank you, thank you!
This was utterly fascinating to watch, THANK YOU for letting get an insight not just to your process but how you adapt your process to a new working environment. Having come from a world of DJs and dance music, this reminded me of DJs that break out-of-the-box and started integrating live synths and drum machines to "recompose" dance music on the fly in a live context. This was the media composer version and it was so cool to get to see it!
Fascinating to watch, well done. Reminds me of my Performing Arts College days although we didn't have software instruments back then. Used to use Akai hardware samplers to do a lot of our work. On a small sidenote not sure if there was a reason for not wearing a seatbelt in the car but if not then please do next time. Wouldn't want a fantastic composer going before his time.
Fascinating to watch how stuff like this is done - thank for sharing Christian! I will have to see if I can find and watch it here in the USA... Cheers!
Thank you Christian for sharing this event and especially the days that preceded this live. Captivating in any case! We certainly all wanted to be in your place while fearing to be there, given the tension of previous days :)
Incredible. I wasn't able to watch it live but it was still amazing on iPlayer. When I'm not in the studio I play live a lot (including sampled orchestral parts) and work as a theatre tech so seeing all these disciplines come together was fascinating, such an artistic and technical achievement. I do pity the stage manager calling something that complex though! Congratulations to all! Really interesting seeing your rig for it too, I still work in dedicated hardware for playing orchestral samples. One thing I can't recommend enough for this sort of work is an expression (swell) pedal. It gives you so much more control over the dynamics when both your hands are busy. There's a bit of a learning curve, especially if you do what I do and move the sustain pedal to the left foot and use the expression pedal with the right (as organists do) but it's really worth it. Good aftertouch is also useful for swelling through held notes.
What a fascinating insight into a world that is rarely seen by us mere mortals! Great job Mr Henson - a truly outstanding piece of work (both on the live episode of Inside No.9, and on this RUclips video). Can't wait for the next series!
Amazing work Christian, congratulations! I love all your work in general, but this video really stands out, thank you for making it! The Rev2 was a great choice as a controller, very expressive, also a beast of a synth.
When the audio cut out i thought pro tools had stolen the audio on my mac (watched it on the iplayer) I spent around 10 minutes trying to fix it before i realised!!
Fascinating, Christian. Thanks for taking us on this ride with you. Congratulations on your success! On a side note, could you consider one day, maybe doing a sampling basics video? Funny how we acquire skills that seem high-level, but leave others behind. I'm clueless as to how to make my own samples and would LOVE to start.
I was going to post a similar question. Completely fascinated by the approach Christian took and would love to try it out but am not sure how to start. Beautiful video, Christian, and well done!
Hahah at first, in your shadow shots i thought you were the old lady doing the count down. Fantastic video Christian, thank you so much, you nailed it!
Nice one Christian, spent an hour dissecting the show with a friend and we didn't even consider that the music would have been played live too. Great job :-)
I'm nervous for you just watching this. It reminded me of how I felt earlier today when the last post was played at my home towns cenotaph. Every year I feel for the guy who gets that job. But must feel great when you've done it.
Hi Christian and thanks for sharing this. This video brought me way back to 2012 when I did something similar, but with WAY smaller audience (150). I had no backups back then, and 10 year old laptop. Still everything worked out very well, even the director wasn't overly demanding. I remember the most tense moment, getting a gunshot sound synced up to the actors actions, but it worked out well. Not a career changer for me but still memorable experience. Looking forward to your next vid.
Amazing piece of television, I was completely fooled and felt really bad for everyone when you had 'technical issues' can't believe you played it live! I assumed the pieces were prerecorded and you triggered them
I love Inside No.9 so much. Your music is absolutely brilliant. A perfect fit and without it, would be a different show without you. Thanks for this video!
Excellent vlog this week Christian. Fascinating to watch your process and it got me thinking about how I would have attacked this project using my own rig. Bravo
That was a brilliant insight to scoring a show. Playing along live just like the old organ players at silent movie shows, only turned up to 11 with the tech. Makes we want to persevere with my Buck Rodgers re do. I tried to watch the episode of NO9 again and pay more attention to your cues, but got too afeared...
Very interesting to see how this goes live. Recently you showed how your project turned on the iMac Pro vs Mac Pro ... now there is the new iMac Mini that has to be very powerful if I see the specs ... now I am very curious of this can run a full Logic project? Maybe a nice test for new video ? :D
Thanks Christian. Congrats on your achievement. A fantastic insight. Amazing work - very creative. I just read how film music was originally used, not as a result of any artistic urge, but from a dire need of something which would drown the noise made by the projector! ;-)
"Career defining"... And great to watch. Lovely (plus sensitive) the way that you from about 27:40 you defocus the left hand portion of the screen Thank you!
fafmotorsport Saves you having to ask permission or get release forms. Also, Christian kept his vlogging activity fairly quiet. It can be very off-putting to have a camera pointed at you when you are concentrating very hard on your work. Lots of people suggested making a video document of record of the gallery activity during TX, but I wouldn’t allow it, for that reason.
So glad you made a video on this!! I wanted to know how you made the music for the fantastically, wonderfully, terrifying live episode. Thank you so much for this video
Thanks for doing this behind-the-scenes vlog, Christian. The technical and artistic tips are coming to play into my preparation for a live movie scoring that I’ve been doing annually for 12+ years, but which THIS YEAR I intend to amp up using Spitfire samples and soft synth instead of far-inferior built-in synth sounds. Much smaller stakes than your 3 million person audience, though!!
This is totally insane dude. No way I could do that haha Question though... I would LOVE those cello samples. Any plans to make it a labs? or to make it in some way available?

Christian Henson Music Perfection. Can’t wait! Thank you.

That look of satisfaction when you were done. It’s that look we all get when you know you finished climbing the mountain
Fantastic job Christian. Your talent and energy never ceases to amaze and inspire me. Loved the show as well. Hats off to all of you!
Absolutely brilliant! I was holding my breath at the end, thank you so much for sharing Christian.
Congratulations Christian! I watched it live and seeing how you brilliantly scored it in real-time is uniquely inspiring! Thank you for sharing the story of your amazing achievement.

WOW! what an inside look, I absolutly loved it. your channel is a gold mine for composers' inside-info :)
I've been catching up on Inside No. 9 lately and was so thrilled to see you were the composer, really enjoying it!
Fascinating...rare glimpse behind the scenes...I never realized how much effort and co-ordination was involved. Good luck to you.
Wow very impressive man! You’re my new hero! Cheers! Also thanks for sharing your samples, very generous of you.
Wonderful. Well done for the live scoring and thank you for inviting us in to see it being prepped and done.

What a massive planning for a real time recording! congrats, Christian.
How crazy fun! Thank you Christian for all you do for and with this community!
This is absolutely fantastic and the live special was amazing and genius. Thanks for generously including us in this process Christian!

I was going to post a similar question. Completely fascinated by the approach Christian took and would love to try it out but am not sure how to start. Beautiful video, Christian, and well done!

I love Inside No.9 so much. Your music is absolutely brilliant. A perfect fit and without it, would be a different show without you. Thanks for this video!
Thanks for making these sounds available! What a cool experience. So smart to remember to have fun among all the stress!
Absolutely fantastic! Thanks for taking us on the ride Christian.
Excellent vlog this week Christian. Fascinating to watch your process and it got me thinking about how I would have attacked this project using my own rig. Bravo
Wonderful vlog but I would absolutely love to watch your entire score footage through the live broadcast.
Stunning tech too x
Wow, how amazing and exciting!! Thanks for letting us in on the magic. I was just in awe.
Christian, you are so inspiring! Thank You!

Is it possible to get a hand on that buzzer sound ? :p
A real gem of vlog. I felt the tension in the END👍
Absolutely phenomenal work! You are an absolute legend for sharing the process, thanks very much!
"Career defining"...
And great to watch. Lovely (plus sensitive) the way that you from about 27:40 you defocus the left hand portion of the screen

Charles Gaskell I’m curious: why is it some who work on this production might not want to be identified in this instance?

I kept watching this expecting something awful to happen. That episode man it really got under my skin

Thank you so much for creating an awesome episode! Priceless!
Bloody terrifying...And I don't mean the episode! Amazing work Christian - thanks for sharing.
That was fantastic Christian. Thanks for the audio insight into one of my favorite tv shows
I felt the stress watching the video. Great job well done.
Incredible! Really felt the anxiety during that countdown to ‘on air’! Thanks so much for sharing.
Legend. Totally fascinating to see inside the TV studio and understand a bit more of the process. Really well done!
That looked really fun. Well done, what a pro.
The angle with live theatre is pretty fun.. It would be cool to do, but challenging.
Great Scott! Bag of nerves just watching. Brilliant stuff.
Shit the bed, I’ve watched the whole series and had no idea you worked on it, big respect, great fkin show, perfect music
Fascinating! Thanks for the unique incite, Christian. Well bloody done. :)
Absolutely fascinating. Watched it til the end. Speechless!
Absolutely astounding, well done sir! Really enjoyed the show as it went out too :)
Nevermind the quality this is pure gold 🥇
Absolutely fascinating! Had no idea it would be scored live. The whole episode terrified me
Amazing video Christian - thanks for the download, I learn so much from your videos.
Thank You Christian for this Master Class. Fantastic process and execution 🎹😎👍
Congrats Christian. Great vid!. Again, Congrats!
Just brilliant! Thank you very much for sharing the process and the experience !
Awesome!
I see that you purchased the REV2 for this but I never saw it appear in a vlog since. Not a fan?
I saw a re-run of the episode. It still got me.

Bravo Christian! Great video!

Thank you for sharing this Christian! Very informative.
